'Raleigh City Council member Saige Martin has resigned after being accused of sexual assault and misconduct by four N.C. State students, as detailed in a News & Observer investigation published Friday.
Martin, 29, denied the most serious accusations to the N&O. He did not respond to the INDY's request for comment.
Martin was one of the city's first two openly gay council members elected last fall after defeating incumbent Kay Crowder. He spearheaded the Council's backroom plot to cancel citizen advisory councils and has been a vocal advocate of defunding the police department.
The allegations accuse Martin of "predatory" behavior between 2018 and 2019 when he was studying for a master's degree at N.C. State University and running his campaign for city council. Four men, all current or former N.C. State students, shared details of nonconsensual sex acts and inappropriate text messages sent by Martin. Three of the men were not named in the story for fear of retaliation. Biography
Saige Martin was born to a 15-year-old Puerto Rican father and a 15-year-old mother in foster care. Upon finding out she was pregnant, Saige’s mother was forced out of her home and Saige grew up homeless.
Growing up homeless showed Saige what it meant to fight for those that you love. It showed him what it meant to put your people first and how to stand up to injustice and inequality.
Saige was the first person from his biological family and adopted family to go to college. He received a B.A. in cultural anthropology from Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) in Honolulu, HI. At HPU Saige was elected Student Body President as a sophomore where he worked with the city, county and Governor’s office on multiple issues affecting the student body.
After HPU, Saige began a job with the United Nations in Istanbul, Turkey where he worked with refugees from all over the middle east. This work took him to the easternmost provinces of Turkey where he worked hand-in-hand with Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war.
A year later Saige took an opportunity at headquarters to work for the UN Millennium Campaign in New York City. He met his soon-to-be husband who grew up in Raleigh. And after a year of intense travel for work, he made Raleigh his home.
In 2012 Saige worked for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in southern Philadelphia, and in 2015 was hired as one of the first 100 people for the Hillary for America campaign as a consultant.

"Raleigh, N.C. — On Tuesday at 4 p.m., the Raleigh City Council will discuss the process for replacing a council member.
Saige Martin, who represents southwest Raleigh, resigned from his position on Friday after four North Carolina State University students accused him of sexual assault while he was a teaching assistant at the school.
The city council said it is getting guidance from an attorney about how the process of replacing a council seat will work. Right now, they are planning on accepting applications for a short period in July.
After the application period, a virtual forum will be held, where District D residents can email in their questions.
According to Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin, who accepted Martin's resignation last week, the council hopes to make a decision by July 14."
