I'm reading "How to Resist Validating President Trump’s View of Sanctuary Cities."

By Masha Gessen in The New Yorker. Her idea is that the right response to Trump is not what Nancy Pelosi said (through a spokesperson):

Pelosi’s spokeswoman Ashley Etienne issued a standard statement: “The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated. Using human beings—including little children—as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable.” Like the media, Pelosi, whose district covers the sanctuary city of San Francisco, didn’t directly challenge the unspoken but clear premise that something terrible would happen to these cities if immigrants came to them.

Such is the framing of the issue by the White House, and the framing of the story by the media, that no one had the one right response to this idea: “But this is the very point of a sanctuary city! Immigrants, regardless of status, are safe in them. Bring them here! They are welcome.”

That's how the piece ends, and I found it a little hard to understand, but I think Gessen is seeing that the responses to Trump are reinforcing what he's saying, that it's bad to have a sudden big influx of economically needy immigrants. Trump wins if he gets the sanctuary city proponents to show that they were just posing as immigrant friendly. He called their bluff. Why did they fold so quickly? They should have kept bluffing: Bring them here! They are welcome!

Nolte: Politico Caught Spreading Fake News About Trump’s Mount Vernon Visit

The far-left and increasingly irrelevant Politico has been caught spreading fake news about President Trump’s visit to Mount Vernon.

Last April, along with French President Emmanuel Macron and the respective first ladies, the president visited Mount Vernon, the famous home of George and Martha Washington. On Wednesday, using the usual-usual “unnamed sources” (which means Trump haters making up shit Resistance reporters want to hear), Politico (feel free to Google the original story — I’m done linking fake news) painted a picture of a “truly bizarre” and ignorant Trump making a fool of himself during the tour.

“If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump said of Washington’s estate, according to three Politico “sources.”

Here are some other bullet points:

“The Macrons, [tour guide] Bradburn has told several people, were far more knowledgeable about the history of the property than the president.”

“Trump asked whether Washington was ‘really rich,’ according to a second person familiar with the visit.”

“While quickly bored by Washington’s home, Trump has been eager to show off his own residence to guests, and has learned some White House history in the process.”

And like most Politico pieces, this one confuses length with depth and insight. There is just one itsy-bitsy problem… None of what Politico reported is true… I know you find it surprising that the very same corporate media who spread the… Russia Collusion Hoax, Covington Hoax, Kavanaugh Hoax, George Zimmerman Hoax, Hands Up, Don’t Shoot Hoax. …would now spread a hoax about Trump’s visit to Mount Vernon, but the Politico report is 100 percent fake news, and we know this because the horse’s mouth is so appalled, it released a statement.

As Townhall’s Matt Vespa first reported, Mount Vernon is so outraged by Politico‘s fake news, it released a damning (and unprecedented) statement repudiating the entire report [emphasis added]: Mount Vernon has a firm, long-standing policy of not commenting on the details of high-profile visits to the home of George Washington. However, we believe in the importance of ensuring that reports about events that take place at Mount Vernon are accurate. As such, we are concerned that the third-party accounts of the Trump-Macron visit released by several media outlets today do not correctly reflect the events that transpired nearly a year ago. Mount Vernon President Doug Bradburn and Regent Sarah Coulson escorted the presidents and first ladies on a tour of the Mansion on April 23, 2018. During the tour, all parties were interested and engaged in the story of George Washington and his beloved home. Conversations touched on topics like business dealings, real estate, and related matters that were of relevance and interest to the touring parties, and questions were asked by both leaders with curiosity and respect. Comments pulled from sources who were not present for the tour do not properly convey the tone and context in which they were delivered.

Politico has not broken a consequential story in years. In fact, this Mount Vernon Hoax is the most attention that garbage fire has attracted in a long, long time … and it was all lies. And I knew the moment I read the story it was all lies, but it just wasn’t worth commenting on because everyone now knows the media are addicted to fabricating this crap while hiding behind their phony sources, so why call even more attention to it? And how do we know Politico‘s sources are phony? Because a media who actually cared about things like truth, accuracy, and integrity would name the sources who burn them.

But our media never do that because our media aren’t interested in reporting the truth. It’s the same with Jake Tapper’s “unnamed source” story about Trump promising a pardon to the Customs and Border Protection Commissioner if he violates our immigration laws. It’s all lies, all fabricated. We know that because CNN and Tapper spent two years lying to us, serially hoaxing us about Russia collusion, George Zimmerman, “hands up, don’t shoot,” the Covington High School boys, and Brett Kavanaugh. Everything the media reports is a lie, a deliberate lie… And if Politico is willing to lie about the small stuff, like a year-old Mount Vernon visit, imagine the lies Politico is willing to tell about things that actually matter.

Ex-Venezuelan general detained in Spain on US warrant

Madrid (AFP) – Former Venezuelan general Hugo Carvajal, head of military intelligence under Hugo Chavez, was held in temporary detention Saturday while Spain waits for a formal US extradition request on charges of cocaine trafficking, judicial sources said.

Carvajal, dubbed “El Pollo” (The Chicken), was taken into custody Friday at his son’s home in Madrid by Spanish police. He made headlines recently by voicing support for Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido.

A judge at a Spainish federal court decided to place Carvajal in provisional detention, while the United States files a “formal extradition request” to judicial authorities, the sources said. The former army general “denied having links to drug trafficking and the FARC” guerrilla group in Colombia, they added. He refused to be handed over to US officials and argued that he now has family ties to Spain.

In a statement, the US Justice Department said if convicted, Carvajal faced a sentence of between 10 years to life in prison over the charges of conspiracy to import more than five tonnes of cocaine into the United States. “No matter the rank or level of influence of an individual, we will continue to pursue and prosecute those who bring deadly drugs into this country in a US court of law,” said prosecutor Geoffrey Berman, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Carvajal has long been sought by US Treasury officials who suspect him of providing support to drug trafficking by FARC guerrillas.

In May 2013, a Florida court accused him of having worked for Colombian drug traffickers from 2004 to 2010. In 2014, Carvajal was arrested on the Dutch island of Aruba where he was Venezuela’s consul, but he fled back to Venezuela after claiming diplomatic immunity. He was the highest-ranking army official to declare his support for Guaido, saying that the six-year Nicolas Maduro presidency had been a disaster. On February 21, he posted a video on Twitter in which he told army officers: “How it all ends will depend on you my brothers in arms” and urging them to stand “on the right side of history.” Maduro then ousted Carvajal and the former military man was accused of “acts of treason.”

Mnuchin says hopes U.S.-China trade talks nearing 'final round'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday a U.S.-China trade agreement would go “way beyond” previous efforts to open China’s markets to U.S. companies and hoped that the two sides were “close to the final round” of negotiations.

Mnuchin, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings, said that he and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would hold two calls next week with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. The officials also were discussing whether more in-person meetings were necessary to conclude an agreement.

“I think we’re hopeful that we’re getting close to the final round of concluding issues,” Mnuchin said.

Beijing and Washington are seeking a deal to end a bitter trade war marked by tit-for-tat tariffs that have cost the world’s two largest economies billions of dollars, disrupted supply chains and rattled financial markets.

Among the issues under discussion are U.S. demands that China open more sectors of its economy to foreign and U.S. firms. Asked whether such an opening would go beyond what was contemplated in the 2016 Bilateral Investment Treaty negotiations, he replied:

“We are making progress, I want to be careful. This is not a public negotiation … this is a very, very detailed agreement covering issues that have never been dealt with before,” Mnuchin said. “This is way beyond anything that looked like a bilateral investment treaty.

The BIT talks, pursued by former President Barack Obama’s administration, stalled as China refused to satisfy U.S. demands to open significant sectors of its economy to foreign investment. The talks were not taken up by the Trump administration, which pursued tariffs on Chinese goods instead, leading to the current talks.

'Multiple' victims in Australia shooting: Police

SYDNEY (AFP) - A shooting in the Australian city of Melbourne early on Sunday (April 14) has left “multiple” victims, police said, but local media reported that there were no fatalities.

“Investigators believe multiple people were shot outside a nightclub near Little Chapel Street and Malvern Road about 3.20am,” the Victoria Police said in a statement.

It did not give any more details including the condition of the victims, but said the shooting occurred in Melbourne’s Prahran district.

Local media said there were three or four victims.

“The exact circumstances are still being established,” police said.

Mass shootings are rare in Australia, which has strict gun laws introduced after 35 people were killed in 1996 at Port Arthur in Tasmania.

A murder-suicide last year which left seven members of a family dead in Western Australia was the country’s worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur case.

Pope Francis Urges Promotion of Organ Donation ‘Culture’

ROME — Pope Francis addressed organ donation Saturday morning, urging Catholics to promote this practice as “an offering to the Lord.” Jesus “has identified himself with those who suffer because of illness, traffic accidents, or work accidents,” the pope said, and, therefore, it “is good for Jesus’ disciples to offer their organs, within legal and moral bounds, because it is a gift made to the suffering Lord, who said that everything we do to a brother in need we do to Him.”

Speaking in the Vatican to members of the Italian Association for the Donation of Organs, Tissues and Cells (AIDO), Francis said it is “important to promote a culture of donation,” favoring “the offering of a part of the body, without disproportionate risks or consequences, as a living donation, and all the organs after a person’s death.” While praising organ donation as an act of “love and altruism,” the pontiff, nonetheless, cautioned against the sale of human organs, which would produce a “commodification of the body or its parts,” which is “contrary to human dignity.”

Citing the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Francis said that organ donation after death “is a noble and meritorious act and is to be encouraged as a [sic] expression of generous solidarity.” “It is not morally acceptable if the donor or his proxy has not given explicit consent,” the Catechism continues. “Moreover, it is not morally admissible to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being, even in order to delay the death of other persons.” For those who do not have a religious faith, Francis said, the donation of organs is a gesture towards needy brothers and sisters, which should be performed “on the basis of an ideal of disinterested human solidarity.” The generous act of donation serves as a counterweight to contemporary threats against life, “such as the case of abortion and euthanasia,” he said, and help people understand that “life is a something sacred.”

Raniere trying to get Mexican witnesses to testify — hopes to have Jane Doe #2 testify she was not 15 when nude photos were taken

Certain Mexican Nxivm members are getting “subpoenas” to appear as witnesses for the Nxivm trial. Sources tell me this is part of a scheme by the Keith Raniere defense team to get Mexican women to “safely” testify for Raniere.

Neither the US Government nor Raniere has jurisdiction to subpoena [or legally require as a subpoena does] anyone in Mexico to come to the US.

The subpoenas are, in effect, mere pieces of paper with no legal force.

They are, however, being served on Mexican women – and an attorney close to the case told Frank Report that this is a step Raniere is taking in order to try to persuade the trial judge (US District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis) to grant his request to have Mexican witnesses for the defense testify via closed-circuit TV, as opposed to their coming to the USA and testifying in person.

Raniere’s argument is that the Mexican women want to testify in support of their Vanguard but are afraid that if they come to the US, the DOJ will arrest them and charge them with Nxivm-related crimes.

Raniere has asked the DOJ to guarantee “safe passage” from the US and back to Mexico for these witnesses since he argues it would be unfair to subject them to possible arrest if they appear for the defense.

In some cases, special clearance from Homeland Security is necessary to get them into the USA – since they do not possess visas.

If the judge and the DOJ do not agree to “safe passage”, Raniere is asking the judge to allow the Mexican women to testify on closed-circuit TV where they could be examined by the defense and cross-examined by the government.

The “subpoenas” are mere show after all – but what Raniere can say – if the Mexican women decline to appear – is that he tried to get “crucial” witness to testify but the government held a blatant threat over their heads – and refused to assure them that, if they came forward and testified, they won’t themselves end up being indicted – as a punitive measure for supporting Raniere.

Raniere suggests witness intimidation on the part of the government.

It might be an issue he can use on appeal if the judge does not grant his request to either compel the prosecution to grant temporary immunity and “safe passage” for Raniere’s Mexican witnesses – or allow them to testify on closed-circuit TV – as they remain outside the jurisdiction of the US DOJ – if he loses the case.

The Mexicans could be indicted anyway in the US, but since they are Mexican citizens and living in Mexico, it is not as cut and dried concerning extradition to the US as it would be for the extradition of a US citizen living in Mexico. [Ask Raniere about that.]
