Religion vs. Spirituality

One clue that there's something fishy about this distinction comes when we look at the radically different ways people try to define and describe that distinction. Consider these three definitions drawn from the internet:

Religion is an institution established by man for various reasons. Exert control, instill morality, stroke egos, or whatever it does. Organized, structured religions all but remove god from the equation. You confess your sins to a clergy member, go to elaborate churches to worship, are told what to pray and when to pray it. All those factors remove you from god. Spirituality is born in a person and develops in the person. It may be kick started by a religion, or it may be kick started by a revelation. Spirituality extends to all facets of a person's life. Spirituality is chosen while religion is often times forced. Being spiritual to me is more important and better than being religious.

Religion can be anything that the person practicing it desires. Spirituality, on the other hand, is defined by God. Since religion is man defined, religion is a manifestation of the flesh. But spirituality, as defined by God, is a manifestation of His nature.

True spirituality is something that is found deep within oneself. It is your way of loving, accepting and relating to the world and people around you. It cannot be found in a church or by believing in a certain way.

These definitions aren't just different, they are incompatible! Two define spirituality in a way which makes it dependent upon the individual; it is something that develops in the person or is found deep within oneself. The other, however, defines spirituality as something which comes from God and is defined by God while religion is anything that the person desires. Is spirituality from God and religion from man, or is it the other way around? Why such divergent views?

Even worse, I've found the three above definitions copied onto numerous websites and blog posts in attempts to promote spirituality over religion. Those doing the copying ignore the source and disregard the fact that they are contradictory!

We can better understand why such incompatible definitions (each representative of how many, many others define the terms) appear by observing what unites them: the denigration of religion. Religion is bad. Religion is all about people controlling other people. Religion distances you from God and from the sacred. Spirituality, whatever it really is, is good. Spirituality is the true way to reach God and the sacred. Spirituality is the right thing to center your life on.

In fact they have no power over us at all.

And I realized suddenly that Posts ‘smell’ different to me. I know without thinking which are clown and which are anon and i bleep past the clown posts without a second look or even thinking about it. I simply scroll by and land directly on anon posts.

And this ‘smelling different’ goes beyond their visible markers and obvious identifiers.

Anon posts smell calm actually. It’s not just writing style. It’s not just rage text or rant that gives the faykers away. I can feel it coming off the screen.

A bunch of years ago I saw someone say something similar on another chan. That they could tell fren from foe without even thinking about it. I mocked that kind of crazy and now I do it.

The frenz today really stand out from the manifest-foes. And in my realization I want to make sure I say hello to frenz. I see you. We’re here. And it’s a dang comfy thing to be. Bless you frenz. I am so happy to be here.

Exclusive: Steve Bannon Furious With Congress Over 'Handcuffing' Trump

Right-wing media personality and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is furious with Congress over "handcuffing" former President Donald Trump if he were to win reelection in 2024, Bannon told Newsweek.

The House passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the 2024 fiscal year on Thursday. The defense act was already passed by the Senate on Wednesday night and is expected to be signed into law by President Joe Biden. The $886 billion bill lays out the budget and policy for the Pentagon in the coming fiscal year.

Included in the NDAA is aprovision that bars the U.S. president from withdrawing the country from NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) without approval from the Senate or an act of Congress.

Bannon told Newsweek via phone on Friday that the provision is "handcuffing Trump on NATO" if the GOP front-runner were to regain the presidency.

"That should be a major concern to everybody in the United States," Bannon said. When Trump was president, he repeatedly threatened to pull the U.S. out of NATO.

Trump has long seen NATO as a waste of U.S. resources. In his 2000 book titled The America We Deserve, Trump wrote that Europe's "conflicts are not worth American lives. Pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually."

According to Trump's campaign website, as president, he would continue to scrutinize NATO. "We have to finish the process we began under my administration offundamentally re-evaluating NATO's purpose and NATO's mission," the website says.

Bannon insisted that the NDAAprovision is "totally unconstitutional."

"The Constitution has very strict provisions for what has to happen to have a treaty approved. Right. It doesn't say anything abouthow a treaty is not approved and leaves it to the commander in chief," Bannon argued.

However, who holds the power to pull out of treaties is debatable. In Thomas Jefferson's A Manual of Parliamentary Practice for the Use of the Senate of the United States, printed in 1801, the Founding Father and America's third president wrote: "Treaties being declared, equally with the laws of the United States, to be the supreme law of the land, it is understood thatan act of the legislature alone can declare them infringed and rescinded."

Bannon criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, for suspending the rules to get the NDAA passed. "We support him right now, but he's beyond on thin ice," Bannon warned.

Bannon was not only upset over the NATO provision, but that the final bill did not include amendments that Republicans added to a version of the bill passed by the House over the summer. The amendments were aimed at blocking the Pentagon's abortion policy and its funding of gender-affirming surgery.

Newsweek also reached out to Johnson via email for comment on Friday.
