More than a dozen NYC inmates test positive for COVID-19

At least 19 inmates and 12 New York City Department of Corrections employees have tested positive for COVID-19, the department announced Saturday.

But an independent watchdog called The Board of Correction said 21 inmates at Rikers Island have tested positive for the virus, NBC New York reported.

A federal inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn also tested positive for coronavirus, marking the first confirmed case in the federal jail system, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. The inmate complained of chest pains three days after arriving at the prison and was taken to an outside hospital where he was tested for COVID-19. After the test came back positive, the inmate was returned to prison and placed in isolation.

The latest figures come a day after Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city is "now the epicenter of this crisis" in the United States.”

I think that it may be significant if Bill Gates is descended from Frederick Gates, and it seems possible, if not likely. John D Rockefeller, around the turn of the twentieth century, was believed to be the richest man on Earth, like Bill Gates some hundred years later. John D Rockefeller also was embroiled in the most significant fight with the U.S. Government who tried to curb Standard Oil's apparent monopoly and what it saw as unfair practices coming out of that monopoly, in a very similar way that Gates and Microsoft were involved in similar battles. How does this relate to Frederick Gates? John D Rockefeller used Frederick Gates as his number one adviser, and often said Frederick Gates was the smartest businessman he knew. Frederick Gates became rich is his own right, most likely through his association with Rockefeller. In a biography about Frederick Gates I read some years ago, Gates was quoted in telling this story on how he met Rockefeller: Apparently, Gates met Rockefeller on a train journey, possibly finding a way (both had strong links to the Baptist Church) to be invited into Rockefeller's private rail car. Rockefeller complained to Gates that he was loosing money he invested in silver mines in Colorado, apparently through silver miners spiriting the silver out undetected. He said he would reward anyone who could find out how this was being done, so they could catch the culprits. Frederick Gates then travelled on trains passing through the area of the silver mines, on the cheapest coach fares, so as to be seated with miners traveling to and from the mines. He soon befriended the miners, and listened closely to their stories about the silver mines. He quickly uncovered the means by which the silver was being smuggled out, and passed this on to Rockefeller. Gates was rewarded with his role as adviser to Rockefeller. Apparently, although he could easily afford to travel first class, Frederick Gates always bought the cheapest tickets when traveling, to maintain contact with the common man, and what was happening in that world. It is interesting to note that Bill gates also always travels coach class and gives a similar reason. Although Rockefeller had an apparently very public persona, he also was known for keeping his family life very private. My own grandfather, who came to the US when Rockefeller was amassing his wealth, was a keen follower of Rockefeller. He often told me Rockefeller anecdotes. One was that John D Rockefeller had a small house on the outreaches of his estate where he raised his children, as if he were a lowly employee on the estate. His children shared a bicycle and were kept in the dark about the family's wealth, until they were sent off to school. Frederick Gates himself was a very private person and kept his family and own dealings away from the public gaze, except for his work setting up Rockefeller's charitable foundations, which was where the public were directed when enquiring about the Rockefeller's. This could be seen as echoed in Bill Gates present public persona. What might mitigate against this connection is that the Frederick Gates and his family seemed very well settled on the East Coast, rarely moving much further west than Chicago. However, it could also be possible, after Frederick passed on, to help maintain the family's privacy, they could well have moved on to Seattle.

ADDED (August 27, 2014): It is most uncanny, that both Gates' were and still are heavily involved with the destruction of the American education system.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The staid office where Rachel Levine works as the Keystone State’s top doctor is lined with family photos, including one perched high on a shelf that was taken on a vacation long ago, when her children were young and she was a broad-shouldered man named Richard.

Levine is the highest-ranking transgender official in Pennsylvania and one of only a handful serving in elected or appointed offices nationwide. For many Americans, the faces of the debate over transgender rights have belonged to celebrities — activist Caitlyn Jenner or actress Laverne Cox — rather than the lawmakers and state officials wrangling over the issue.

“I’m very grateful and I’m very honored to be one of those officials,” she said. “I take that responsibility very seriously.”

Nationwide, there are only three elected transgender officials and a smattering of appointed officials on the state and local level. “It’s really bad. There’s hardly anybody. Levine, 58, is one of the appointed state officials, and her foray into politics was more of a fluke than a concerted effort to work in government. In 2014, she was a top doctor at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and served on the board of Equality Pennsylvania, a statewide gay rights group, when Gov.-elect Tom Wolf (D) asked her to co-chair his transition team for health matters.

Ex-campaign staffers are blasting Michael Bloomberg for reversing his position that his campaign would offer competitive salaries and benefits until the November election, regardless of whether the former mayor became the Democratic presidential nominee.

The New York Times reports that the campaign has since decided to shut down operations, send $18 million to the Democratic National Committee, and instruct the more than 1,500 recently fired employees to apply to the DNC for new jobs.

The now-defunct Bloomberg campaign has also instructed ex-staffers they will be “fed into a competitive hiring process,” and are not guaranteed a job, reports the news agency.

“I’m so sorry I worked for this guy. I thought he was totally different,” said former field organizer Jane Conrad, who the news agency reports was recruited to the campaign. “He took me out of my job for his own gain.”

About a dozen other ex-staffers told the Times that they were drawn to the Bloomberg campaign because of the job security and benefits, and were scared to speak out publicly because they were temporarily still on his payroll.

Politico reports on another ex-staffer, who also requested anonymity and blasted Bloomberg for firing them during a national emergency: “He has left us with no health insurance during this pandemic. I have a family and do not know what we will do at the end of the month.”

Amol Jethwani, another former staffer, remarked on Twitter that while he was “disappointed” Bloomberg “had just fired his whole campaign staff,” he was “not surprised that a billionaire is cheating scum,” reports the news agency.

The Bloomberg campaign assured field organizers during the hiring process that they could expect $6,000 a month, an array of benefits, and employment until the general election, Politico reported.

An unsigned Bloomberg campaign memo obtained by the Times explains the change in plans and new decision to terminate the campaign apparatus.

“While we considered creating our own independent entity to support the nominee and hold the president accountable, this race is too important to have many competing groups with good intentions but that are not coordinated and united in strategy and execution,” said the memo.
