TPM: 2011 Blu-Ray

AOTC: 2011 Blu-Ray

ROTS: I'm pretty sure georgie boy hasn't made any changes to this one so I guess the Theatrical Cut

ANH: 4K77

ESB: Color corrected 2011 Special Edition

RotJ: THX Laserdisc

>ROTJ changes

Mostly in soundtrack. The end song was totally changed from the more Ewok driven tribal song to wind instruments. In Jabba's palace the musical performance was changed also.

2011 blu-ray for prequels and Empire

Probably the original for ANH

ROTJ is tricky because I like the original jabbas palace musical performance but I prefer the 2011 blu-ray ending montage and music

Honestly though I only ever really watch the 2011 set. I recently ripped the full blu-ray discs in mkv containers so I also have them on my desktop now, about 37gb each.

I think the scene of Han and Jabba talking in ANH could work if they replace Jabba actually being there (which is dumb). Instead have it so its a holographic projection of Jabba on a droid or a mechno-chair. It would show that he considers himself to important to go down to some spaceport to do his own dirty work and it would also eliminate the need for that cringy looking scene of Han walking over Jabba's tail.

making it a hologram would be better for the reasons you mentioned. however, that scene still has problems:

• it tells us nothing we didn't already learn from Greedo

• it reveals Jabba early, instead of letting him be a mystery until RotJ, when he comes into play

• it interferes with the otherwise excellent pacing of ANH.

True enough, but George was always determined to have that shitty scene return, so even if by some miracle things go back to a pre-Disney standard, that's the only way I could stand that scene. Two ways to work around the reveal would be to make the hologram look buggy so it doesn't show a clear image of Jabba and the other would be to have Jabba's old translator droid be the one in the projection while you hear Jabba's voice in the background as the droid talks, but like you said, there's no real way of getting around the other two issues.

indeed. it's another example of George Lucas having the right ideas but, at times, the wrong execution.

True enough. If not for his editors and all the stress and restrictions forced on him, SW might not have been the phenomenon that it was. Sometimes a little restraint and a lack of yes men can go a long way. And yes I know I'm bashing George and I disliked a lot of his decisions, like wanting to retcon vibroblades because jedis are totes invincible (and nobody is allowed to use technological expertise to fight on even ground with them despite Jango briefly doing just that with Obi-Wan) but I'd honestly rather deal with him than the bastards at Disney, as George was autistic but well-meaning while Disney is just fucking corrupt and self-serving.

pretty much this.

it actually makes sense for Han to contact Jabba to try and buy more time, since he now has lots of credits lined up. it might even work in a novel, but not in a film. it's the sort of thing that should be cut during editing (an underrated component of filmmaking).

in any case, Han's contact with Jabba should be remote. it makes zero sense for a shitlord space-slug tyrant to slither around downtown Mos Eisley -- not only is it beneath his station, it's also asking to get assassinated.

gonna cut in here for a second. let's try and remember things instead of random shitposting.

first off, greedo was sent to collect payment in whatever form han could scrounge up. han refuses, then kills greedo after greedo admits to wanting to kill han and move up the ladder. greedo doesn't return to jabba, but at the same time han is also jabba's best smuggler (despite being full of shit about the kessel run), so jabba wants to make sure his payment is collected. thus, he takes a personal trip to mos eisley (assuming he isn't already there, which he more than likely was due to how fast he was able to intercept han at the docking bay), a shithole that's mainly shit because of him and his fellow hutts. even though it's a city he basically controls, he still has an armed escort, including one boba fett, because a gangster walking around without protection is stupid. han bullshits to get more time to collect his dues. han even says in dialogue the next time jabba wants something to appear in person and not send a collector. jabba cucks to han's demands but warns han of future shenanigans. end scene.

the pacing isn't ruined, it picks right back up after the scene is over, this is a pause from all that's going on so far, the mystery of jabba isn't ruined, though i think they should have kept the original scene intact, seeing jabba transform into a worm would have been more interesting and very dune-like, would have also given more inquiry into the hutt species and wonder if it was some sort of metaphor for power-hungry men and yadda yadda.

with all due respect,

>jabba cucks to han's demands

I don't see this happening. and if Jabba came to Mos Eisley, it would be on a palanquin surrounded by guards.

>the pacing isn't ruined

ruined may be too strong of a word, especially now that Rian Johnson has redefined it. however, it does throw the pacing off a bit. it's like a record skipping – you can overlook it, but it interrupts the flow and detracts from the experience somewhat.

and as I said, Greedo's lines explained the situation perfectly well, which makes the scene redundant.

also,

>>22480

>the mystery of jabba isn't ruined

it kind of is. there's no need to blurt him out so early when his arc doesn't properly begin until RotJ. it's much better to have him as this shadowy crime lord, where you know he's a power broker influencing events, but you don't know what he's like until later in the story. it works much better to place the first reveal in RotJ.

>I don't see this happening. and if Jabba came to Mos Eisley, it would be on a palanquin surrounded by guards.

two things: jabba does give into han's demands (the percentage negotiation, sorry if i worded it funny and confused you) and going by phantom menace, jabba seems to be able to wander fairly easily around tatooine. the outer rim is run by crime syndicates, and tatooine falls in the realm of worlds specifically controlled by hutts. it's like how al capone could wander the streets of chicago once he became the top dog.

you're not wrong about the greedo dialogue, but again, since han shot the messenger, he would have to reprise what he said the first time.

>>22497

>arc

jabba doesn't have an arc, he's a serial villain who gets offed in the same movie he first appeared in. like snoke, he exists to move the plot forward but unlike snoke has a purpose and place within the story. if anything, jabba's inclusion in a new hope gives him an arc, he goes from more of a fair-minded boss to a greedy asshole who's hellbent on revenge. otherwise, he's just this background figure that's haunting han and is all of a sudden thrown upon us in jedi.

Jabba can negotiate and compromise, but not to the extent of coming at Han's beck and call.

of course Jabba can wander around Tatooine, and he makes an appearance in TPM as you said, but presumably with guards around.

>you're not wrong about the greedo dialogue, but again, since han shot the messenger, he would have to reprise what he said the first time.

that's true, and that would work in a novel. but for the film format, restating what the viewer already knows is another reason to cut the scene.

>like snoke, he exists to move the plot forward but unlike snoke has a purpose and place within the story.

I agree with this. to clarify, Jabba doesn't have a character arc, he's always the same thuglord. I was referring to the story arc which centers around him, which is basically Act I of RotJ. I should've specified.

as an aside, Dune is important source material for Star Wars, and it's likely that Hutt physiology was inspired by the god-emperor Leto II (although the characters have almost nothing else in common).

TPM: Original DVD release for puppet Yoda

AOTC: Any. No real difference.

ROTS: ""

ANH: Despecialized - looks fantastic. Only downside is lack of Biggs.

ESB: 2004 Special Edition - Bespin looks far better. The few tweaks are done well and in good taste.

ROTJ: 2004 Special Edition - I like the Jabbas palace dance number and I like everything about the retouched ending. No 2011 because I don't want uncanny valley CGI ewok blinking.
