Beloved Los Angeles 'peacemaker' bishop fatally shot

A Los Angeles County bishop was found dead of a gunshot wound Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing a law enforcement source.

Auxiliary Bishop David O'Connell, 69, served as a priest and later a bishop for more than 45 years. He was found dead in his home in Hacienda Heights, California Saturday afternoon. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

"It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness," Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez said in a statement Saturday.

Gomez described Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell as a "peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant."

"Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer. . .he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected."

Gomez added that O'Connell was a "good friend" whom he will miss greatly.

"May Our Lady of Guadalupe wrap him in the mantle of her love, and may the angels lead him into paradise, and may he rest in peace," the Archbishop's statement concluded.

"Homicide detectives are calling [David O'Connell's] death suspicious," KCAL reported live from the scene Saturday evening, where mourners had gathered to pray the rosary, light candles, and offer their respects.

The clergyman was found dead in a room in his home just after 1 p.m. local time, KCAL reported.

"He was a very good soul. . . very loving, caring," Hacienda Heights resident Glendy Perez, one of the mourners outside O'Connell's home, told the outlet. "We can't even imagine something like this would happen to him."

"When I first heard the news today, I was absolutely devastated and brokenhearted," Janice Hahn told KCAL. Supervisor Hahn serves on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

"Bishop David was so well known because of his love for people [and] his interest in all the causes that really lifted up the poor in Los Angeles County," Hahn added.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives responded to a shooting death investigation at the 1500 block of Janlu Avenue in Hacienda Heights Saturday afternoon, according to a Nixle alert, which the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department tweeted.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the alert. The suspect is unknown.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau encourages anyone with information about the incident to contact them at (323) 890-5500. Alternatively, those who wish to remain anonymous can report via "Crime Stoppers" at (800) 222-TIPS or use the "P3 Tips" mobile app.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that the Biden administration should declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.

Graham said, “Number one, there are 30 United States senators in Munich along with a big House delegation. Senator McConnell and Schumer both came. Virtually unanimous belief that we should be training Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 today so they can get the jets as soon as possible. The British are training Ukrainian pilots. I believe a decision will be imminent here when we get back to Washington that the administration will start training Ukrainian pilots on the F-16. They need that weapons system, and let me just stress this. How can you call this war by Russia a crime against humanity, and that’s what the vice president did in Munich, and we’re talking about Germany. We’re talking about the vice president of the United States declaring that Russia is involved in crimes against humanity in Germany of all places, you know, echoes of World War II. How can she say that, and she is correct, and not give the victim of the crime against humanity the defensive weapons they need to stop the crime?”

He added, “So we need to do two things quickly. Make Russia a state sponsor of terrorism under U.S. law, which would make it harder for China to give weapons to Russia, and we need to start training Ukrainian pilots on the F-16 now.”

Millions of gallons of untreated sewage from Mexico spilling into San Diego, forcing beach closures

San Diego is contending with millions of gallons of raw sewage that are flowing into the city from Mexico via a pair of canyons on the border.

The sewage spill began when a construction crew accidentally ruptured a significant pipeline near Tijuana, forcing the closure of several pump stations that send sewage away from the border toward the coastline. This caused wastewater to escape from the collection system and drain into natural channels such as the canyons and the Tijuana River.

As a result of the contamination, San Diego has been forced to close some of its beaches. The county of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health currently lists several major closures in connection with the sewage spill. The Imperial Beach and Silver Strand shorelines are currently closed because the bacteria levels there exceed health standards, and residents are being advised to avoid contact with the water in this area. Several other shorelines in the area are open but under an advisory related to the presence of bacteria.

Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre has said that her top priority is cleaning up pollution that flows into the area from Tijuana, saying: “I’ve said it 1,000 times, but I’ll keep saying it until it’s fixed: It’s an environmental injustice.”

The current spill is largely concentrated in Smuggler’s Gulch and Goat Canyon, where concrete capture basins are serving to redirect at least some of the flow toward an international wastewater treatment plant situated on the border. The South Bay wastewater facility normally treats around 25 million gallons of sewage per day but has been taking on an extra 10 million gallons each day to try to stem the impact of the spill.

The Area Operations Manager in San Diego for the American section of the International Boundary and Water Commission, Morgan Rogers, noted: “We can sustain this, but it is adding wear and tear on our plant.”

Rogers added that Mexican officials hope to build a temporary bypass pipe that can be used to restore the flow of sewage to their wastewater plant, but that will take several days.

It is expected to take at least another week to fix the broken pipe, but experts warn that this will not fully address the pollution that comes from the aging San Antonio de Los Buenos wastewater plant in Punta Bandera, which is situated 6 miles south of the border near Tijuana.

Estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that the treatment plant sends roughly 35 million gallons of raw sewage per day into the Pacific Ocean. This waste often floats up the coast, leading to beach closures.

No easy solutions

The EPA has a $630 million plan to deal with sewage pollution flowing in from Mexico that includes expanding the international wastewater treatment plant in San Diego. Projects related to this plan could get underway within the next three years. However, the agency warns that it will be impossible to fully stop the flood of urban runoff that is caused by heavy rains, and Tijuana needs to make significant investments in improving its infrastructure.

San Diego has been dealing with untreated sewage leaking over the border from Tijuana since at least the 1930s. Although some advancements were made in reducing the problem during the 1990s, Tijuana’s plumbing is struggling to keep up with the city’s population growth.

In August, U.S. officials had to loan equipment to Mexico when a crucial set of sewer pipes situated at the top of a canyon that drains into San Diego broke in half. Like the current incident, the cause of the problem on that occasion was human error. Only one of those pipes has been fixed, which means that the bulk of Tijuana’s sewage diversion from the U.S. relies on that single pipe remaining functional.

UN Security Council drops vote calling on Israel to cease settlement activity

The US voiced deep dismay at Israel's decision to expand settlements but also described a push for the UN to denounce the move as "unhelpful."

The United Arab Emirates told the UN Security Council that it will not call a vote on Monday on a draft resolution demanding Israel "immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory," according to a note seen by Reuters.

The UAE told council counterparts in the note sent on Sunday that it will now work on drafting a formal statement - known as a presidential statement (PRST) - which the 15-member council has to agree by consensus.

Pfizer enrolled 44,000 people across 270 clinical sites in the phase 3 clinical trials for the Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine. Yesterday, Welt reporter Elke Bodderas published a report shedding further light on what appear to be systematic efforts to cover up or reclassify adverse events among trial participants.

The centrepiece of their reporting is patient number 12312982, a 36 year-old Buenos Aires resident named Augusto Roux, who participated in the vaccine arm of the trial and experienced significant adverse reactions following both doses of the vaccine. His most severe symptoms followed the second jab; they included shortness of breath, nausea, fever and darkened urine, and required hospitalisation. Throughout both sets of reactions, he tested negative for Covid. A trial doctor judged his symptoms very likely to be an adverse reaction to vaccination, and there are compelling reasons to think he suffered pericarditis. Roux promptly dropped out of the trial, and his lawyers succeeded in gaining access to internal Pfizer records his case. These reveal that Buenos Aires researchers recorded Roux as testing positive for Covid following dose 1, despite multiple negative PCR tests. To cover for his September hospitalisation, meanwhile, they listed him as suffering from a “severe anxiety attack.”

Welt finds other irregularities in data from the the Argentine clinical site as well. Following the first dose at the end of August, they removed 53 trial participants; internal documents give nothing but vague, contradictory excuses for the purge. Following the second dose, Buenos Aires researchers removed a further 200 participants – two-thirds of all removals across the entire trial.

Irregularities appear to extend beyond the shady Buenos Aires operation. As a friend notes on Twitter, the fact that there were more deaths in the vaccine than the placebo arm of the Pfizer trial has always been considered an awkward coincidence by the fact checkers. Upon closer examination, though, it begins to look like deaths from severe vaccine injuries were actually what put the vaccine arm over the top:

WELT has documents showing that patient No. 11621327 was found dead in his home three days after the second dose, apparently a stroke. Patient No. 11521497 died 20 days after vaccination, diagnosed with cardiac arrest. “According to the current understandings, these two cases would be attributed to vaccination,” says Berlin-based pharmaceutical specialist Susanne Wagner, “especially since the US health authority CDC is currently investigating strokes in vaccinated people and it is known that blood clots can trigger sudden deaths following vaccination.”

In response to Welt inquiries, Pfizer responded that “Regulatory authorities around the world have approved our Covid-19 vaccine. These approvals are based on a robust and independent assessment of the scientific data on quality, safety, and efficacy, including the phase 3 clinical trial.” Thomas Mertens, head of the German vaccine regulator STIKO, demanded clarification from Pfizer, while the Berlin Charité immunologist Andreas Radbruch suggested the pharmaceutical should be sanctioned to preserve faith in vaccination and trust in regulators.

The scars that have been left on all of us by the response to COVID are incomprehensibly varied and deep. For most, there hasn’t been enough time to mentally process the significance of the initial lockdowns, let alone the years-long slog of mandates, terror, propaganda, social stigmatization and censorship that followed. And this psychological trauma affects us in myriad ways that leave us wondering what it is about life that just feels so off versus how it felt in 2019.

For those who were following the real data, the statistics were always horrifying. Trillions of dollars rapidly transferred from the world’s poorest to the richest. Hundreds of millions hungry. Countless years of educational attainment lost. An entire generation of children and adolescents robbed of some of their brightest years. A mental health crisis affecting more than a quarter of the population. Drug overdoses. Hospital abuse. Elder abuse. Domestic abuse. Millions of excess deaths among young people which couldn’t be attributed to the virus.

But underneath these statistics lie billions of individual human stories, each unique in its details and perspectives. These individual stories and anecdotes are only just beginning to surface, and I believe that hearing them is a vital step in processing everything that we’ve experienced over the past three years.

I recently sent out a query on Twitter as to how people had been affected by the response to COVID at an individual level. The conversation that emerged is a luminating and haunting reflection of what each of us experienced over the past three years. Below is a tiny selection of the responses that I found especially powerful.

Specifically, the query was: “Which aspect of the response to COVID affected you most at a personal level?”

Mark Trent: “Watching the last remnants of my belief in democracy get peeled away. Seeing the collusion across the globe roll out in lockstep made me realise just how powerful and comprehensively in control those that orchestrate the darkness are.”

Which response affected me most?

Near the beginning January. Barely a breakout. But magically all governments in unison have what I perceived to be a panic response. Their actions, in unison, screamed at me, "warning will rogers, bioweapon level panic".
