Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby on Monday said 8,500 US troops are on “heightened alert” for possible deployment in case NATO activates its rapid-response force over Russia-Ukraine tensions.

No US troops have actually been deployed…yet.

“This is really about reassuring the eastern flank of NATO, and it’s also about…proving how seriously the United States takes our commitment to NATO and to the Article Five commitment inside NATO,” John Kirby said Monday.

He continued, “Secretary Austin has placed a range of units in the United States on a heightened preparedness to deploy, which increases our readiness to provide forces – if NATO should activate the NRF, or if other situations develop.”

Secretary Kirby confirmed the total number of US troops ready to deploy comes to about 8,500 personnel.

Omicron could usher in ‘stabilization, normalization’ of pandemic: WHO official

The Omicron variant could see the COVID-19 pandemic enter a new phase of “stabilization and normalization,” a top World Health Organization official said Monday.

Dr. Hans Kluge, head of WHO’s European region, said in a statement that, while countries should not yet let their guards down, Omicron offered plausible hope for a return to normalcy with continued vaccination and natural immunity.

He pointed to how the latest variant appeared to “cause much less severe disease” than Delta — even though Omicron is highly transmissible and has been driving up case counts globally.

“The pandemic is far from over, but I am hopeful we can end the emergency phase in 2022 and address other health threats that urgently require our attention,” he wrote.

Despite offering a glimmer of hope the pandemic could be nearing the end, Kluge lamented “huge disparities” in access to vaccines, arguing that countries with lower vaccination rates could allow the virus to adapt — and possibly lead to new variants.

“If 2021 was the year of vaccine production, 2022 must be the year of vaccine equity in the European Region and beyond,” Kluge said.

“Too many people who need the vaccine remain unvaccinated. This is helping to drive transmission, prolonging the pandemic and increasing the likelihood of new variants.”

He added that it was almost a given that new “variants will emerge and return” given the high number of current infections, waning immunity and winter seasonality.

But Kluge was hopeful a spike in vaccinations and strong surveillance would mean “a new wave could no longer require the return to pandemic-era, population-wide lockdowns or similar measures” seen over the last two years.

His comments came as WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus offered a less hopeful note, warning that conditions remained ideal for more variants to emerge.

He told a WHO executive board that it was dangerous to assume Omicron was the last variant or that “we are in the endgame” — but said the acute phase of the pandemic could potentially end this year if some key targets were met.

Wood — now an advocate for sexual assault and trafficking survivors — opened up on the alleged experience during "Phoenix Rising," a documentary that premiered over the weekend at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

The project focuses on Wood's life and career.

What are the details?

In the documentary, Wood, 34, said that the entertainer — whose real name is Brian Warner — "started penetrating [her] for real" during what was supposed to be a simulated sex scene for the 2007 music video.

"I had never agreed to that," Wood said, noting that she was plied with absinthe while on the set of the music video, which she called the most unprofessional she'd ever visited.

Wood — who would have been around 19 years old at the time of the alleged rape — qualified, "It was complete chaos [and] I did not feel safe. No one was looking after me."

"It [was] nothing like I thought it was going to be,” Wood said. “[We were] doing things that were not what was pitched to me. We had discussed a simulated sex scene, but once the cameras were rolling, he started penetrating me for real. I had never agreed to that. … It was complete chaos. I did not feel safe. No one was looking after me. It was a really traumatizing experience filming the video. I didn’t know how to advocate for myself or know how to say no because I had been conditioned and trained to never talk back — to just soldier through. I felt disgusting and that I had done something shameful[.]"

“I was coerced into a commercial sex act under false pretenses,” Wood added. “That’s when the first crime was committed against me. I was essentially raped on-camera.”

The crew, she added, was "very uncomfortable and nobody knew what to do."

A former crew member, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the documentary's production team that he believed that there were "some moments of actual intercourse" during the filming of the music video.

"The crew was very uncomfortable," the source said and noted that production shut down the scene after "a take or two."

“Everyone understood what kind of artist we were dealing with. But we’re not here to shoot an adult film,” the source added. “I’ve never encountered anything like that before or since in my career. It’s never real, ever. That’s something that only happens in the adult film industry.”

Eric Clapton claims people vaccinated against COVID-19 are under ‘hypnosis’

Eric Clapton’s career “had almost gone anyway” until his campaign against conventional medicine took off.

The 76-year-old musician went on the Real Music Observer YouTube channel to discuss how his life has changed since reluctantly taking AstraZeneca’s therapy in 2021. Clapton has since become outspoken about his anti-vaccination stance.

He claimed that he’d been duped into getting the COVID-19 jab by subliminal messaging in pharmaceutical advertising — and urged others not to fall for it.

“Whatever the memo was, it hadn’t reached me,” he said, referring to the “mass formation hypnosis” conspiracy theory, which gained traction in 2021 as part of anti-vaccine propaganda. (In related circles, it’s also been called “mass formation psychosis.”)

Credited to Belgian psychologist Mattias Desmet, the theory essentially points to a sort of mind control that has taken over society, allowing for unscrupulous leaders to easily manipulate populations into, for example, accepting vaccines or wearing face masks.

“Then I started to realize there was really a memo, and a guy, Mattias Desmet [professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium], talked about it,” Clapton continued. “And it’s great. The theory of mass formation hypnosis. And I could see it then. Once I kind of started to look for it, I saw it everywhere.”

Clapton recalled “seeing little things on YouTube which were like subliminal advertising,” he said.

The former Cream guitarist also talked about his efforts with fellow British songwriter Van Morrison to speak up on behalf of other artists against vaccine requirements.

“My career had almost gone anyway. At the point where I spoke out, it had been almost 18 months since I’d kind of been forcibly retired,” he said, as pandemic restrictions shut down live events for months.

“I joined forces with Van and I got the tip Van was standing up to the measures and I thought, ‘Why is nobody else doing this?’ … so I contacted him.”

He said Morrison, 76, complained that he wasn’t “allowed” to freely object to vaccine requirements.

“I was mystified, I seemed to be the only person that found it exciting or even appropriate. I’m cut from a cloth where if you tell me I can’t do something, I really want to know why,” the “Cocaine” singer said.

“My family and friends got scared, and I think they were scared on my behalf,” he added.

Clapton also admitted that he’d given up on recent news media, which he described as “one-way traffic about following orders and obedience” — a decision that he said has helped him creatively and professionally.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also joked about losing touch with friends and family over his political views: “My family and friends think I am a crackpot anyway.”

“Over the last year, there’s been a lot of disappearing — a lot of dust around, with people moving away quite quickly. It has, for me, refined the kind of friendship I have. And it’s dwindled down to the people that I obviously really need and love,” he said.

“Inside my family, that became quite pivotal,” he said, speaking of wife Melia McEnery and four daughters, Ruth, 37, Julie, 20, Ella, 19, and Sophie, 16. “I’ve got teenage girls, and an older girl who’s in her 30s — and they’ve all had to kind of give me leeway because I haven’t been able to convince any of them.”

Despite making headlines, others in the music community have alienated him, Clapton said. “I would try to reach out to fellow musicians and sometimes I just don’t hear from them,” he said. “My phone doesn’t ring very often. I don’t get that many texts and emails anymore.”

Meanwhile, Clapton has been known to throw his support behind other anti-vax activists, including donating more than $1,300 to a British rock group who were slapped with fines for breaching COVID-19 protocol during a show in 2021.

Aside from his work with the “Brown Eyed Girl” singer, Clapton also released the song “This Has Gotta Stop” last year, with a similar message: “I can’t take this BS any longer / It’s gone far enough / You want to claim my soul / you’ll have to come and break down this door.”

Georgia prosecutor granted special grand jury in Trump election probe

The grand jury requested by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will have the power to subpoena witnesses in an investigation that’s focusing on any “coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the outcome of the 2020 elections" in Georgia.

Christopher Brasher, chief judge of Fulton County Superior Court, granted the request on Monday, adding that it was "considered and approved by a majority" of the judges on the court. The special grand jury will begin on May 2 and continue for a period not to exceed 12 months, according to Brasher's order.

FDA to Sharply Restrict Use of Two Monoclonal Antibody Treatments

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will sharply restrict the use of two monoclonal antibody treatments according to a new report by the Washington Post.

According to WaPo, the Biden Administration is expected to halt distribution of monoclonal antibody treatments made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly because they are ‘ineffective against Omicron.’

The Washington Post reported:

The Food and Drug Administration is poised as soon as Monday to restrict two monoclonal antibodies, saying the covid-19 treatments should not be employed in any states because they are ineffective against the dominant omicron variant, according to two senior administration health officials.

As a result, the Biden administration will pause distribution of the therapies, manufactured by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly, to the states.

“We want to make sure that patients get treatments that are effective, not treatments that don’t work,” said one of the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

The FDA action will involve revising the emergency use authorizations for the monoclonal antibodies. The agency will not revoke the authorizations in case the treatments become useful against a future coronavirus variant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that more than 99 percent of current covid-19 cases are caused by omicron.

Biden administration officials noted that several therapies remain effective against omicron, including sotrovimab — a monoclonal antibody made by GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology — and antiviral pills by Pfizer and by Merck and its partner, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

In addition, the use of the antiviral drug remdesivir as an outpatient therapy recently got the green light from regulators. However, some of the treatments, including the Pfizer pill and sotrovimab, are experiencing supply shortages.

CDC Is Monitoring Local Residents for Cold-like Symptoms Following Crash of Semi Carrying 100 CDC Test Monkeys

A truck and trailer carrying about 100 monkeys collided with a dump truck Friday afternoon along Route 54 just off Interstate 80 near Danville, Pennsylvania.

Three monkeys escaped the crash. The monkeys were later reportedly “humanely euthanized.”
