NEVER SURRENDER
July 6, 1747, John Paul Jones is born at Arbigland, Scotland. Originally appointed to the Continental Navy in 1775, he is known for his quote, “I’ve not yet begun to fight!” during the battle between Continental frigate, Bonhomme Richard, and HMS Serapis on Sept. 23, 1779. He also commands Continental ships USS Alfred, USS Ranger, and USS America. Following the American Revolution and the disbanding of the Continental Navy, he subsequently serves in both the French and Russian navies. Jones dies on July 19, 1792 in Paris. Years later, his coffin is exhumed, brought to the United States, and is eventually reburied in a mausoleum at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The US Navy names five ships in his honor.
