"She asked if I was OK, and I said I was," Soren told me. She asked him who his mom was, and he told her my name. Then he got a little nervous — he didn't feel like he should be talking to her — and just walked away. I guess that, at some point, she called the police.

I didn't fuss at Soren for walking to the Dollar General because I think that's fine. I fussed at him for not letting me know that he was going when leaving the property. It was a communication thing. He apologized, and we moved on with the afternoon.

I was arrested

Around 6:30 p.m., the deputy sheriff and another officer knocked on our door.

I opened the door and held my finger up, asking if they could give me a moment to end my phone call with my client. "You need to step outside now," the deputy said. They asked me to turn around and put my hands behind my back. Soren was sitting right there watching this whole thing.

They said that I was under arrest on a charge of reckless conduct and took my phone.

At the station, they fingerprinted me. They stripped me down and made me change clothes into an orange jumpsuit. They scanned my body and took my mug shot.

I was only in there for an hour and a half. My mom and sister paid $500 for me to be released on bail, and I was back home by 8:30 p.m.

On Halloween, a case manager from the Division of Family and Children Services visited our home and spoke to the kids, my mom, my sister-in-law, and my dad.

I was asked to sign a safety plan

The next day, I contacted David DeLugas, the founder of ParentsUSA, a nonprofit that often provides pro bono legal support to parents wrongly accused of child neglect.

The case manager texted me on November 5 because she wanted to stop by to go over a so-called safety plan. It required me to delegate a "safety person" — presumably my mom — to be a "knowing participant and guardian" and watch over the children when I wasn't there. Under her supervision, I also needed to download a tracking app onto Soren's phone so I could monitor his location.

DeLugas, an attorney, explained the pros and cons of me signing — or not signing — the safety plan.

I decided that it was better not to sign it. I knew the potential risk — that the deputies could push the issue and maybe even try to have my children removed from my home — so it's scary.

But I feel it's more important to stand up for what we believe in. My kids are all supportive of that decision because we've talked about everything that's been going on. We know the maximum punishment could be a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail. DeLugas is helping us dispute the charges.

Meanwhile, friends and family have said they're concerned because they sometimes leave their kids alone at home or their kids go out for walks like Soren. They wonder now if they'll have cops show up because of it.

None of us wants the government telling us how to raise our children.

Migrants Racing to Cross US Border Before Trump Presidency

Human smugglers in Central and South America reportedly are encouraging migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.

Soon after taking office, Trump is expected to take action to secure the southern border and limit the number of migrants entering the country.

Among the anticipated moves by the second Trump administration is halting the use of a Biden administration app that allows people to apply for U.S. asylum while in Mexico and then cross legally when they have an appointment.

Smugglers are using online tools, such as WhatsApp, to tell migrants they need to move now if they want to enter the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reported.

"There were four WhatsApp groups in which hundreds of migrants coordinated their departure on U.S. election day. As soon as Trump's victory became clear, messages spreading fear began to appear," Luis Villagrán, a Mexican migrant advocate, told the Journal.

The New York Post reported Thursday that an average of 300 migrants were crossing into Eagle Pass, Texas, every day and officials were preparing for the possibility of "mass" crossings before Trump takes office.

"People know the window is going to close, so I think the crap is going to hit the fan in December and January," one Border Patrol source told the Post.

The source added that agents were getting "hit hard" by smugglers bringing migrants across on dirt bikes.

"We're waiting to get those last-minute groups getting across the border before Trump gets in. It's picking up already," another border official said.

At least 80% of illegal migrants hire smugglers, according to a 2023 report by the Department of Homeland Security.

Migrant smuggling has generated an estimated $4 billion to $12 billion in annual revenue, joining drugs and extortion as a top income stream for Mexican cartels, The Washington Post reported.

After Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the Nov. 5 election, The New York Times reported migrants were weighing whether to make the trek to the U.S. because the president-elect has campaigned on implementing the largest deportation effort in American history.

The final report from the public inquiry investigating allegations of foreign meddling is coming later than expected.

In response to the 2023 United States banking crisis in March 2023 involving multiple failures of American banks, in 2023 the United States government took extraordinary measures to mitigate fallout across the banking sector.

On March 12, the Federal Reserve created the Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), an emergency lending program providing loans of up to one year in length to banks, savings associations, credit unions, and other eligible depository institutions that pledge U.S. Treasuries, agency debt and mortgage-backed securities, and other qualifying assets as collateral.

The "Bank Term Funding Program" was designed to provide liquidity to financial institutions, following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and other bank failures. It was also created to reduce the risks associated with unrealized losses in the U.S. banking system, which totaled over $600 billion at the time of the program's launch.

Funded through the Deposit Insurance Fund, the program offers loans of up to one year to eligible borrowers who pledge as collateral certain types of securities including U.S. Treasuries, agency debt, and mortgage-backed securities.

Financial Gurus are saying that the federal reserve bank, "pulled" over half of the available credit in the Bank Term Funding Program and this, they say, will have the effect of putting massive stress on banks.

According to these financial people, SOME banks won't be able to cover cash withdrawals. This is NOT because the banks don't have the funds, but because the bank's funds are locked-up in things like Treasury Notes. Little solace to a depositor who needs cash, now, or companies that need cash for things like payroll or inventory.

What is the repo market, and why does it matter?

First things first: what exactly is the repo market?

A repurchase agreement (repo) is a short-term secured loan: one party sells securities to another and agrees to repurchase those securities later at a higher price. The securities serve as collateral. The difference between the securities’ initial price and their repurchase price is the interest paid on the loan, known as the repo rate.

A reverse repurchase agreement (reverse repo) is the mirror of a repo transaction. In a reverse repo, one party purchases securities and agrees to sell them back for a positive return at a later date, often as soon as the next day. Most repos are overnight, though they can be longer.

The repo market is important for at least two reasons:

The repo market allows financial institutions that own lots of securities (e.g. banks, broker-dealers, hedge funds) to borrow cheaply and allows parties with lots of spare cash (e.g. money market mutual funds) to earn a small return on that cash without much risk, because securities, often U.S. Treasury securities, serve as collateral. Financial institutions do not want to hold cash because it is expensive—it doesn’t pay interest. For example, hedge funds hold a lot of assets but may need money to finance day-to-day trades, so they borrow from money market funds with lots of cash, which can earn a return without taking much risk.

The Federal Reserve uses repos and reverse repos to conduct monetary policy. When the Fed buys securities from a seller who agrees to repurchase them, it is injecting reserves into the financial system. Conversely, when the Fed sells securities with an agreement to repurchase, it is draining reserves from the system. Since the crisis, reverse repos have taken on new importance as a monetary policy tool. Reserves are the amount of cash banks hold – either currency in their vaults or on deposit at the Fed. The Fed sets a minimum level of reserves; anything over the minimum is called “excess reserves.” Banks can and often do lend excess reserves in the repo market.

What happened in the repo market in September 2019?

The repo rate spiked in mid-September 2019, rising to as high as 10 percent intra-day and, even then, financial institutions with excess cash refused to lend. This spike was unusual because the repo rate typically trades in line with the Federal Reserve’s benchmark federal funds rate at which banks lend reserves to each other overnight. The Fed’s target for the fed funds rate at the time was between 2 percent and 2.25 percent; volatility in the repo market pushed the effective federal funds rate above its target range to 2.30 percent.

These NoSQL options met our base requirements of high availability, horizontal scalability, no single point of failure, consistency and sharding transparently.” After thorough research, the team determined that CERN computing needed NoSQL performance to scale with their growing organization.

As part of its evaluation process, CERN conducted a series of performance tests. ScyllaDB’s throughput proved to be as much as 6X that of Apache Cassandra.
