With all this sudden internet censorship, I'm re-energized to create my own website for posting news, articles, and videos of 8chan type material.

What's a good web-hosting and website builder to use, that isn't too expensive? Assuming the mainstream ones are not good.

It might be wise to look into who hosts parler.com and gab.com or discord or 8kun. Whoever is hosting them is likely to be sympathetic to free speech. But I guess we'll have to wait a week to find out where parler.com finds its next home after their amazon server ban today. But do we know anything about gab? I would search it myself, but I'm not good with the web hosting vocabulary.

Whether you agree or not, I support holocaust revisionism, and so I need a free speech web-hosting that won't slowly clamp down on that type of thing.

Been thinking the same thing, Anon.

Big advice: Do not go with Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, etc. You do not own your site with these folks. They can shut you down at will, just like we're seeing right now. And, even if you decide to move, you cannot just pack up and move along; you are tied in to their platforms.

I use WordPress for myself and for my clients. You can export the entire site and reinstall it on another host if you ever need to pick up and move. (I've done this.) Note that WordPress.org (open-source website solution) is not the same as WordPress.com (a web host that leverages WordPress but ties your hands behind your back in terms of themes, plugins, etc. you're allowed to use). If I recall correctly, late last year WordPress.com de-platformed The Conservative Treehouse. So they are dead to me.

As far as hosting goes, I haven't found anyone who is explicitly pro-free speech but I haven't researched it much myself. That's something I'll be doing soon, though. The big key with a lot of hosting providers is to find out where they are actually hosting their websites (e.g., do they have their own servers or are they just placing your site on their AWS platform?).

TLDR: My opinion is to use WordPress and find a host that does not leverage Amazon, Microsoft, etc. for server space.

Wow, I actually just used wordpress.com thinking it was the actual wordpress that everybody used.

I only paid $48, and registered my domain name with it. Not too much of a loss. What exactly is the problem with wordpress.com?

Am I stuck with it now? Do they have control over that domain name now?

Can I still switch over to wordpress.org and find a hosting somewhere? Any suggestions on a web hosting to start with until I figure something else out?

I don't really care too much about making a fancy website at this point, but I am concerned with keeping my domain name in case of being de-platformed by wordpress.com and then I won't be able to switch somewhere else using the same domain name.

Is that something I have to worry about?

Sadly, that's the trap a lot of people fall into. I hate the fact that they brand themselves as "the WordPress people". Sorry it happened to you, Anon.

Reread my reply to you about not controlling your platform with website services like WordPress.com and Wix. WordPress.com is better than the others in that you can still export the site from the WordPress.com server and transfer it to another host at a later date, if you choose. You can also move your domain over to another domain registrar later, but that will likely cost you another $10.

Yes, if you want to switch over to a different host, I would recommend BlueHost for inexpensive but effective or SiteGround for slightly more expensive but excellent.

I migrated one my personal sites off WordPress.com last year and transferred the domain to my account on Domain.com. Completely possible, but just takes a little time and effort. Better to do it sooner than later, as once your site gets large, it will be harder to transfer.

Hope this helps, Anon!

AWS Amplify is a cheap serverless system for building web sites. Since there are no "servers" running the system, the up front cost is low and it's a pay as it's consumed model (the more traffic hit, the more the price increases… we're talking fraction of pennies as of today).

With that said, it's not necessarily simple to get it up and running in short order, some dev experience is needed.

If you're wanting something to get information out with comment section feedback loops, I agree with the anon that referred to running a wordpress server, or there are other flavors in that market as well.
