Back in 2015, there was a forest fire near the Chernobyl reactor. During the fire, no noticable increase in radiation was detected. Fires are not new to the closed off area around the now defunct reactor, and radiation monitoring has been conducted in the past with no unusual spikes.

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — A forest fire is burning in the evacuated area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and is causing elevated radiation levels, authorities said Sunday.

The blaze has spread to about 100 hectares (250 acres), said Yehor Firsov, head of Ukraine’s state ecological inspection service.

The emergency services ministry said 130 firefighters and two planes were laboring to put out the fire. It said radiation levels had increased at the fire’s center.

The blaze is within the 2,600-square-kilometer (1,000-square-mile) Chernobyl Exclusion Zone established after the 1986 disaster at the plant that sent a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe. The zone is largely unpopulated, although about 200 people have remained there despite orders to leave.

There was another recent study about in vitro prevention - great effectiveness of Niclosamide. That's often used for tapeworm.

It seems like there is a lot of overlap between anti parasite and anti viral.

Also relevant is oxygen and pH - get that pH up, get that oxygen in the blood, that could be prevention, cure, treatment.

The Fed Gov needs to stup up and do something like spend the money on the studies so that in the future the US won't be so pitifully unprepared.

Lock down is not a solution. Hydroxychloroquine is not a new drug, but they're just finding out now that it works.

Why didn't we know this this worked a long time ago? What is the pathetic failing of the FDA that has allowed this pitiful state of affairs?

Defense Giants Raytheon and United Technologies spin off key segments to gain merger approval: (thats a nice combo)

In order to clear the last holdup from the U.S. government, Raytheon agreed to divest its military airborne radio business, while United Technologies agreed to divest its GPS and space optical businesses.

On April 3, Raytheon (NYSE:RTN) and United Technologies (NYSE:UTX) successfully closed their merger after clearing the last regulatory hurdles the previous week. The merger will create a defense behemoth that generated $74 billion in revenues during 2019. The new company will be named Raytheon Technologies and will begin trading on April 3 under the stock symbol RTX.

Preceding the merger, United Technologies spun off its HVAC division Carrier (CARR) and its elevator division Otis (OTIS) into separate companies, both of which have been added to the S&P 500.

Raytheon Technologies

To complete the merger, each share of Raytheon was converted to 2.3348 shares of Raytheon Technologies, while each share of United Technologies was converted to one share of the combined company.

Raytheon is a major U.S. defense and industrial manufacturing company with its core operations in weapons and military and commercial electronics. After spinning of the necessary divisions, United Technologies brings its aerospace businesses to the combined company, including Collins Aerospace, one of the largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products in the world.

The new company will be led by United Technologies Chairman and CEO Greg Hayes and headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

"Today, we introduce Raytheon Technologies as an innovation powerhouse that will deliver advanced technologies that push the boundaries of known science," Tom Kennedy, executive chairman of Raytheon Technologies, said. "Our platform-agnostic, diversified portfolio brings together the best of commercial and military technology, enabling the creation of new opportunities across aerospace and defense for decades to come."

United Technologies closed trading at $86.01 per share for a market cap of $74.50 billion, a price-earnings ratio of 13.42, an operating margin of 11.64% and a cash-debt ratio of 0.16, while Raytheon closed trading at $116.96 for a market cap of $116.96, a price-earnings ratio of 9.8, an operating margin of 16.36% and a cash-debt ratio of 0.79.

Over the first quarter of calendar 2020, Raytheon shares dropped 46%, while United Technologies shares were down 42%, resulting in the companies trading near or below their intrinsic value according to the discounted cash flow model and Peter Lynch earnings lines.

While the combined company will have the advantage of scale and complementary operations, which could help it gain more market share, there may not be much market share to gain in the immediate future. During times of economic crisis, governments typically cut spending on aerospace and defense contracts. Thus, declines in quarterly revenue may drive shares lower in the short term, despite the company's long-term value and current undervaluation.

Additionally, some analysts and investors hold that the low amount of cost-cutting synergies make the merger pointless from a shareholder perspective.

"Raytheon brings very little applicable technology to [United Technologies] aerospace offerings," Daniel Loeb (Trades, Portfolio) wrote in a letter to United Technologies' board in June of 2019. "The benefits of Raytheon's cyber and data analysis capabilities are not quantifiable and could be replicated through commercial collaboration or supply agreements."

In the letter, Loeb stated that Third Point planned to vote against the merger, though the firm only cut its holding in United Technologies by 13.22% and invested approximately $177 million in shares of Raytheon in the fourth quarter of 2019.

‘Heard it coming like a train’: Small town near Palm Springs sees 12 earthquakes

The small town of Anza near Palm Springs, California, shook for hours Friday evening into Saturday morning, after it was hit by a 4.9 earthquake followed by 11 aftershocks over a five-hour period, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Data shows the first quake hit at 6:53 p.m. and reports posted to the USGS show people felt it as far as 100 miles away from the epicenter, including multiple reports in Los Angeles. Anza, with a population of about 3,000, is about 43 miles south of Palm Springs.

Aftershocks began within one minute and continued until just before 5 a.m. Saturday on the west coast. They ranged from 2.6 to 3.7, the USGS data shows.

The White House coronavirus task force had its biggest fight yet on Saturday, pitting economic adviser Peter Navarro against infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci. At issue: How enthusiastically should the White House tout the prospects of an antimalarial drug to fight COVID-19?

This drama erupted into an epic Situation Room showdown.

Behind the scenes: Trump's coronavirus task force gathered in the White House Situation Room on Saturday at about 1:30pm, according to four sources familiar with the conversation. Vice President Mike Pence sat at the head of the table.

Numerous government officials were at the table, including Fauci, coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx, Jared Kushner, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, and FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn.

Behind them sat staff, including Peter Navarro, tapped by Trump to compel private companies to meet the government's coronavirus needs under the Defense Production Act.

Toward the end of the meeting, Hahn began a discussion of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, which Trump believes could be a "game-changer" against the coronavirus.

Hahn gave an update about the drug and what he was seeing in different trials and real-world results.

Then Navarro got up. He brought over a stack of folders and dropped them on the table. People started passing them around.

"And the first words out of his mouth are that the studies that he's seen, I believe they're mostly overseas, show 'clear therapeutic efficacy,'" said a source familiar with the conversation. "Those are the exact words out of his mouth."

Navarro's comments set off a heated exchange about how the Trump administration and the president ought to talk about the malaria drug, which Fauci and other public health officials stress is unproven to combat COVID-19.

Fauci pushed back against Navarro, saying that there was only anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine works against the coronavirus.

Researchers have said studies out of France and China are inadequate because they did not include control groups.

Fauci and others have said much more data is needed to prove that hydroxychloroquine is effective against the coronavirus.

As part of his role, Navarro has been trying to source hydroxychloroquine from around the world. He's also been trying to ensure that there are enough domestic production capabilities inside the U.S.

Fauci's mention of anecdotal evidence "just set Peter off," said one of the sources. Navarro pointed to the pile of folders on the desk, which included printouts of studies on hydroxychloroquine from around the world.

Navarro said to Fauci, "That's science, not anecdote," said another of the sources.

Navarro started raising his voice, and at one point accused Fauci of objecting to Trump's travel restrictions, saying, "You were the one who early on objected to the travel restrictions with China," saying that travel restrictions don't work. (Navarro was one of the earliest to push the China travel ban.)

Fauci looked confused, according to a source in the room. After Trump imposed the travel restrictions, Fauci has publicly praised the president's restriction on travel from China.

Pence was trying to moderate the heated discussion. "It was pretty clear that everyone was just trying to get Peter to sit down and stop being so confrontational," said one of the sources.

Eventually, Kushner turned to Navarro and said, "Peter, take yes for an answer," because most everyone agreed, by that time, it was important to surge the supply of the drug to hot zones.

The principals agreed that the administration's public stance should be that the decision to use the drug is between doctors and patients.

Trump ended up announcing at his press conference that he had 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine in the Strategic National Stockpile.

COVID-19 Travel Update: Fauci Says Cruising Is OK If You Are Healthy

Speaking at a White House press conference tonight to provide updates on the COVID-19 Coronavirus situation, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), told reporters if you are healthy, there is no reason to eschew cruise vacations.

But the fact is that if you have…an individual who has an underlying condition, particularly an elderly person who has an underlying condition, I would recommend strongly that they do not go on a cruise ship.”

A report today in Travel Market Report, a news site for travel advisors, quoted a spokesperson from industry trade group CLIA as saying, “Any action to restrict cruising is unwarranted, and at odds with the World Health Organization which ‘continues to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks.’”

The spokesperson continued, “Singling out the travel and tourism industry, and cruise lines specifically, will have significant detrimental impacts — some possibly irreversible — on the national and local economies.”

The industry supports 1.18 million jobs and $50.2 billion in annual wages, including over 300,000 jobs in South Florida.

Major cruise lines’ stocks continued to get hammered today in one of Wall Street’s worst days ever. Shares in Carnival Corp., Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Ltd., are all down more than 50% from mid-January.

Researchers conducted the study using a prototype array at Stanford University, where Spica was a postdoctoral fellow for several years.

“This is the first time that fiber-optic seismology has been used to derive a standard measure of subsurface properties that is used by earthquake engineers to anticipate the severity of shaking,” says coauthor Greg Beroza, professor in Stanford University’s School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences.

To transform a fiber-optic cable into a seismic sensor, the researchers connect an instrument called a laser interrogator to one end of the cable. It shoots pulses of laser light down the fiber. The light bounces back when it encounters impurities along the fiber, creating a “backscatter signal” that is analyzed by a device called an interferometer.

Changes in the backscatter signal can reveal how the fiber stretches or compresses in response to passing disturbances, including seismic waves from earthquakes. The technique is called distributed acoustic sensing, or DAS, and has been used for years to monitor the health of pipelines and wells in the oil and gas industry.

The study extends previous work with the three-mile Stanford test loop by producing high-resolution maps of the shallow subsurface, which scientists can use to see which areas will undergo the strongest shaking in future earthquakes, Beroza says.
