Biden Fed Vice Chair Nominee Successfully Lobbied For Former Employer

Sen. Pat Toomey has accused Sara Bloom Raskin, President Biden's nominee to replace Randall Quarles as the Fed's Vice Chair for Supervision, of helping an obscure fintech firm obtain an "unusual" degree of access to the Fed's payment system. Now, CNBC has corroborated Toomey's suspicions by confirming that Raskin did indeed lobby Kansas City Fed President Esther George in 2017.

Raskin placed the call to George with the intent to lobby for her employer, a small fintech firm called Reserve Trust, to receive a Fed "master account". The lobbying occurred during 2017, when Raskin had left her role as the Treasury Department's deputy secretary. Prior to her Treasury work, she spent more than three years at the Fed as one of its governors.

After initially denying RT's request for a master account, the Kansas City Fed approved the company's second request for an account in 2018 after Raskin called and lobbied for them with Quarles.

Earlier this week during Raskin's confirmation hearing before the Senate, Toomey blased Raskin with questions about her relationship with Reserve Trust. Specifically, Toomey asked Raskin to turn over documents and to answer a series of detailed questions regarding her work for Reserve Trust, including what actions she took to help it obtain a Fed master account and any communications between Raskin and the Kansas City Fed or the Fed regarding Reserve Trust’s application.

In a letter sent to the Kansas City Fed, Toomey claimed that George had told him about the call that Raskin had made in 2017.

"On the evening of February 2, 2022, you and your staff spoke with my staff," Toomey told George in his letter.

"On that you call, you revealed that Ms. Raskin had, in fact, personally called you about Reserve Trust’s master account application after it had been denied."

The letter from Toomey, the ranking member on the Senate Banking Committee, came more than a week after Raskin was grilled by Senate Republicans during her confirmation hearing to become the next Fed vice chair for supervision, replacing Randal Quarles.

Amazon Bars Unvaccinated Workers From Receiving Paid COVID Medical Leave

Amazon has decreed that any of its warehouse workers who refuse to accept the vaccine will also forfeit the right to paid time off should they ever be infected with the virus - even though being vaccinated has little impact on the transmission of the virus, as the omicron wave clearly demonstrated to millions of American workers.

The e-commerce giant has decided to allow workers in its "fulfillment centers" to finally go mask-less inside its giant warehouses, which by all accounts are stuffy, hostile work environments - but only as long as they are vaccinated. The company is changing its policy in response to the governors of at least 12 states lifting their own respective masking requirements.

Amazon's policy change was first reported by WSJ:

"There has been a sharp decline in Covid-19 cases across the country over the past weeks. Along with increasing vaccination rates across the country, this is a positive sign we can return to the path to normal operations," Amazon’s memo says.

Amazon employs about a million workers in the US, most at its hundreds of warehouses throughout the country. Some US companies have required all workers and guests at their facilities to get a COVID jab, including tech giants such as Microsoft and Facebook parent Meta Platforms. Amazon hasn’t mandated that its workers get vaccinated, though it has offered incentives for them to do so, such as bonuses.

Even WSJ acknowledged that the company's new policies surrounding vaccination and paid medical "has moved closer to an outright vaccine mandate" as the company navigates "disruptions" to its delivery operations.

Amazon has so far required employees to wear masks, practice social distancing, and undergo temperature checks as part of its effort to stop the spread of COVID. But even as omicron spread widely across the country last month, Amazon shortened its paid time off policies for both vaccinated and unvaccinated employees to just one week. Prior to the change, employees were given 10 days of paid time off - and before that, they were given two weeks.

The changes coincided with a labor crunch last year that fortunately for Amazon didn't intensify until after its peak holiday season had ended.

The anchor Tweet was simple: “Prepared for a #zombie apocalypse? If so, ur prepared for any emergency. Learn how: CDC PH Matters blog.” It went viral within 10 minutes. On just the first day, the Tweet, blog, and the web page had 200 million impressions. After a week, that number reached 3.3 billion. More importantly, people engaged in preparedness discussions on social media, and traffic to CDC’s Emergency Preparedness page increased 1,143% compared to the same date the previous year.

It was unconventional for a science-based organization to do something tongue in cheek, so what inspired this approach? Catherine Jamal, who lead the project, calls it “social media listening.” For one week, she and her team posted basic emergency preparedness facts on CDC’s Emergency Preparedness Twitter feed. Then they asked, “What are you preparing for?” And to their surprise, Jamal and her team noticed a trend in people listing the usual suspects – natural disasters, disease outbreaks, terror events—and a zombie apocalypse.

Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication is not just about feeding the public what you want to tell them. It’s also about listening to what they want to hear. Watching social media trends and engaging with your audience can help drive them to the important information you’re trying to communicate. CDC’s 2011 blog on Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse, and the zombie preparedness campaign that followed, brought readers to CDC’s Emergency Preparedness page at a time when the page was not getting a lot of traffic despite the valuable guidance included on how to prepare for any emergency. Humor would not normally be appropriate during an emergency, but—per the CERC rhythmCdc-pdf’s preparedness phase—effective emergencies start with good planning. In this case, our communication team realized that people were more interested in preparing for real-life emergencies if it also meant they’d be ready for a future (imaginary) zombie scare.

Manitoba to lift mask mandates, COVID-19 vaccine passports in March

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government plans to lift its COVID-19 restrictions by mid-March, easing them in stages starting next week, Premier Heather Stefanson said Friday.

The current 50 per cent capacity limits in restaurants, concert venues, cinemas, hockey arenas and other venues will be eliminated Tuesday. Caps on gatherings in people’s homes will also be removed at that time.

On March 1, people will no longer need to show proof of vaccination to enter public venues. Indoor mask requirements and all other restrictions are to end on March 15, with the possible exception of mask use in long-term care homes.

“It’s time for a new normal to begin in Manitoba,” Stefanson said. “We need to end the divisiveness between families, between communities. We need to move forward.”

The move comes as some health indicators point to the strain on health care easing. New COVID-19 hospital admissions have dropped and the number of people in intensive care is down from its most recent peak two weeks ago.
