Two dozen killed after election offices in Pakistan bombed twice the day before elections

At least 24 people were killed and more than two dozen others injured in bomb blasts at the election offices of a political party and an independent candidate in Pakistan on Wednesday, a day before parliamentary elections.

Provincial government spokesman Jan Achakzai said the first attack took place in Pashin, a district in Balochistan province. Officials said at least 14 people were killed in the attack and the injured were being taken to a nearby hospital, some of them in critical condition.

At least 10 people were killed in another bomb blast at the election office of politician Fazlur Rehman's Jamiat Ulema Islam party in Balochistan's Kila Saifullah town, according to Akhakzai and local officials.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Acting Interior Minister Gauhar Ijaz condemned the bombings.

The bomb blasts occurred despite thousands of police and paramilitary forces being deployed across Pakistan to ensure peace following the recent surge in terrorist attacks in the country, especially Balochistan.

The banned Balochistan Liberation Army has been behind several attacks on security forces in Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran. Last week, a separatist Balochistan Liberation Army group attacked security facilities in Balochistan's Mach district, killing six people.

Pakistan has struggled in recent years to control growing insurgency, especially in former Taliban strongholds. Militants have a presence in Balochistan and have targeted civilians in recent years.

The gas-rich Balochistan province, bordering Afghanistan and Iran, has been the site of a low-level insurgency by Baloch nationalists for more than 20 years. Baloch nationalists initially wanted a share in provincial resources, but later began a rebellion for independence.

The Pakistani Taliban and other terrorist groups also have a strong presence in the province.

HSBC Whistleblower Claims Billions in Fraudulent Loans made to Chinese Citizens to purchase homes in Canada

The publisher is a small Canadian anti-corruption web-zine, but they do appear to have the goods with a whistleblower who already tried to report this internally, and they have a lot of internal banking documents and records going back almost a full decade detailing money laundering, suspicious transfers, and fraudulent loans in the hottest real estate markets on the planet.

I’ve written several DD’s on some of the problems with Canada’s banks, Chinese entanglement, and real estate issues, but this somehow is so much worse and yet entirely expected than anything I’ve put out.

I highly recommend reading the whole thing, but here is a great highlight:

These wire transfers from China were routed into bank accounts of “multiple, unrelated individuals in Canada,” that served as “money mules” in byzantine networks involving Canada-based real estate developers, real estate agents, mortgage brokers and banks.

“The bank found out that one lady works in a casino part-time but got a $1.4 million mortgage showing over $300,000 annual income,” he said. “Plus she takes money as benefits from the government, for her two kids.”

In other examples, an HSBC mortgage client claimed to earn $700,000 annually for remote work in China, while simultaneously living in Canada and paying off a $10,000 student loan.

Another woman who owned homes in Aurora, Markham and Scarborough, worked part-time as a hairdresser while also claiming to earn $536,280 at a “Business Manager” job in Guangzhou.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s unlikely it was only the Canadian branches of global banks pulling these shenanigans, and if I wanted to put on a tinfoil hat and make wild, completely unfounded guesses with absolutely no evidence I’d wonder about regional banks near the Canadian border with large residential mortgage portfolio’s that are having trouble.

Wong speaks with UNRWA as reports emerge questioning Israel's claims its staff are involved with Hamas

Australia's foreign minister says she has spoken with the United Nations aid agency in Gaza as new reports emerge questioning Israel's claims that its staff were involved in the October 7 terrorist attacks.

Australia was one of a group of countries to suspend aid to UNRWA after Israel presented evidence to the UN that 12 of the Palestinian refugee agency's workers had links to Hamas or were involved in the attacks in southern Israel.

The agency responded to Israel's allegations by terminating the contracts of some staff members, as well as launching an internal investigation.

British news outlet Channel 4 claims to have seen the the dossier that Israel provided to the UN. The media outlet reported that it contained "no evidence" to back up the claims.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong was questioned whether she was aware of the report but did not directly answer.

However, she told reporters on Thursday she had spoken with UNRWA's commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini on Wednesday.

"We recognise the importance of that organisation," she said.

"I spoke with him about the various inquiries and investigations they are doing.

"We spoke about ensuring that donors such as Australia can have the confidence to ensure that the pause is lifted because this is important for the people of Gaza and the people of the Occupied Palestinian Territories more broadly."

Peter Wertheim, co-chief executive officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, this week told the ABC he hadn't seen the dossier but concerns with UNRWA extended to before the October 7 terror attacks.

UNRWA has warned in recent days that its "whole operation" will collapse unless countries including Australia reinstate funding.

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres last month issued a direct plea to Australia and the other countries that had paused funding.

"While I understand their concerns – I was myself horrified by these accusations — I strongly appeal to the governments that have suspended their contributions to, at least, guarantee the continuity of UNRWA's operations," he said.

"Any UN employee involved in acts of terror will be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution.

"The tens of thousands of men and women who work for UNRWA, many in some of the most dangerous situations for humanitarian workers, should not be penalised. The dire needs of the desperate populations they serve must be met."

The agency is a critical source of support for people in Gaza and provides education, health and aid services.

Greens say government 'extremely irresponsible' to pause funding

The Australian government allocated $20 million in aid money to UNRWA in the 2023-24 budget.

Mayor Adams and the City Council appealed to a higher court, and the case has been stuck in court ever since.

Meanwhile, President Biden is fast-tracking work authorizations for non-U.S. citizens, potentially giving them the right to vote if Mayor Adams succeeds in the appeal.

Mayor Adams has a chance at winning.

As of June 2023, more than a dozen communities across the U.S., including Washington, DC, and municipalities in California, Maryland, and Vermont, allow noncitizens to vote in local elections.

Vermont’s top court supported noncitizen voting in municipal elections despite restrictions in the state constitution.

In Connecticut, Democrats aim to amend the state’s constitution to permit noncitizens to vote in local elections.

In December, the Boston City Council approved a proposal allowing noncitizens with "legal status" to vote in local elections.

An adult with a confirmed case of measles has died in Leinster, the Health Service Executive has said.

The adult died in a hospital in the Dublin and Midlands health region.

It is the first confirmed measles case notified in Ireland this year, the HSE said.

Public health teams and the Measles National Incident Management Team (IMT) "are taking all necessary public health actions in relation to the case," a statement added.

The IMT was established in response to a recent spike in measles cases across the UK and Europe.

There were four measles cases reported in 2023, two in 2022, none in 2021 and five in 2020.

No deaths were reported in any of those years.

The HSE said it offers the MMR vaccine to protect against measles to all children and a catch-up option for those aged ten and under who may have missed out on a vaccination.

"The HSE will keep the public informed of further measures and, in the meantime, anyone with concerns should contact their GP," it said.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Breda Smyth said she is "very concerned" that Ireland is "at high risk" of a measles outbreak.

In a social media post, Prof Smyth said: "We need 95% of the population to be vaccinated in order to prevent measles infection from spreading.

"Unfortunately, the uptake rate for the MMR vaccine in Ireland has fallen below 90% nationally and, in some counties, the rate is as low as below 80%.

"Also, we know from recent studies that nearly 20% of males aged 18 or 19 years do not have immunity to measles.

"This is particularly concerning as currently we're seeing a rise in cases in the UK and across Europe.

"If you're considering travelling to these areas, I would strongly urge you to ensure that you and/or your child are protected.

"The MMR is a safe and very effective vaccine," Prof Smyth added.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children aged under one, pregnant women and the immunosuppressed.

The signs and symptoms include:

Cold-like symptoms such as aches and pains, a runny nose, sneezing and a cough

Sore red eyes that may be sensitive to light

A temperature of 38C or above, which may reach around 40C

Small greyish-white spots in the mouth

Loss of appetite

Tiredness, irritability and a general lack of energy

Rash, which usually appears on head and neck first, and spreads to the rest of the body

The HSE said the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a resurgence of measles cases in England, particularly in the West Midlands and London.

According to the HSE's Health Protection Surveillance Centre, most confirmed cases since 2020 reported recent travel to countries where outbreaks were ongoing.

Trump: Israel ‘literally owned Congress’ a decade ago, today it’s the opposite

Former US president Donald Trump claimed last week that Israel “literally owned Congress” until roughly a decade ago, whereas today, “it’s almost the opposite.”

He made the remarks in a radio interview with conservative talk show host Ari Hoffman.

“The biggest change I’ve seen in Congress is Israel literally owned Congress — you understand that — 10 years ago, 15 years ago. And it was so powerful. It was so powerful. And today it’s almost the opposite,” Trump said.
