Russia warns Britain over cruise missiles

Moscow has said itreserves the right to take any measures deemed necessary to “neutralize a threat” posed by the British-made weapons

London’s decision to supply Kiev with long-range cruise missiles isanother step towards a “serious escalation” of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. The ministry branded the move as “a very unfriendly step” on the UK’s part, which proves London’s “unprecedented level of involvement” in the conflict.

“Carried away with geopolitical games… the UK is apparently ready to cross any red lines and bring the conflict towards a totally new level when it comes to destruction and casualties,” the ministry’s statement read.

Russia “reserves the right to take any measures deemed necessary to neutralize a threat that may arise from Ukraine’s use of the British cruise missiles,” the ministry said, adding thatthose behind this “reckless step”and London’s “destructive activities” in general would be to blame for the consequences.

On Thursday, the UK confirmed it was handing several of its Storm Shadow cruise missiles over to Ukraine. The weapons can hit targets over 250km (155 miles) away. British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace claimed it was a “calibrated and proportionate response” by London to the situation in Ukraine.

Washington then indicated on Friday that it was reluctant to follow London’s example. The US has long refused to provide Kiev with longer-range weapons like the ATACMS missiles. In March, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said it was not an option since the move would dwindle the Pentagon’s own stocks.

Some Western officials have reportedly suggested that giving Ukraine the option to attack targets inside Russian territory, which is recognized as such by the US and its allies, would be a major escalation of the conflict.

Kiev has long asked for such longer-range weapons. President Vladimir Zelensky’s top adviser,Mikhail Podoliak, said this week that longer-range missiles could be used to strike Crimea, which Kiev considers an illegally occupied territory. The peninsula joined Russia back in 2014 following a referendum.

Moscow has repeatedly warned Western nations that continued weapons deliveries to Ukraine make them de facto participants of the conflict – something many of them have vehemently denied.

On Thursday, theKremlin vowed to have an “appropriate answer” to the deliveries of the British missiles.

FBI Searches NASA Scientist's Home in Missing Student Case

A NASA scientist's home has been searched by the FBI in relation to a missing-person case from the 1990s, with nearly a dozen bags of evidence removed from the house.

The house in Redwood City, California, belongs to Thomas Pressburger, who is a computer scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center.

"Basically, we took a look back into the case and opened up the cold-case investigation and that's why we're out here today," Lt. Peter Lotti, a spokesperson for the Belmont Police Department, said in a video posted by local broadcaster KTVU. "And really our ultimate goal is to bring closure to the case."

The search was carried out on Wednesday at the house and in a nearby park, reopening the cold case of the disappearance of Ylva Hagner, who went missing in October 1996, then aged 42.

Hagner, a Swedish national, worked at a software company and attended the Stanford Continuing Studies program. She was last seen at work in Belmont—5 miles north of Redwood City—on October 14, 1996.

Her car was found in San Carlos four days later with the keys in the ignition, but she could not be located, and her disappearance was considered suspicious. San Carlos is situated between Belmont and Redwood City.

"We have nothing to show that she was kidnapped, we can't find any signs of a struggle or anything like that, so all we can say at this point is it's a disappearance under extremely suspicious circumstances," said Belmont Police Department Commander Larry Riche in 1996.

Now, however, Belmont police, the FBI, and the San Mateo County Sheriff's office have all been involved in the search of Pressburger's house.

According to a report in the Chronicle Peninsula Bureau at the time, Pressburger was Hagner's boyfriend during that period, and had been questioned by police during the initial investigation.

ABC7 reported that the police were specifically interested in a brick patio in the backyard of the home, initially removing bricks and scanning the ground. Police then brought in excavation equipment and dug up that section of the yard.

"Hopefully they find something and figure it out," Annie Norgaard, a neighbor, told ABC7. "The Nextdoor app was buzzing all day. It is usually quiet here but of course we saw all the police and helicopters here today."

Belmont police told ABC7 that the search of the property was now complete, and that they were planning to release new information in the coming days.

Borrell outlines EU’s issues with China

Brussels and Beijing are “rivals” that have a “problem of values,” the EU’stop diplomathas said

The EU has two major “strategic security issues” with China, which are the situation around the self-governing island of Taiwan and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the bloc’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said on Friday.

“We cannot have normal relations with China if China does not use the strong influence that China has on Russia in order to stop this war,”he told journalists in Stockholm. The EU and US, however, were quick to dismiss the twelve-point peace plan proposed by Beijing earlier this year, questioning China’s authority as a mediator.

Borrell described China as a partner, but also as a competitor, emphasizing its status as a “rival” of the EU. Brussels and Beijing represent two “very different” competing systems engaged in a global “battle of narratives,” and a “battle of offers” to the world, he said.

“Our systems – our political and economic systems – are different, completely different. We are multi-party democracies; they are a single party. We are market economies, the Chinese economy is being driven by the State, so we are very different,” Borrell told journalists.

“We are rivals, because we present our models to the rest of the world,” he added.

Borrelladvised against any attempts to prevent China from becoming a world power, arguing that it is simply impossible. Instead, he encouraged Brussels to “engage” Beijing while striving to “reduce dependence” on China. Earlier, he also suggested trying to influence China’s policies on the world stage.

“The important thing is not to prevent China from becoming a world powerbut to manage how it uses this power,” he told the European Defense and Security Summit in Brussels on Thursday. “If it uses this power in accordance with international law, if it doesn’t put in danger our interests and values, we have to live with China on the world stage,” he added. (These guys don’t even adhere to international law)

Borrell reportedly struck an even harsher tone in an internal paper that was supposedly distributed among the bloc’s foreign ministers ahead of the Friday meeting.

There, the EU top diplomat called on the member states todevelop a “coherent strategy” to tackle Beijing’s global ambitionsamid a “hardening of the US-China competition,” according to the Financial Times (FT), which saw the document.

“China’s ambition is clearly to build a new world order with China in its center,” Borrell reportedly warned, calling the issue of China “much more complex” than the situation with Russia.

His words came amid the EU’s alleged plans to punish Beijing for its trade with Moscow. Earlier this week, FT reported that Brussels might target seven Chinese firms as part of its new sanctions package.

Eliane Karp, spouse of ex-Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, catches flight from US to Tel Aviv to avoid money laundering case in Lima; countries have no extradition treaty

Eliane Karp, Peru’s former Jewish first lady, has flown from the United States to Israel in an attempt to avoid extradition to Peru in a money laundering case.

Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otárola announced the news on Wednesday at a press conference in Lima.

“The United States Department of Justice has informed the Peruvian embassy in the US that Mrs. Eliane Karp has taken a flight to Israel using her Israeli passport,” he said.

Peru does not have an extradition treaty with Israel.

Karp was first lady of Peru from 2001 to 2006. Born to Jewish parents in France, she is an anthropologist who met her husband, former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, while the two were students at Stanford University. Before getting her PhD from the California university, Karp got her bachelor’s degree at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

In April, Toledo was extradited from the United States to Lima, where he is now in prison. He is accused of accepting tens of millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for public works contracts. Toledo denies all wrongdoing.

Peruvian authorities also attempted to extradite Karp from the United States for a separate embezzlement case involving Karp, her mother and her husband.

In 2013, a Peruvian prosecutor discovered that Ecoteva Consulting Group, an offshore company in Costa Rica founded by Toledo, was used to pay the mortgages of expensive real estate for Karp’s mother, Eva Fernenburg. Initially, Toledo claimed the money from this company came from reparations paid by Germany to Fernenburg, a Holocaust survivor. Later he said that the money came from Israeli businessman Yossi Maiman.

Prosecutors believe that money used to create Ecoteva came from bribes and are therefore seeking a sentence of 16 years and eight months for both Toledo and Karp. On April 20, a California judge ordered the return of Karp’s passport.

While first lady, Karp was known for her ability to speak Quechua, one of the indigenous languages of Peru, and for her tendency to explosively call out those who disagreed with her. In 2004, at an event at the Israeli embassy in Lima, Karp began yelling at a Israeli-Peruvian media tycoon (in Hebrew and Spanish) whose TV channel had criticized her.

She later apologized to the Israeli ambassador.
