Misinformation is everywhere online, and anyone can be vulnerable to it. On social media, you may have at one point shared an article that you believed to be true at the time, but that you later discovered actually contained falsehoods or outdated information.

While both misinformation and disinformation can deceive audiences, the distinction is that disinformation is intentionally, maliciously deceptive. Both forms often involve widespread dissemination, whether or not the person sharing is aware of the inaccuracies.

It's important for everyone to know how to spot mis- and disinformation online to avoid spreading falsehoods and to be critical consumers of online news, particularly through social media.

Misinformation has become so prevalent online that some organizations have launched initiatives to tackle it, such as the Google News Initiative, and Poynter's MediaWise Teen Fact-Checking Network.

What is misinformation?

The term misinformation refers to information that is false or inaccurate, and is often spread widely with others, regardless of an intent to deceive.

Business Insider spoke with Brian Southwell, an author, social scientist, professor, and director at RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, about the differences between misinformation and disinformation, as well as how to spot each in the real world.

Examples of misinformation

There's a conspiracy theory circulating online that claims 5G cellular networks cause cancer, or even COVID-19, despite there being no scientific evidence to support this claim. The main idea behind the false claim is that 5G radio waves are harmful to the brain and cause health issues such as autism and cancer. However, experts have debunked this concern, explaining that 5G radio waves cannot damage the DNA in our cells, nor can they even penetrate past the skin, which acts as a protective barrier. This theory is an example of misinformation because it presents incorrect and out-of-context information as fact.

Germans warned of toilet paper shortage

TOKYO (AP) — People in a southwestern Japanese city have come under attack from monkeys that are trying to snatch babies, biting and clawing at flesh, and sneaking into nursery schools.

The attacks — on 58 people since July 8 — are getting so bad Yamaguchi city hall hired a special unit to hunt the animals with tranquilizer guns.

The monkeys aren’t interested in food, so traps haven’t worked. They have targeted mostly children and the elderly.

“They are so smart, and they tend to sneak up and attack from behind, often grabbing at your legs,” city official Masato Saito said Wednesday.

When confronted by a monkey, the instructions are: Do not look them in the eye, make yourself look as big as possible, such as by spreading open your coat, then back away as quietly as possible without making sudden moves, according to Saito.

A woman was assaulted by a monkey while hanging laundry on her veranda. Another victim showed bandaged toes. They were taken aback and frightened by how big and fat the monkeys were.

The monkeys terrorizing the community are Japanese macaque, the kind often pictured peacefully bathing in hot springs.

One male monkey, measuring 49 centimeters (1.6 foot) in height and weighing 7 kilograms (15 pounds), was caught Tuesday by the team with the tranquilizer gun. It was judged by various evidence to be one of the attacking monkeys and put to death.

But more attacks were reported after the capture.

No one has been seriously injured so far. But all have been advised to get hospital treatment. Ambulances were called in some cases.

Although Japan is industrialized and urban, a fair portion of land in the archipelago is mountains and forests. Rare attacks on people by a bear, boars or other wildlife have occurred, but generally not by monkeys.

No one seems to know why the attacks have occurred, and where exactly the troop of monkeys came from remains unclear.

“I have never seen anything like this my entire life,” Saito said.

Reduced supply of Russian gas could badly affect production, German media report

Germany may face shortages of such staples as toilet paper and cardboard if Russian gas supply dwindles in the coming months, German outlet Zeit Online reported on Wednesday.

Operating paper plants may become unprofitable if they are forced to produce at reduced capacity because of gas shortages, the publication cites Jürgen Schaller, Chairman of the Board of the Bavarian Paper Associations, as warning.

Producing paper requires a lot of water, electricity and gas, Schaller explained, adding that the technology is tried and tested and cannot be changed quickly.

“Many employees in my company are already very worried. I can’t blame them. Because if we can only produce 50 or 60 percent, the operation is not worthwhile for us. To be honest, I worry too.” Schaller told Zeit Online.

Germany and the EU as a whole have recently seen a reduction in natural gas supplies from Russia, which led to numerous warnings of possible industrial shutdowns. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline is currently operating at 20% capacity due to technical issues with turbines at the Portovaya compressor station. Gazprom is unable to use another transit route, via Ukraine, to full capacity because, according to the Russian energy giant, Ukraine’s gas transport network has been rejecting its transit applications.

The private military company dubbed ‘the Musicians’ is fighting against Kiev forces

RT’s Murad Gazdiev was granted a rare opportunity to embed with the Wagner Group, a secretive Russian private military company, as it fights in Donbass.

The contractors, who call themselves ‘the Orchestra of Wagner’ or ‘the Musicians’, conceal their identities. The name is thought to have come from the call sign of the unit’s founder Dmitry Utkin, a veteran of two Chechen wars. Richard Wagner was a famous 19th century German composer but the name has also been used for characters in literature, computer games, comic books, and even by a motorcycle manufacturer.

Before Murad joined them, the unit had recently pushed Ukrainian troops out of the village of Klinovoe in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The Wagner fighters fired mortars as Ukraine’s ultra-nationalist Aidar Battalion and the ostensibly elite 10th Mountain Assault Brigade were trying to hold them off. “Artillery and mortar duels here are deafening and endless,” Gazdiev said while reporting.

During their offensive, the Wagner troops came under fire from cluster munitions and had to deal with tripwire anti-personnel mines left by the Ukrainians. “What the sappers can remove safely, they do. What they can’t – or what they deem could be a trap – they blow [up],” Gazdiev said.

The fighting in Donbass intensified after Russia launched a full-scale military campaign against Ukraine in late February.

Before the conflict, the outfit had reportedly been operating in the Middle East and Africa. The Kremlin has denied any ties between the Wagner Group and the Russian government.

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko has since admitted that Kiev’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to buy time and “create powerful armed forces.”

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked.

Boris Johnson tipped for NATO job – reports

The outgoing UK prime minister could replace Jens Stoltenberg as secretary general of the alliance next year, The Telegraph says

Senior members of the Conservative Party are backing the prospect of outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson becoming the next NATO secretary general, The Telegraph has reported.

The current chief of the US-led military bloc Jens Stoltenberg is “widely expected to stand down in September next year,” leaving the high-profile defense position open, the paper said.

This timing would provide Johnson with “some time to recharge his batteries” after a three-year run as British prime minister, it pointed out.

The 58-year-old announced his resignation earlier this month after several high-profile scandals and a wave of resignations among his cabinet ministers. He’ll remain in office until September 6.

The NATO secretary general is appointed unanimously by all NATO members, and, according to The Telegraph, Johnson has a good chance of landing the job as he “won international credit for helping to build the international coalition against Russia’s Vladimir Putin” following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine.

London has been one of Kiev’s strongest backers, supplying the country with weapons, training its troops, and advocating a military solution to the crisis, while also imposing sweeping sanctions on Russia.

The US would also prefer a British candidate for secretary general due to its “distrust around any European Union figures taking the job given repeated suggestions of plans for a new EU army,” the paper argued.

“Any distinguished Brit would be a great choice [to lead NATO]. If indeed that is what Boris Johnson wants to go and do, of course I would support that,” said Richard Drax, a senior Conservative member of the Defense Select Committee.

Another committee member, Mark Francois, insisted “people will probably argue over Boris Johnson’s legacy for years – but one thing which is clearly inarguable is his absolutely staunch support for Ukraine in the face of Russian barbarity.”

“If he were to apply to become the secretary general of NATO, I suspect he could rely on [Ukrainian] President Zelensky for a reference,” he added.

Former Brexit minister David Jones also pointed out that “it was Boris who went to Sweden and Finland and urged the leaders of both countries to make applications for NATO membership, which of course they did.”

However, not all Tories are backing Johnson, with former head of the British Army Lord Dannatt suggesting that he is unfit for the NATO role due to his “personal stuff, the lack of integrity, the lack of trust.”

“Frankly, we don’t want to expose Boris Johnson on the international stage for more ridicule. He is a national embarrassment,” he said.

A senior Ministry of Defense official, who spoke to The Telegraph on condition of anonymity, also suggested that France would likely veto any British candidate who applies to become NATO secretary general.

Ukrainian MP Aleksey Goncharenko said Johnson was “the right person” for the role as he “understands the challenges that NATO and the West face.” However, Ukraine will not have a vote as it’s not a member of NATO.

Downing Street declined to comment when contacted about the issue by the Telegraph.

If the British politician does become NATO secretary general, it’ll likely deteriorate relations between the alliance and Moscow even further. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier this month that the “aggressively” anti-Russian policies of Britain in recent years could be attributed to Johnson personally_. The outgoing UK PM is someone who always aims to “put on a show” and who “clung to power to the last to further his own political career in every possible way,” he said.

Western energy firms to exit Russian oil project

Norway’s Equinor and France’s Total will sell their stakes due to anti-Russia sanctions

The Russian government has issued an order for the shares held by Norway’s energy company Equinor and France’s TotalEnergies in a major oil field, to be transferred to the project’s operator, state-run Zarubezhneft.

The European companies decided to pull out of the Kharyaga oil project due to international sanctions against Russia. Equinor held a 30% stake in the field, and Total owned 20%. The terms of the equity transfers have not been disclosed.

Both firms had been part of the Kharyaga onshore oil development, located in Russia’s Arctic, for over 20 years. It is one of three production sharing projects in Russia, with two others – Sakhalin 1 and Sakhalin 2 – operating larger offshore oil and gas deposits near Sakhalin Island in Russia’s Far East.

Zarubezhneft will now hold a 90% stake in Kharyaga, with locally owned Nenets Oil holding the remaining 10%.

US wants ‘accountability’ for death of Palestinian journalist

America’s top diplomat met with the reporter’s relatives after the State Department declined to blame Israeli troops for her death

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said those responsible for the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh would be held accountable, as her family members continue to demand action and insist she was killed by Israeli troops.

After meeting with relatives of Abu Akleh on Tuesday, Blinken voiced his “deepest condolences” and made a “commitment to pursue accountability for her tragic killing,” but did not specify what additional steps might be taken.

State Department spokesman Ned Price later stressed “the priority we attach to accountability” in relation to Abu Akleh’s death, but also offered few other details on how the White House plans to proceed or what was discussed during the sit-down with Blinken.

A veteran Al Jazeera journalist, Abu Akleh was shot dead while covering an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank last May, despite wearing prominent markings indicating she was a member of the press.

While the United Nations, along with media outlets and humanitarian organizations, investigated the incident and concluded Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli fire,an official US probe said it “could not reach a definitive conclusion” about who pulled the trigger. The report acknowledged Israeli forces were “likely responsible,” but said there was no evidence she was intentionally murdered, in line with later comments from Israeli officials.

The journalist’s family was highly critical of the American investigation, saying they were “incredulous” about its inconclusive findings, and continue to press for consequences for Abu Akleh’s killer.

Following Tuesday’s meeting with Blinken, the journalist’s niece, Lina Abu Akleh, stated that while the official “made some commitments on Shireen’s killing,” her family is “still waiting to see if this administration will meaningfully answer our calls for justice for Shireen.”

“[Secretary Blinken] told us that he has a duty to protect every US citizen. We will hold him to this,” she continued. “Nothing short of a US investigation that leads to real accountability is acceptable, and we won’t stop until no other American or Palestinian family endures the same pain we have.”

While the Joe Biden administration has made few public statements about whether it has pressed Israeli officials on the matter, Blinken reportedly raised the issue in private during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid earlier this month. According to Israeli officials reached by Axios, however, the government has no plans for further action on the case beyond a military investigation already underway, and criminal charges are unlikely.

The Israeli military, for its part, initially suggested the journalist was killed by a Palestinian militant, but later said it was unable to determine who fired the fatal shot. Nevertheless, it stated “conclusively” that Israeli troops harbored “no intention to harm” Abu Akleh and did not deliberately shoot at her during the raid.

Ukraine is pursuing war-crimes charges against leaders of major Western banks, an official said.

The Zelenskyy advisor Oleg Ustenko earlier asked the banks to stop financing traders of Russian oil.

Ustenko told CNBC on Tuesday that Ukraine was gathering data on banks and would pass it to the ICC.

Ukraine is pursuing war-crimes charges against leaders of JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and other major Western banks over their purported indirect financing of the Russian state, an economic advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday.

"There is no doubt that Russia is committing war crimes in Ukraine, against Ukrainians," Oleg Ustenko, the advisor, said in an interview with CNBC. "In our logic, everybody who is financing these war criminals who are doing these terrible things in Ukraine are also committing war crimes."

Earlier this month, Ustenko wrote to JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and the bosses of Citigroup and HSBC asking them to cut ties with companies that trade Russian oil and sell shares in Russian oil and gas firms such as Gazprom and Rosneft.

Ustenko said of the banks in his CNBC interview: "We are going to pursue, not maybe companies, but managers of these companies."

He added: "We have different options. The first option is definitely ICC."

Ustenko said Ukraine's justice and security services were gathering information about the banks' activities that would be passed to the International Criminal Court.

The ICC has the power to prosecute people but not entities.

In his letters to the bank CEOs, which were seen by the Financial Times, Ustenko accused the banks of "prolonging" the war in Ukraine.

JPMorgan provides credit to Vitol, which trades Russian oil, and the bank's Russian securities investment trust holds shares in Rosneft, Sberbank, and Gazprom, Ustenko said in his letter to Dimon, per the Financial Times. HSBC's asset-management arm also has stakes in Gazprom and Rosneft, and Citigroup extends credit to Vitol and the Russian energy giant Lukoil, the letters said, per the Financial Times.

JPMorgan, HSBC, and Citigroup didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.

Citi told the Financial Times it had cut down its business in Russia. JPMorgan told the publication it had helped implement sanctions against Russia.

The past two months have seen a barrage of negative news coverage focusing on the US housing market…

… which is predictable: after all, with mortgage rates soaring at the fastest pace on record to decade highs, and sending US housing affordability to the lowest in history…

… only a handful of the "1%" can afford the American Dream.

Alas, it also means that just like in 2007, a housing crash is now just a matter of time.

That much is known. What is also know, is that once housing craters, the largest US residential and commercial landlord - private equity giant Blackstone - is about to get even bigger. That's when it will deploy some (or all) of the record $50 billion in dry powder it has raised to prepare for just the coming housing crash.

According to the WSJ, Blackstone is the final stages of raising a new real-estate fund that would set a record as the biggest vehicle of its kind, defying market volatility and a crowded landscape for fundraising.

The private-equity giant said in a regulatory filing Wednesday it has closed on commitments totaling $24.1 billion for Blackstone Real Estate Partners X, the latest iteration of its main real-estate fund.

According to the WSJ, Blackstone is committing about $300 million of its own capital and has allocated an additional $5.9 billion to investors, which will bring the fund to $30.3 billion when it is finalized. The firm raised the fund, expected to be the largest traditional private-equity vehicle in history, in just three month. It was also Blackstone that set the prior record, with the $26 billion buyout fund it raised in 2019. The new real-estate fund will be 50% larger than its predecessor, a $20.5 billion pool raised in 2019.

Together with funds dedicated to real estate in Asia and Europe, Blackstone will have a war chest of more than $50 billion to do so-called opportunistic investments, which tend to be higher-risk deals with the potential for higher returns.

That, according to the WSJ, "could allow the firm to take advantage of a downturn in the public markets." Translation: at a time when Americans are liquidating their housing en masse to shore up liquidity when the bottom falls out from the economy, Blackstone will step in and buy all the distressed properties at pennies on the dollar, becoming an even bigger presence in US, and global, real estate.

Not surprisingly, many of Blackstone’s best-performing deals—like its 2014 purchase of the Cosmopolitan casino and hotel in Las Vegas and its 2016 deal for life-sciences buildings owner BioMed Realty Trust —were struck during periods of market turmoil.

It won't be just Blackstone that goes bottom fishing in a few months: a slew of private-equity funds are in the market this year, with many trying to raise huge sums even after stocks fell and deal-making dried up. The surge in requests for new cash has overwhelmed investment teams at institutions such as pension funds and endowments and has meant many have delayed making commitments to all but the top managers.

The size of Blackstone’s new fund and the speed at which it was able to raise the money demonstrate that institutional investors are still eager to participate in vehicles being offered by established managers with good records. And while the ranks of $20 billion-plus buyout funds have been growing, there are still relatively few real-estate megafunds comparable with Blackstone’s.
