UK Prime Minister Theresa May has finally hinted at a second Brexit referendum and admitted defeat on a third meaningful vote for her deal in a furious exchange with opposition MPs in the House of Commons.

May was speaking, for the first time, since she was in Brussels last week and the European Union admitted a Brexit delay.

May says she is 'sceptical' about whether allowing MPs indicative votes will produce decision.

May says the government is opposed to the Letwin amendment.

She says the government remains committed to trying to see if a Commons consensus can be reached if her deal is not passed.

But she says she is “sceptical” of this process. In the past when this procedure has been tried, it has produced contradictory conclusions, or no conclusions at all.

How did this flip occur? The power of the presidency has been growing for the better part of a century. But on the British side, the roots of the current crisis trace to the start of the 17th century. The precedent that Bercow cited to justify his move dates to the reign of King James I. Parliament had grown frustrated by the monarch’s attempts to bully the legislature by repeatedly bringing measures up for reconsideration. As a result, Parliament pronounced on April 4, 1604: “That a question being once made, and carried in the affirmative or negative, cannot be questioned again, but must stand as a judgement of the House.”

Over the past four centuries, the precedent has been used not only to curb executive power, but also to foreclose debate on exceptionally divisive issues, as when Speaker James Lowther determined in May 1912 that the House could not consider another bill on women’s suffrage, having already rejected a voting bill that March by a margin of 14.

Many have accused Bercow of wielding the precedent for political reasons because it is well known that he personally opposes Brexit (although as speaker, he is meant to be impartial). This is not the first time in the past months that he has used his position to impede May’s Brexit agenda. Yet, his Brexit views notwithstanding, he is also widely known as a defender of the rights of MPs. As he said on Thursday, “I believe passionately in the institution of Parliament, of the rights of members of this House and their commitment to their duty.” In refusing to work with MPs to find an alternative and instead continually forcing them to vote on her deal, Bercow argued, May was infringing on those rights and undermining that duty.

The speaker’s announcement temporarily put the prime minister in check. Unable to bring her bill up for a vote last week, she had no choice but to go to Brussels and beg the European Union to give her more time. But then, in an unprecedented step, the prime minister pulled a page from the U.S. presidential playbook: She made a direct televised address to the British public, proclaiming to them that “I am on your side” in the face of parliamentary determination to thwart the will of the public by not allowing her deal to be voted through. The address was a rebuke of Bercow and of those in her own coalition and in the opposition who had not come on board with her plan. It was also a remarkable effort by the British executive to harness the power of public opinion to break parliamentary opposition.

Such a move no doubt sounds unremarkable to Americans. Over the course of the 20th century, such appeals have become a prominent strategy in U.S. presidential politics. Franklin Roosevelt regularly went on radio to ask the American people for their support for his experimental programs. Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon regularly appeared on television to rally support for their Vietnam policies. Donald Trump most recently resorted to such a tactic on Jan. 8, when he addressed the American people about the need for a border wall to confront the “national crisis” at the Mexican border.

In Britain, however, such things are just not done. Constitutionally, the prime minister holds more power than the U.S. president, but that power is vested in her position as the leader of a parliamentary majority, not in a direct mandate from the British public. In normal times, that distinction makes the idea of appealing to public opinion to put pressure on MPs unnecessary and unseemly.

But Brexit is not normal times, and May has stronger support from the public than she does from Parliament. On Monday, she took a gamble that that public support could be harnessed to force the speaker to back down and secure her a victory in a third parliamentary vote on her Brexit plan.

There are signs that the move, denounced by many in Britain as Trumpian demagoguery, may have badly misfired. But if her gambit succeeds, May’s Goliath will have effectively wielded the shield of public opinion to protect herself from Bercow’s procedural slingshot. In the process, she will have recaptured the power of the executive against the legislature, restoring the traditional relationship between the two bodies with new and, for many Britons, unsettling tactics.

But all they've seen is a body of MPs not only working against the will of the people but also coming up with a totally unacceptable deal and proving to be both personally and politically unable to measure up to the task.

They've seen a weak government now openly using every last nasty little administrative device to try and force an unwanted deal on the country and a rag tag opposition unable to do anything meaningful about it.

And if that rag-tag opposition could do anything about it, they would only find another way to go against the will of the people themselves anyway.

Home Office funded paedophilia group,

The Home Office secretly gave £30,000 to a group campaigning to legalise paedophilia in the late 1970s, a former civil servant has claimed.

Tim Hulbert told the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse that he had seen the payment on a spreadsheet.

He said the money for the Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) had been marked as a grant to another group.

But the inquiry also heard that a review of his claims had failed to find documentary evidence to support them.

Civil servant Mike Box, who had assisted a 2014 review of allegations of historical child sexual abuse within Westminster, said no trace of any payment to PIE had been found in government records from the era.

Christianity Not A Religion Of Peace Say UK Bureaucrats

An asylum request from an Iranian Christian has been rejected by British bureaucrats. The unidentified man said he converted to Christianity because it is a peaceful religion. This, however, did not sit well with the agency in the U.K. that deals with immigration, crime and police, known as the Home Office.

Nathan Stevens, immigration caseworker at law firm Fadiga & Co., posted photos on social media of what he termed an “unbelievably offensive” Home Office refusal letter. Stevens said he was “shocked” by the strident nature of his client’s asylum rejection.

Government Theology

Having studied the Bible in depth (sarcasm intended), the Home Office cited the book of Revelation as evidence for the violent nature of Christianity. They claimed the prophetic book “is filled with images of revenge, destruction, death, and violence.” But the bureaucrats didn’t stop there -- they cited Jesus’s words in Matthew 10:34, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Officials went on to say that the man’s stated reason for requesting asylum was essentially paradoxical:

“These examples are inconsistent with your claim that you converted to Christianity after discovering it is a ‘peaceful’ religion, as opposed to Islam which contains violence, rage and revenge.”

The Church of England was incensed by the letter, reports The Daily Telegraph. Paul Butler, the Bishop of Durham, who serves the House of Lords, put in his two cents on the matter:

“I am extremely concerned that a Government department could determine the future of another human being based on such a profound misunderstanding of the texts and practices of faith communities.”

MEPs passed the legislation by 348 votes to 274 Tuesday. Opponents had hoped for last-minute amendments to be made but their efforts were in vain.

There are at least 2 issues here.

Firstly, in the case brought by Gina Miller, the Supreme Court ruled that the government could not rely on Royal Prerogative and needed an Act of Parliament to actually withdraw from the EU. Clearly the government did not have the authority to revise the leaving date without going back to the HoC. It is technically 'illegal' in the sense that the government is doing it the wrong way around: they have already requested the deferment and will now place the Statutory Instrument in front of the HoC (tomorrow) for approval to validate what the government has already done.

But as you point out EU law trumps UK law and the EU has already turned the deferment into EU law… so the UK cannot now leave on 29 March! Because EU law says so!

Thus even if the HoC were to vote aginst the SI tomorrow, it would have no effect… the UK is bound by EU law.

What now happens if the EU decides it needs more time to prepare for Brexit and the other 27 agree that the leave date should be further deferred until… say, 25 August 2035… or any other date. They have already changed the date on the basis of an illegal act by HMG… so quite clealy there was no procedure they had to compy with before changing the date for the first time.
