Canada, UAE Conclude Negotiations on a Free-Trade Agreement

The governments of Canada and the United Arab Emirates say they have concluded negotiations on a free-trade agreement.

International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu told a press conference in Toronto on Friday that the next steps include legal review, the signing of the deal and ratification.

UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Thani al-Zeyoudi said the agreement was reached in 47 days, which he called “record time.”

Sidhu said he plans to travel to the UAE with a Canadian trade and investment delegation later this year.

The federal government’s website says bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and the UAE reached $3.4 billion in 2024.

The United Arab Emirates pledged last year to invest around $70 billion in Canada and al-Zeyoudi said he is expecting that announcements about investments will be made soon.

BC’s Unionized Nurses to End Job Action Provincewide to Review Recommendations

The union representing 55,000 nurses in British Columbia has accepted a mediated proposal that could end its weeks-long strike action.

The BC Nurses’ Union says in a statement that its bargaining agent has accepted the recommendations for settlement from mediators Vince Ready and Amanda Rogers, and all job action will cease as of midnight Friday.

The union says its members will review the offer, while outstanding issues on compensation are anticipated to move to binding arbitration this fall.

Nurses have been conducting strike action since the start of July after members voted to reject a tentative contract reached in May between union and the Health Employers Association of B.C. Continue…

175 World Cup Visitors Filed Asylum Claims in Canada, Says IRCC

Ottawa says that 175 people who got approval to come to Canada in connection to the 2026 World Cup have submitted asylum claims.

The country with the largest group of foreign nationals claiming asylum was Ghana with roughly 25 citizens, followed by Egypt, Kenya, and Colombia with approximately 15 claims each; and Bangladesh, China, Nigeria, and Senegal with roughly 10 claims each, according to information provided to The Epoch Times by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Five claims each were also recorded for citizens of Burundi, Nepal, Pakistan, and Ecuador, along with between one to four claims each for a number of additional nations including Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, and Sudan, to arrive at the grand total of 175.

Federal Government Rejects Expansion of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport

The federal government has rejected Ontario’s plan to expand Toronto’s Billy Bishop airport to accommodate jets on a longer runway.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon says public consultations that ended Friday heard feedback on a range of issues, including transportation, economics and quality of life.

MacKinnon says the government won’t pursue any plans that will infringe on public spaces, cause more noise, have significant environmental impacts or hinder the building of housing in Toronto.

He says the government is “exclusively” focused on the approved safety upgrades that are now taking place at the airport.

Mayor Olivia Chow thanked Prime Minister Mark Carney and MacKinnon for “listening to the people of Toronto.”

Chow also called on the province to “return the city’s land,” after Premier Doug Ford’s government recently passed legislation to take over the city’s spot in a tripartite agreement that governs Billy Bishop airport.

Residents of the B.C. Interior village of Clinton are facing an anxious wait to discover the fate of their community after an advancing wildfire forced them to flee.

The community was ordered to evacuate on Friday as flames swept toward it late in the afternoon.

Mayor Roland Stanke said the situation in the community of several hundred residents, about 350 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, was “extremely bad.”

BC Clears Way for FortisBC LNG Expansion in Delta

The British Columbia government has cleared the way for FortisBC to expand its liquefied natural gas facility in Delta by exempting the project from a permit requirement that would normally apply to public utility expansions.

The expansion will increase the facility’s ability to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG), and is expected to create jobs and help reduce emissions by offering an alternative to conventional marine fuels, the province said in a July 24 news release.

The province issued an Order in Council that exempts the Phase 1B expansion of the Tilbury LNG Facility from the need to obtain a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity under the Utilities Commission Act.

The construction phase of the $2 billion expansion is expected to create more than $800 million in GDP and $260 million in tax revenue, as well as generate 1,100 jobs each year over four years, the release says.

FortisBC’s Tilbury LNG Facility supplies LNG for local and international shipping vessels, including BC Ferries and Seaspan.

The Order in Council also enacted regulatory amendments that establish a framework allowing FortisBC and the Musqueam Indian Band to form an equity partnership for project ownership, the release says.

An environmental assessment of Phase 2 of the expansion is also underway, with the government expected to make a decision late in 2026, the release says.

The Phase 1B project remains subject to all other applicable regulatory approvals prior to construction, which may start as early as mid-2027, the province said, adding that the expanded facility would be in service as early as 2031.

U.S. President Donald Trump has shared an AI-generated image depicting a giant filtration barrier along the U.S.-Canada border, in apparent reference to his recent criticism of Canadian wildfire smoke drifting across the border into the United States.

The image, posted on his Truth Social platform on July 25, shows a large air filter stretching miles along the shared border, with a label on one end of the structure that reads “MERV 16 High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter.” On the U.S. side, at the base of the imaginary barrier, is a sign that reads “North America Air Filter Barrier” above the slogan, “Clean Air, Clear Borders.”

Trump has been critical of the Canadian government’s response to wildfires of late. His latest post came a day after he remarked in the Oval Office that he would impose tariffs on Canada in retaliation for smoke from wildfires that has blanketed multiple U.S. states in recent days.

“We’re going to put a big tariff on Canada because of the smoke,” the president told reporters following his announcement on the Americans’ recent advancement in nuclear energy.

“I’ve told Canada they have to do something about it. You know, we’ve never had this problem. All of a sudden, we have this problem with Canada.”

Trump said Monday the U.S. government will hit an array of Canadian products with 50 percent tariffs in 30 days.

American officials said the new levies are a response to provincial bans on U.S. alcohol, Canada’s supply-managed dairy system and quotas on American cars.

Majumdar says Carney ran a campaign promising to handle the American president but has since caved into many of Trump’s demands.

Wildfires Merge, Cross Highway 97 North of Clinton, BC

An update from BC Wildfire Service said the Pear Lake and Fiftynine Creek blazes had combined and remained “very active” on Sunday, moving north and northeast of the Chasm area, about 20 kilometres north of Clinton.

How a Vancouver ATM User With 66 Cards Set Off Years-Long Probe of Online Drug Sales

It was more than three years ago when Vancouver police arrested a man after he was seen using multiple bank cards to make withdrawals at an ATM.

A search revealed he was carrying 66 bank cards and $39,200 in cash.

The strange discovery in March 2023, described in an affidavit by an RCMP cyber crime investigator, would set off a chain of events leading to a years-long probe into nationwide illicit online sales of cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The investigation by RCMP with the help of FINTRAC, Canada’s money laundering watchdog, untangled a web of numbered companies and bank accounts used to allegedly collect, move and disguise the funds.

Despite the B.C. government’s Director of Civil Forfeiture alleging in a lawsuit that a “criminal organization” is behind the websites, no one named as a defendant in the case has faced criminal charges, and the websites targeted by investigators remain online offering a wide range of cannabis and psilocybin products.

The director instead filed a lawsuit in March 2026 seeking to seize funds from the holders of accounts where the money allegedly ended up. Continue…

Carney Calls Byelections in 3 Federal Ridings for August

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections for Aug. 31 in three federal ridings in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia to fill vacant seats in the House of Commons.

The byelections will be held in the Beaches–East York riding in Toronto, the Chicoutimi–Le Fjord riding in Quebec’s Saguenay region, and the North Vancouver–Capilano riding in British Columbia.

Nate Erskine-Smith, who runs the political podcast Uncommons, resigned his seat as MP of Beaches–East Yorkon on July 7. He endorsed Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberal nomination in that riding. Shahnawaz, who had been a long-time staff member in Erskine-Smith’s office, won the Liberal nomination against three competitors on July 18.

The Chicoutimi–Le Fjord seat had been held by Conservative Richard Martel since 2018 until he stepped down on July 7 after being appointed to the Senate by Carney.

Jonathan Wilkinson officially resigned as Liberal MP for North Vancouver–Capilano on June 19 when he was named by Carney as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.

With the three vacancies, the Liberals now hold 172 seats in the House of Commons, including Speaker Francis Scarpaleggia, while the Conservatives hold 139. Meanwhile, Liberal MP for Laurier—Sainte-Marie, Steven Guilbeault, is expected to resign on Aug. 28. Continue…

As a massive merger of two U.S. railway giants goes before a federal regulator, Canada’s largest rail lines are now at odds over whether the deal should go ahead.

Until earlier this week, both Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. stood in opposition to Union Pacific Corp.’s proposed US$85-billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern Corp.

If approved, the proposal would create the United States’ first transcontinental railway, controlling about 40 per cent of the country’s freight traffic.

That joint front changed when CN agreed to drop its opposition in exchange for more access to Union Pacific’s network south of the border, particularly through several areas of the Midwest. A separate deal between the two companies, aimed at supporting freight movement between Canada and Mexico, was revealed at the same time.

Ukraine is looking to sign a 30-year strategic energy agreement with Canada and proposing an “energy security bridge” focused on the supply of Canadian LNG, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

The proposal, which Shmyhal discussed with Canadian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, follows agreements reached by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Shmyhal said in a post on X.

As part of the talks, the two sides discussed the possibility of direct grant support from Canada worth $650 million to help Ukraine buy gas for the coming winter as part of Ottawa’s broader aid package. Ukraine has faced repeated Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure through successive winters of the war, now well into its fifth year.

Zelenskyy this month overhauled his government and said preparations for winter were a key reason driving the change. Sergii Koretskyi, chief executive officer of state-run energy company NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy, was named as prime minister, replacing Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Ukraine’s power and heating infrastructure remain vulnerable to Russian ballistic-missile strikes and low supplies of interceptors.

Ukraine also invited Canadian suppliers to store gas in its underground facilities and sought supplies of energy equipment from Canadian manufacturers, Shmyhal said. The ministers also discussed cooperation on small modular reactors, or SMRs, an area Kyiv wants to fold into the proposed long-term agreement as it looks to Canada’s experience in the technology.

New permanent residents down 20% in Canada. Nearly half the drop came from India

Canada admitted 20 per cent fewer permanent residents in the first three months of this year, with study permits and asylum claims also falling.

The country took in 83,130 permanent residents between January and March, down from 104,320 over the same three months in 2025, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada data analyzed by the Association for Canadian Studies. It is the second consecutive year admissions have fallen. New study permits dropped 24 per cent and asylum claims fell 35 per cent over the same period.

Jack Jedwab, president of the Association for Canadian Studies, said in an email the pattern is not a quarterly fluctuation. “Canada has moved from rapid immigration expansion to a deliberate, government-driven contraction,” he said.

Nearly half that reduction in permanent residents came from a single country. The number of Indian citizens granted permanent residence fell to 21,565 from 31,690, a drop of 10,125 people that accounts for 48 per cent of the entire national decline. New study permits for Indian students fell 42 per cent, and India made up 55 per cent of the national drop in study permits.

“When the government sharply reduces a stream in which one country is disproportionately represented, that country inevitably absorbs a disproportionate share of the cut,” Jedwab said. Continue…

Canada's only operational submarine just sank a U.S. warship

RCMP urged to reopen Flight PS752 criminal probe after records reveal Trudeau meeting

The RCMP is facing renewed calls to reopen its criminal investigation into the 2020 downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 after newly released records suggested the probe was shelved days after then-prime minister Justin Trudeau held a private meeting with Iran's foreign minister.

According to documents first reported by Blacklock's Reporter, Ontario businessman Shahin Moghaddam, who lost his wife and 10-year-old son in the attack, says Canadians deserve answers and believes the Mounties should launch a full criminal investigation into the deaths of the 138 Canadian citizens and permanent residents killed when Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps shot down the passenger jet shortly after takeoff from Tehran on Jan. 8, 2020.

"The RCMP must open the case even if it takes years to collect the clues," Moghaddam said. "They must start an investigation. They cannot ignore it."

Moghaddam said he has never understood why Canadian authorities failed to pursue their own criminal investigation into the attack.

"It is the duty of the Canadian government to look out for its citizens, any Canadian," he said. "It doesn't matter how or when."

Internal RCMP records now made public show investigators initially believed an independent Canadian criminal investigation was essential.

"The RCMP's expertise in obtaining information to an evidentiary standard could allow the Canadian government to provide victims' families with a factual sequence of events to explain the crash of PS752," investigators wrote.

"It is therefore imperative to determine what actually occurred, independently from open source reporting and the Iranian narrative."

The documents said an investigation conducted to Canadian evidentiary standards would help establish "individual or systemic culpability" and provide Canadians with confidence about what took place.

However, that planned investigation was abandoned less than two weeks after Trudeau met privately with then-Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif during the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 14, 2020. Iranian state television later broadcast footage of the meeting, which had not been publicly disclosed to Canadian media.

Twelve days later, on Feb. 26, the RCMP informed Canadian diplomats by email that it would not proceed with a domestic criminal investigation.

"The RCMP will not be launching a formal domestic investigation into the downing of PS752," the email stated. "The decision was taken based on advice provided by the Department of Public Safety and considerable internal work and discussions."

Moghaddam questioned the timing of the decision.

"Somebody gave them an order to stop right after Trudeau met with Iran's foreign minister," he said. "The Prime Minister was smiling and bowing. It is strange."

The records were obtained through a review conducted by the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency, which declined to comment on the case.

"All investigations by the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency must be held in private," the agency said in a statement. "As such NSIRA is not in a position to comment."

For Moghaddam, the passage of time has not diminished the need for accountability.

He said the RCMP still has an obligation to investigate the deaths of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, regardless of how long it takes.

"They must start an investigation," he said. "They cannot ignore it."

He notes the U.S. wanted strict control over Canada’s free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries. What Carney fails to note is that this exists already, right now in the USMCA [Article 32:10 of the USMCA]. The U.S. has termination rights to both Canada and Mexico FTAs with other countries.This is an example of Carney gaslighting Canadians.

In reality, Canada wants unlimited and unrestricted access to the U.S. market as if they were a 51st state. However, Canada will not permit unlimited and unrestricted access to their market for U.S. companies. This, Carney says, compromises the sovereignty of Canada. WATCH:

Canada’s West Coast Ports Eye Bigger Role as Trade Shifts Beyond U.S.

Canada’s largest West Coast ports are positioning themselves for a bigger role in the country’s push to diversify trade away from the United States, with a new study highlighting the scale of cargo already moving through British Columbia’s Pacific gateways.

The ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Nanaimo handled a record 200 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2025 valued at $409 billion, according to an economic impact study released Wednesday.

Together, the ports moved nearly $270 billion of Canada’s trade with overseas partners, representing almost half of the country’s trade outside North America.

The findings come as Canada looks to double exports to non-U.S. markets over the next decade, putting greater emphasis on Pacific trade routes and access to fast-growing Indo-Pacific economies.

“West coast ports like Vancouver have an outsized role to play as Canada looks to double exports to non-U.S. markets over the next 10 years in support of a thriving national economy,” said Peter Xotta, president and CEO of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The three ports move a broad mix of Canadian exports, including energy products, grain, potash, forestry products and critical minerals, alongside containerized cargo and imports ranging from vehicles and manufacturing components to consumer goods.

Their location gives Canada direct access to Indo-Pacific markets that are projected to account for half of global GDP by 2040, while rail and highway connections link the ports with producers and consumers across the country.

Vancouver, Canada’s largest port, operates across 29 major deep-water terminals handling containers, autos, bulk and breakbulk cargo. The port is also preparing for the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project, which would add significant container capacity on Canada’s West Coast.

Prince Rupert, meanwhile, has about $3 billion in projects underway as it expands its role as a northern Pacific gateway.

Port of Prince Rupert President and CEO Kurt Slocombe pointed to several projects intended to increase capacity and diversify cargo flows, including the CANXPORT and LinX logistics developments, the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility and additional marine berth and rail infrastructure.

“The Port of Prince Rupert will continue to be a key gateway to support Canada’s goal of doubling non-US exports,” Slocombe said.

Nanaimo is also seeking a larger role in Canada’s Pacific trade network. Located about 30 nautical miles from Vancouver, the port operates three deep-water terminals serving container, auto, bulk, breakbulk, cruise and logistics operations.

“As Canada looks to strengthen its trade corridors and expand access to global markets, strategic investments in infrastructure, industrial development and transportation connectivity will be essential,” said Nanaimo Port Authority President and CEO Ian Marr.

The report also underscored the broader economic footprint of the three gateways and their associated supply chains.

Together, they supported an estimated 152,100 jobs across Canada in 2025, including about 61,000 direct jobs ranging from longshore workers and train engineers to truck drivers and administrative staff. Those jobs generated about $13 billion in annual wages and contributed nearly $25 billion to Canadian GDP.

The study comes as Canada’s trading relationship with the United States faces renewed uncertainty, adding urgency to Ottawa’s longstanding effort to expand trade with markets beyond its largest trading partner.

Canada and the United States had been negotiating a broader trade agreement this summer, but talks were suspended last week after the two governments failed to bridge remaining differences. The breakdown has been followed by another round of tariffs and planned Canadian retaliation, further highlighting Canada’s exposure to the U.S. market.

For Canada’s West Coast ports, that push could translate into considerably more cargo moving across Pacific trade lanes.

“Canada’s West Coast ports are a strategic national asset, connecting Canadian businesses to global markets and supporting thousands of family-sustaining jobs,” said Mike Leonard, president and CEO of the BC Maritime Employers Association. “As global trade evolves, a stable, reliable waterfront and resilient national supply chains will be essential to unlocking new economic growth, diversifying trade and keeping Canada competitive.”

I dug into Power Corporation of Canada and found it holds $3.6 trillion in pensions, life insurance and mutual funds. The Desmarais family controls 52% of the voting power through the Desmarais Family Trust.

Their China connection dates back to 1978 when Pierre Elliott Trudeau sent Paul Desmarais to pitch trade to Beijing. That trip birthed the Canada-China Business Council, which the Desmarais family chaired for 48 years.

In 1986 Power Corp entered a joint-venture with state-owned CITIC, a Chinese government company. Today IGM Financial, owned by Power Corp, holds about 28% of China AMC, an asset manager valued at 3 trillion RMB (~$600 billion) and controlled by CITIC.

On Jan 7 2024 Jean Chrétien met Chinese government officials with André, France and Olivier Desmarais at the table with him.

Nine days later Mark Carney sat with Xi Jinping and a Canada-China Business Council gala, chaired by Olivier, announced a new strategic partnership.

The pattern repeats: prime ministers, finance ministers and campaign chiefs sat on Power Corp boards, sold companies to Desmarais, then ran Canada's China policy.

The numbers don't lie - $3.6 trillion, 52% vote, 28% China AMC stake, 48 years of influence.

Three whales rescued from Marineland have died

NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA (WKBW) — Three of the whales rescued from Marineland have died.

According to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, a 23-year-old beluga died on Tuesday night due to dehydration. Then two more died on Wednesday night.

7 News has reached out to the aquarium. They said they are unsure if these deaths are related.

"These losses are hard, made more difficult by the fact that it will take time to get concrete answers about what led to their passings," a Shedd spokesperson said. "What remains clear is why the rescue was necessary: 30 belugas urgently needed help and had nowhere else to go. Shedd and accredited partners were asked to step in. Helping these animals in need is part of Shedd’s responsibility, and our commitment to these whales and their second chance remains unchanged. We appreciate the outpouring of support from so many others who are equally committed to animal welfare."

In September 2024, Marineland closed, but many animals never left, including 30 beluga whales.

After months of worries about euthanasia, a plan was finally approved by the Canadian Government to rehome them at aquariums across the US.

Sapporo to move some beer production from Canada to US after tariffs

Japanese brewer Sapporo says it will move some beer production from Canada to the US after new tariffs on Canadian beer took effect on Tuesday.

The move follows the introduction of a 50% tariff on beer imported from Canada. For companies shipping beer across the border, that means significantly higher costs.

Chief strategy officer Rieko Shofu described tariffs as "something out of our control," telling Bloomberg that the beer giant would "move ahead with local production."

Sapporo did not immediately respond to the BBC's request for comment. The company plans to shift production of its non-alcoholic beer, currently made in Canada for US customers, to the US by the first half of 2027.

The US is one of Sapporo's most important overseas markets, and any shift south of the border will directly affect operations at its Canadian subsidiary, Sleeman Breweries.

To mitigate rising costs, the Japanese brewer is considering adding production capacity on the US West Coast. Options include building or buying a brewery, or partnering with a third-party manufacturer.

Sapporo has been building its presence in the US for years and says its flagship Sapporo brand is the country's best-selling Asian beer brand.

The company is also investing heavily outside Japan where a shrinking population has weighed on alcohol sales.

Sapporo plans to invest up to ¥400bn ($2.6bn) by 2030 as it seeks to expand overseas and boost profits. Around 30% of the capital is earmarked for overseas markets.

The brewer is also looking beyond North America. In July, it announced a partnership with Danish brewer Carlsberg to expand in Southeast Asia.

Sapporo's decision to move production comes as companies adapt to a growing number of tariffs worldwide.

In July, the US announced new tariffs on dozens of trading partners, including Canada, raising costs for businesses that rely on cross-border supply chains.

The move highlights how some companies are reconsidering where they make goods as trade barriers increase the cost of serving customers from overseas.

Goldman, Rystad See Room for $120 Oil if U.S.-Iran Conflict Continues

As commodity traders adapt to a forecast of prolonged uncertainty and disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices are rising again - and analysts and Goldman see room to grow. Daab Struyven, who co-chairs commodities research at the investment bank, told Bloomberg TV on Monday that there could be a "meaningful upside to crude oil prices," which are already at their highest level in six weeks.

As of Monday, Brent futures were trading in the range of $97, up $10 from levels seen early last month. Despite concerted efforts by the GCC states and the United States to reinstate large-scale oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, traders remain cautious, especially after the exchange of fire over the weekend.

"Events over the last few days do suggest that the risk of shipping disruptions broadening and intensifying is an important one," Struyven said, adding that he sees room for Brent to run as high as $120 per barrel.

Iran says that a deal with Oman on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz could be released within days, but it has always conditioned such an arrangement on U.S. compliance with Iranian demands - first and foremost, a lifting of the naval blockade and sanctions regime on Iranian oil exports. Any technical agreement with the Omani government on partitioning control of the strait would take effect only after resolving the standoff with the Trump administration.

Jorge Leon, head of geopolitical analysis at Rystad, said that oil price fluctuations are very much driven by market expectations of tanker transit volume through the Strait of Hormuz. Rystad assesses that the U.S.-led effort recently averaged eight million barrels per day through the strait, but says that traffic has now come down sharply to about 4-5 million barrels per day.

In a worst-case scenario, if this situation persists for several months and there is no sign of a diplomatic agreement between the U.S. and Iran, Rystad sees potential room for Brent to reach $120, Leon confirmed.

A pending Omani-Iranian deal on joint management of the Strait of Hormuz could potentially make things worse, he cautioned. "What I'm more worried about is that this deal will probably enact fees through the Strait of Hormuz, and I doubt the U.S. will allow for that," he told Bloomberg. "It increases the risk for more escalation."

Iran's decision to announce an expanded "restricted zone" in the Gulf of Oman adds further pressure on shipping interests, increasing the risk that a vessel might end up on Tehran's blacklist of vessels targeted for attack. Coming soon, according to Iran Supreme National Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei, any ship that passes the U.S. Navy blockade line at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman could be blacklisted. This creates new ambiguity for shipowners about whether they can safely operate west of the line, even far away from the strait. The policy appears aimed at the STS transfer areas off Fujairah, where the covert "shuttle" tankers that run GCC oil around the strait hand off their cargo to foreign-flag tankers. If Iran could deter or attack this link in the shipping chain, it would materially slow the movement of Gulf crude to global markets.

CALGARY, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The Canadian energy sector has proposed several major oil pipeline projects in the last decade, but only the Trans Mountain expansion project was completed.

Here, a look at three other pipelines that never came to be:

Energy East - A proposed C$15.7-billion project (US$11.0 billion), Energy East would have carried oil cross-country from Alberta to the Atlantic province of New Brunswick. It was cancelled in 2017 by TC Energy in the face of regulatory hurdles and opposition from environmental groups, particularly in Quebec.

Northern Gateway - This pipeline was proposed by Enbridge in 2006 to carry oil from Alberta to British Columbia's northwest coast. The C$7.9-billion project (US$5.5 billion) faced opposition from local and Indigenous communities who feared the risk of a marine spill. The project died in 2016 after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government cancelled its permits.

Keystone XL - This proposed TC Energy project would have carried oil from the oilsands of northern Alberta to the major U.S. crude storage hub at Cushing, Oklahoma and then on to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The project was rejected on environmental grounds by former U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, then revived during President Donald Trump's first administration. Former President Joe Biden revoked the pipeline's permit on his first day in office in 2021.

TC Energy spun off its oil pipeline business in October last year into a new company named South Bow Energy (SOBO.TO), opens new tab Trump said on Monday he wanted the pipeline built, but South Bow said it had moved on.

TC Energy has sought to recover more than US$15 billion from the U.S. government for cancellation of the project.
