World Economic Forum Lists ‘Misinformation’ As A Top Risk Threatening The World

The World Economic Forum (WEF) names “misinformation” as one of the most severe threats facing the world in 2023, according to an annual report.

“Misinformation” is ranked 16th, or moderately severe, on a list of the 32 risks having the most impact over a two year period, the 2023 WEF Global Risks Report, which displays the results of a survey of over 1,200 experts across multiple fields, shows. The ranking aligns with the WEF’s accelerated efforts in recent years to address a perceived damage “misinformation” spreading online does to the health of societies.

“‘Misinformation and disinformation’ are, together, a potential accelerant to the erosion of social cohesion as well as a consequence” and can worsen growing polarization and disunity among societies, the report states.

Political polarization, exacerbated by online information, in turn becomes the defining feature of elections and can contribute to the degradation of democracy in a country, the report said.

Misinformation and disinformation have “become a prominent tool for geopolitical agents to propagate extremist beliefs and sway elections through social media echo chambers” by fostering doubt about political processes, the report stated. Online lies and misleading content can also “destabilize trust in information.”

“The election of less-centrist leaders and adoption of more ‘extreme’ policies in economic superpowers may fracture alliances, limit global collaboration and lead to a more volatile dynamic,” the report said.

“Misinformation and disinformation” itself was ranked more severe than employment crises, infectious diseases and use of weapons of mass destruction.

Mis- and disinformation are defined in the report as “persistent false information … widely spread through social media networks” that influences public opinion “towards distrust in facts and authority.”

“Global risk” is defined as “the possibility of the occurrence of an event or condition which, if it occurs, would negatively impact a significant proportion of global [gross domestic product], population or natural resources,” according to the methodology for the Global Risks Perception Survey upon which the WEF report is based.

Russia’s Seaborne Oil Exports Surge Despite Sanctions

By Julian Lee (Bloomberg) Russia’s seaborne crude exports soared last week to the highest level since April, suggesting that the country has — for now — overcome an initial hit to flows that followed European sanctions.

Aggregate volumes of Russian crude rose by 876,000 barrels a day, or 30%, to 3.8 million in the week to Jan. 13. Baltic shipments were up by 626,000 barrels a day from the previous week, while those from the Black Sea and the country’s Pacific ports also expanded.

The increase also lifted the country’s four-week average, which smooths out peaks and troughs in what are noisy weekly data. The jump in the four-week average was boosted as a mid-December, weather-related slump that saw weekly flows collapse by more than half fell out of the calculation. And the surge in exports by sea has been partly offset by a drop in pipeline flows to Europe, with deliveries to Germany halted since the start of the year.

Inflows to the Kremlin’s war-chest from crude export duties rose much less sharply. All of the shipments in the latest week attracted duty at the low January rate, while several cargoes that were shipped the previous week were taxed at the December rate, which was more than two-and-a-half times as high. That was due in part to a change in the formula used to calculate duty rates, as the country continues its long shift away from taxing exports by increasing the burden on production.

The data are highly volatile, depending on the timings of when individual shipments depart and things like weather conditions and work at ports.

European-owned tankers can still carry Russian crude, as long as it is sold at a price below a $60 a barrel cap, introduced at the same time as the import ban. But fewer are now doing so.

There has also been a resurgence in ship-to-ship transfers of cargoes in the Mediterranean, with cargoes either being combined onto larger vessels or shifted from ice-class tankers onto others in order to free up those ships needed for operations in the Baltic in the winter months.

Transfers have been visible both off the Spanish north African city of Ceuta and off the Greek coast near Kalamata. The VLCC Lauren II has completed the transfer of three 100,000-ton cargoes at Ceuta and the Sao Paulo took two before heading through the Suez Canal. Lauren II is now heading around Africa to Asia. The VLCC Monica S completed a similar maneuver with an aframax off Ceuta on Jan. 14-15, becoming the third supertanker to do an STS of Urals at the site over the past month.

Elsewhere, shuttle tankers that haul Russia’s Sokol crude are waiting much longer than usual to transfer cargoes to other ships off the South Korean port of Yeosu, reducing the number of cargoes they are able to lift each month.

Tankers hauling Russian crude are becoming more cagey about their final destinations. Vessels carrying more than 29 million barrels of Russian crude, the equivalent of 1.05 million barrels a day of exports, left port showing no clear final destination in the four weeks to Jan. 13.

When the Cosa Nostra boss Salvatore “Totò” Riina was arrested in 1993, after 23 years on the most wanted list, he was living comfortably in Palermo with his wife and four children. Thirteen years later, his sidekick, living like an ascetic, eating cheese and chicory and reading his Bible in a shepherd’s hut near his birthplace, Corleone, was run to ground.

For years, only one of Riina’s inner circle, responsible for a campaign of violence that left hundreds dead including judges, priests and politicians, remained at large. A man known for his wealth and his love of fast cars, who had numerous girlfriends and liked the finer things in life, he nonetheless managed to hide from investigators without going far from home.

The man who once boasted “I filled a cemetery by myself” evaded the police because he still commanded loyalty from the people living in his territory, the town of Castelvetrano and the wider province of Trapani. Hundreds of police had been engaged in the search over the years with no success. A series of arrests of people close to him, including his sister Patrizia, raised hopes that the net was closing, but none of them would talk.

“If you asked, where is Matteo Messina Denaro, people would say, he’s either dead, or he’s in the province of Trapani,” said Giacomo di Girolamo, author of a biography of Denaro called The Invisible. “He wasn’t one of those mafiosi who would go abroad, to Brazil, or northern Europe. He didn’t need to build himself a bunker like the heads of the ‘Ndrangheta in Calabria. He was protected in his territory.”

Investigators described him as combining the qualities of the old and new mafia. “Like the old mafiosi, he sees the mafia as a superior state, involving a select few who are worthy of the honour,” Teresa Principato, a former magistrate and a member of the Direzione Nationale Antimafia (DNA) who was on his trail for decades, said in 2014. “He allows in only those who are close to him. But he is also modern … He is a greedy, ruthless, money-maker who will get involved in any business that makes a profit – and his methods work.”

Denaro’s status within the organisation has long been the subject of speculation. He was Riina’s golden boy, close to the ferocious Graviano brothers from Brancaccio, a suburb of Palermo. “If anything happens to me,” Riina reportedly said, “Matteo and Giuseppe [Graviano] know everything.” After the arrest of the big beasts, the central decision-making commission of Cosa Nostra tried to appoint a new head, but each time investigators were listening in and managed to pounce.

Although his father, Ciccio, was a capo of the old school, it was said that Denaro, known as U Siccu (“Skinny”), did not have the qualities to be a traditional boss. He was too showy, and his obsession with gaming did not impress (another nickname was Diabolik, after a comic book character).

“He became part of the Corleone group, but he was a very modern boss in some ways,” says Di Girolamo. “He was not married, but he had a child with his partner. That would have been unthinkable for an old-style mafia boss. Also, while the old bosses were attached to the rites and trappings of religion, he professed himself to be agnostic, if not atheist.”

The mafia has always been adept at changing with the times, and Denaro’s enduring strength was his connection with the “grey zone” where organised crime coexists with politics and business. As the mafia expert John Dickie puts it in his book Mafia Republic, the grey zone is “an area of society where complicity with the bosses is hard to detect, and where the partnership between the bosses and the businessmen, or between the gun and the laptop, is by no means always tilted in favour of the former”.

His immense wealth came from his investments in energy and refuse, successfully infiltrating local government to get control of important building contracts. Three years ago a windfarm entrepreneur was arrested for bankrolling Denaro. While the mafia’s business dealings are largely in the legitimate sphere, they are still backed by the threat of violence.

A top Italian Mafia boss who once bragged he could “fill a cemetery” with his victims was busted by police after 30 years on the lam Monday.

Matteo Messina Denaro, a convicted organized crime leader and Italy’s top fugitive, was picked up at a private clinic in Palermo, where he was receiving undisclosed medical treatment, paramilitary police said.

The 60-year-old was still considered to be the top Sicilian Costra Nostra figure, running his Trapani-based operation even while in hiding for the last three decades, officials said.

He was the last of three longtime fugitive top-level Mafia bosses who had eluded capture for decades.

Messina Denaro had been convicted of dozens of murders in absentia and faces multiple life sentences — including for two 1992 Sicily bombings that killed anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

The captured billionaire boss was also convicted of killing a turncoat associate’s young son, who was strangled and dissolved in a vat of acid.

His capture came 30 years and a day after the capture of his mentor, convicted “boss of bosses” Salvatore “Toto” Riina, in a Palermo apartment after 23 years on the run.

In retaliation for Riina’s arrest, Denaro and his bloodthirsty crew “put bombs in Milan, Rome and Florence. They blew up national monuments and a museum,” Cyprien d’Haese, co-director of a new episode of Netflix’s “World’s Most Wanted,” told The Post in 2020.

“It was their way of saying, ‘We are so powerful. We can get anyone anywhere.’”

Denaro’s father — a high-ranking mafioso — had handed him over to Riina for a bloody apprenticeship that began around his 18th birthday. Denaro quickly established himself as a reliable foot soldier with a penchant for murder.

“Riina loved him,” said d’Haese. “Denaro was told to kill and he killed.”

Messina Denaro was taken to a secret location by police immediately after the arrest, Italian state television reported.

An American startup firm has admitted to releasing reactive particles into the atmosphere in an attempt to alter the climate. The move has attracted widespread criticism, and marks a potentially dangerous new stage in the intensifying response to Earth’s “climate crisis”.

Just before Christmas 2022, the firm ‘Make Sunsets’ acknowledged it had launched weather balloons containing sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. The launches took place in April 2022, in Baja California, Mexico, months before the company was even incorporated.

When quizzed about it, the company’s CEO, Luke Iseman, was unrepentant. “It’s morally wrong, in my opinion, for us not to be doing this”, he said, adding that it’s important “to do this as quickly and safely as we can,” because of the threat of man-made climate change.

Critics, including geoengineers, say Make Sunset’s efforts are dangerous, not only because the field is very much in its infancy, but also because they could have wildly different effects from those intended.

“The current state of science is not good enough… to either reject, or to accept, let alone implement” solar geoengineering, said Janos Pasztor, executive director of the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative, which seeks to impose restrictions on geoengineering projects. “To go ahead with implementation at this stage is a very bad idea.” .

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will travel to Europe next week for a five-day trip to promote the state's recent economic developments and with hopes of attracting new businesses in the automotive and clean energy industries.

The Democratic governor will travel to Norway first before heading to Switzerland to speak at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos next week to speak on a panel to discuss “The Return of Manufacturing." She will be a part of a bipartisan group of governors in Davos that includes Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“We are taking this opportunity to tell Michigan’s story around the world with leaders and decisionmakers in other countries," Whitmer said in a press release Wednesday. “We’re building something in Michigan that everyone should want to be a part of.”

The Federal Reserve Banks have extended $6.3 billion to the Swiss National Bank through the Dollar Liquidity Swap line.

That’s after swapping $3.1 billion last week, with Credit Suisse announcing shortly after last Friday that they will buy back up to 3 billion Swiss francs ($3 billion) of debt after credit default swaps skyrocketed for the bank.

Those concerns have now eased, with Goldman Sachs stating on Tuesday that Credit Suisse faces a capital shortfall of as much as 8 billion Swiss francs ($8 billion) in 2024.

They argue that at the minimum they need $4 billion to restructure their investment banking.

Jefferies analyst Flora Bocahut also said in a note on Tuesday that Credit Suisse needs to build about 9 billion Swiss francs of capital in the next two-to-three years.

The stock price of Credit Suisse has plunged, down 56% since November 2021. So they might not want to raise capital through equity considering the very low price.

Their bond yields spiked, making it very expensive to borrow through bond markets.

Borrowing from their central bank however may make sense. The swap line is at 3.33% interest, just above the base rate of 3.25%, and coincidentally is in combination about as much as Credit Suisse needs.

The Swiss bank therefore may have been bailed out, with its stock up 2.5% in the past five days.

Police go unpunished after pepper-spraying and arresting photographers at anti-lockdown protest

Victoria Police say internal investigations into the pepper-spraying and arrests of photographers at an anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne in 2021 have finished and no disciplinary action will be taken against the officers involved.

Police confirmed the officer who drenched Age photographer Luis Ascui in oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray was not reprimanded and was cleared of misconduct by the integrity unit despite the force paying a settlement to Ascui after he filed a lawsuit.

Ascui was covering a protest in Richmond on September 18, 2021, when – after protesters broke through a police line – he took photos of an officer pepper-spraying a demonstrator lying on the ground before being sprayed himself.

The protest also resulted in 10 officers being injured and six being taken to hospital, while 235 demonstrators were arrested.

There has also been no disciplining of officers after two other photographers, Jay Kogler and Michael Currie, were doused with pepper spray, arrested and subsequently released without charge during the same rally in September 2021.
