German ‘heavy brigade’ to deploy close to Russia’s border

Defense ministers from Berlin and Vilnius have signed a major military deployment plan

Germany and Lithuania on Monday signed a roadmap for what is set to become the largest deployment of German troops on foreign soil in the modern era. Under the plan, the 5,000-strong brigade will be stationed less than 20km (12 miles) from the border with Belarus, Moscow’s key ally.

Lithuania also shares a border with Russia’s westernmost exclave, Kaliningrad.

The agreement was sealed during German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’ visit to the Baltic nation, where he met with his Lithuanian counterpart, Arvydas Anusauskas. Berlin already leads a multinational NATO advance force stationed in the country and decided to boost its military presence last year.

Pistorius described the future deployment as a way for his nation to “assume leadership responsibility” within the US-led military bloc. Anusauskas pledged to ensure “the best possible conditions for German soldiers and their family members,” which Lithuania will be responsible for.

Germany plans to keep 4,800 troops and 200 civilian specialists in the country on a permanent basis, complete with heavy armaments and support structure. The relocation will start in the second quarter of 2024, with the brigade scheduled to reach full combat readiness by 2027, according to the German Defense Ministry.

Lithuania said most of the foreign troops will be stationed at the Rudninkai training ground in the southeast of the country, close to Belarus. The rest will be hosted by a military facility near the village of Rukla. Vilnius and Kaunas, the cities closest to the base, is where many of the family members of the Germans will be living, the country’s military said.

Lithuania has been developing military infrastructure near Rukla for years. The Enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroup Lithuania, as the NATO force deployed there is called, has been stationed there since 2017 in what the organization claimed to be a “consequence” of Crimea rejoining Russia after a referendum.

Moscow perceives the movement of NATO capabilities to the east of Europe as provocation and a threat to its national security.

The future German unit is called the heavy 42nd Armored Brigade by the Bundeswehr and will include three combat battalions. Two of them are German-only, and include an armored battalion and a heavy infantry battalion. The third one will be a multinational unit based on the currently deployed force.

Hannah Frisby, 29, is the alleged ringleader of this disturbing cult that combined elements of witchcraft, Satanism, and Vikingism—a form of Norse deity worship. Arrested alongside her are Caleb Frisby, 28; Justin Cowart, 26; James Owens; and Frisby’s uncle, Tommy Allen, 54.

The group was apprehended after a report to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office in September by the victim’s sister.

According to Myarklamiss, state that the victim, who suffers from both autism and ADHD, was lured into the group on the pretense of forging a polyamorous relationship, only to later be designated as a sex slave.

The victim recounted how she was coerced into renouncing her Christian faith to participate in the group’s arduous rituals.

An arrest affidavit indicates the victim was subjected to inhuman treatments such as being forced to bathe in scalding water while scrubbing with stiff bristled brushes covered in bleach to cleanse ‘evil spirits,’ amongst other things.

In a particularly harrowing episode, it is alleged that a puppy was presented as a “sacrifice to the Gods” in a gruesome intimidation act.

After being in the relationship for two weeks, the victim was punished by being forced to enter scolding hot water and scrub herself with stiff bristled brushes covered in bleach in front of residents in the home. According to court documents, the punishment was due to the victim’s self-harming.

The victim was allegedly forced to denounce her Christianity due to Hannah being Wiccan and practicing witchcraft, Caleb practicing satanism, and James practicing vikingism. The victim was allegedly abused and sexually assaulted by Hannah if she did not have sex with the “husbands.” Authorities learned that the victim suffers from autism and ADHD, which makes it easy for the victim to become confused. The victim was also allegedly abused by Hannah’s uncle, Tommy Allen.

On September 21, 2023, the victim invited her sister to the residence to visit. Once the sister arrived at the residence, she entered the home and the victim asked her sister, “How is Freddy?” Officials learned that the question is a safety code in the victim’s family if they are in trouble.

Despite significant backlash, it appears no exception will ultimately be made for the Reconciliation Monument in Arlington National Cemetery. Workers will remove the 109-year-old monument this week, providing revisionists in the nation's capital with a gift of absence just in time for Christmas.

What's the background?

The Reconciliation Monument, also called the Confederate Memorial, was approved in 1906 by Secretary of War William Taft; commissioned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1910; designed by Jewish former Confederate soldier Moses Jacob Ezekiel; and unveiled in Section 16 of the cemetery by President Woodrow Wilson on June 4, 1914.

The monument consists of a bronze female figure crowned with olive leaves atop a 32-foot pedestal. The female figure holds a laurel wreath, a pruning hook, and a plow. At her feet is a biblical inscription that reads, "They have beat their swords into plough-shares and their spears into pruning hooks."

Another inscription on the memorial states in Latin, "The victorious cause was pleasing to the gods, but the lost cause to Cato."

Thirty-two figures of mythical gods, Southern soldiers, and civilians are depicted around the base, including two black characters — one holding a baby and the other a slave following his owner to war. The memorial also displays 14 shields representing the 11 Confederate states and the border states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri.

The memorial was intended as a monument to reconciliation in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Union army veteran President William McKinley, who supported legislation in 1900 to establish a Confederate section in Arlington Cemetery, proclaimed four days after men from former Confederate states ensured America's victory against Spanish forces, "In the spirit of fraternity we should share with you in the care of the graves of Confederate soldiers. … Sectional feeling no longer holds back the love we feel for each other. The old flag again waves over us in peace with new glories."

The American Conservative underscored that it was long understood to be a reconciliation monument, such that "some Confederate groups at the time opposed the statue and memorial precisely because they opposed the reconciliation that it symbolized. At the memorial’s dedication in 1914, President Wilson praised it as an 'emblem of a reunited people.'"

Diplomatic Visit Cancelled After German Chancellor Tests Positive for Coronavirus

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Monday that he has tested positive for COVID-19, and the government said a visit by Slovakia’s new prime minister had to be canceled as a result.

“This cyberattack comes in response to the aggression of the Islamic Republic and its proxies in the region,” the group said in statements in Persian and English.

The group claimed to have gained access to the payment systems of the impacted gas stations, as well as each station’s central server and management system.

Since the start of Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, which began with a shock onslaught on October 7 in which Hamas terrorists massacred some 1,200 people in southern Israel and took around 240 hostages, Iranian-backed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen have stepped up attacks against Israel.

Iranian state media reported that close to 70% of the country’s gas stations were out of service, citing a “software problem” as the cause and urging people not to rush to the stations that were still operational.

Iranian state TV quoted a statement from the country’s Oil Ministry that said that more than 30% of gas stations remain in service. The country has some 33,000 gas stations.
