As Chinese Purchases Of US Farmland Soar, It's Becoming Impossible To Track How Much It Owns

The topic of China's ownership of US farmlands is starting to boil over.

Six months after we reported that a "Bipartisan Bill Aims To Block Chinese Purchase Of US Farmland", more are starting to pay attention yet as even Bloomberg notes that America "is seeing more and more of its most fertile land snapped up by China and other foreign buyers" the big problem remains: it’s difficult to know just how much farmland China has bought due to problem with how the US tracks such data.

Here's what we do know: according to Department of Agriculture data foreign ownership and investment in US farmland, pastures and forests jumped to about 40 million acres in 2021, up 40% from 2016; but an analysis conducted by the US Government Accountability Office — a non-partisan watchdog that reports to Congress — found mistakes in the data, including the largest land holding linked with China being counted twice. Other challenges include the USDA’s reliance on foreigners self-reporting their activity.

As a result, foreign ownership of US cropland is drawing attention from Washington as concern rises about possible threats to food supply chains and other national security risks. And, as we reported last summer, lawmakers have called for a crackdown on sales of farmland to China and other nations.

“Without improving its internal processes, USDA cannot report reliable information to Congress or the public about where and how much US agricultural land is held by foreign persons,” the report said.

The GAO made six recommendations, including that the USDA share more timely and complete data with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US, an interagency panel led by the Treasury Department that reviews foreign business deals. And yet, with typical bureaucratic "speed", it is certain that none of these will be implemented for years, in the meantime allowing Chinese state and private oligarchs to keep snapping up fertile US farmland.

Judge Orders Release of ‘Newburgh Four’ After Evidence FBI ‘Manufactured’ Terror Plot

A judge granted the release of a man convicted in a post-9/11 terrorist sting after criticizing the FBI for using a “unsavory” confidential informant to fabricate a plot to bomb New York synagogues and shoot down National Guard aircraft.

United States District Judge Colleen McMahon granted James Cromitie, 58, compassionate release from prison on Friday, six months after she ordered the release of his three co-defendants, together known as the Newburgh Four for similar reasons, the Associated Press reported.

Four individuals from the riverside city an hour’s drive north of New York City were convicted of terrorism in 2010. Cromitie had completed 15 years of his 25-year minimum sentence. The New York-based court reduced Cromitie’s sentence to time served + 90 days.

According to Judge McMahon, Cromitie was a small-time “grifter” who was destitute and jobless when he was recruited into the FBI-led operation and supplied phony explosives to place in return for $250,000 in the “jihadist mission.” Cromitie assigned the other three guys to function as lookouts.

“The three men were recruited so that Cromitie could conspire with someone,” the judge said. “The real lead conspirator was the United States. …. The FBI invented the conspiracy; identified the targets; manufactured the ordnance.”

Cromitie’s attorney, Kerry Lawrence, said Saturday that he had not yet been able to contact his client, but that Cromitie’s family was thrilled.

Prosecutors in the high-profile case claimed the Newburgh defendants spent months studying areas and obtaining what they believed to be explosives and a surface-to-air missile with the intention of shooting down aircraft at the Air National Guard installation in Newburgh and bombing synagogues in the Bronx.

They were detained after reportedly placing “bombs” with inert explosives provided by the FBI.

Critics claim that federal investigators had entrapped a vulnerable group of men who had just served time in jail.

In a harsh decision, McMahon said that the FBI manufactured the plot and designated the targets.

The Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth took aim at those who suggest Israel has carried out "genocide" against Gaza, noting that the move is a "moral inversion" meant to rip open the lingering wound of the Holocaust, according to a piece written by the rabbi for the Telegraph.

Nazi Germany murdered approximately six million Jews during World War II.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis said the shaky allegation that the Jewish state was carrying out a genocide against the Palestinian people was the "ultimate demonisation of the Jewish state." He went on to say that using the term "genocide" was offensive to the victims and families of those who suffered through the Holocaust.

Mirvis continued by saying that there have been real genocides since the Holocaust, including those in Bosnia, Cambodia, Darfur, and Rwanda, according to the Telegraph.

Pro-Palestine activists have actively sought to undermine Israel's response to Hamas' violent attack against the Jewish state on October 7. Some 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered in a single day, and another 240 Israelis were abducted and taken into Gaza as hostages.

“It is a term deployed not only to eradicate any notion that Israel has a responsibility to protect its citizens, but also to tear open the still gaping wound of the Holocaust, knowing that it will inflict more pain than any other accusation,” Ephraim wrote in the piece.

“It is a moral inversion, which undermines the memory of the worst crimes in human history.”

Mirvis addressed the recent effort by the African National Congress government in South Africa to bring a case of genocide against the Jewish state to the International Criminal Court. The development comes as major bodies have come under pressure to condemn Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

“We have watched in horror as people have rushed to invoke the crime of genocide – some within days of Oct 7," Mirvis wrote. "Fringe academics and their partisan cheerleaders have selectively quoted Israeli politicians to paint a picture of a country bent on annihilation."

“The enthusiastic clamour by some to declare it as something which belongs in a different moral category to the many other just wars with horrific humanitarian consequences, represents a moral failure built upon a foundation of hatred and disinformation.”

The conflict in the Middle East has shaken institutions around the world, including the U.S., where many students and professors in major universities have condemned Israel for its response against Hamas.

UN condemns Ukrainian attack that killed 27 civilians in Russian city

Moscow has called the bombardment of a busy market in Donetsk a “barbaric terrorist act”

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the attack against the capital of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic,but refused to pin the blame for the shelling that left at least 27 civilians killed and over two dozen injured including several children.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemns all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including today’s shelling of the city of Donetsk in Ukraine,” the spokesperson for the UN chief said in a brief boilerplate statement on Sunday night.

“Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” it added.

The number of fatalities from the Ukrainian shelling of a busy market in Donetsk on Sunday has climbed to 27 people, according to the latest tally by the DPR head Denis Pushilin. Another 25 people were injured, some of them in a serious condition, including “penetrating wounds in the area of vital organs and traumatic amputation of limbs,” according to the official. Two children who were wounded in the bombardment have been described as being in moderate condition.

Moscow has called on governments and international bodies to condemn this “treacherous attack on the civilian population,”with Russia’s Foreign Ministry stating that failure to do so would be a sign of “silent approval of the murders of civilians” that would only encourage Kiev “to commit even more bloody atrocities.”

The shelling, which hit the Kirov District in the southwest of Donetsk,was carried out with the use of 152mm and NATO-standard 155mm munitions.

“This again confirms [the West’s] direct involvement in the conflict and makes it complicit in the criminal acts of the Zelensky regime, which has once again displayed its inhumanity and hatred towards innocent people,” the ministry added.

Ukraine is increasingly heading towards authoritarian rule under President Vladimir Zelensky and his administration, theMayor of Kiev Vitaly Klitschko told Canada’s Globe and Mailin an interview published on Friday. The government has largely consolidated its control over the national media, leaving almost no space for alternative viewpoints, and has started to replace elected local officials, he claimed.

Ukraine’s major TV broadcasters have been airing a single show known as the United News Telemarathon almost since the start of the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022. The program mostly consists of live news broadcasts, interviews, and talk shows. According to Klitschko,it has allowed the government to establish a “monopoly on information.” The mayor argued that the content of the show is “controlled” by the state and that any dissenting or critical voices are simply not allowed.

“Objective, true information is very important to society, and a monopoly on information, I guess, is not good,” he told the Globe and Mail. He also said that asignificant part of Ukrainian society “doesn’t understand exactly what happens on the front lines” since the show highlights Ukrainian military successes while downplaying the setbacks.

“We are worried that some government institutions were involved in that repression of free media,” Klitschko explained. He accused Zelensky of not paying attention to the issue of the persecution of journalists in Ukraine.

The list of Klitschko’s concerns does not end with the media, as, according to him, the government has alsoused martial law introduced to replace more than 200 mayorsand local council heads with military administrators.

“The mayors and the heads of community are elected by citizens, and they are instead being replaced by people who are put in from the top. So that’s why I worry,” the former world boxing champion-turned-politician said.

“The movement, what we see right now,I can’t say it’s democracy. It smells of … of authoritarianism,” Klitschko said, adding that “some people” within the government “wish everything to be centralized” and seek to consolidate power in their hands. He didn't name anyone specifically and alsostated that he “cannot say their names.”

Klitschko, a long-time national hero due to his high-profile boxing career, took up his position shortly after the 2014 Maidan coup and is one of the few prominent politicians from the time of Zelensky’s predecessor, Pyotr Poroshenko, who has retained a senior post.

Over the past months, relations between the capital’s mayor and the central government have been marred by multiple public spats. In June, Klitschko was reprimanded for the state of the city’s bomb shelters. In November, he was one of the first major Ukrainian public figures to admit the failure of the much-hyped summer counteroffensive. He also contradicted the stance taken by Zelensky at that time.

In early December 2023, Klitschko already warned that Zelensky had plunged the nation into authoritarianism and made it dependent on the “mood” of a single person – himself.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is “stressed out” and has been admitted to the hospital for panic attacks. That’s according to veteran Chicago journalists John Kass and Anita Padilla, who discussed Johnson’s panic attacks on an episode of WGN-AM’s Chicago Way Podcast.

“The mayor’s panic attacks? Can we talk about that?” Kass said. “No amount of anti-depressants can cure him of (Chicago’s illegal alien) problem.”

Padilla said Johnson has sought out professional medical help for stress.

“Two sources told me that he has been in the hospital for these panic attacks. He is stressed out,” Padilla said. “This is a big, big job for him. He’s not ready for it. He’s not a leader. I’m sorry. This immigration issue is not helping him at all."

A native of Waukegan, Padilla worked for NBC 5 (1997-2007) and Fox 32 (2007-2023). In Dec. 2023, she resigned to take a position with Florida Voice News.

Scores dead as frigid conditions ravage US – CBS

Weather-related fatalities have been reported in at least nine US states in recent days

At least 89 people have died in weather-related incidents across the United States in recent days, a report by CBS News said on Sunday, as dangerously cold conditions continue to impact various parts of the country.

Tens of millions of people across the US once again faced bitterly-cold conditions this weekend as a blast of frigid Arctic air traveled southwards from Canada, sending temperatures plummeting to record lows and blanketing sections of the country with thick layers of ice and snow.

How cold it is varies by region but in Chicago, for example, wind chills dropped the temperatures to -30 degrees Fahrenheit (-34 degrees Celsius). Elsewhere, in states like Texas, Alabama and Georgia, temperatures hovered in or around 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.6 degrees Celsius) last week.

Tennessee’s Department of Health has confirmed at least 25 fatalities associated with the weather conditions over the past several days, CBS said, while another 16 have died in various incidents in Oregon in the western US. This includes three people who were killed in the state when a tree fell on their car.

Oregon has declared a state of emergency after more than 45,000 people were left without power as a result of storms.

Deaths have also been reported in various other states, including Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, New York, New Jersey and more. Various other fatalities – including a person killed in a five-car crash in Kentucky – are being investigated to identify if the adverse weather conditions were the primary cause.

In the state of Mississippi, officials have told residents to be aware of hazardous conditions on the roads, and to “drive only if necessary.”

Bitterly cold, below average temperatures are expected to extend into the coming week, forecasters say. “Arctic air will combine with moisture from the Gulf to create an icy mess from Oklahoma to Illinois,” meteorologist Molly McCollum said. “Travel will be treacherous on Monday.”

The eastern half of the United States will likely see its coldest weather yet this season early in the week, with dangerous wind chills and a hard freeze warning – where temperatures stay at or below 29 degrees Fahrenheit (-1.6 degrees celsius) for an extended period of time – issued as far south as northern Florida.

There is some respite in sight, however, as temperatures are expected to rise by midweek – though, according to the Weather Channel, this could swiftly thaw ice and snow, leading to an increased risk of flooding in some areas.

So, it's funny coming from me, b/c I was a long time atheist then agnostic under the premise of, "can't disprove God, so, have to acknowledge the possibility) and then w/the 2020 election for some weird reason, just found myself KNOWING there is God.

Anyway, that personal bullsh*t aside, the premise of you question removes God from the equation.

Considering the moral issue(s) around the murder of convenience (aka abortion), and the profundity of life, I don't think it is reasonable to remove God from this equation. Therefore, by reinstating God into the equation, your assertion insinuates, if not flatly accuses, God of making a mistake.

God can do anything, but I don't think mistakes are his foray - unless, he is merely presenting the would be mother with a moral choice to test her free will. Even still, "mistake" doesn't seem to be the correct nomenclature.
