Foreign fighters seek ‘adventure’ in Ukraine – captured colonel

The officer claims to have been surprised by the reason his British troops gave for joining Kiev’s forces

Foreign fighters are joining the Ukrainian military in search of “adventure,” the commander of Kiev’s 36th Naval Infantry Brigade has told RT. He was captured by Russian forces during fighting in Mariupol.

Colonel Vladimir Baranyuk said there were foreigners in the ranks of his unit, explaining that Ukrainian legislation allows citizens from other countries to join its armed forces. “They sign official contracts and serve,” he said.

Baranyuk recalled at least two foreign troops – “both from Great Britain” – being under his command.

“One was called Aiden… I can’t remember the other one’s name… a really short last name,” he said.

The commander could be referring to British nationals Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, who were captured in the city of Mariupol in April. Aslin and Pinner, who are believed to be mercenaries, are accused of crimes against civilians by the People’s Republic of Donetsk.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised in late April to “do what we can” to free the duo through a prisoner swap. However, the PM pointed out that it was up to Ukraine to make the final decision on the matter. Aslin and Pinner “were not hostages and they are not to be swapped as though they are terrorists – they are prisoners of war,” he added.

According to Baranyuk, foreigners began to arrive in Ukraine with the aim of enlisting in its military prior to 2018.

“When I assumed command of the brigade, I tried asking them [why]. They said they wanted, well, to serve, so to speak. To be honest, I was surprised by their reasoning,” he recalled.

“I asked them ‘Why? What’s the point? Can’t you make money elsewhere?’ They said ‘No, it’s not like that. We’re adventure-seekers,’” the commander revealed.

There was nothing special about the foreign troops, who all held “ordinary positions” in the unit, he insisted. “I can’t say they did anything extraordinary; that they were any different, say, from our marines.”

During his interview, Baranyuk also slammed the Western weaponry provided to Kiev by the US and its allies. He described the American Javelin anti-tank systems as “useful, especially in urban warfare,” and revealed that the battery of its British counterpart NLAW drained too quickly in cold weather, making the weapon impossible to use.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said last month that an estimated 6,824 foreign mercenaries from 63 countries had come to Ukraine, responding to a call by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Of these, 1,035 had been “eliminated,” while more than 900 have fled the country, Russia said.

Earlier this week, a Canadian mercenary known as ‘Wali’, who had been hailed as “the best sniper in the world” by the Western media, gave an interview in which he described his Ukrainian experience as a “terrible disappointment.” He said he decided to return to Quebec because of inadequate weaponry, poor training and heavy losses among the Kiev troops, as well as looting and desertion in their ranks.

Baranyuk and his marines had been assigned the mission of securing the northern outskirts of Mariupol, a strategic port city in the southeast of Ukraine, from the advancing Russian forces, but failed to fulfill it.

The commander was captured during a botched attempt to flee the city, which he claims he undertook together with several loyal men after realizing that Kiev’s promises to send help to his encircled troops were lies.

Mariupol has been the scene of the most intense fighting during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, suffering immense destruction. The city is now almost entirely controlled by Russian forces, with the Azovstal steel plant – where Ukrainian servicemen and nationalist fighters of the notorious Azov Battalion are holed up – remaining the last pocket of resistance.

Country blocking EU ban on Russian oil revealed – media

Hungary has reportedly continued to block proposed new sanctions package

EU ambassadors have so far failed to reach an agreement on a new package of sanctions against Russia, as Hungary continues to oppose a ban on Russian oil imports, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, citing sources familiar with the talks.

The EU has already come up with five rounds of sanctions, which are being imposed in response to Moscow’s ongoing military offensive in Ukraine.

Earlier this week the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyden confirmed that proposals for the sixth package of sanctions include a gradually implemented total embargo on Russian oil. This is arguably the toughest measure so far for the EU itself, considering that in 2021, the bloc as a whole received 25% of its oil imports from Russia, according to Eurostat data.

Acknowledging the objections of Hungary and Slovakia, which heavily rely on Russian imports, the EU has reportedly offered these two countries, as well as the Czech Republic, to postpone their implementation of sanctions until 2024. Other countries are supposed to switch to alternative supplies early next year at the latest.

However, as Bloomberg’s sources claim, this concession was not enough to convince Hungary, which continued to block the agreement on Sunday, during the meeting of the EU’s 27 ambassadors. Two days prior to that, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban said that the oil ban would be a “nuclear bomb” for his country’s economy and revealed that he wants the EU to give Hungary five years to replace Russian oil.

However, the oil ban is apparently not the only problematic part of the sanctions package. The proposed ban on providing vessels and services needed to transfer Russian oil to third countries has raised eyebrows in Greece and Cyprus which, according to Bloomberg, are “still holding up” this portion of the package.

Other proposed measures include cutting more Russian banks from SWIFT payment systems and forbidding Russian entities and individuals to buy property in the EU.

Any measures have to be unanimously approved by the bloc's 27 member countries.

In late March, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the unprecedented Western sanctions – both those already imposed and those still being discussed. He criticized the behavior of some politicians, who, in Putin’s words, urged their own citizens to “eat less, put on more clothes, and use less heating, give up on travel – presumably for the benefit of the people who are demanding this kind of voluntary deprivation as a sign of some abstract North Atlantic solidarity.”

Brazil’s ex-president to challenge ‘criminal’ Bolsonaro

Lula de Silva will run in Brazil’s presidential election, and vows to send “fascism back to the sewer of history”

Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva – known simply as Lula – announced on Saturday that he will run in October’s presidential election, facing off against the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. While Lula leads Bolsonaro in opinion polls, he has recently earned notoriety in the West for his stance on the Ukraine conflict.

"We're ready to work not only to win the election on October 2, but to rebuild and transform Brazil, which will be even more difficult," the former union leader told a rally in Sao Paulo. “We need to return to a place where no one ever dares to defy democracy again. We need to send fascism back to the sewer of history, where it should have been all along.”

A leftist, Lula has said that he will ally with center-left parties, and has chosen centrist former Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin as a running mate, in a bid to peel moderate voters away from Bolsonaro, whom he described on Saturday as an “authoritarian” and an “irresponsible” “criminal.”

However, Lula himself was until recently on the wrong side of the law. After governing Brazil between 2003 and 2010 and leaving office with an approval rating of 80%,Lula was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2017 for alleged involvement in a corruption and money laundering scheme within the state-run oil company Petrobras. The sentence was later increased to 12 years.

Lula maintained his innocence and told RT in 2018 that there was “a conspiracy in Brazil between the media, the judiciary, the prosecution service and police” against him. Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court eventually agreed and struck down his conviction in 2021, ruling that former judge Sergio Moro, who oversaw the investigation against Lula and was later appointed justice minister, had no jurisdiction to prosecute the former president.

Following the annulment, it was widely assumed that Lula, who is 76, would launch another run for office. Opinion polling placed him comfortably ahead of Bolsonaro for several months, although that lead has shrunk, and Lula now leads the incumbent right-winger by 40% to 35%.

On the international stage, Lula has rattled the West on two significant issues: last week he proposed the creation of a common Latin American currency to break the dominance of the US dollar, and in an interview with Time magazine several days later, he declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “as responsible as [Russian President Vladimir] Putin for the war.”

Lula went on to blame NATO expansion for antagonizing Russia, and condemned Western leaders for encouraging and arming Zelensky to continue fighting Russia’s forces.

Amid an outcry from Western journalists, Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to Zelensky, responded by accusing Lula of spreading "Russian attempts to distort the truth."

World risks ‘worst (manmade, fixed it) famine since WWII’ – German minister

Millions’ could die because of the pandemic and the ongoing military action in Ukraine, Germany's development minister believes

The world is about to face an acute food crisis due to skyrocketing food prices, German Economic Cooperation and Development Minister Svenja Schulze told Bild newspaper on Saturday, warning about a looming famine not seen since World War II. The minister has named Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine as its causes.

“The situation is highly dramatic,” the minister told the German tabloid in a late Saturday interview, adding that, according to the UN World Food Program, “more than 300 million people” are already suffering from acute hunger and the UN has to “constantly revise” this data upwards.

Food prices around the world have grown by a third and have reached “record levels,” Schulze has warned, adding that the “bitter message is that we are facing the worst famine since World War II,” which could see “millions” die.

In its May 6 statement, the World Food Program has warned that “44 million people around the world are marching towards starvation” because Ukrainian grain cannot reach them, and called for the Black Sea ports to be opened so that this grain could be delivered to the needy.

Minister Schulze was quick to blame Moscow for the development by accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of “waging a war through hunger.” She claimed that Russia had “stolen grain from Ukraine” and is now taking advantage of nations depending on Russian and Ukrainian agricultural products by supposedly offering food only to those, who are “unequivocally pro-Russian.”

The minister has also claimed that the fact that 40 nations that are “home to half of the world’s population” did not condemn Russia's actions in Ukraine was supposedly a result of their "vulnerability to food blackmail." She didn’t offer any specific evidence to support this statement, though.

At the same time, she did admit that some nations' focus on green energy has contributed to the food shortage as well. Germany in particular should stop using food as fuel, she has suggested. Up to 4% of the so-called biofuel in Germany is made from food and animal feed, she said, adding that "it needs to be reduced to zero, and not just in Germany but potentially internationally."

Germany "pours 2.7 billion liters of fuel [made] from vegetable oils into car tanks every year," she pointed out, adding that this alone amounts to "almost a half of Ukraine's sunflower oil production."

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has prompted fears of global grain shortages as wheat prices soared to multiple-year highs in March. Both Russia and Ukraine are major wheat suppliers, accounting for some 30% of global exports.

In mid-April, however, German Agriculture Minister Cem Ozdemir insisted that supplying Kiev with "more effective" weaponry was precisely what would have helped the world to avoid the supposedly looming "global famine." Ozdemir, a member of the strongly pro-US/NATO Alliance 90/The Greens party, also accused Moscow of "starvation strategy" at that time.

His position appears to be quite different from at least two groups of German public figures, politicians and celebrities, who have called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to stop arms supplies to Ukraine and to focus on a speedy diplomatic solution instead.

Continued arms deliveries would only prolong the suffering of Ukrainians as well as risk potentially devastating consequences, ranging from a possible global war to a "catastrophic" impact on global health and climate change, the co-authors of two open letters have warned. Berlin has not reacted to any of the letters so far.

World leader and first lady visit Ukraine

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and US First Lady Jill Biden made separate visits to the war-torn country

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Ukraine on Sunday to pledge support and meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, while US First Lady Jill Biden made a separate trip to meet with Zelensky’s wife. While US President Joe Biden has not traveled to Ukraine, visiting Kiev has become a rite of passage for other Western leaders.

Trudeau’s trip, which was not announced beforehand, saw him tour the battle-scarred Kiev suburb of Irpen and raise his country’s flag over the newly-reopened Canadian embassy in Kiev, ahead of a scheduled meeting with Zelensky. Trudeau’s office said the meeting is intended to “reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.”

Canada has committed over $91.6 million in military aid to Ukraine since January, and its 2022-2023 budget allocates an additional $388 million in arms for Kiev. Among the weapons already sent by Canada are 155mm howitzers and shoulder-fired anti-armor ammunition.

Separately,Jill Biden met with Zelensky’s wife Olena at a village near the Slovakian border. Olena Zelenska and the couple’s children have remained in safety in western Ukraine since the outbreak of hostilities in February.

US President Joe Biden has not visited Ukraine, with security concerns apparently getting in the way of any potential trip by the American leader. Entering Ukraine from Poland would involve an “eight-hour train through a war zone,” former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki explained last month, and hence was “not in the plans for the president of the US.”

However, a host of US lawmakers from both parties have made the trip, as have Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Tony Blinken. The Biden administration has also sent Ukraine nearly $4 billion in military aid since Russia launched its offensive, and Biden has urged Congress to pass his $33 billion Ukraine aid package, $20 billion of which would fund weapons and other military support for Kiev.

Furthermore, Biden will sign the Lend-Lease Act of 2022 on Monday, reviving a piece of World War II-era legislation to allow the US to export unlimited quantities of weapons to Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly condemned the US and its NATO allies for delivering arms to Ukraine, insisting that the inflow of supplies will only prolong the conflict.

Aside from Trudeau and Mrs. Biden, dozens of Western politicians, lawmakers and dignitaries have visited Kiev since Russian troops pulled back from the city’s outskirts early last month. The prime ministers of the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are among those who have traveled to the Ukrainian capital.

Russia compares Ukrainian forces to terrorists

Kremlin reacts to reports that Ukrainian troops holed up at the steelworks want to swap civilians for food and medicine

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has compared the terms for a civilian evacuation allegedly put forward by Ukrainian troops besieged at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol to demands made previously by terrorists in Syria.

Speaking on Thursday, Peskov reacted to reports that the Ukrainian forces holed up at the plant wanted to exchange civilians held there for food and medicine.

Earlier an unnamed representative of the Russian Command in charge of the operation at the vast Azovstal plant made the claim to Russia’s Ria Novosti news outlet. The official told journalists that “we’ve seen such methods before, for instance in Syria,” where terrorists also tried to exchange people for food. According to the Ria Novosti report, “more than 200 civilians, including women, children and the elderly could be held in Azovstal’s underground tunnels and bunkers.”

Vyacheslav Volodin, the Chairman of Russia’s State Duma, also commented on the report on Thursday. In his Telegram post, he claimed that the “militants at Azovstal had suggested swapping the remaining civilians there for food and medicine.” Volodin also revealed the terms of the alleged deal – “fifteen hostages for a ton of food, as well as medicine.” He also added that the Ukrainian troops supposedly “warned that they would no longer release anyone to Ukraine,” but rather exchange for goods.

The Russian politician accused the Ukrainian forces of having first lured civilians into the steelworks, only to later use them as human shields and attempt to trade them for food. According to Volodin, the besieged pro-Kiev troops effectively equated a human life with 66.6 kilograms of goods. The Russian official claimed that the Ukrainian fighters were only interested in saving their own hides.

He described this behavior as typical of “terrorists.”

Russian forces claim to control the entire port city of Mariupol, except for the Azovstal steelworks – the last Ukrainian stronghold there.

The huge Soviet-era plant has an extensive network of fortified Cold-War-era bunkers and tunnels where Ukrainian soldiers, as well as nationalist battalions, have been besieged for over a month.

On April 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin called off an operation to storm the plant, fearing heavy casualties among Russian troops, and ordered instead to impose a complete blockade of the Ukrainian forces holed up there.

In recent days, however, reports have been coming in that fighting resumed at the steelworks. Ukraine’s Unian news outlet claimed on Wednesday evening that a former employee who had worked at the steelworks showed Russian forces “secret tunnels beneath the plant.” According to the report, Russian troops were trying to force their way into the bunkers but were facing resistance from the Ukrainian forces.

The Donetsk People’s Republic had earlier accused the Ukrainian fighters of using an evacuation ceasefire to take up new positions at the plant, which forced Russian troops to strike with artillery and aerial bombardment.

The congressman who will lead Republican investigations if the takes back the House in 2022 is lining up and the 'Biden crime family' as one of the main targets.

Rep. James Comer, who is primed to take over as chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, says the president's son and his business associates have many questions to answer over his foreign deals and taxes.

He says the White House will also be pressed on whether the president knew about any of the transactions and believes American voters are now coming around to the fact the Hunter scandal isn't a 'conspiracy theory' and are questioning the administration's ethics and transparency.

Comer called Hunter a 'national security risk' and a 'grifter' who has built his 'business model' on 'selling access to his father', and believes see him as an issue leading up to the midterms.

Outgoing press secretary Jen Psaki has consistently denied Biden has spoken to his son about his business deals and has referred to the Department of Justice when asked about the investigation in Delaware into tax offenses, money laundering and illegal lobbying for foreign clients.

She has also declined to answer questions on the basis he doesn't work for the Biden administration.

The Republicans are currently the minority in Congress, but dismal polls and mounting issues for President Biden and the Democrats point to them taking back at least the House in the November midterm elections.

Comer and his colleagues are ready to get to work as soon as they take charge of the committees, and are lining up Hunter, his business partners and potentially staff in the administration.

In an interview with DailyMail.com in his Congressional office at the Rayburn Building, Comer said: 'The narrative all along has been that Hunter was on his own and Joe Biden had no interest or knowledge of anything that his son was doing with respect to business.

'I think what we're seeing now is that's completely not true.

Comer also said that they have been asking for Hunter's business partner Eric Scherwin to provide information on the business dealings and his visits to the White House while Joe was vice president.

White House records show Schwerin visited 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue 27 times during Barack Obama's administration in 2016.

Comer said he's heard nothing from Schwerin, but 'the more that we piece together the more it shows that there is a pattern. This is the Biden crime family.'

'Hunters dealings are with always with countries that don't like us and with energy and interests that would be counter to American interests.

'It's reflective in Joe Biden's policies to ban drilling in America and make it hard to get a permit to drill.
