For comparison, over the past five years, about 15,000 prescriptions were made each month in the UK for midazolam to be used outside of hospital, whereas in April, a staggering 38,582 prescriptions were made.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said that the request for the extra stock was part of “national efforts to respond to the coronavirus outbreak”, including precautions “to reduce the likelihood of future shortages.”

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has labelled midazolam a “first-line” sedative when treating COVID-19 patients and has warned in guidance published on 2 April 2020 that it may be subject to demand pressure as a result of the pandemic.

In April, Matt Hancock told the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee that intensive therapy unit medicines – including midazolam – are part of a “delicate supply chain” because they “are made in a relatively small number of factories around the world.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Police are investigating after shots were fired outside the Walmart in the Waterworks Shopping Plaza, authorities said.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said a vehicle was shot up in the parking lot on Tuesday, but no one was injured. There was a person in the backseat who was waiting for a relative inside the store, Hissrich said.

“How he escaped is what I would consider a miracle,” Hissrich said.

Officials said the person in the vehicle had no connection to the suspects in this incident.

The Public Safety director said four suspects were involved. He said the four were inside the store, came outside to the parking lot, and that is when the shooting happened.

He said three fled the scene and one was thought to be inside the store. A tactical team cleared the Walmart, and no suspects were found, authorities said.

Officials believe some of the suspects got away in a vehicle. Police have not provided a description of the suspects.

“We think the shooting was the result of a domestic situation,” Hissrich said. “However, we have no suspects.”

A witness told KDKA’s Jennifer Borrasso over the phone that she heard gunshots at around 5:30 p.m. after she saw two men arguing outside the store.

The witness said that is when the store started evacuating customers.

“It was like clap, clap, clap, it was like cement bags hitting a marble floor,” another witness, Chuck Foster, said.

“It was commotion before that, and then clearly loud pops,” he added.

More than 100 shoppers and dozens of employees were ushered to a restaurant across the street while law enforcement cleared the scene.

“We heard a commotion and it was the staff yelling for everybody to immediately get out of the store,” customer Kevin Dumas said.

A Walmart employee who did not want to be identified told KDKA he was working inside and was alerted by his manager that, “There’s an active shooter.”

He said the shooting incident was something he and his coworkers were more than prepared for. The employee said they had active shooting training in the past.

“We hear about it a lot. We see and watch the tapes. We’re prepared to do it, and everybody was organized,” the employee said.

Once officers cleared the scene, the store was closed for the evening, and workers were sent home.

Public Safety said the investigation has been turned over to the Crime Scene Unit.

Denmark study confirms rare heart risk from Moderna jab

The Moderna Covid jab carries a slight risk of usually non-serious heart problems a study of the entire population of Denmark found Friday.

Incidences of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart) after mRNA jabs from Pfizer and Moderna had been noted in vaccine safety reports and small-scale studies.

These reports led France, Denmark and other countries to advise against the jab for people under 30 years old.

"Vaccination with mRNA-1273 (Moderna) was associated with a significantly increased rate of myocarditis or myopericarditis, especially among individuals aged 12-39 years," the study said.

It said that vaccination with Pfizer was only associated with an increased risk among women.

The study published in the BMJ medical journal is the first to look at these side effects in an entire population.

While it confirms the risks, it insists they are slight and that the risks posed by Covid infection are greater.

It noted that among the vaccinated who developed myocarditis or pericarditis "only a few" had severe outcomes.

In the case of the 21 people diagnosed with the conditions after receiving Moderna, over half were released from the hospital within 72 hours and none died or were diagnosed with heart failure.

"Our finding of a low absolute risk of myocarditis or myopericarditis with BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccination supports the overall benefits of such vaccination on an individual, societal, and global level," the study concluded.

Record-breaking winds tore through the United States on Wednesday and early Thursday, causing the highest number of hurricane-force gusts in a single 24-hour period since at least 2004, the National Weather Service said, days after one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history.

More than 61 gusts of above 75 miles per hour (121 km per hour) were recorded across a number of mostly Midwestern states from 6 a.m. CST to 6 a.m. CST on Thursday, according to the weather service's Storm Prediction Center. The Norman, Oklahoma-based center also recorded 19 tornadoes.

"It's certainly an unprecedented event," said meteorologist Matt Elliot, who coordinates weather warnings for the center.

Previously, in data going back to 2004, the most hurricane-force gusts in a single day was 53 on Aug. 10, 2020, Elliot said. Colleagues were collating data from earlier than 2004, and expected the record to hold, he said.

Wednesday's severe weather caused multiple power outages and disruption at Kansas City International Airport in Missouri, as well as reports of wildfires. More than 450,000 homes and businesses were without power in the affected states as of Thursday afternoon, according to the tracking website PowerOutage.

I understand that Abraham Lincoln is America's favorite person and I can kind of see why historians would toe the mythology line for him, so what I'm going to say may seem treasonous to some people. But out of respect for Honest Abe, I'm going to clear some things up.

When Abraham Lincoln was declared the winner of the 1860 American Presidential election, his political managers suggested that he make the most of his trip to the Capitol by taking a tortuous tour of the Northern states by rail, stopping at all the major and middling cities to give speeches and shake hands at various junkets and jamborees along the way.

One thing that was odd was that after Lincoln's train had left Cincinnati, people along the route began having difficulty determining which of the passengers on the train was supposed to be the President. At many of the stops, however, the crowds weren't given a chance to hazard a guess. Citing a pressing schedule and the President's ill health, the train cruised on through without so much as a Presidential bow from the caboose landing.

There was more excitement to come. The most famous incident of the trip occurred in Philadelphia on February 21, 1861. Here the Presidential party was apprised by a couple of messengers of a probable assassination attempt planned to take place in Baltimore, just two stops ahead. These warnings were brought to the President-elect separately, and apparently through separate channels, by Allan Pinkerton and Frederick Seward (son of Lincoln's incoming Secretary of State WIlliam Seward) the latter intelligence having a stamp of endorsement from the country's top military commander, General Winfield Scott.

Lincoln was reluctant to alter his plans (according to the narrative) but at length agreed to sneak away from the official inauguration train at Harrisburg, (the stop preceding Baltimore) double back to Philadelphia with Pinkerton and a friend from Illinois named Ward Hill Lamon and then take the night train to Washington DC from Philadelphia, arriving at their destination several hours earlier than the rest of the party who had spent the night in Harrisburg.

The only person in Washington that was alerted by Pinkerton to the incoming President's adjusted schedule was congressman Elihu Washburne. Upon arriving, the small contingent escorting the President made its way through the station to the reception committee of one. As they passed under the gas lamps, Washburne got a close look at the new President. "You can't play this on me!" the congressman said.

Pinkerton wrote a report of the whole episode but used aliases to conceal the names of his agents and many of the alleged conspirators. Among the aliases can be found the following names: "William H. Scott," "Harry Hemling," "Joseph Howard," and "O.K. Hillard." Coincidentally, the Commanding General of the United States Army, as mentioned above, was at that time Winfield Scott, and Abraham Lincoln's Vice President-to-be, also on the train, was Hannibal Hamlin. The two journalists traveling on the inauguration train with the Lincoln family were Joe Howard and Henry Villard. Joe Howard, you might remember (or not) was the instigator of a notorious Civil War news "hoax," in which a forged proclamation from the President (reporting supposed military setbacks and ordering another draft) was sent to newspapers on stolen Associated Press copysheets. Howard got in some trouble then for impersonating the President.

At any rate, in order to put the issue on a more objective footing, I made use of AI-based identity analysis software to look at the photographs. For this test I submitted a pair of putative Abraham Lincoln photos (above, left) and a pair comprising a photo of Abraham Lincoln and one of Morrissey (above, right). The computed likelihood of the pair's depicting the same person is registered as a decimal percentage. In light of the computer's verdict, we see that both the traditional story of Abraham Lincoln and the Morrissey-is-Abraham-Lincoln conspiracy theory appear to be on shaky ground.

Owing to the vicissitudes of war and the incessant palace intrigues inflicted on the White House from every direction, many were called to play, just as others insisted on playing, the role of the President. However, the various Presidential doubles were not always unified in terms of policy or philosophy.

Things took a dark turn in the autumn of 1862. By December of that year, the President had personally made, since July, more than 800 questionable and, let's say… "highly tendentious"…appointments throughout the administration, not including the favors he had been calling in by the dozens at West Point for the friends and family of the new coterie settled around him at the White House.

This was the same President that tried to create a new holiday on April 30 devoted to "National Humiliation" and demanded that the Senate publish a book expressing the country's sympathy for communism. In August of 1863, however, the administration was taking a different tack, and appointed the sixth of the month as a national day of celebration.

In order to preserve the confidence of the nation, the ruse had to be carried out through the end of the war. Earlier, when the war was expected to be won easily (or at least scheduled to end sooner), it was given out that Lincoln would not seek re-election. But the war lingered on. Lincoln was re-elected. A month after the second inauguration, the war was over. Now, after Lee's surrender, the event of the President's unexpected death would serve as a solemn benediction to the conflict rather than a blow to morale. And besides, it would now have the effect of rendering the terms of peace politically irreversible.

The timing really worked out in another way too. The assassination of Lincoln occurred on Good Friday and his body was laid in state on Easter. Surely you are dazzled by the sophisticated form of wickedness evinced in this novel scheme! No?
