Pete Buttigieg Warns Black Americans of Another Civil War

Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Tuesday warned Black Americans of a new civil war if the federal government failed to end racist institutions and pay reparations for slavery.

“If we do not tackle the problem of racial inequality in my lifetime, I am convinced that it will upend the American project in my lifetime,” he warned. “It brought our country to its knees once and if we do not act, it could again.”

Buttigieg spoke about racial issues during a Chicago speech at Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Citizenship Education Fund.

The South Bend mayor spoke about the burden he carried after a white police officer shot and killed a black man who was suspected of breaking into cars. He acknowledged that there was much more to do on issues of race in the police department, but that was only the beginning.

“Yes, the uniform is burdened by racism, but it goes far beyond that, our health care system is burdened by racism … we know that our housing is burdened by racism … our schools are burdened by racism,” he said.

He spoke about the need for racial reparations, citing the “compound interest” owed to the black community after slavery.

“Every dollar plundered 150 years ago costs the descendants of the victim a thousand today,” he said.

Buttigieg recalled his campaign theme of freedom, security, and democracy, noting that he benefited from white privilege.

“It is going to take extra effort applying our deepest values and our biggest ideas to drive out the darkness,” he said. “And it is candidly particularly urgent that we hear this from any candidate that runs for office with the benefits and privileges of whiteness on his or her side.”

Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) introduced legislation on Tuesday meant to halt the use of Department of Defense (DOD) computer networks by users for sharing or procuring pornographic images of children.

The End National Defense Network Abuse (END Network Abuse) was introduced in the wake of in an investigation called “Project Flicker” carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This investigation identified over 5,000 individuals, including many affiliated with DOD, who were subscribed to child porn websites.

The Pentagon's Defense Criminal Investigative Service subsequently identified hundreds of DOD-affiliated individuals as suspects involved in accessing child pornography, several of whom used government devices to view and share the images.

The END Network Abuse Act would require the Pentagon to enter into agreements with groups including law enforcement, child protection services, social services, and trauma-informed healthcare providers in order to cut down or halt the spread and impact of these images on DOD networks. The bill would also upgrade the training and technical expertise of the military organizations involved in investigating these types of crimes.

The bill is being co-sponsored by Reps. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and T.J. Cox (D-Calif.).

The National Criminal Justice Training Center, one of the groups that has thrown its weight behind the bill, reported in 2018 that DOD's network was ranked 19th out of almost 3,000 nationwide networks on the amount of peer-to-peer child pornography sharing.

Spanberger described the issues of child sexual exploitation and abuse as “horrific crimes.”

“The notion that the Department of Defense’s network and Pentagon-issued computers may be used to view, create, or circulate such horrifying images is a shameful disgrace, and one we must fight head on,” Spanberger said in statement.

Meadows added that the “peer-to-peer trading of child pornography is an unacceptable practice, and federal agencies cannot allow their networks to become a platform for it.”

There is a Senate version of the bill that was introduced in May by Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska). A spokesperson for Spanberger told The Hill that while there are no set dates in either the House or Senate for marking up the bill, the sponsors are trying to pass it “both as individual bills and as amendments” to other legislative packages.

Multiple health care and child protection groups have expressed support for the bill, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Children’s Alliance, and the National Children’s Advocacy Center.

Brexit Party MEPs have defended turning their backs on the European Parliament chamber during the playing of the EU’s ‘national’ anthem because they say the bloc should not be treated as a country.

The opening of the parliament in Strasbourg, France, was marked by protest, with pro-Catalan separatists demonstrating outside the building over former Catalonia president Carles Puigdemont and colleague Toni Comin being barred from taking their seats in the EU parliament.

The anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats led their own protest inside the chamber, wearing yellow t-shirts with “stop Brexit” on the front and “Bollocks to Brexit” on the back of some — in reference to one of their May 2019 European Parliament campaign slogans.

It was the Brexit Party’s demonstration against the globalist bloc that garnered the most disapproval from establishment politicians and negative attention in the mainstream media, however, when the eurosceptic MEPs turned their backs to the chamber during the rendition of the European Union’s ‘national’ anthem, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, with Europhiles and the European Parliament President Antonio Tajani branding the move disrespectful.

Asked by anchorman Adam Boulton if she thought it was “rude” to turn her back during the EU’s anthem, the Brexit Party Member of European Parliament said: “I think it was rude to claim that the British people are part of a nation other than their own.”

France Blasts ‘Hysterical’ Migrant Policy of Italy’s Salvini

ROME — French government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye said on Tuesday that the behavior of Italian interior minister Matteo Salvini on migration issues was “unacceptable” in reference to the recent confrontation with the Sea-Watch NGO.

“I think the Italian government has not been up to the standards it should be,” said Ms. Ndiaye in an interview on French television Tuesday morning. “The behavior of Mr. Matteo Salvini on the migration issue is unacceptable.”

The French spokeswoman’s words followed a major stand-off between the Italian populist government and the German NGO Sea-Watch, which illegally docked at Lampedusa last weekend to unload the 42 African migrants it was carrying.

Italian police subsequently impounded the NGO vessel and arrested the ship’s captain, the 31-year-old activist Carola Rackete.

In her interview, Ms. Ndiaye said that Mr. Salvini has been employing a “strategy of hysterization, which consists of blowing out of proportion a subject that is a painful subject, a complex subject, and over which the European Union and France have been in solidarity with Italy.”

The French spokeswoman said that rules had been established at the level of the European Union (EU) and that these rules had been accepted by Italy.

“These maritime laws tell us that when there are people who are in distress on the sea, they must be deposited in the nearest safe harbor, and in this case they are Italian ports,” she said.

She added, however, that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that come to the rescue of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean should also “be cautious in the way they act.”

Mr. Salvini, who also heads Italy’s most powerful political party, the Lega, responded immediately to the French spokeswoman, urging France to open in own ports to migrants if it feels so strongly about it.

“My behavior on immigration is unacceptable?” Salvini tweeted. “The French government should stop insulting and open its ports, since the Italians have already welcomed (and spent) too much.”

“The next boats? Destination Marseille,” he concluded, in reference to France’s southernmost port city.

Cloudflare Worldwide Outage Caused by Bad Software Deployment

loudfare experienced a worldwide outage today for about 30 minutes, with network performance issues that brought down a multitude of websites and web services all around the world, and triggered "502 Bad Gateway" errors.

While various speculations said that the provider of content delivery network and DDoS mitigation services was being under attack, Cloudfare's John Graham-Cumming says that the 502 errors seen by visitors of Cloudfare sites were actually caused by a spike in CPU utilization on the provider's network.

"This CPU spike was caused by a bad software deploy that was rolled back," adds Graham-Cumming. "Once rolled back the service returned to normal operation and all domains using Cloudflare returned to normal traffic levels."

"This was not an attack (as some have speculated) and we are incredibly sorry that this incident occurred," also stated Graham-Cumming in a post on the company's official blog.

Cancer breakthrough: Scientists discover a new Achilles' Heel of tumors that causes them to self-destruct - and we already have a drug that can target it

Scientists have identified the Achilles' Heel of cancerous tumors, forcing the disease-spreading cells to over-stress and self-destruct.

Experiments showed blocking a specific protein that fuels tumors kills them off.

The technique worked on a range of human forms of the disease and mice with bowel and blood cancer.

What's more there are already drugs that block the chemical called ATF4 - offering hope of the fast-tracking of a revolutionary therapy.

Co-senior author Professor Constantinos Koumenis said: 'What we've learned is we need to go further downstream to block tumor growth in a way that cancer cells can't easily escape, and our study identifies the target to do just that.'

His team said it 'may be its Achilles' Heel'.

Every day millions of our cells 'kill' themselves,helping protect us from potentially harmful ones.

Cancer cells, on the other hand, ignore our immune system's cell-death signals. Finding a way to stop this is the 'Holy Grail' of cancer research.

Dr Koumenis did this by homing in on ATF4 in human bowel, breast and lymphoma cells grown in the lab - and rodents genetically engineered to develop lymphoma.

For years scientists have been trying in vain to target a gene called MYC. It's known to drive cell growth and allow cancer to take over if it's mutated or over-expressed.

Now Dr Koumenis, an oncologist at Pennsylvania University, and colleagues have found ATF4 controls a chemical pathway that works in tandem with the gene.

Stopping it in its tracks causes cancer cells to produce too much protein and die, say the researchers.

The findings published in Nature Cell Biology could open the door to a completely fresh approach.

Inhibitors that cease production of ATF4 (activating transcription factor 4) already exist. It has been linked to a host of diseases including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Lead author Dr Feven Tameire said: 'This shows us the potential impacts of targeting ATF4 in MYC-dependent tumors - something we're already studying.

'We're also working to confirm this approach will not cause any serious off-target effects.'

Normal versions of MYC control healthy cell growth. But when it is mutated - or there is too much - it sets off a chain reaction that helps tumors develop and spread.

There is currently no specific way to target it so the focus has increasingly been on other ways to stop the process indirectly.

Marvel To Welcome Its First ‘Openly Trans Actor’ In ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

Marvel Studios will be making one small step for trans with the inclusion of actor Zach Barack in "Spider-Man: Far From Home" — a biological woman who identifies as a man.

Speaking with Variety, Barack said that her role as Peter Parker's classmate in the upcoming film will be her first major movie role and a dream come true for trans representation on the big screen. In fact, she says that the superhero stories themselves have something "inherently trans" about them.

"I’m not by any means an expert on comics, but I read them growing up, you know, and they were important. And there’s something very inherently trans about those stories, especially ones where identity and hidden identity is part of them," she told the outlet. "For example, Peter Parker’s journey [in Spider-Man: Homecoming] is a lot about balancing being a teenager and having this other part of your life."

"And that is just so trans, it’s something that I absolutely think I’ve felt on a daily basis sometimes – especially being a transmasculine person because sometimes there’s a pressure to be a different way than I feel naturally inclined to do because I want to fit in, and I have to actively fight that instinct," she continued. "But the fact of the matter is, being in this movie is so beyond incredibly meaningful and I hope that it means something to other people."

Barack said she did not see many trans characters — much less actors — on screen growing up and began to feel represented when Laverne Cox starred on Netflix's "Orange is the New Black."

"I don’t think I actually saw like a person that I consciously knew was actually trans in any form of media until was like maybe 17, 18," she said. "Before that the only thing I’d seen was ‘Boys Don’t Cry,’ which not only doesn’t have a trans person in it, but is a really brutal story and the prospect of coming out wasn’t super exciting after seeing that. When I saw these messages of other people sort of being like, ‘it’s really meaningful’…I remember I cried the first time I saw one of those, because I remember wanting to write those."

The Marvel universe has faced criticism recently for not including enough LGBTQ characters or superheroes, though producers Kevin Feige and Victoria Alonso have promised they will come to fruition. Barack hopes that her inclusion in the "Spider-Man" series will be the spark that causes that revolution.

"I also want intersectionality," she said. "I’m also hoping that these characters can exist in a nuanced way. … I do want to see myself represented on screen, so I do want to see a trans superhero or a queer superhero. And I want it to be hopefully someone who can draw from their experience in real life in that way – [to show] queer people are getting work too. But at the same time, I’m just happy these stories are being told."

DC has largely beaten Marvel to the punch in the representation of LGBT superheroes. The upcoming "Batwoman" at the CW will be openly lesbian on the show. Prior to that, CW's "Supergirl" featured the character Nia Nal, the first transgender hero in television history, played by transgender actor Nicole Maines (a man presenting himself as a woman) and based on the DC Comics character Nura Nal.
