House Subcommittee Drops a Bombshell: It Will Hold a Hearing Next Tuesday on U.S. Banks’ Role in Financing “the Horrors of Slavery”

The hearing set for next Tuesday at 2 p.m. by the House Financial Services’ Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations is certain to have brought all of the public relations flacks into a huddle at JPMorgan Chase – home to an unprecedented five felony counts and the Teflon guy, Jamie Dimon, who still manages to get good press despite overseeing a financial crime spree for 16 years while becoming a billionaire in the process. The hearing is titled: “An Enduring Legacy: The Role of Financial Institutions in the Horrors of Slavery and the Need for Atonement.” It is certain to look at the notorious, previously disclosed role of JPMorgan Chase’s predecessor banks.

In 2005, JPMorgan Chase was forced to acknowledge that two of its subsidiaries, Citizens’ Bank and Canal Bank in Louisiana, had accepted slaves as collateral for loans and when the holders of the loans defaulted, it actually took ownership of the slaves. The two subsidiary banks had served plantation owners from the 1830s to approximately 1865 when the civil war ended. JPMorgan Chase estimated that the two subsidiaries had accepted an estimated 13,000 slaves as collateral and had ended up owning about 1,250 slaves as a result of defaulted loans. The revelations from JPMorgan Chase came about as a result of an ordinance passed in Chicago in 2003 that required companies doing business with the city to research their history to determine any past ties to slavery. Wall Street banks were also involved in selling securities to finance the expansion of slave-run plantations in the southern United States. Alan Singer reported in 2017 at the Huffington Post that the predecessor bank to today’s Citigroup’s Citibank “was headed by a banker and sugar trader named Moses Taylor who was deeply involved in financing the illegal 19th century trans-Atlantic slave trade smuggling Africans into Cuba.”

While there is still much sunshine that needs to shine on Wall Street’s role in perpetuating slavery in the United States, New York City’s dismal role received more attention on June 27, 2015. On that date then New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio dedicated a memorial plaque at a site just two blocks from the New York Stock Exchange where thousands of enslaved men, women and children had been bought and sold at a Wall Street slave market that operated from 1711 to 1762. The plaque states in part: “Slavery was introduced to Manhattan in 1626. By the mid-18th century approximately one in five people living in New York City was enslaved and almost half of Manhattan households included at least one slave.” According to an article published in 2015 by the New York Public Library, “the slave market on Wall Street closed in 1762 but men, women, and children continued to be bought and sold throughout the city.” The article also reveals this shocking history about New York City: “By 1730, 42 percent of the population owned slaves, a higher percentage than in any other city in the country except Charleston, South Carolina. The enslaved population—which ranged between 15 and 20 percent of the total — literally built the city and was the engine that made its economy run.” Wall Street banks are still the last plantation in America. They run their own private justice system that locks claims out of the nation’s courts. (See Wall Street’s Kangaroo Courts Perpetuate a Business Model of Fraud.) Discrimination against minorities is still rampant on Wall Street. Stroll through any one of the major Wall Street brokerage offices – such as Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley – and you will observe a sea of white males sitting in the glass-paneled offices with women mostly relegated to clerical desks outside those offices. Black brokers, male or female, are still a rarity at Wall Street brokerage firms.

Let’s hope that these aspects of Wall Street also become part of the conversation at the hearing on April 5.

It was a busy day for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). First, he introduced the “Spook who cried wolf” resolution to strip security clearances from 51 intelligence officials who lied about Hunter’s Laptop, calling it Russian disinformation.

Next, Gaetz questioned the FBI’s Assistant Cyber Chief about the contents of the laptop, but the FBI’s Bryan A. Vorndran said he doesn’t know where Hunter’s laptop is. Vorndran said it was not in his job description to know about the laptop, nor can he identify who has the laptop or whether its contents reflect a point of national security vulnerability.

Add this to the list of lies our government continues to peddle.

Gaetz ended the exchange by offering up an external file with the laptop’s content, which he asked to enter into the congressional record. Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) at first refused, then later relented.

The FBI was given the actual laptop that Hunter abandoned at a repair shop three years ago.

Rep. Dan Bishop asked another good question: has the FBI has taken any new steps to prevent private contractors from intercepting data against political opponents–as the Clinton campaign did to Trump Tower, President Trump’s apartment, and the Trump White House?

Moscow seeks to reduce dependence on foreign tech in critical infrastructure

Russian President Vladimir Putin has passed an executive order banning the purchase of foreign software for use in critical infrastructure projects, in an apparent bid to make the country less vulnerable to further Western sanctions and potential cyberattacks.

Effective Thursday, the order allows for the purchase of foreign software for critical infrastructure purposes only if permitted by “a federal executive body duly authorized by the Government of the Russian Federation.” Additionally, any government body or customer must phase out the use of foreign software on their sensitive systems by no later than the start of 2025.

Regulators were ordered to release requirements for software that will be used in critical infrastructure within a month, along with the rules for coordinating the purchase of foreign software and related services for use on sensitive sites.

Putin’s executive order also seeks to prioritize the use of domestic radio, electronic and telecom-related tech over foreign equipment, with measures aimed at achieving this goal to be released within six months. A research and production association focused on manufacturing “trusted software and hardware systems for critical information infrastructure” is also supposed to be organized by the end of September at the latest

Lavrov: Russia, China Moving Towards Multipolar 'Fair World Order'

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Chinese counterpart on Wednesday, where he said the two are carving a path towards a 'fairer world order.'

The meeting between Lavrov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, marks the first visit to a key ally since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, according to The Economic Times.

The two countries will work to achieve "a multipolar, fair, and democratic world order," Lavrov said, speaking from the Chinese city of Tunxi located in the eastern inland Anhui Province.

In a video released by the Russian foreign ministry ahead of a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Lavrov said the world was "living through a very serious stage in the history of international relations".

At the end of this reshaping of global relations "we, together with you, and with our sympathisers will move towards a multipolar, just, democratic world order", Lavrov said. -Economic Times

Lavrov and Yi were seen on Chinese state TV in face masks bumping elbows in front of their national flags shortly before the meetings - which Lavrov will attend - to discuss ways to help Afghanistan.

Both the US and the Taliban are expected to be in attendance.

US officials have grown frustrated with Beijing's refusal to condemn the invasion of Ukraine, and have accused China of signalling a "willingness" to provide both economic and military aid to Russia.

According to Russia's state-owned TASS news agency, Wang said that despite "new challenges" to relations between China and Russia, "the will of both sides to develop bilateral relations has become even stronger."

Earlier this month Wang said that China's relationship with Russia is "one of the most crucial bilateral relationships in the world," and is "ironclad."

Just interviewed Cooper Beckett, host of the Life on the Swingset podcast, for next week's Savage Love and learned about an effort to create a hankie code of sorts for swingers—only it's a ring instead of hankies and there's just one color:

Q: How does the black ring work?

A: Wear your black ring on your right hand if you are out and open to meet other swingers. If someone wearing a black ring on their right hand approaches you, start a conversation with them. "I see you're wearing a black ring on your right hand. Maybe we are in the same club."

Q: Does it matter what finger I wear my black ring?

A: Wear your black ring on any finger but the middle one. The ring finger is the natural place for the black ring, but thumb rings are cool too. A black ring worn on the middle finger of the right hand is an infrequently used symbol of asexuality. Please avoid wearing your ring on this finger as a courtesy to that community. (See below.)

Q: Do I have to wear my black ring all the time?

A: No. Only when you want other swingers to recognize you.

"The black ring is a concept that's been gaining steam over the last couple years," Beckett told me. "It was first put forth by the Swap Fu podcast as a way to identify swingers in the wild. I'd love for it to take off, but I just haven't seen it."

I haven't seen any black rings out there either—but I haven't been looking for them, and, as I'm not a swinger, I'm not going to start. But here's something I am looking for now—a cite for a statistic at the end of the Swap Fu post about black rings:

"The number of swingers in the population is very low—less than 4 percent of the population identify themselves as swingers."

I'd really love to see a cite for that stat.

If true, it means there are more heterosexual swingers out there than there are gays and lesbians (if you accept the lower estimates of the size of the queer community). Religious conservatives are always harping on the bad example that gay married male couples supposedly set for married straight couples—because we married gays are less likely to be monogamous (married lesbians are more likely to be monogamous than gay or straight couples, so really, the monogamy issue should be a wash)—but they don't have much to say about married heterosexual swingers. They either deny that married het swingers exist at all, dismissing the whole swinging movement a 1970s/key party phenomenon, as dead and gone as pet rocks and EST, or they claim that there are too few straight married swingers out there for them to constitute a threat to "traditional" opposite-sex, totes-monogamous marriage.

But if there are actually more of them than there are of us then the failure of religious conservatives to take on heterosexual swingers is yet more evidence of their hypocrisy. As I've long said: We only hear that monogamy is a defining characteristic of marriage when same-sex couples want to marry—a defining characteristic along with the ability to make children and religion. Straight couples can do whatever they want: have children or not, get married in church or married at City Hall, be monogamous or swing, all without complaint from the same people who insist that gays shouldn't be able to marry because we're not good at monogamy (I like to think we're better at non-monogamy, thank you), can't make babies (just like infertile straight couples, elderly straight couples, and these two), and Jesus will puke all over everything.

So if religious conservatives are jumping up and down about nonmonogamous gay couples while ignoring more numerous nonmonogamous straight couples—if we're subjected to hate campaigns while swingers get a pass—then it's clear their issue isn't that gay people aren't good at monogamy.

For months, there have been many people sounding the alarm over the at-home Covid-19 rapid test, saying that the kits include toxic substances that pose health risks – something that has been widely condemned by the establishment as a wild conspiracy theory.

Well, just like with most everything else these days, the difference between wild right wing conspiracy and fact simply comes down to a matter of time.

Now, even public health officials can’t ignore the dangers posed by these tests.

Earlier this month, the Ohio Poison Control Center issued a nationwide warning about Covid-19 rapid antigen tests after toxicology experts found the kits include a dangerous and toxic substance that is used most commonly in car airbags and pest control chemicals.

The poisonous substance in these test kits is called Sodium Azide, which has a “high” acute toxicity and can be fatal to humans in cases of overexposure, according to Stanford Medical. The presence of this toxic substance was apparently only found by Poison Control researchers after the winter wave of Omicron, which saw many Americans testing at home with the kits.

Following this uptick in at-home testing, according to WHIO TV7, drug and poison centers across the country experienced a large increase in cases involving Sodium Azide, which prompted the Ohio Poison Control to issue their warning.

The liquid Sodium Azide is located within the extraction tube inside the kits and the substance is colorless tasteless and odorless.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital toxicologist Dr. Sheila Goertemoeller, who is a member of the Ohio Poison Control Center, spoke with WHIO7 about the agency’s decision to issue the nationwide warning. She explained that the other 54 Poison Centers in America have seen a similar upswing in Sodium Azide poisonings, amounting to “more than a couple hundred” across the country as of late.

Goertemoeller also admitted that her colleagues were “surprised” and “concerned” that such a highly toxic substance is being used in the test kits.

Nearly 60 million people have already received a free at-home Covid test from the Biden administration, most of which were passed out this winter, according to WHIO7 News.
