YMCA = Young Men's Christian Association, it was all males originally because they were more medium-term places for single Christian men to stay. There were also YWCAs.
After my grandpa finished college and before he got married and had a family he was an engineer for GE and they had him travel a lot, he basically lived in YMCAs for like a decade.

>get room for month
>figure out which church to go to from front desk
>swim in pool, get laundry and meals done my YMCA staff

YMCAs were like for bachelors in an era where men were expected never to learn how to do a lot of chores.

I think they used to be nicer and longer-term than most hostels but yeah sort of. Then they turned more into being gyms and community centers and stuff, I went to nursery school and pre-k at a Y.
