On the night of October 3, 2002, Araujo attended a party at a house rented by José and Paul Merél,[18][19] attended by them, their younger brother Emmanuel, Michael Magidson, Jaron Nabors, Jason Cazares, and Nicole Brown. On May 27, 2003 Jatin Patel (a man who had recently been deported from the United States after serving a 60-month jail sentence for theft) met Tom at a night club on the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver where Patel stated that he would pay Tom $400 for sex. The two then relocated to Room 214 at the Travelodge Hotel in North Vancouver.[2] While performing oral sex on her, Patel became aware of scarring on Tom's body that he recognized to be from gender confirmation surgery and became enraged, strangling Tom to death.[3]
Patel proceeded to hide Tom's body inside of a closet while he went to find another woman to have sexual relations with. When they arrived back to the hotel, Patel told the second woman that he was considering disposing of Tom's body by throwing it in the ocean, burning it, or chopping it up.[5] Tom's body remained in the closet for 3 days until Patel wrapped her body in a mattress cover and left it in a shopping cart behind a dry cleaning establishment nearby. Tom's body was found 4 days after her murder, on May 31, 2003.

Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old black trans woman, was beaten to death in Harlem, New York on 17 August after a group of at least seven men accosted her and two of her transgender friends.[47] One of the men, James Dixon, had been flirting with her. After he realized she was transgender, he struck her. After falling down, Dixon proceeded to beat her. She died of head injuries in hospital. Her death prompted a number of protests. On 21 April 2016, Dixon was sentenced 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Perceived as effeminate, Jones was bullied in school and, at the age of 14, was forced out of his family home by his father. He moved into a derelict house in Montego Bay with transgender friends. On the evening of 21 July 2013, they went to the Irwin area of the city and attended a dance party. When some men at the party discovered that the cross-dressing Jones was not a woman, they confronted and attacked him. Jones was beaten, stabbed, shot, and run over with a car; he died in the early hours of the morning. Police investigated the murder but did not arrest or charge anyone for the crime, which remains unsolved.

Zapata was 18 when she met Allen Andrade (age 31 at the time) through the mobile phone social network MocoSpace.[2] According to Andrade, the two met on July 15, 2008, and spent nearly three days together, during which they had a sexual encounter. Prosecutors state that Andrade later discovered that Zapata was transgender and subsequently began beating her—first with his fists and then with a fire extinguisher—until she was dead. In the arrest affidavit, Andrade said he thought he had "killed it" before leaving in Zapata's car with the murder weapon and other incriminating evidence.[3] Andrade was arrested near his residence driving Zapata's car.[4][5]
The possibility of prosecuting the case as a hate crime was pressed by Zapata's family.[6][7][8] The actual trial began on April 16, 2009. During the trial, the jury heard jailhouse conversations in which Andrade told a girlfriend that "gay things must die."[1]
On April 22, 2009, Andrade was found guilty of first degree murder, hate crimes, aggravated motor vehicle theft, and identity theft.[9][10] He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.[9] Because Andrade had six prior felony convictions, the judge dubbed him a "habitual criminal" at his May 8, 2009 sentencing trial for the hate crime and theft convictions.[10] This added additional 60 years to his sentence.[10] As of October 2015, Andrade is serving his time at Sterling Correctional Facility.

Keeta Bakhsh died following a police beating on 23 October in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, that occurred while police raided her house. Police originally claimed her injuries were due to jumping from a moving police van but have since suspended the raid leader.[52]
Sabi Beriani was killed at her home in Georgia, on 10 November by Levan Kochlashvili. He had beaten another trans woman, Bianka Shigurova, that day.[55]

Aniya Parker, a black trans woman, was murdered on 3 October in Los Angeles during what police considered a robbery gone wrong, though the attackers did not take her purse and advocates believe she was targeted due to being transgender.[52]
Asia[edit]
Jennifer Laude was murdered in Olongapo, Philippines, on 11 October. Joseph Scott Pemberton was convicted of the murder.[56] Pemberton reportedly killed her after discovering she was a pre-operative transsexual.[57]
Mary Jo Añonuevo was strangled and stabbed 33 times in the bar she owned in Lucena City, Philippines, on 22 October.[58]

ande Kader (1993 – August 2016) was a politically active Turkish transgender woman. Kader was familiar to millions of Turks as a figurehead for the LGBT community after being photographed at the forefront of the resistance against police forces suppressing the 2015 Gay Pride event in Istanbul.[1] In August 2016, she was reported missing by her flatmate Davut Dengiler when she failed to return home the following week.[2] Her body was found raped, mutilated, and burnt[3] by the roadside in the Zekeriyaköy up-market on 12 August 2016.[4] Despite being badly mutilated, Kader's body was identified by prosthetics at the city morgue by Dengiler.[2][3]
Kader was employed in the sex industry as a sex worker, and was last seen getting into a client's car.[5][6] She was 23 years old at the time of her death.[7] The official cause of death has not yet been released. Reports indicate that after death her corpse was set on fire, possibly to avoid identification of the perpetrator(s).[
