“I’m not against vaccination. Everybody who wants to be vaccinated – fine,” a man attending the protest told Ruptly video agency. “I’m against forcing. There is no way that any human being can force anybody else [into] vaccination.”

Another protester said the government should not interfere in decisions regarding people’s own health. “In order to live in a free country, we have to let people decide for themselves about their medical conditions,” he said, adding that the Health Ministry must be more transparent and explain its recommendations better, instead of “hiding information.”

Police deployed mounted officers and water cannons to disperse a similar rally outside Bennett’s home on December 18. Several protesters claimed that officers whipped them, but police said they only used reins to control and restrain their horses.

This week, a Health Ministry expert panel recommended a fourth dose of the vaccine for those aged 60 and older and other vulnerable groups. Bennett said the measure will “help us overcome the Omicron wave that is spreading around the world.”

‘One of the greatest comeback stories’: Bone-breaking vulture back above Europe

Rome: They were known as “lamb killers” and “bone crunchers” – and it was even rumoured that they were able to snatch small children.

But after centuries of intense persecution, the bearded vulture, one of the world’s most imposing birds of prey with a wingspan of up to almost three metres, is staging a comeback across its former range in Europe.

The species was on the verge of extinction in the late 20th century.

It has been brought back from the brink with the help of a captive breeding programme, which has just clocked up one of its most successful years ever.

A total of 26 chicks were released into the wild at locations in the Alps, Andalusia in southern Spain and the Massif Central in France.

“We had a really good release season this year,” said José Tavares, the director of the Vulture Conservation Foundation. “We managed to release a really high number of birds.”

The species is surrounded by myth and legend.

In German, it is known as the lammergeier, meaning “lamb vulture”, from the long-held belief that it preyed on sheep.

In Spanish, it is called the quebrantahuesos, meaning “bone breaker”, a reference to its tactic of dropping animal bones from great heights to smash on rocks below, allowing it feed on the nutritious marrow inside.

The return of the bearded vulture has been hailed as one of the greatest wildlife comeback stories of recent times.

Back in the early 1980s, the species was struggling in Europe, with the population reduced to around 40 pairs that held out in remote parts of Crete, Corsica and the Pyrenees.

A captive breeding and reintroduction project was launched, with the first bearded vultures released in the Alps in 1986.

In 2006, vultures were reintroduced to the mountains of Andalusia, and four years later to the wild open spaces of the Massif Central.

In the next two to three years, a reintroduction project will be launched in Bulgaria.

“Across Europe there are now around 250 pairs,” said Tavares.

“It is a conservation project that has captured people’s imagination. The bearded vulture is an iconic species, a symbol of the high mountains.

“We can engage with farmers and foresters and hunters without finding the entrenched opposition that you have when you deal with animals like lynx and bears, wolves and golden eagles.”

As the species bounces back, it finds plenty of food to eat - populations of ibex and chamois, which were once under threat, are now at healthy levels, particularly in the Alps where they are now routinely seen by hikers and climbers.

In Italy, one of the places where the bearded vulture soars again is the Stelvio National Park, a vast wilderness area in the Alps.

A ranger at the national park visitor centre in the village of Valfurva explained how the vulture gets its distinctive russet-coloured neck feathers.

“The birds are attracted to springs and streams with a high content of iron oxide. They wash themselves in the water and their feathers become dyed red by the mud,” he said.

The vultures are also thriving in Spain, where conservationists just celebrated a record breeding season - 10 chicks hatched at a breeding centre in Andalusia.

A Chinese consulate in the United States has lodged a protest with an American airline after one of its China-bound flights returned to the US midway through the journey.

“Several China-bound flights have been delayed or canceled recently, with one plane returning to the US after flying half of the journey,” the Chinese consulate in San Francisco said in its Twitter-like WeChat account on Sunday.

“The consulate has lodged protests to the related airline.”

It also reminded travellers to China to monitor schedules for changes and ensure they had completed tests for boarding.

“The consulate will continue to urge US airlines to guarantee passengers’ legitimate rights and [travellers] not to travel to China unless necessary,” it said.

“Please choose airlines with caution to ensure smooth travel.”

The consulate did not name the airline but a 23-year-old Chinese film studies student, who would only identify herself as Runtu, said she was aboard Delta Air Lines flight DL287 to Shanghai on Wednesday when it returned to Seattle six hours into the journey.

The pilot said the aircraft had to return because “China’s entry policy has temporarily changed, and the health code of all persons on the flight cannot be authenticated”, she said.

Runtu said the flight from Seattle had already been delayed for a day. She said she was told that it was cancelled on Tuesday because there was a delay in take-off and the crew could not work overtime.

Delta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reason for the flight’s return.

China has adopted a zero-tolerance policy on Covid-19, and has rolled out even more stringent Covid-19 quarantine and border control rules to counter the threat of the Omicron variant, according to new measures announced on Monday.

An employee at Shanghai Pudong International Airport said the requirements for international flights remained unchanged in the past few days, and the cancellation of the Delta flight was not related to the airport.

“Other flights arrived normally that day, even some from the US,” the staff member said.

Seattle TV channel KIRO7 quoted Delta as saying that many of their cancellations were because of staffing shortages caused by the rise in Covid-19 cases, particularly the Omicron variant.

But it was not the case in this instance, according to the report.

“[The] cancellation of flight DL287 from Seattle to Shanghai is not related to the staff shortages from Covid-19 that is impacting hundreds of other flights across the country,” KIRO7 quoted an airline spokesman as saying, without elaborating.

Runtu said she was staying at a hotel arranged by the airline and was told that she might not be able to board another flight home until January 9.

She said there were a number of other Chinese students on the flight and they were concerned that re-entering the US could affect their visas.

They were also concerned about the need for further coronavirus tests to board rescheduled flights and whether their health codes to enter China would remain valid.

“I am just taking it one day at a time,” Runtu said.

Alongside pop memorabilia, there are all kinds of curiosities: a crystal ball from Salvador Dali, which is said to have belonged to Leonardo da Vinci; a model plane from the late Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi; and a golden egg, which John Lennon claimed came from aliens.

Rise to fame

A black-and-white photograph on the wall of the museum shows Geller's humble childhood home, not far away, in Tel Aviv.

He was born in 1946, in what was then British Mandate Palestine. He describes how at five years old, he bent his first spoon while eating a bowl of soup and was soon showing off his seemingly supernatural talents at school.

"Our teachers kind of freaked out," he says, grinning. "I could look at the clock on the wall and move it with the power of my mind."

Later, after a spell living in Cyprus where he learned English, Geller returned to Israel. He joined the Paratroopers' Brigade during his military service and fought in the 1967 Middle East War.

By his early 20s he was working as an entertainer. His acts - which he attributed to psychokinesis and telepathy - included bending spoons and keys, making clocks stop or run faster, and describing hidden drawings.

At a private event he impressed the then-Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir, whom he credits with his rise to national prominence.

Soon he was drawing the attention of international intelligence agencies.

"As a result of Geller's success in this experimental period, we consider that he has demonstrated his paranormal perceptual ability in a convincing and unambiguous manner," states a contemporary CIA report which Geller proudly displays on the wall.

Bouncing back

But not all were so easily convinced. Back in 1973, soon after he launched himself in the US, Geller suffered a crushing humiliation on a hugely popular programme, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

The host had prepared a table with silverware - which Geller proved unable to bend with his mental powers, something he blamed on the hostile atmosphere.

"I thought: 'I'm finished,'" Geller remembers. "I went back to my hotel and started packing to return to Israel because that was it. I was destroyed."

However, early the next morning a rival of Carson was on the phone asking him to appear on his TV show. The experience served as a lesson for the "psychic" who has since been subjected to many more set-ups - but says he has learned to embrace his critics.

"There's so much controversy around me: is it real or not? Is it a trick?" he reflects.

"I have to go with what Oscar Wilde said: 'There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.'"

However, he is frank about the toll that working in showbusiness can have.

"I was on such an ego trip that I became bulimic and had anorexia nervosa," Geller says, looking back to the decade he spent in New York. "I couldn't take being in the limelight, the pressure and the sceptics."

He believes spending a year in Japan with his family helped turn his life around. Later, they moved to the UK, living in the quiet Berkshire village of Sonning-on-Thames for some 35 years.

Our fast-paced museum tour involves bewildering name-dropping. Geller first explains how he is a distant relative of the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, through his mother.

Many of the 2,600 shining spoons stuck to a Cadillac once belonged to historic figures or celebrities from Winston Churchill to John F Kennedy and James Dean.

There are Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves; a football top belonging to Diego Maradona; and many gifts from the surrealist artist Dali, who was a mentor of Geller's and encouraged him in his own artistic pursuits.

The model aircraft sent to Geller by Gaddafi after they met in New York had a sinister message. It is a replica of a Libyan Arab Airlines plane downed by the Israeli air force in 1973; the psychic believes the leader saw him as a channel to convey his anger to Israel.

Several items dating to the '80s and '90s belonged to Michael Jackson, who was then a close friend of the entertainer.

Some visitors whom I speak to question the decision to show these, given new allegations of sex abuse which have been made since the pop star's death. However, Geller maintains the singer's innocence.

'No-one like me'

It was six years ago that Geller returned to Israel with his wife, Hanna. Their grown-up children now live in London and Los Angeles.

"In every Israeli's heart, there's a kind of spiritual, burning desire to come back to their homeland," he says. "For me, it was massively important."

Much of his personal wealth comes from dowsing for oil and mineral companies, as well as entertainment, but he does not think of retirement.

He remains a favourite of the British press. A perusal of recent headlines has him predicting football scores; threatening to stop Brexit; and taking credit for moving a cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal using telepathy.

The idea of creating the museum in a former Ottoman-era soap factory came about after a chance encounter with a real estate agent, who showed him the empty property in Old Jaffa.

"I just immediately knew that everything I had in Sonning-on-Thames, I was going to bring here," Geller tells me. "I guess I'm a hoarder. I didn't even know I had so much stuff. It was strewn all over my house. It was stored in sheds, in suitcases."

With walls plastered with posters and personal tours - complete with a spoon-bending demonstration and Geller's own recorded rendition of the song My Way - it has turned into a memorable showcase for a unique character.

"I'm so pleased and satisfied when visitors leave, I just ask them: 'Did you enjoy it?' Everyone says: 'Wow! It was amazing,'" says Geller with his contagious smile.

"It is an unusual museum," he exclaims. "You won't find anything like it anywhere around the world and you won't find a guide anywhere like me!"

A former Boston College student who prosecutors say drove her boyfriend to take his own life with thousands of text messages pleaded guilty on Thursday to involuntary manslaughter.

Under terms of a plea deal, Inyoung You, 23, received a two-and-a-half year suspended jail sentence and 10 years of probation and was barred by a judge in Suffolk Superior Court from profiting from her case in any way. The sentence means You can avoid time behind bars if she adheres to all the terms of her probation, which includes continued mental health treatment and community service.

Prosecutors said You sent Alexander Urtula, 22, of Cedar Grove, New Jersey, 47,000 messages in the last two months of their relationship, including many urging him to “go kill yourself”. Urtula died in Boston in May 2019, the day of his Boston College graduation.

The investigation described You and Urtula’s 18-month-long relationship as “tumultuous, dysfunctional, and unhealthy”, and found You “engaged in deeply disturbing and at times relentless verbally, physically and psychologically abusive behaviour toward Mr Urtula”, according to a statement from the office of Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins released after Thursday’s hearing.

Those actions intensified in the days and hours before Urtula’s death, the office said.

You, who was born in South Korea and is a naturalised US citizen, “repeatedly told the victim that he should kill himself or die and waged a campaign of abuse that stripped the victim of his free will,” the office said.

“Words matter,” Rollins said in the statement. “Demeaning language, ridicule and verbal abuse can deeply impact people.”

The plea deal was reached in consultation with the Urtula family, Rollins said.

The family in a statement read in court described driving to Boston for a day of celebration and instead finding themselves planning a funeral.

“We bear no feelings of anger or reprisal. We believe that time will take us through in the moments we mourn and celebrate his life,” the family said.

Before her arraignment in November 2019 when she originally pleaded not guilty, You, through a public relations firm, released some of the text messages suggesting she tried to stop Urtula and alerted Urtula’s brother in the moments before his death.

You was given the opportunity to speak in court, but declined. Her lawyer said she was “very distraught”.

Lawyer Steven Kim said You is a “wonderful young woman who has deep, deep remorse”.

The case was compared to that of Michelle Carter, who garnered headlines in the US and an HBO film. The young Massachusetts woman was sentenced to 15 months in jail after she was convicted in 2017 of involuntary manslaughter for using text messages and phone calls to encourage her boyfriend, Conrad Roy, to kill himself in 2014. Her lawyer argued that her messages were protected free speech.

Israeli ministers asked to test for virus as COVID cases soar

The requirement is a first for cabinet meetings in Israel since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Israeli ministers were required to take rapid antigen COVID-19 tests ahead of the weekly cabinet meeting in order to ensure that they were not carrying the virus.

This is the first time all ministers, even if fully vaccinated, have been asked to test. The move comes as COVID cases, including Omicron cases, have been spiking.

There were 760 people diagnosed with COVID on Shabbat, the Health Ministry reported Sunday morning. However, the lower number is only because of a decline in testing over the weekend, as more than 2% of the people screened tested positive.

The number of active cases has continued to rise, reaching close to 12,000 by Sunday morning. Moreover, serious cases have spiked to 98.

On December 12, two weeks ago, there were only two new severe cases. On December 19, last Sunday, there were six. Today, the Health Ministry reported an additional nine new cases.

There are more than 1,100 Omicron cases already diagnosed in Israel, the minister reported Saturday night.

“We are no longer at the beginning of the wave, but in its midst,” said MK Gilad Kariv, chair of the Knesset’s Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, on Sunday.

Sunday’s cabinet meeting is taking place in the Golan Heights, rather than in Jerusalem as usual, as ministers intend to pass a plan to encourage and promote growth in the region.

The ministers will also discuss a plan to infuse an additional NIS 150 million into the country’s tourism ministry as the skies remain closed in an effort to ward off Omicron. The aid package is expected to pass.

The IRGC account, with its 12,100 followers, posted a video showing multiple explosions in a desert. “Then on the day, we [God] will deal you the fiercest blow. The account provides a link to the IRGC’s Telegram account, with its 376,084 subscribers. Both the IRGC Twitter account and Telegram account show the IRGC logo—an arm raised while clutching a rifle.

The IRGC Arabic account only follows the Farsi language Twitter account of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as well as a backup account for IRGC Arabic.

A December 13 tweet from the IRGC account reads: "In the event of foolishness on the part of the Zionist regime, the Islamic Republic of Iran is no longer ready to destroy Tel Aviv and Haifa, but to liberate holy Quds. If the security of the holy land of Iran is compromised, no one will taste the moment of security, whether those who are at 1,000 km or at 10,000 km.“

Quds is the Arabic name for the capital of Israel, Jerusalem.

Sheina Vojoudi, an Iranian dissident who fled the Islamic Republic due to repression and who closely tracks Iranian regime social media activity told The Jerusalem Post that “An army is supposed to protect and defend the people and the soil of its country but I dont see any sign of my country in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, no name of Iran or the Iranian people is even mentioned in it.

"The Persian term Sepah-e Pasdaran has a great value and has its root in ancient Persian but the IRGC ruined it. The London-based Iran International news channel tweeted on Friday: "The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency says the Revolutionary Guards have simulated missile strikes against Israel's Dimona nuclear facility in the 'Great Prophet 17' military exercises."

The Post reported last week that an Arabic language Twitter account of the Islamic Republic of Iran published an image on December 17 that showed the planned burned elimination of the Jewish state in 2022.

The picture shows Israel composed of nails and matches and a book of matches next to words in Hebrew and English declaring: “Just try and you will see.”

The book of matches, which is situated next to Israel in the image, says “Ballistic matchstick” and shows an Iranian regime flag on it. The apparent message is that the clerical regime is prepared to detonate the matches to destroy Israel in 2022.

In late November, the spokesman for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed forces, Brig.-Gen. Abolfazl Shekarchi, urged the total elimination of the Jewish state during an interview with an Iranian regime-controlled media outlet.

"We will not back off from the annihilation of Israel, even one millimeter. We want to destroy Zionism in the world,” Shekarchi told the Iranian Students News Agency.

On December 15 the Tehran Times wrote on its front page “One wrong move,” with military targets listed within Israel.

‘I want to kill my first Jew,’ London attacker tells Jewish victim

While desecrating a Menorah this Hanukkah, a London man attacked a local Jewish man, yelling "You are Jewish. I am going to kill you."

A Jewish man was violently attacked by a man carrying what appeared to be a knife in an antisemitic attack in West Hampstead, North London on December 2nd, according to antisemitic watchdog Antisemitism.org.

According to the police report, the victim saw the alleged attacker desecrating a Menorah on West Hampstead Square, pulling it down before proceeding to stamp on it and shout antisemitic abuse. The attacker, described as between 25-to-30-years-old, approached the victim and aggressively said, “You look Jewish.”

“Are you Jewish?” the attacker asked. The victim said “No,” to which the man replied, “Good, I want to find a Jew to kill.” The victim then entered a nearby supermarket and called the police, who said they did not consider the case to be an urgent matter before promising to respond an hour later.

The attacker then continued pulling down the Menorah and harassing local residents in the neighborhood, which has a sizable Jewish population. The victim and a supermarket employee then confronted the attacker as he threatened a young woman, which led the attacker to re-focus his attention on the man. “I knew you were Jewish, you lied to me… You are Jewish. I am going to kill you,” the attacker yelled as he approached the man. He then said something in Arabic before allegedly declaring “I want to kill my first Jew.”

The attacker then chased the victim into the supermarket and pushed the victim as hard as he could with both hands on the victim’s chest, forcing the victim to take a step backward – all the while the same ominous line: “You are Jewish. I am going to kill you.” The attacker then viciously punched the victim several times in the head, shouting Arabic phrases and at one point saying “I am not going away until you are dead.”

As the victim finally began to run away, dropping his hat and heavy coat that was slowing him down, the attacker revealed a knife and allegedly said “I will kill you now, you Jew,” before making a throat-slitting gesture at the fleeing man and taking his hat and coat, which he left at the scene. None of the contents of the bag or jacket had been taken.

“What this victim has suffered is unspeakable, and it is only thanks to his quick thinking that he survived the ordeal without even worse injury than he endured. The delayed response of the police, despite the close proximity of a police station just up the road, is deeply concerning, and the result is that a man who apparently wants to kill Jews is now at liberty,” said Stephen Silverman, Director of Investigations and Enforcement at Campaign Against Antisemitism.

“This is the most heinous of a considerable number of antisemitic crimes that we have reported over the course of Chanukah. The sad truth is that our nation’s capital is not nearly as safe as it should be for Jewish people who wish to celebrate a festival or, in this case, simply go about their daily lives. Unless the police and the justice system step up and ensure that antisemitic criminals face the full consequences of their despicable actions, this will not change,” Silverman continued.

After the incident ended, the police were again called and finally responded to the incident. After the police inaction – amplified by the fact that the police station was only half a mile away – the victim called the “Community Security Trust” (CST), a British charity whose purpose is to provide safety, security, and advice to the Jewish community in the UK.

The assailant remains at large, per police. “Officers have carried out a number of inquiries and have today released a CCTV image of a man they need to speak with. Anyone who recognizes the man is asked to call police via 101 or tweet @MetCC,” Metropolitan Police said.

Hybrid happiness: Managing organizational happiness in the new reality

In recent years, organizations are realizing, more profoundly than ever, that human capital is their most precious resource.

This understanding, and the panic it aroused, have become routine topics in the daily media: the difficulties involved in recruitment and the benefits various companies offer their employees.

As it befits the new reality of the labor market, the work environment has changed considerably in terms of physical locations and work output. Whatever the specific changes occurring in each company, human resources departments are forced to reinvent themselves to respond effectively to the new situation.

Since the outbreak of the COVID pandemic and the immediate changes it triggered in the work market, we, the managers, and the HR departments have been dealing extensively with the advantages we can offer existing and potential employees. These advantages amount to much more than traditional benefits. For example, at BUYME, the company that coined the concept of “organizational happiness,” we chose to focus on the daily routine of our employees and the challenges that affect their work-life balance. We uncovered three central challenges: working from the office, adverse impact on employee creativity and family happiness.

The office

Arriving at the office every morning is no longer the routine. Research commissioned by Cisco at the end of last year found that nine out of 10 employees would prefer combining work from the home and office after the pandemic ends. In addition, five out of 10 employees would prefer to continue working full time from home.

The organizational happiness administrations now face a new responsibility of making the office a desirable place for employees so that more of them would choose to come there every day. To this end, the company needs to create an enjoyable work environment through happy hours, workers’ activities and workshops and other value-adding propositions in the office.

Happy hours will be with us for the long term. However, they are not meant only to indulge employees before going for the weekend. Instead, they create personal connection and social "magic" at the workplace. Changes in work methods and COVID made happy hours even more critical for employees’ well-being since they create personal and friendly bonds between employees.

Employee creativity

Employee creativity is an essential element in every organization. Many HR and organizational happiness managers stress that working from home inevitably leads to decreased interaction between employees and compromised creativity. A recent MIT research year demonstrated that creative deliverables correlate directly with joint working time employees spend together.

Hence, happiness administrations should conceive solutions for producing and preserving employee interaction. Creativity is critical for success in Israel’s thriving tech industry, which bears the title of "Start-Up Nation." Organizing work peers’ gatherings in the company’s offices or off-site is one way of sparking collaborations and encouraging cross-fertilization, resulting in increased employee creativity.

The family happiness

The COVID pandemic proved that the hybrid work model is not a fleeting trend. Instead, it is a stage in the organizational evolution, at the least because an increased number of employees seek to combine working from home and the office. Moreover, they regard this model as a prerequisite for their continued work in that organization.

The third challenge posed by the new reality is the understanding that organizational happiness does not hinge only on employee happiness. Since the work environment turned hybrid, families are far more influenced by the parents’ workplace than before. The children and spouses spend a longer time near the employee working from home.

Children watch their parents working and are influenced by their work.

In other words, families have become another target audience of the organization. Whereas previously, happiness administrations organized happy hours for employees only, they now need to organize "happy meals" as an element the whole family can enjoy at home.

China's tallest rocket deploys two satellites

The launch of a modified Long March 7A carrier rocket on Thursday that sent two experimental satellites into space marked the debut mission of China's tallest rocket.

The 60.7-meter-tall rocket blasted off at 6:12 pm from a coastal launch tower at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province before placing the Shiyan 12-01 and 12-02 satellites into their orbits, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, the nation's major space contractor, said.

Developed by the company's China Academy of Space Technology in Beijing, the two satellites-whose name translates as experiment-are tasked with surveying the spatial environment and conducting related technological tests, the State-owned enterprise said in a brief statement issued after the launch.

It was the first time China has used one rocket to deploy two large satellites to high-altitude orbits. To make the flight possible, engineers at the company's China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology in Beijing used a new fairing-the top structure on a rocket that contains satellites or other payloads-that was higher than those on the two previously launched Long March 7As, said Wei Yuanming, a chief designer of Long March 7A.

The original version of the Long March 7A is 60.1 meters tall, about 1.8 meters taller than the second-tallest Chinese rocket-the Long March 2F.

Pang Zhihao, a space industry observer in Beijing, said that extending the length of a rocket is not easy because engineers are then required to make many related modifications to the rocket.

The first Long March 7A was launched in March last year but the flight failed due to technical malfunctions. The rocket conducted its second mission in March this year, successfully deploying the New Technology Demonstrator 9 experimental satellite into orbit.

According to designers, the Long March 7A has a liftoff weight of 573 metric tons and a core-stage diameter of 3.35 meters. It is capable of placing a 7-ton spacecraft into geosynchronous transfer orbit.

Thursday's flight also marked this year's 45th liftoff of the Long March rocket family, which is the pillar of China's space programs. All of the Long March rocket launches this year have been successful.

China has carried out more space missions than any other spacefaring nation this year, with 52 orbital launches.

The embryo fossil was discovered in rocks in Ganzhou, Jiangxi province, around the year 2000 and is housed in the Yingliang Stone Nature History Museum in Fujian province, where it was dubbed "Baby Yingliang".

Estimated to be 27 centimeters from head to tail, the creature lies inside a 17-cm-long egg. Paleontologists believe it belongs to a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur, dating back 72 to 66 million years, within the Cretaceous Period.

The posture of the embryo within the egg implies that these dinosaurs developed birdlike postures close to hatching, according to the study published in the journal iScience on Wednesday.

Scientists from China, Britain and Canada who worked on the study found the posture of "Baby Yingliang" unique among known dinosaur embryos-its head lies below the body, with the feet on either side and the back curled along the blunt end of the egg. Previously unrecognized in dinosaurs, this posture is similar to that of modern bird embryos.

Before hatching, birds are known to develop a series of tucking postures, bending their body and extending their head under their wings. Embryos that fail to attain such postures have a higher chance of death due to unsuccessful hatching.

By comparing "Baby Yingliang" with the embryos of other dinosaurs and birds, the research team proposed that such prehatching behavior, which was previously thought unique to birds, evolved in theropod dinosaurs tens or hundreds of millions of years ago.

Fion Waisum Ma, joint first author and PhD researcher at the University of Birmingham, said the dinosaur embryo study could help bolster people's understanding of dinosaur growth and reproduction.

"It is interesting to see this dinosaur embryo and a chicken embryo pose in a similar way inside the egg, which possibly indicates similar prehatching behaviors," Ma added.

Steve Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh, who is part of the research team, said this little prenatal dinosaur looks just like a baby bird curled up in its egg, providing yet "more evidence that many features of today's birds first evolved in their dinosaur ancestors".

Dinosaur embryos are some of the rarest fossils. To further test the hypothesis, more embryo fossil discoveries are needed, said coauthor Xing Lida, professor at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing.

SEOUL INTRODUCES SELF-DRIVING TAXIS

Last year the Seoul city government passed an ordinance enabling the commercial operation of autonomous passenger-carrying vehicles. A six square kilometer region in the Seoul neighborhood of Sangam, near the 2002 World Cup Stadium, was designated as a pilot program test bed. This area encompasses 24 streets totaling 31.3 km. Two companies were selected, and the pilot program launched a few weeks ago. Currently there are three vehicles and passengers can ride for free during this introductory phase. Three more taxis and a bus will be added within this year, with plans for 50 in this region by 2026. For the time being, these cars require a standby driver who takes control in an emergency and in school zones. Check out the short news report (in English) below the break.

ITV announces death of Pope in Christmas blunder

ITV News presenter Kylie Pentelow mistakenly announced the death of 85-year-old Pope Francis during a segment on his Christmas Day address.

“The Pope’s festive address focused on his prayers for the pandemic to come to an end. He said vaccines should be made available to those most in need,” Pentelow reported on Saturday evening, before adding, “His death was announced… uh, excuse me.”

A camera pan to Pentelow showed the presenter looking very uncomfortable as the segment moved on.

The mistake was ridiculed on social media, though it was also met with understanding. BBC broadcaster Scott Bryan tweeted, “Someone get this newsreader a drink STAT. We all make mistakes.”

“Spare a thought for everyone working the Christmas shift today,” another person wrote, while one former broadcaster revealed what may have been the source of the slip-up.

“When I worked at ITN news we had to do practice runs for announcing the Queen’s death,” she said. “We had all the right obits ready but all the names were replaced with Mrs Brown to avoid mistakes like this.”
