Authorities Seize Nearly $3 Million Worth of Meth in Onion Shipment

SAN DIEGO—Authorities seized nearly $3 million worth of methamphetamine, hidden among a shipment of onions, during a tractor-trailer’s inspection at federal facility in San Diego, officials announced Friday.

A K-9 unit for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection alerted to the trailer’s shipment of onions on Sunday and officers found nearly 1,200 small packages of meth, the agency said Friday in a news release. The 46-year-old driver, a Mexican national who was not named, was arrested for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt at the Otay Mesa port-of-entry commercial vehicle facility, officials said.

The packages of meth—more than 1,336 pounds (606 kilograms)—were shaped into small globes with a white covering, the agency said, and meant to blend into the onions. The drugs are estimated to be worth $2.9 million on the street.

“This was not only a clever attempt to try and smuggle in narcotics, one I haven’t seen before, but also time consuming to wrap narcotics into these small packages, designed to look like onions,” said Sidney Aki, CBP Director of Field Operations in San Diego, in the news release. “While we have certainly seen narcotics in produce before, it’s unusual for us to see this level of detail in the concealment.”

A California businessman who is on trial for conspiring to illegally donate over $3 million to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign is blaming Donald Trump for his actions.

Rani El-Saadi’s lawyer, Megan Church, is arguing her client broke the law out of fear of the “Muslim travel ban.”

“He believed that his contribution to Hillary Clinton’s campaign would save his business,” Church said, according to a report from Politico. “His company catered to clients who were travelers from Muslim-majority countries in the Middle East—the same people Mr. Trump intended to ban from the U.S.A. A Trump presidency posed a fatal threat to Mr. El-Saadi’s business. That’s why he donated.”

However, according to the report, “as the trial for El-Saadi and a co-defendant opened in federal court in Washington on Thursday, a prosecutor offered an equally simple explanation for the $150,000 El-Saadi personally ponied up to attend a Clinton fundraiser in Las Vegas in October 2016: Another, much wealthier man — digital payments magnate Andy Khawaja — secretly gave El-Saadi the money.”

“This is a case about a large-scale conspiracy to funnel well in excess of $1 million into the U.S. political system — money that came from the United Arab Emirates,” prosecutor Michelle Parikh told jurors.

Parikh has made an even more shocking claim in court — the money actually originated from the UAE government.

The scheme was allegedly cooked up by multi-billionaire Allied Wallet founder Khawaja.

“Khawaja wanted very badly to gain power and influence in the U.S.,” Parikh said.

Five other men charged in the case have pleaded guilty and cooperated with the prosecution.

Swift payments crackdown on Russia edges closer

Moves to shut Russia out of the main global bank payments system have gained ground after Germany's government softened its stance. Countries including the UK have lobbied for Russia to be blocked from the Swift system, which makes it possible to move money across frontiers.

Now Germany, which opposed the move, has said it favours "targeted and functional" restrictions. The economy and foreign ministers said they wanted to hit "the right people".

The change of heart opens the way to further economic sanctions against Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. Until now, Germany had argued that simply ejecting Russia from Swift would damage Western economies massively and bring widespread suffering to ordinary Russian people, rather than the government.

CNN has reportedly zeroed in on the replacement for former President Jeff Zucker, and it will be Chris Licht, sources told Puck News’ Dylan Byers.

Byers’ sources have close ties to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav, according to his report.

“I can now report, based on conversations with sources who have spoken directly with Zaslav, that Licht is indeed the person who Zaslav has selected to run CNN,” Byers wrote.

“Licht will run CNN as head of news for Warner Bros. Discovery, a source familiar with the matter said. Unlike Zucker, his purview will not extend to sports. Gazprom Financial Director found dead, allegedly by suicide

The circumstances of the death of the Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center of Gazprom for Corporate Security, whose body was found in the prestigious village of Leninskoye in the Vyborg District of the Leningrad Region, are being established. A note was found nearby, law enforcement officials told 47news. A month earlier, the body of a top manager of another division from Gazprom's orbit was found in the same village. Both of the now deceased previously worked at Gazprom Transgaz.

As it became known to 47news, in the early morning of February 25, the police received a message about the death of a man on Rubinovaya Street in an elite cottage village in Leninsky.

The officers who arrived at the scene found the deceased in a noose in the annex garage, a note lay nearby. The deceased was identified as 61-year-old Alexander Tyulakov, Deputy General Director of the Unified Settlement Center (UCC) of Gazprom for corporate security. This division performs the functions of the treasury of the entire monopoly.

Prior to his appointment to the ERC, Alexander Tyuliakov, since March 2014, worked as Deputy General Director for Corporate Security and Human Resources at Gazprom Transgaz St. Petersburg, a 100% subsidiary of Gazprom, which was engaged in the export and transportation of fuel to nine regions of Russia.

The circumstances of the incident are established by the Investigative Committee of the Leningrad Region.

Gazprom ERC at the time of publication could not comment on the incident.

Recall that a month earlier, a 60-year-old head of the transport service of Gazprom Invest, Leonid Shulman, was found dead in a mansion on Zhemchuzhnaya Street in the same village of Leninskoye . A retractable construction knife was found on the side of the bath. A note was also found. Shulman also previously worked for Gazprom Transgaz.

Bizarre Knife Accident In California Causes Six-Car Crash

A man driving in Rancho Bernardo in San Diego on Sunday morning (February 20) died after he hit a parked car and stabbed himself, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Police and wire reports revealed the bizarre fatal accident then caused a chain-reaction crash involving another five cars.

The accident occurred at 5:24 a.m. on Sunday when a 28-year-old man driving a 2000 Lexus on Rancho Bernardo Road veered to the right for unknown reasons and crashed into a parked vehicle. The impact deployed the car's airbag and the man was possibly using a knife while driving.

According to OnScene TV, San Diego Fire officials who responded to the scene found a heavy amount of blood inside the car, a knife, and protein powder sprinkled throughout the vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital where a stab wound was found in his neck. He died later that day, according to San Diego Police.

Officials believe the man may have been using the knife to mix protein powder into a container of water when he became distracted and crashed. When the car's airbag deployed, it may have forced the knife into the man's neck.

According to the Union-Tribune, there were no reports of other injuries in the five other cars that were damaged in the chain-reaction crash.

North Korea has fired an "unidentified projectile", South Korea's military said Sunday morning, after a seemingly quiet month without launches during the Beijing Olympics. "North Korea fired an unidentified projectile eastward," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, without giving further details.

Blinken Announces $350 Million In New US Military Aid To Ukraine

The United States is providing Ukraine with $350 million in additional military equipment to fight off Russia's "brutal and unprovoked assault," Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Saturday. "This package will include further lethal defensive assistance to help Ukraine address the armored, airborne, and other threats it is now facing," Blinken said in a statement. Nuclear shipyard director held for uranium hoard

A deputy director of a company that operates and repairs Russia's nuclear-powered icebreakers has been arrested for hoarding in his garage 2kg of highly radioactive material.

Alexander Tyuliakov, 50, was seized as he tried to sell undercover investigators a suitcase containing the material, which is thought to include a small amount of uranium 235, capable of being used to make a "dirty" bomb.

It was unclear yesterday whether he had got it from his employer, Atomflot, which refuels the Arctic icebreakers at its Murmansk shipyard, or from his contacts in the nuclear industry.

The undercover officers made contact with him after the secret service had word that he was trying to sell the material. He was arrested early last month when he met them to complete the deal. The operation was filmed by the internal security agency, the FSB.

The investigators have not commented on the quality of the radioactive material, which is still being examined.

In recent years Ukraine has popped up in the mainstream media due to explosive political developments. Starting with the “Orange Revolution” in November of 2004, to the Euromaidan coup d’etat that was carried out by multiple fascists organizations and was propped up and propagated by the US government.

With the recent surge in Ukrainian ultra-nationalism and the rise of fascist groups both within the Ukrainian political sphere as well as the upper echelons of military hierarchy, it is crucial to understand its historical origins, beginning with Ukrainian collaboration with Nazi Germany during World War II. On June 22, 1941 the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union began under the name Operation Barbarossa. The original purpose of the operation was to conquer the western Soviet Union to implement “Lebensraum,” or “living space,” for ethnic Germans to relocate and repopulate former Soviet territories. The Slavic people already living there were to be used as slave labor to aid the Axis powers and to seize the agricultural production available in this portion of the Soviet Union (Norman, 1973). The extermination and genocide of Slavic peoples, due to their designation as “sub-human,” was also to be carried out to facilitate the relocation and repopulation efforts of ethnic Germans in Slavic lands.

Operation Barbarossa was initially highly successful, with the brunt of the offensive being taken by the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. At the beginning of the war the population of Ukraine was at 23.2 million however, in what could accurately be described as Ukraine’s own holocaust, by the end of the war 3,000,000 Ukrainians and other non-Jews had been executed, with an additional 2,300,000 Ukrainians being deported to allow for the “Germanization” of Ukrainian territory (Gregorovich, 1995).

Following the initial opening of Operation Barbarossa, on July 17, 1941 Hitler issued an official decree defining how Nazi-occupied Ukraine would be governed by a Nazi-appointed civilian regime known as the Reichskommissariat Ukraine (RKU) and overseen by Nazi Party regional East Prussian branch leader Erich Koch (Eher, 1946). The RKU was tasked with the pacification of Ukraine, the extermination of political dissidents and those who would interfere with the process of Nazi post-war expansion, as well as the general exploitation of the Ukrainian resources and people to further the goals of the Third Reich.

In addition to the establishment of the RKU, Heinrich Himmler personally saw to the formation of the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police (UAP) (Shapiro et. al., 2005). That UAP itself was split into two different categories. The first, known as the “Schutzmannschaft” or “protection team”, was tasked with carrying out anti-Jewish atrocities along with combating pro-Soviet partisan resistance throughout most of Ukraine. The second group was simply referred to as the “Ukrainian Police,” which operated under the guidance of the infamous Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS) and was given special autonomy from the RKU (Bewersdorf, 2008). The UAP were the major perpetrators in the portion of the Holocaust that occurred in Ukraine. In the region of Volhynia alone, the Ukrainian police units exterminated 150,000 Jews in addition to the murder and deportation of countless other non-Jewish Ukrainian nationals (Statiev, 2010).

Secret Service Unable to Locate Multiple Years of Hunter Biden Travel Records

The U.S. Secret Service (USSS) says it cannot locate years of records on communications regarding agents guarding Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden was a Secret Service protectee from Jan. 29, 2009, to July 8, 2014, and traveled extensively during that time, including to Russia, China, and India, a congressional investigation found.

As part of the probe, which is ongoing, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) have sought records from the Secret Service in their roles as the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Secret Service provided some 261 heavily redacted pages (pdf) concerning the travel but did not provide any records from 2010, 2011, or 2013.

“The USSS’s lack of communications during these years raises questions given that USSS travel records show that Hunter Biden made trips to China and other destinations around the world, including, Russia, Italy, Spain and Mexico,” Grassley and Johnson wrote in a letter to USSS Director James Murray in January.

Murray responded in a letter dated Feb. 14 obtained by The Epoch Times.

He said that a search for the records “did not yield communications for the years 2010, 2011, or 2013.”

The USSS and a lawyer for Hunter Biden did not respond to requests for comment.

Murray said the Secret Service and its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security, “remain committed to working with Congress to meet its oversight responsibilities and be responsive to requests for information.”

Chris Farrell, the director of investigations and research for Judicial Watch, told The Epoch Times that it’s “highly improbable” that the USSS lost the records in question.

“I would not be surprised if there was political pressure on the service to withhold the records because it would be politically damaging to President Biden,” he added.

Judicial Watch, one of the most prolific record-seeking nonprofits, has also sought Hunter Biden travel records from the Secret Service, and obtained some through a Freedom of Information Act request that showed the countries and territories he visited while under the agency’s protection.

The records the senators and Judicial Watch are now seeking would likely shed more light on the younger Biden’s actions during that period of time, Farrell said.

Both Judicial Watch and Sens. Grassley and Johnson say Hunter Biden leveraged his father’s position as vice president to benefit himself personally, even conducting business while on trips with his father.

“Past performance doesn’t always guarantee exact reproduction or the same details, but I think it’s reasonable, given the the pattern and practice, that we would see more of the same—lots of instances where Hunter was traveling with his father and essentially leveraging his father’s position as vice president for his own personal business benefit,” Farrell said.

Judicial Watch could file a lawsuit over the records.

Hunter Biden, who is currently being investigated by a U.S. prosecutor, and President Biden have denied any wrongdoing.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters in late 2021 that she would not answer questions about Hunter Biden because he is “not an employee of the federal government."

Saudi Arabia Announces Discovery of Five Natural Gas Fields

Saudi Arabia’s state oil company discovered five new natural gas fields across the kingdom that can produce over 100 million cubic feet per day in total, as the oil-rich kingdom looks to boost production of the fuel.

The fields, discovered by Saudi Aramco, are located in the country’s central region, the empty quarter desert, the northern border region and the Eastern province, Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said in a statement.

Expanding gas output has become a priority for Saudi Arabia as it looks to cut the amount of oil burned for power production that could be more profitably exported, while also hitting a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2060. Saudi Arabia’s gas reserves are the largest in the Arab world after Qatar’s, according to BP Plc.

Aramco awarded a raft of contracts in November for the development of the $110 billion Jafurah gas field, one of the world’s biggest natural gas projects.

Jafurah is estimated to hold 200 trillion cubic feet of rich raw gas, and Aramco expects to begin production there in 2024, reaching about 2.2 billion standard cubic feet per day of sales by 2036. Gas from the field could be used to produce blue hydrogen, a fuel seen as crucial to the green-energy transition.

The five fields were described as follows:

*Shadoon, in the central region southeast of Riyadh, producing 27 million cubic feet of gas per day with 3,300 barrels of condensate

*Shehab, in the empty quarter, with 31 million cubic feet per day of gas

*Shorfa, in the empty quarter, with 16.9 million cubic feet per day

*Umm Khansir, with 2 million cubic feet per day of unconventional natural gas

*Samna, with three different wells totaling 26.7 million cubic feet per day of unconventional natural gas

Credit Suisse Tries to Aid U.S. in Block-Trading Probe of Rivals

Credit Suisse Group AG, saddled with billions of dollars in losses from the collapse of Archegos Capital Management last year, is trying to help the U.S. Justice Department potentially build a case related to block trading against rivals Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

The Swiss firm’s push to provide assistance apparently goes beyond banks’ routine cooperation with requests for information, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential deliberations. Last week, Credit Suisse’s representatives delivered a presentation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, flagging potential issues with Archegos’s collapse in March.

No bank was hurt more by the blowup of Bill Hwang’s highly leveraged family office than Credit Suisse, which was left nursing more than $5 billion in losses, a hit that triggered leadership and structural changes. Persuading authorities that other banks acted improperly could help the Zurich-based lender head off regulatory sanctions or even give it a legal edge in recouping some losses.

Representatives for Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and the Justice Department declined to comment.

Archegos used banks’ prime brokerages to place outsized bets on stocks that soon soared, giving it gains that allowed it to wager more. When prices started slipping, the firm came under pressure. And when lenders realized it couldn’t post the collateral needed to avoid unwinding the positions, they held emergency talks.

Bloomberg reported last year that Credit Suisse, facing significant exposure, pushed for an agreement to hold off on rapidly unwinding the family office’s portfolio. But the effort failed, and Credit Suisse was caught flat-footed as Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs moved faster to extinguish their exposures, setting off further price declines that spelled pain for banks left behind.

Russian central bank to resume gold purchases on domestic market from Monday

Russia's central bank on Sunday said it would resume buying gold on the domestic market from Feb. 28, as it undertakes measures to try and ensure financial stability during Western sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his military command to put nuclear-armed forces on high alert as Ukrainian fighters defending the city of Kharkiv said they had repelled an attack by invading Russian troops.

He may have been off by one day, because in the hours following the western announcement to suspend some Russian banks from SWIFT and to launch sanctions on the Russian central bank, we have seen scenes across Russia reminiscent of a bank run as locals lined up at cash machines around the country to withdraw foreign currency amid growing fears the ruble could collapse when it resumes trading on Monday.

There are indications that the ruble will fall sharply when trading opens on Monday. Exchange rates being offered by lenders are already varying widely on Sunday, from 98.08 rubles per dollar at Alfa Bank to 99.49 at Sberbank PJSC, 105 at VTB Group and 115 at Otkritie Bank at 3:30 p.m. in Moscow. The spot ruble price on the Moscow Exchange closed at 83 per dollar on Friday.

“I can’t see a scenario where it doesn’t get hammered,” said Paul McNamara, a fund manager at GAM Investments. “I don’t expect effective intervention in terms of pricing, but in terms of reducing legal grounds to sell rubles.”

The rush for foreign currency came despite Bloomberg reporting that some lenders selling dollars at more than a third higher than the market’s close on Friday, and well past the psychologically important level of 100 rubles per dollar that many economists said would trigger an interest-rate hike by the Bank of Russia. The shock came as Russians were still digesting news that Europe was closing its airspace to them and popular payment systems like ApplePay would stop working.

Late on Saturday, the U.S. and the European Union agreed to kick some Russian banks off the SWIFT financial messaging system and freeze the central bank’s reserves. On Sunday, the EU announced it would close of its airspace to Russian carriers, which could make it difficult to physically transport cash into the country.

The central bank said last week it was increasing supplies of cash to ATMs to meet the demand and issued another statement Sunday vowing to provide banks “uninterrupted” supplies of rubles. The release made no mention of possible foreign-currency support or the sanctions.

Russia last faced a major run on cash in 2014, when plunging oil prices in the wake of western sanctions triggered a crash in the exchange rate. Sberbank, Russia’s biggest bank, ran through 1.3 trillion rubles ($16 billion) in a single week, according to Bloomberg.

“The situation is completely unstable, and sanctions and restrictions on the central bank can only get worse,” said Alexandra Suslina, a budget specialist at the Moscow-based Economic Expert Group. “There’s already a bit of a rush to take money out of ATMs, but no cash machine is designed for the lines that will appear at sanctioned banks.”
