Mitch McConnell tells 2020 Republicans to run 'independent' of Donald Trump

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Republican senators running for re-election next year should not couple their messaging to President Trump but rather run “independent” campaigns built around how they’ve helped their states.

The Kentucky Republican, who is himself up for re-election, said senators’ races are big enough that they can escape the gravity of the presidential race and establish themselves on their own.

Mr. McConnell also said Republicans must — and can — reverse disastrous losses in the suburbs that cost them their House majority in November’s elections.

“There’s no good reason for your typical suburban resident to be frightened by this Republican Senate,” he told reporters in a briefing on policy and politics as the 100-day mark of the new Congress approaches.

He said Democrats have helped the GOP with its case by running so far to the left on issues such as the Green New Deal, a sweeping environmental and social policy overhaul, and “Medicare for All,” a government-sponsored universal health care plan.

Republican senators can tell voters they’ll guard against that sort of change, he said.

“From a Senate point of view I’m going to be arguing, and I’m encouraging my colleagues to argue, that we’re the firewall against socialism in this country,” Mr. McConnell said.

Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate right now, and have 21 of those seats up in 2020. Democrats are defending 12 seats.

The most endangered seat is probably that of Sen. Doug Jones, an Alabama Democrat who lucked into his victory in a special election in 2017 after a nasty GOP primary left Republicans with flawed nominee Roy Moore. Among other hurdles, Mr. Moore faces accusations that as a lawyer in his 30s he dated teen girls.

Among the GOP’s toughest races are Sens. Cory Gardner in Colorado, Martha McSally in Arizona, Thom Tillis in North Carolina and David Perdue in Georgia.

Democrats said those lawmakers will struggle to walk a line between backing Mr. Trump and building bipartisan accomplishments.

Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said Republicans haven’t been able to find the right balance.

“When President Trump says jump, Leader McConnell and the Republicans just say how high,” Mr. Schumer said.

Mr. McConnell said Republicans should stress their independence.

“My advice to all of our people — take Gardner, and McSally, maybe Tillis and maybe Perdue — paint you’re own picture. What difference has your service made? And our races are big enough that where you can make a case independent of whatever else is going on,” he said.

“I think we’re planning on running independent campaigns, and if they take my advice I think the best argument for us is they are fundamentally trying to change America into something it’s never been, and if you want to make sure that doesn’t happen, go out and elect a Senate Republican majority,” Mr. McConnell said.

‘Breaking Point:‘ Migrant Family Apprehension Up 374 Percent, Say Feds

Agents apprehended 189,584 Family Unit Aliens (FMUA) during the first six months of Fiscal Year 2018, which began on October 1, 2018. During the month of March, Border Patrol agents apprehended 53,077 FMUAs — mostly in the Rio Grande Valley and El Paso Sectors. In addition, agents apprehended another 8,975 Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC). Border Patrol officials define a family unit as one adult parent or guardian traveling with one or more minors. One year earlier, agents apprehended only 8,875 FMUAs and 4,140. In March 2017, agents apprehended 1,126 family units and 1,041 unaccompanied minors.

The nearly 190,000 migrant families apprehended during the first six months of the year compares to 107,212 for all of Fiscal Year 2018 and 75,622 for all of Fiscal Year 2017.

Due to overcrowding, Border Patrol began directly releasing non-criminal migrants on their own recognizance to nonprofits, charities, or to bus stations. Since the new policy began on March 19, Hastings said that more than 11,000 have been released. All migrants undergo a criminal background and medical check prior to release.

The relatively new human smuggling tactic of crossing migrants in large groups is also negatively impacting the agency’s ability to prosecute its national security mission. Border Patrol defines a large migrant group as more than 100 migrants. So far this year, Border Patrol agents have encountered 100 large groups — 60 of those in very remote areas. During all of FY 2018, Border Patrol agents only encountered 13 large groups — only two in FY 2017.

During a two-day period in March, Rio Grande Valley Agents encountered seven large groups totaling nearly 900 migrants between them.

The largest number of migrant family units apprehended so far this year came to the U.S. from Guatemala (90,447). This is followed by Honduras (72,728), El Salvador (17,396), and Mexico (1,573). For Unaccompanied minors, 16,392 came from Guatemala, 9,138 from Honduras, 5,024 from Mexico and 4,479 from El Salvador.

The record number of migrant family apprehensions forced Border Patrol leaders to divert 40 percent of agents from their national border security duties and place them on humanitarian duties including processing, transportation, medical screening, and hospital watch, Hastings stated. Currently, Border Patrol agents are referring 63 migrants per day to medical facilities at a tremendous cost to the agency and taxpayers. Hastings said that Border Patrol has spent $4 million on “hospital watch” so far this year. This cost is for the agents who have to stay with migrants who are in the hospital due to illness or injury. This is on pace to exceed $12 million for this fiscal year.

Phoenix Police: 4 Homeland Security agents taken to the hospital following shooting in Ahwatukee AZ

Federal agents fatally shot a woman while serving an arrest warrant for human smuggling Thursday near Ahwatukee, according to authorities.

Another person also was shot and wounded, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

Three other people also were in a vehicle with them when the shooting occurred, Phoenix police said.

Four agents also were taken to a hospital with injuries, though they were not considered life-threatening.

Phoenix police are investigating the shooting that involved Homeland Security Investigations agents, according to police officials.

HSI agents attempted to stop a vehicle to make an arrest when gunfire was exchanged, said Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department.

There were five people in the suspect vehicle. One, an adult female, was pronounced dead at the scene, Thompson said.

The other four individuals were transported to a local hospital, and their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Thompson said.

Police did not provide further details on their injuries.

ICE issued the following statement,which confirmed that two people were shot:

“On April 11, 2019, HSI special agents discharged their firearms, striking two suspects while executing a federal felony arrest warrant connected to human smuggling in Ahwatukee, Arizona. The Phoenix Police Department is the lead agency investigating the incident." according to a statement from Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe, ICE Public Affairs officer.

"In accordance with agency protocol, ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident. The agency will not comment further while this review remains ongoing,” the statement said.

ICE officials did not identify the names on the warrants or the two people shot by agents.

Four Homeland Security special agents were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening medical evaluation. Further details were not made available.

Agency officials would only say the agents were met with a threat that prompted the agents to respond by firing weapons.

Phoenix police officers responded around 10 a.m. to the area near 48th and Kiowa streets, between Warner and Elliot roads.

According to Thompson, Phoenix officers were not involved in the human smuggling investigation or the shooting.

Two or three vehicles were involved in an apparent crash on 48th Street. One of the vehicle's windows appeared to have been shot out.

A vehicle also appeared to have run into a wall in the neighborhood and knocked down a tree.

Nick Dalton, a resident in the neighborhood, said he was in his garage when a large number of gunshots rang out.

"The rounds just kept going and going and going," Dalton said.

By far, it was the last thing you would expect to happen, he added.

Sonja Redmon, another resident of the neighborhood, heard the shootout and thought that fireworks and explosives were going off.

"I immediately started praying," Redmon said. "I was saying, 'You know, Lord, forgive me and try to keep everybody safe.'"

…You need only to fill in the blanks using yet-to-be-determined passages from the report.

So without further ado, we present the talking points Democrats will provide for the elite media to dutifully repeat and amplify:

Talking Point 1 (mildest of the four): While we thank and commend Mr. Mueller for his work, the scope of his investigation was necessarily limited by his specific mandate and the special counsel law itself. There are just so many areas Mueller was not able to probe, thus at least six, and perhaps as many as nine, of our congressional committees must take the baton and continue running down the track. It is undoubtedly the highest and best use of our time, because as legislators we are elected to investigate (LINOs – legislators in name only?). After all, even though the financial disclosure forms Trump filed during the presidential campaign are far more revealing than any tax return, we must do everything possible to force the release of Trump’s tax returns anyway. He is the first presidential candidate in 40 years not to release his tax returns, so he must be hiding something. And, of course, we need to dig into the entire history of the Trump organization, because we have deep suspicions all manner of crookedness is hidden in there.

Talking Point 2: While the conduct outlined does not quite rise to the level of criminality, the report details events and conversations that are deeply disturbing, primarily (fill in most easy-to-spin passages of report). Remember that not all improper, shameful, and traitorous conduct is felonious. Though the special counsel falls just short of uncovering collusion, he also refused to issue a recommendation on obstruction of justice. We all know that the attorney general is little more than a bootlicking hack taking orders from Trump, ipso facto his finding of no obstruction is likely some sort of coverup. And even though we lauded Rod Rosenstein for his stewardship of the special counsel investigation, even Rosenstein, in concurring with Barr’s judgment on obstruction, has evidently fallen under the spell of the president and, like Barr, cannot be trusted.

Talking Point 3: Yes, the report contains no direct evidence of anything other than process and financial crimes that occurred either during the special counsel investigation itself or before Trump ran for president, and those have already been litigated. But there is ample circumstantial evidence of conspiracy between Trump operatives and the Russians to interfere in the election. For example, (fill in name of alleged conspirator) and (fill in name of another alleged conspirator) spoke to (fill in name of alleged Russian conspirator) less than two weeks apart. Mueller is by nature conservative in his judgments, no matter that an overwhelming majority of the lawyers he hired are politically active, anti-Trump Democrats who contributed to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or both. And regardless of whether he felt it appropriate to launch military-style raids on Michael Flynn and Roger Stone. So we must investigate this circumstantial evidence and connect the dots ourselves.

Talking Point 4: The redactions in this report are clear evidence that someone is trying to hide the parts that likely reveal actual collusion. The crooked attorney general and deplorable president used the cover of (choose one: grand jury testimony/classified information/interviews with completely innocent subjects) to redact the truth. Yes, all of that testimony and information must be redacted by law or by long-standing department regulations and precedent, but we nevertheless repeat our demand that the entire report, unredacted, be released, or we will launch yet more investigations on the cover-up by Barr and, of course, Trump. What are you hiding with these redactions, Mr. Barr?…"

White House proposed releasing immigrant detainees into ‘sanctuary cities’ to target political foes: report

The Trump administration proposed releasing immigrant detainees onto the streets of “sanctuary cities”–including San Francisco– on at least two occasions within the past six months as retribution against the president’s political enemies, The Washington Post reported, citing unnamed Department of Homeland Security officials and emails.

The proposal was first floated in November amid reports of a large migrant caravan from Central America making its way to the southern border. The other time it was considered– in February– occurred during a standoff between Trump and Democrats over border wall funding.

It was rejected both times by immigration agencies, the report said. A Nov. 16 email from the White House to officials at several agencies reportedly asked whether migrants could be arrested and bused to “small-and mid-sized sanctuary cities” and other Democratic strongholds.

The White House and DHS did not immediately respond to Fox News early Friday for comment.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco was considered one of the areas targeted, according to the paper. Pelosi blasted the plan Thursday, calling it “despicable” to use “human beings — including little children — as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants.”

The proposal was intended to alleviate crowded detention centers, the White House told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). An ICE official responded the inquiry was littered with budgetary and liability issues, but said “there are PR risks as well.” Trump has repeatedly blasted “sanctuary cities,” areas where local authorities refuse to cooperate with immigration agencies.

“This was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion,” a White House statement to the paper said.

QAnon believer running against Rep. Al Lawson in north Florida says he plans to "decapitate the swamp creatures"

A Florida bookseller appears to be the first QAnon follower to run for Congress – and is currently the only Republican seeking to challenge incumbent Rep. Al Lawson, a Democrat.

Matthew Lusk is the first Republican to declare his candidacy in Florida’s 5th congressional district, Florida Politics reported. That may be because Republicans believe they have no chance: The district stretches from Orlando to Jacksonville in an awkward curlicue through central and northern Florida, and was evidently engineered to have a majority African American population. Lawson was elected last November with 66.8 percent of the vote.

“I belong to no secret societies or clubs, Q is one of my issues because it’s definitely a leak from high places,” Lusk told the outlet. “I follow Q, but I don’t know who or what Q is.”

QAnon, a bizarre pro-Trump conspiracy theory born out of anonymous postings on the far-right forum 4chan, posits that a high-level government insider who goes by “Q” is leaking clues to Trump supporters about what is really going on in the deep state. The conspiracy theory involves outlandish claims that Hillary Clinton and other high-profile Democrats are part of a child sex trafficking ring that Trump is secretly working to bring down. A best-selling book about QAnon “claims that Democrats murder and eat children and that the government created AIDS, polio and Lyme disease” and that “the world is run by a Satanic cabal led by Hillary Clinton,” MarketWatch reported.

Lusk did not get into details about his specific beliefs but said his “knowledge of the evil power players” is what sparked his interest in mounting a congressional bid.

“I pray over making wise decisions and am taking the sword of truth to D.C. to decapitate the swamp creatures, and I’ll chase off the RINOS while I’m there,” Lusk told Florida Politics. “There is plenty of danger and opportunity at the State level, but the State will be toast if Federal problems and mega-Crime syndicates are not brought to justice soon.”

Lusk insisted to The Daily Beast that he is not a “brainwashed cult member” but wrote online that “Q” has a “very articulate screening of past events, a very articulate screening of present conditions, and a somewhat prophetic divination of where the political and geopolitical ball will be bouncing next.”

“Q” is even listed as one of the issues on his campaign website, though the page simply says, “Who is…………..Q.”

Lusk told The Daily Beast that he would not use QAnon to guide his actions as a lawmaker unless “criminal leaks or seditious activity” revealed in the clues “warranted an investigation.”

QAnon is far from the only conspiracy theory Lusk subscribes to. The front page of his campaign website says he is concerned he will be “Arkancided,” a reference to the decades-long conspiracy theory that the Clintons had their Arkansas associates murdered.

Lusk has put about $2,000 into his campaign. He told the outlet he is self-funding until he gets a “full understanding of the law.”

While Lusk appears to be the first open QAnon follower to run for Congress, several elected officials have pushed QAnon conspiracy theories publicly.

South Carolina state Rep. Lin Bennett has posted about QAnon for months on her Facebook page. “They’re legit,” she wrote of Q. “And they haven’t been wrong.”

In December, Pam Patterson, a city councilwoman in San Juan Capistrano, California, endorsed Q in her farewell address on the council floor.

“To quote Q, number 2436, for far too long, we have been silent and allowed our bands of strength that we once formed to defend freedom and liberty to deteriorate. We became divided. We became weak. We elected traitors to govern us,” Paterson said. “Where we go one, we go all. Q.”

Months after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency for the border crisis, progress is finally being made. The Department of Defense authorized nearly $1 billion for Trump’s campaign-promised border wall.

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that two different companies have been given $976 million in contracts to start building portions of the border wall, CNN reported.

SLSCO Ltd., a company based in Texas, has been given a $789 million contract to build a wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and Barnard Construction Company, based in Montana, has been given a $187 million contract for work in Yuma, Arizona.

Department of Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Jamie Davis said that the wall in the El Paso border sector in Santa Teresa would include a “30-foot bollard fencing and a five-foot anti-climb plate.”

The Yuma sector project includes an “18-foot bollard fencing and a five-foot anti-climb plate.”

These projects are both expected to be completed by October 2020, one month before the presidential election.

These are the first funds awarded for the border wall since Trump announced a national emergency for the border crisis in February.

The Pentagon announced its decision to transfer military funds for border wall construction last month before finally awarding the funds on Tuesday.

As expected, Democrats were absolutely furious.

In a media release published on March 25, a number of Senate Democrats demanded answers from acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan.

“We strongly object to both the substance of the funding transfer, and to the Department implementing the transfer without seeking the approval of the congressional defense committees and in violation of provisions in the defense appropriation itself,” the letter read.

It’s important to note that the Pentagon doesn’t need approval from Congress before transferring funds.

But it’s understandable why Democrats would be upset — the Department of Defense is practically handing Trump the 2020 election.

Trump supporters voted for him with the expectation that he would do something to stop the border crisis, but he has been somewhat ineffective as lawmakers have refused to cooperate.

Now that portions of the wall are finally being built, Trump’s base will be energized and some disillusioned conservatives might be more willing to throw their support behind Trump once again.
