Of all pieces of Star Wars lore, one of the worst and most poorly conceived, for me, is the Jedi Agricultural Corps. Please correct me if any of the following is wrong.

So Jedi of the Old Republic around the time of Ep.1 are “recruited” when they are infants, rarely past the age of 3 years. They are never allowed to contact their family and are raised in a monk/cult like environment trained to control their emotions and focus on peace. They are also trained use the Force to have heightened senses and sword fighting. This training is down in groups and classes till the age of 12 in most cases.

Around the age of 13 a youngling must prove themselves in hopes of conniving a full trained Jedi to take them as an appearance to complete their training. If by age 14 or so they cannot convince an older Jedi to finish their training, they are forced into the Agricultural Corps and sent to some planet to be a farmer for the Republic.

Now I want you to really think about this. 13-15 years old, you have spent all of your life that you can remember training to be a Jedi, every day preparing for your trials and now, after a decade, you are told that no one was willing to waste their time with you and your being sent to some shitty backwater planet to be a rice farmer. These kids are going through the gantlet of puberty, have spent most of their lives living like monks in a temple, have super heightened senses, are deadly swordsmen, and have now been told they are worthless to the Order; a washout, a failure and have to be a farmer on some planet. A planet populated by failed Jedi.

Can you see ANY problems with this plan?

As you said, Jedi were indoctrinated, the membership was voluntary, so the ones who choose to stay were usually content.

> are deadly swordsmen, and have now been told they are worthless to the Order; a washout, a failure and have to be a farmer on some planet.

Not really, they are indoctrinated and the order stress that they are useful and helpful as ever as relief workers, researchers, not only as farmers. Also, not really deadly swordsman. They don't learn anything complex before being padawans, including fencing.

Still, an interesting thing that could be explored on the Jedi lore.

I just see such great potential for them to become disillusioned a become a threat to the Republic.

I read the novel Jedi Apprentice The Rising Force as a kid (pretty good read, if published by Scholastic) and in it Obi-Wan defeats another student in a duel while blindfolded and yet he is still at risk of being sent to a farm.

Definitely. One of many great ideas expanded upon in the lore which sadly never got more thought and effort put into it.

It's somewhat nonsensical, especially given the rarity of force-sensitives and the fact that agricultural work could presumably be fully automated. Sending any trained youngling to perform such a menial task would be a waste of a valuable resource. They could instead be used for secondary roles within the Jedi Order itself, such as helping to maintain the library, stocking the armory, working the kitchens, or providing technical support.

everyone in the temple has to be force sensitive/ going and living on a comphy farming world is worse than living that fucking got sam seen but without the promise of being able to advance to not be a shit cleaner.

honestly the bigger hole is that they are not sent back home, then if they want/its the only option to some backwater farm colony as the backup.

i don't see a problem. if they're unable to be taken on as an apprentice, it pretty much means they suck at using the force and are unable to control it, which means that the worst they would or could do is get angry and unleash any potential within them in a fit of rage. even then, dispatch a few masters to clean the mess up and done. besides that, farming is an important job, so it's not like they're getting dumped in a prison or labor camp or anything. they're still contributing to society and being paid for their work.

god forbid someone tries to start up a socialist movement, that would get shot down quicker than you can say syndicate.

What's the concern? Some loathesome Jedi farmer planet boycotting trading in the Galactic Market due to their insecurities as failures? It isn't as if these agricultural centers would have feasible resources to become a military threat, nor would they have vessels capable of projecting agro-Jedi power. It would literally be a bunch of Jedi misfits waving their lightpitchforks at the sky and cursing their betters.

The issue is that nothing stays the same forever - just because they sucked as Jedi then doesn't mean they can't suddenly massively improve as Sith later. They would also be familiar with how Jedi fight/think to a limited extent so they adopt tactics/weapons to counter Jedi.

Frankly this is an entire planet full of Sith recruits (or potential ex Jedi mercs for hire) and the agricultural means to support a revolution. All you need is the right allies with manufacturing capabilities (but lacking food) and you have a serious threat on your hands.

you clearly don't understand zen or buddhism, or not being a piece of shit, there is nothing shameful about being a farmer, it's one of the most honorable things someone could do. a jedi would realize that

But isn't the Corps made up primarily of people that couldn't make the cut as Jedi? As a result, there's far less pressure for them to accept Jedi teachings.

I think it means people who weren't geared towards being great warriors or powerful force users, as in they just weren't disciplined enough, but they were still good people. If they were truly awful, they would have just been kicked out of the Jedi Order, right?

Considering Jedi who deviate in philosophy are punished severely and considering that they kidnap force sensitive children, is it hard to believe they wouldn't let you leave the order even if you're terrible and useless?

All the posts that are

>I don't see any problem

Seriously? Sure, there's a case where a Force sensitive is just not very good, but what about very angry and disruptive kids prone to Dark Side use? I see two possibilities, neither of them good

1) very powerful dark side leaning jedi always get masters, meaning that only power is respected and the active pool of jedi may have some fucked up people in it.

2)there is a planet full of powerful yet uncontrollable dark side users told that they have to grow rice as chaste virgins forever.

This seems like it wasn't really thought out well and was introduced probably to give some more tension to Obi Wan's story (since Obi Wan struggled to find a master).

That's not really an issue. The guys who ended up there are failed apprentices who where not taken as padawans. They were not even that strong with the Force in first place or schooled enough to be a rogue threat. The people who turn rogue dark jedi were usually padawans with deeper training or fallen knights.

Yet another case of post-Russan arrogance. A side effect of the Council becoming complacent and weak after 1000 years of resting on their laurels and dominating the galaxy. Considering how they treat most in the Order, it's no surprise that they would have their own planets for failures.

Imagine, for a moment, that you are a Jedi youngling newly initiated into the Order. You are separated from your parents before you can even speak or walk, and taken to be raised by a government sanctioned warrior cult. As you grow and learn, you hear from the keepers of the Archives stories of how the ancient Jedi of old defeated the forces of the dark side through lightsaber duels and glorious battles. You are enamored by being considered a hero throughout the galaxy, and you train your mind and body, suppressing your desires of anger, joy, and lust, while training vigorously against droids and other students to make the cut. And when you finally come of age and step up, and show your prowess to a potential to your masters, you are rejected.

Because you were human.

You felt anger, hatred at the obstacle you were determined to surpass. And when you cut your foe down and basked in your triumph, they saw that you were too good. They feared the growth of the dark side in you, and rather than give you a chance to prove yourself, to show them that all they training they gave you wasn't a waste, they cast you out in exile. Doomed to be a farmer for the rest of your life in service to people to cast you aside. Why did they even accept you at all if they were going to just force you into a life of eternal toil? And as you get into the shuttle and depart from everything you knew and wanted to be the most, the resentment starts to build. Even with Jedi teachings, you can't escape your passions.

When you arrive at your destination, your silent rage mingles with others who were cast down. Those strong enough to be taken from their homes, but too weak to be "proper" Jedi themselves, or others like you who had potential but showed it in a way the Masters disapproved of. As you work to make crops grow, the storm of dark emotion inside you turns into an inferno. You hate the Jedi, for treating you like a piece of garbage to be thrown out, and for condemning you to a life of indentured servitude.

Soon years pass, and the Jedi forget that you ever existed. But then one day, a fleet arrives in orbit, stormtroopers land to secure the planet. You are captured and forced to meet the Emperor, who gives you a choice. You can serve him as one of his Dark Jedi, and unlock the potential, or die like the rest of the arrogant Jedi who cast you out for being too exceptional for them. The choice to you is obvious, if the servants of the Light cannot appreciate how much the force flows within you, perhaps the disciples of the Dark can nurture the negative feelings into something great.

How could anybody choose different?

I thought Jedi could voluntarily leave the order? Presumably the ones working agriculture are the ones who actually want to.

I suppose it's still deeply unfair, seeing as a failed youngling knows of no life outside of the order and would likely have to go along with this agriculture idea out of economic necessity.

It's just another example of the hypocrisy and sociopathy of the order itself.

>being a farmer is honorable

Whilst this may be true, there is a big difference between owning your own farm and being a literal serf. The agro corps sounds like the latter. Historically, religious philosophies like Zen have been used to ensure that the underprivileged feel morally obligated to be content with their lot in life (all whilst those at the top continue to exploit them). Religion is, more often than not, in economic terms, a stick to beat the under-classes over the head with. I see the same thing with the Jedi: "you MUST feel happy working on this farming planet; it is an HONOURABLE position; who are YOU to feel cheated out of the life of a Jedi knight?" It's yet more spirituality being used to facilitate yet another power structure.

all branches of the Jedi Service Corps are completely voluntary, right? what's the big deal? They can quit the Jedi path any time they want. A lot of them just don't see any reason to, because the galaxy is a shitty place and they don't have any social contacts or families. At least in the Service Corps, they have probably have a some friends there and they'll feel right at home. They have security. Maybe they want to stay in there and until they mature up a bit and get bored and find some other purpose or new education & career.
