Lawsuit filed against a US shipping company linked to Beirut blast

The families of Beirut port blast victims have filed a lawsuit against US firm TGS Nopec Geophysical, owner of British firm Spectrum Geo for its suspected links to the Ammonium nitrate-carrying ship Rhosus.

The probe was filed this week in Texas against the US-Norwegian geophysical services group TGS.

Families of the Beirut port blast victims accuse Spectrum of "negligence that resulted in the death of their loved ones”.

Meanwhile, the prosecutors hope that Spectrum's exact role in the explosion will be clarified.

The explosion was described as one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in recent history, killing over 200 people, injuring thousands, and destroying entire neighborhoods.

The complaint accuses Spectrum of chartering the Moldovan-flagged Rhosus in 2013 to sail to the port of Beirut, a dilapidated boat containing hundreds of tons of nitrates originally intended for Mozambique.

While the ship was not supposed to head to Beirut, Spectrum sent it there to retrieve a large amount of seismic analysis equipment, and as soon as it arrived, it began loading 160 tons of seismic survey equipment that the Lebanese authorities had allegedly previously requested.

The ship unloaded the ammonium nitrate and stored it in the Beirut port because the extra load could permanently break and damage the boat. The nitrates were left there for seven years.

The complaint says that chartering a boat that is "recklessly unseaworthy and carrying explosives without the necessary permits, is a violation of individual contract terms, local law, and industry best practice, and is ultimately responsible for this horrific explosion."

The cataclysmic explosion occurred when the remaining 2,750-tonne stock of ammonium nitrate left by Rhosus seven years earlier caught fire.

It is still unknown what caused the fire.

The nine plaintiffs are all US citizens and include Sarah Copland, the mother of two-year-old Isaac Copland, who was one of the explosion's youngest victims.

Ford O'Brien Landy LLP is the lead counsel in the "strict liability" case, and Accountability Now's lawyer Zena Wakim said TGS' response should be known "in the coming months."

"The evidence that will be generated by this lawsuit can also benefit the Lebanese investigation," Wakim said as quoted by AFP.

"The spirit of the claim is to benefit all the victims," she added.

Two years after the explosion, one of the victims, lawyer Tania Abu Alam, was quoted in Swiss newspaper Le Temps as saying: "There are a lot of gray areas. Why did Spectrum hire the Rhosus (the cargo-carrying ammonium nitrate) to transport earthquake machines when it was a death ship? ".

Abu Alam questioned the reason behind the company’s decision to choose this particular ship from among all available ships, despite the fact that it was already at 300 percent of its maximum allowable capacity, with 2,750 tons of explosives on board, flying the Moldovan flag, and lacking the ramps required to transport the alleged seismic machinery."

Italy’s prime minister, Mario Draghi, says he will resign as coalition collapses

Mario Draghi said he would resign as Italian prime minister on Thursday.

His announcement comes after a party in his ruling coalition did not participate in a confidence vote.

“I will tender my resignation to the president of the republic this evening,” Draghi told the cabinet, according to a statement released by his office.

“The national unity coalition that backed this government no longer exists,” he added.

The confidence vote had become a focal point for tensions within Draghi’s government as its parties prepare to fight each other in a national election due by early 2023.

The decision by the 5-Star party to boycott the confidence vote on Thursday had plunged Italy into political uncertainty and risked undermining efforts to secure billions of euros in European Union funds, tackle a damaging drought and reduce its reliance on Russian gas.

Draghi raised the stakes by saying he would not want to lead a government without 5-Star, who emerged as the largest party in the previous election in 2018 but have since suffered defections and a loss of public support.

It could lead to national elections as early as September or October after other coalition parties said there should be a vote if 5-Star no longer backed the government.

Italian PM Draghi is stepping down

Mario Draghi won a confidence vote, but lost his coalition partners

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced on Thursday that he would resign. Draghi survived a confidence vote despite his coalition partners in the Five Star Movement abstaining, but said he would step down after meeting with President Sergio Mattarella.

The former European Central Bank chief had led a coalition government since last February, but as of late faced persistent criticism from Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte over the rising cost of living.

While Draghi’s coalition drew members from both left and right, the Italian premier had said that he would not stay on without the support of Conte’s party. Although he comfortably won the confidence vote even without the participation of Five Star lawmakers, he met with Mattarella immediately afterwards.

“I have always said that this executive would only go forward if there was a clear prospect of being able to carry out the government program on which the political forces had voted their confidence,” he said. “This compactness was fundamental to face the challenges of these months. These conditions no longer exist.”

Draghi is the second G7 leader to resign in short succession, after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced last week that he would step down, amid personal scandals and a similarly grim economic outlook.

While the Five Star Movement began as the largest partner in Draghi’s coalition, it was later split over his policies. Conte has spoken out against Draghi’s arming of Ukraine and military spending hikes, while former foreign minister Luigi DiMaio has left Conte’s party to form a new faction loyal to Draghi.

DiMaio has accused Conte of withdrawing his support from Draghi in a bid to bring the government down and solidify his own support. Centrist Senator Antonio Saccone, an ally of Draghi, declared on Thursday that Conte’s party was “doing a favor to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin” by abstaining from the vote.

Prior to Draghi’s announcement, a general election had been scheduled for next year. However, snap elections may now be called in autumn.

The former business partner of Hunter Biden’s attorney was picked as Chief of Biden’s Justice Department’s Criminal Division. Now he’s blocking any serious investigation of Hunter Biden.

We reported more than a year ago about Nicholas McQuaid, Biden’s pick in his Justice Department who is connected to Hunter Biden. FOX News reported this at the time:

Fox News host Tucker Carlson reported a former business partner of Hunter Biden’s criminal defense attorney has been picked as a top Justice Department official in President Biden’s new administration.

It has already been revealed that Nicholas McQuaid, a former federal prosecutor, was picked as acting chief of the Justice Department’s criminal division. Hunter Biden confirmed in early December, after his father won the 2020 election, that he was under federal investigation.

Carlson said on his show Friday night that McQuaid worked with Christopher Clark as partners at Latham & Watkins and worked on cases together right until McQuaid took the job at the Justice Department.

It now looks like McQuaid is doing exactly what he was hired to do, prevent and stop any investigations of Hunter Biden.

Biden’s DOJ reported on McQuaid’s hiring on January 21, 2021, a day after the Biden inauguration. The press release failed to mention McQuaid’s partner was Hunter Biden’s criminal attorney. McQuaid was put over the criminal division.

For some reason there is nothing going on with Hunter Biden’s laptop and no investigations of Hunter that we know of despite buckets of real and potential crimes. How could this be?

Saudi-Israeli normalization 'inevitable' - ex-US ambassador

Riyadh and "Tel Aviv" normalizing ties is "inevitable," former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Joseph Westphal said Monday, urging US President Joe Biden to mend ties with the kingdom during his upcoming trip to the Gulf state.

"I think [normalization is] coming, that's absolutely coming, and it's inevitable. It's inevitable," Westphal told The National News on Monday. Westphal used to be Washington's ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the Obama administration from 2014 until 2017.

Recent efforts, such as a push by the Biden administration ahead of Biden's trip to the region that will kick off today, have opened the door for the bolstering of ties.

The inevitability of normalization stems from the shift in Saudi Arabia's policy that will take place when Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman takes the place of his father, King Salman, Westphal said, calling the matter a "generational shift" while also citing Riyadh and "Tel Aviv's" common security and economic interests.

"King Salman, who I got to know very well when I was there as ambassador and have huge respect for him, he is from the generation that really believes that we should do more to help the Palestinian people," he added. Saudi's policy, he said, will eventually shift as long as Washington continues working in West Asia and "support[ing] the Palestinian people."

Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia was described by the former diplomat as "extremely important" in the context of bilateral, regional, and global politics, especially in light of the schism that exists between Washington and Riyadh.

Over the past year and a half, ties between the United States and Saudi Arabia have been deteriorating in light of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi and the kingdom's position on oil production, especially following the start of the Ukraine war.

Riyadh has rebuffed requests by the United States for more oil, as Saudi Arabia has the potential of easing pressure on supply and prices, which would mitigate the current economic crisis.

"[Biden] is a bridge builder. He did it for years and years in the Senate, with Republican opponents and sometimes with his own Democrats who opposed him. He will come around and find a way to work with Prince Mohammed and to restore this relationship in a positive [manner]," the former diplomat said.

"It focuses on things like security, cyber security, intelligence, as well as economic trade and development. In other words, to create a better union of these countries to protect the trade routes," he said regarding the Gulf Cooperation Council meeting.

"This would be just the beginning, the first step, then we will send the secretary of defense, the secretary of state, the secretary of commerce, engage the private sector and others within the region to talk about how we work on all these issues," Westphal stressed.

Reports about Biden's visit to Saudi Arabia visit - ironically - come the same day as White House Spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said Biden's remarks about Saudi Arabia, which he described as a "pariah", still stood.

The Biden admin has been cooperating closer and closer with Saudi Arabia in recent months, especially on the Saudi-led war on Yemen, as Washington pushed Riyadh to extend an armistice with Sanaa. Biden also went as far as praising the role of Saudi officials in the armistice, saying that the country "demonstrated courageous leadership" just because it decided to stop dropping bombs on Yemeni civilians - as it has been doing for nearly a decade.

A Minnesota zoo worker is recovering after a camel bit him on the head.

Just before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of an animal bite at Hemker Park & Zoo, which is located in the small town of Freeport, near St. Cloud.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies learned that the victim, identified as Roger Blenker, was escorting a camel through an alleyway to prepare it for transport to another facility, according to a news release from the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

"During the process, the camel placed Blenker's head into its mouth, biting down on his head. The camel then dragged Blenker by the head approximately fifteen feet," the news release stated.

A second employee, identified as Seth Wickson, stepped in to intervene by placing a plastic walking board into the camel's mouth to release its bite from Blenker's head, police say. After Blenker, 32, was freed from the camel's bite, he was able to stand on his own and run to safety.

However, the camel then charged at Wickson, 32, and bit his head. He was able to get to a safe location on his own and refused any medical treatment, according to police.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office for comment.

Blenker was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link Helicopter and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Our owner did sustain minor injuries," Hemker Park & Zoo wrote in a statement on Facebook shortly after the incident occurred. "The camel was not injured during the interaction and remains in good health. We thank you all for your continued support."

In a separate update posted on their Facebook page Wednesday evening, the zoo wrote, "The owner has been examined by the medical providers and per protocol he had to be transferred. He has been alert, oriented and able to move around with some minor injuries that are all non-life threatening … We want to thank all of the medical providers and the support and prayers from everyone. It is greatly appreciated."

PEOPLE has reached out to Hemker Park & Zoo for additional comment.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Melrose Ambulance and the Freeport Fire Department.

The incident remains under investigation. The zoo is still open to the public.

In an exclusive report, TGP has obtained information of illegal immigrants being trafficked through San Antonio on their way to the East Coast, in this case, Baltimore.

We reported months ago on flights from the Southern border to the Northeast. There were even flights with children on them. We tracked these charter flights and the children to a New York Adoption agency. These flights were at night.

We’ve obtained information today on illegals trafficked in San Antonio through a major US airport on a major US airline.

Illegals are being bussed into terminal B in San Antonio where they are handled at a sort of make-shift counter.

At this point, individuals are all given a manila envelope. One group of immigrants was given boarding passes on Southwest Airlines on a flight to Baltimore.

The immigrants are then escorted over to Terminal A. They then go through the premium lane, skipping the general boarding area.

Below is a copy of a typical boarding pass. It’s marked with a “STIPC Bond Release” – we’re not even sure what this means.

But it seems protests are following him wherever he goes.

CNN reports that Rajapaksa "has fled Maldives on board a flight for Singapore, a high-ranking security source in Colombo told CNN, as anger grows in his home country over his refusal to formally resign."

Family members were also being ferried out of the capital as it descended into chaos. To leave the Maldives, he may have had some help from the Saudis, the report continues:

Rajapaksa left the capital of the Maldives, Malé, on board a "Saudi flight," the source said. Rajapaksa had been waiting to secure a "private jet" from a close family member in Colombo, but that had "not materialized," the source added.

CNN believes the source was referring to Saudia flight 788, which left Malé at 11:30 a.m. according to the source. The flight landed in Singapore at 7:17 p.m. local time Thursday, according to the Changi Airport website. Saudia is the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia.

Former prime minister and Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office was also stormed just as Gotabaya was safely in the Maldives.
