GirlsDoPorn operator admits videos were part of sex-trafficking conspiracy

Matthew Isaac Wolfe pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court, shown above, to one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking in connection with 15 victims of the GirlsDoPorn empire.

The operator of the GirlsDoPorn empire, which coerced young women into filming adult videos that were widely released online, pleaded guilty in San Diego federal court Tuesday to a single count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

Matthew Isaac Wolfe, 40, admitted to his role in the broad scheme that recruited numerous women under false pretenses for pornography. His responsibilities included running the day-to-day operations of the websites, managing the finances, marketing the content and serving as cameraman for about 100 videos.

The conspiracy count to which Wolfe pleaded guilty pertains to 15 victims, all adults.

Three other co-defendants have already pleaded guilty in the case, while the remaining defendant, GirlsDoPorn owner Michael James Pratt, 39, remains a fugitive.

At the time, the defendants were embroiled in a lawsuit in San Diego County Superior Court filed by 22 women who were victimized by the conspiracy. The judge in that case ultimately found in favor of the women and handed down a $12.7-million judgment against Pratt, Wolfe and adult performer Ruben Andre Garcia.

Howard Lipin  U-T A San Diego State student needed medical attention after attending an event at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house. Campus officials said Monday that he died.

Beginning in 2012, the women and at least one minor were recruited first as models to come to San Diego, then pressured to have sex on camera with a porn actor in posh hotel rooms and short-term rentals around the county, according to federal prosecutors and evidence presented in the civil case.

The women were told the videos wouldn’t be made public but would go to private DVD collections overseas, they testified. Instead, the videos were widely disseminated on the GirlsDoPorn network of sites and beyond.

Wolfe admitted he was aware that the names and social media accounts for some women were posted on another website controlled by Pratt, resulting in severe harassment of the women by internet trolls. Still, Wolfe and others continued to assure recruits that their videos, and identifies, would remain secret.

Victims said they were plied with alcohol and marijuana before being rushed through signing a contract, which they were not allowed to read or obtain copies of. Some said they were sexually assaulted and held in the hotel rooms unwillingly until filming had ended. Wolfe admitted in the plea agreement that some of the women were threatened if they asked to stop.

Wolfe faces a sentence of up to life in prison. However, as part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said they would recommend a term in the midrange of the sentencing guidelines, not above 12 years and six months.

Prosecutors recommended roughly the same prison term for Garcia, the actor, when he was sentenced in June 2021 after pleading guilty to a sex-trafficking conspiracy. U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino gave him 20 years.

Administrative assistant Valerie Moser and videographer Theodore Gyi, who have also pleaded guilty, are awaiting sentencing on similar conspiracy charges. A woman who had been accused of posing as a fake reference model to help coerce the women was charged initially, but her case was dismissed.

Pratt, a New Zealand citizen, went missing during the civil trial and is believed to have fled the country. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to his arrest.

The FBI said Pratt has ties to multiple countries — including New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Singapore, Japan, Chile, Croatia and France — and “has the financial means to be anywhere around the world.”

“We know there are people that are helping Pratt,” San Diego FBI Special Agent William McNamara said.

Chinese molten-salt reactor cleared for start up

In January 2011, CAS launched a CNY3 billion (USD444 million) R&D programme on liquid fluoride thorium reactors (LFTRs), known there as the thorium-breeding molten-salt reactor (Th-MSR or TMSR), and claimed to have the world's largest national effort on it, hoping to obtain full intellectual property rights on the technology. This is also known as the fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR). The TMSR Centre at SINAP at Jiading, Shanghai, is responsible.

Construction of the 2 MWt TMSR-LF1 reactor began in September 2018 and was reportedly completed in August 2021. The prototype was scheduled to be completed in 2024, but work was accelerated.

"According to the relevant provisions of the Nuclear Safety Law of the People's Republic of China and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Safety Supervision and Administration of Civilian Nuclear Facilities, our bureau has conducted a technical review of the application documents you submitted, and believes that your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor commissioning plan (Version V1.3) is acceptable and is hereby approved," the Ministry of Ecology and Environment told SINAP on 2 August.

It added: "During the commissioning process of your 2 MWt liquid fuel thorium-based molten salt experimental reactor, you should strictly implement this plan to ensure the effectiveness of the implementation of the plan and ensure the safety and quality of debugging. If any major abnormality occurs during the commissioning process, it should be reported to our bureau and the Northwest Nuclear and Radiation Safety Supervision Station in time."

The TMSR-LF1 will use fuel enriched to under 20% U-235, have a thorium inventory of about 50 kg and conversion ratio of about 0.1. A fertile blanket of lithium-beryllium fluoride (FLiBe) with 99.95% Li-7 will be used, and fuel as UF4.

The project is expected to start on a batch basis with some online refuelling and removal of gaseous fission products, but discharging all fuel salt after 5-8 years for reprocessing and separation of fission products and minor actinides for storage. It will proceed to a continuous process of recycling salt, uranium and thorium, with online separation of fission products and minor actinides. The reactor will work up from about 20% thorium fission to about 80%.

If the TMSR-LF1 proves successful, China plans to build a reactor with a capacity of 373 MWt by 2030.

As this type of reactor does not require water for cooling, it will be able to operate in desert regions. The Chinese government has plans to build more across the sparsely populated deserts and plains of western China, complementing wind and solar plants and reducing China's reliance on coal-fired power stations. The reactor may also be built outside China in Belt and Road Initiative nations.

The liquid fuel design is descended from the 1960s Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the USA.

Charging electric vehicles in Britain soon will be more expensive than filling up gasoline-powered cars thanks to soaring electricity costs — an economic switcheroo that could be a harbinger of shrinking financial benefits for Americans who go green.

British energy regulators told electricity consumers to expect to pay 80% more beginning Oct. 1. The national price cap on residential electricity will send the average bill from about $190 per month to an estimated $343 per month, or more than $4,000 per year.

The shocking price hike stems from the nation’s limited reserves and Russia’s cutoff of one of the region’s major sources of electricity generation: natural gas. British energy prices eclipsed those of many other Europeans because the nation lacks domestic energy storage and production of natural gas, nuclear and renewables, making it more reliant on imports.

Kenny Stein, policy director of the Institute for Energy Research, warned that the financial hardship in Europe from rising energy prices is an omen for Americans if the U.S. transitions from fossil fuels to renewables faster than the supply can handle.

“For the U.S., this actually gets to an underlying fallacy of a lot of people that are pushing electric vehicles: They assert electric vehicles are cheaper because they assume electricity prices are going to stay cheap,” Mr. Stein said. “You’re combining the increased demands on electricity. That means you’ve got to build a new generation.”

The U.S. is making a major pivot toward electric vehicles. President Biden’s climate spending law is pumping billions of dollars into the production of EVs and providing tax credits to people who buy them.

California last week announced a phaseout of the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles beginning in 2026. The deadline to end sales of new gasoline-powered cars is 2035. Many other Democratic-run states are expected to follow California’s lead.

British electricity prices will nearly double from about 33 cents per kilowatt-hour to 60 cents per kilowatt-hour, making electric vehicles cost more before and after owners drive them off the lot. The average electricity cost in the U.S. is less than 11 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to the Energy Information Administration.

With British electricity prices climbing and gasoline at roughly $7.40 per gallon, the owner of a $40,000 electric Kia Niro would spend more than $100 more to travel 400 miles than the owner of a $26,000 gas-powered Kia Sportage, according to an analysis by the Royal Automobile Club, the British equivalent of the AAA.

A $71,000 Jaguar I-PACE would cost nearly $115 more to go 400 miles than its gas-powered equivalent, the $52,000 Jaguar F-PACE.

London-based Electrifying.com has a slightly rosier outlook. It estimates that the average electric vehicle user now saves 27% on fuel, less than 75% a year ago. With the higher electricity prices, an electric Volkswagen ID.3 crossover that travels 10,000 miles per year will save $34 per month on fuel compared with the gas-powered VW Golf of a similar size.

The price jump of electricity will make the hardest impact on drivers who use public charging stations and pay higher energy taxes. Those who travel long distances or do not have access to an at-home charger will bear more of the burden. Electricity prices at public charging stations are cruising to almost 81 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Mr. Stein said the U.S. is in a much better position than Britain to weather fluctuating electricity costs because of its more robust production of the oil and natural gas used for power generation.

The average electricity cost in California is one of the highest in the country at 18 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to EIA data from 2020, the most recent year available. Although California’s cost is almost 70% higher than the national average of 10.59 cents per kilowatt-hour, it is about one-third of the new British price.

Rising U.S. natural gas prices have increased electricity costs. In July, Americans’ electricity bills climbed to their highest levels since 2008 and were nearly 90% higher than the same time last year.

Natural gas is trading above $9 per million British thermal units. The price a year ago was about $3.50.

School Supports Teen's Decision To Identify As A Cat & Allows Her To Be Non-Verbal In Class

A school in Australia has allowed one of its students to be non-verbal in class and behave like a cat, as per her wishes.

The unnamed teenage girl, who is in Year 8, is reportedly allowed to act like a feline and be non-verbal at the private school in Melbourne, as long as it does not become a distraction to the other classmates.

The teen identifies as a cat and wants to be treated as such.

According to the Herald Sun, the school, which has called the girl "phenomenally bright," has stated that some of their students have displayed a range of identity and mental health issues.

“Our approach is always unique to the student and we will take into account professional advice and the wellbeing of the student,” the school's statement read, adding that they consult with professional advice as well as listen to the well-being of their students.

An insider close to the girl’s family also told Herald Sun that there is no specific protocol for students who identify as animals.

"No one seems to have a protocol for students identifying as animals, but the approach has been that if it doesn't disrupt the school, everyone is being supportive."

Despite the support from the girl's school and family, an Australian senator lashed out at the Melbourne private school for encouraging a teenager to identify as a cat.

Ralph Babet, a member of the United Australia Party, claimed the story is a symptom of the "radical left" running rampant and "unchecked" in society.

On his Facebook page, according to the Daily Mail, Senator Babet demanded an end to "woke" politics, directly calling out the teenage girl and the school in his dignified statement.

"Can we just put a stop to this garbage right now. You go to school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic," he wrote. "You are not a cat. You are a little girl. The end."

Previously, a school in Brisbane experienced the same incident after four female students were said to have taken to walking on all fours and cutting holes in their uniforms to leave room for their tails. It was believed that the girls were either identifying as foxes or cats.

Claims, which were denied by the school, made by one parent alleged that one of the girls had screamed at another student for "sitting on her tail."

"When a girl went to sit at a spare desk, another girl screamed at her and said she was sitting on her tail; there's a slit in this child's uniform where the tail apparently is," a parent told the Courier Mail.

Reports of individuals claiming to be "furries," which is a sub-culture of people who identify as animals, sometimes dressing up in costumes and wearing tails, have also happened in schools within the United States.

Back in January 2022, a school in Michigan had been forced to deny that they provide litter boxes for students who identify as "furries," after a woman made the initial claim during a school board meeting the previous month.

The 4.1-percent decrease in labor productivity reported today for the second quarter of 2022 is a 0.5- percentage point upward revision from the preliminary estimate of a 4.6-percent decrease, primarily driven by a 0.7-percentage point upward revision to output. From the same quarter a year ago, nonfarm business sector labor productivity decreased 2.4 percent.

This is the largest decline in the series, which begins in the first quarter of 1948.
