Housing Inventory February 14th Update: Inventory Down 2.5% Week-over-week; New Record Low

Tracking existing home inventory is very important in 2022. Inventory usually declines in the winter, and this is a new record low for this series. As of February 11th, inventory was at 250 thousand (7-day average), compared to 344 thousand for the same week a year ago. That is a decline of 27.5%. A week ago, inventory was at 256 thousand, and was down 27.9% YoY. Inventory was down 5.9% from the previous week. Compared to the same week in 2020, inventory is down 65.7% from 727 thousand.

Last year, seasonally, inventory bottomed in April 2021 - very late in the year - usually inventory bottoms by February. An early key in 2022 will be to watch if inventory bottoms earlier this year.

Inflation Expectations Unexpectedly Tumble For The First Time Since Oct 2020, According To The NY Fed

Another day, another contradictory economic data point.

Just one business day after the latest UMichigan report showed consumer sentiment in January tumbled to the lowest level since 2011, driven in large part by the continued surge in inflation expectations which hit a whopping 5.0% for the 1-year window, the highest since 2008 and a remarkable 3.1% for the 5-10 year period, the highest since 2011 and following a relentless increase over the past two years... moments ago the NY Fed published its own contradicting view on the critical issue of consumer inflation expectations - critical because the higher it rises, the closer the Fed is to losing control over monetary policy anchor, inflation expectations - when it unveiled earlier today that inflation expectations unexpectedly declined for both the 1 Year and 3 Year look-ahead periods.

Specifically, the NY Fed's Survey of Consumer Expectations found that inflation expectations at the one-year horizon decreased to 5.79% in Jan. from the previous month’s 5.99%, the lowest since October and the first decline since October 2020, while median three-year ahead inflation expectations fell by a striking 0.52 percentage points to just 3.48%, the lowest since April...thanks to a broad-based drop across age, education, and income groups, and marked the largest monthly decline since survey inception in 2013!

Yet while it was unclear what prompted this sharp drop in inflation expectations - whether it was pessimism on continued wage growth and cyclical recovery (both good drivers of inflation) or because of asset inflation and supply chain congestion (both bad), the latest survey showed that median year-ahead home price change expectations continued to grow and in January rose to 6.0% from 5.53%, an increase that was most pronounced among respondents with no more than a high school education and those who live in the West and Northeast census regions. All products and services surveyed by the New York Fed unexpectedly declined in January, including the year-ahead price changes for food, rent, gas, medical care, college education and gold. Specifically, over the next year consumers expect gasoline prices to rise 5.57%; food prices to rise 7.73%; medical costs to rise 9.45%; the price of a college education to rise 7.32%; rent prices to rise 9.84%.

Warburg and Barry Sternlicht Partnering on Jumbo, 3-Way SPAC Deal

Buyout firm Warburg Pincus and property billionaire Barry Sternlicht are partnering up in a rare, three-way, blank-check deal worth about $20 billion to take a security services firm public. In another unusual twist, Warburg Pincus already owns the target.

Three special purpose acquisition companies two backed by Warburg Pincus, and one backed by Sternlicht are in talks to merge with Allied Universal, according to people familiar with the matter, in what would be the first SPAC deal involving more than one of the popular investment vehicles. Warburg Pincus Capital Corp I-A, Warburg Pincus Capital Corp I-B and a SPAC affiliate of JAWS Estates Capital LLC, Sternlicht’s family office, are discussing raising a so-called private investment in public equity, or PIPE, to support a transaction with Allied Universal, the people said. A deal, which has been in negotiations for months, hasn’t been finalized, and terms could change or talks could fall apart. The people asked not to be identified because the discussions aren’t public.

A representative for Warburg Pincus declined to comment. A representative for Sternlicht didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The deal illustrates how SPAC dealmakers are getting increasingly creative as the merger vehicles begin falling out of favor after booming in popularity for the past two years. A number of SPAC deals have fallen apart in recent months while other companies that went public via blank-check deals have plunged in value.

This deal would create a pathway to an exit for Warburg Pincus’s investment in Allied Universal, which describes itself as having the largest security force in North America. Warburg Pincus in 2015 agreed to take a majority stake in Universal Services of America, and later combined it with AlliedBarton Security Services.

The pandemic had minimal impact on Allied Universal, Fitch Ratings Inc. said in a report in November. Allied Universal, which said Monday it struck a strategic partnership with Knightscope Inc., said its annual revenue is approximately $20 billion and that it has more than 800,000 employees worldwide.

Warburg Pincus, one of Wall Street’s oldest and most successful buyout firms, was a somewhat latecomer to SPACs. Last year, it launched the two vehicles, its first SPACs, following peers including TPG Inc., Apollo Global Management Inc. and Thoma Bravo into the market. Warburg Pincus said in filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the SPACs can merge with an affiliate of the buyout firm, pending a fairness opinion from an independent entity.

Sternlicht, chief executive officer of investment firm Starwood Capital Group, has more experience in SPACs, sponsoring blank-check firms that have merged with companies such as metal-printing specialist Velo3D Inc. and Cano Health Inc., a medical provider.

Federal regulators probe block trading at Morgan Stanley, Goldman, other big firms

SEC has reportedly issued subpoenas; Justice Department also reportedly investigating

Federal investigators are probing the business of block trading on Wall Street, examining whether bankers may have improperly tipped hedge-fund clients in advance of large share sales, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has sent subpoenas to firms including Morgan Stanley MS, -1.91% and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS, -0.78% as well as several hedge funds, asking for trading records and information about the investors’ communications with bankers, some of the people said. The Justice Department also is investigating the matter, some of the people said.

The issuance of subpoenas doesn’t mean charges will be brought against any of the firms or individuals whose activities are being scrutinized. Regulators have been looking into irregularities around block trades since at least 2019, when the SEC requested records from several large banks, people familiar with the matter said.

Investigators are looking at whether bankers improperly alerted favored clients to the sales before they were publicly disclosed and whether the funds benefited from the information—for example by shorting the shares in question. (In a short sale, an investor sells borrowed stock in hopes of buying it back at a lower price later and pocketing the difference.)

Shares of companies selling stock often fall because of an increase in supply hitting the market—and they do so frequently in the hours before a big block is sold, a phenomenon that has long raised questions on Wall Street.

Brutal Stock Deterioration: 46 Percent of Nasdaq Stocks Are More than 50 Percent Below their 52-Week High

The stock market indices that get all the headlines have failed to capture the brutal deterioration that has been occurring for months among the individual stock components of those indices.

In early February, Bank of America reported that 46 percent of Nasdaq’s component companies were more than 50 percent below their 52-week highs. And the deterioration in breadth began long before February.

On December 28, 2021, Wall Street On Parade ran this headline: A Tale of Two Markets: S&P 500 Notches Its 69th Record Close as the Bottom Falls Out of the Nasdaq. We noted in the article that “On December 3 there were 585 new 52-week lows on the Nasdaq stock market versus 12 new 52-week highs. To look at it another way, 48.75 times more stocks were setting new 52-week lows than were reaching new 52-week highs. That doesn’t sound like the definition of a bull market to us.”

A chart published by Liz Ann Sonders, Chief Investment Strategist for Charles Schwab & Co., on January 31 of this year further underscored the deterioration occurring below the headline index numbers. Sonders reported that the average stock decline in the Russell 3000 was a drop of 32 percent from its 52-week highs. Equally alarming, companies in the 10th decile within the Russell 3000 had experienced an average decline of nearly 70 percent from their 52-week high. Part of the problem stems from the low-quality of companies that former SEC Chairman Jay Clayton allowed to be brought to market in IPOs by Wall Street. The deterioration in the market has picked up steam as inflation has proven itself to be anything but “transitory” and as the stock market prices in the possibility of more rate hikes from the Fed this year than initially expected.

The Federal Reserve Board of Governors is holding a closed-door meeting at 11:30 a.m. today to decide on the Discount Rate that its Federal Reserve Banks will be charging when the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) votes to raise the Fed Funds Rate. The Fed typically releases its announcement on the Fed Funds Rate and Discount Rate simultaneously following a meeting of the FOMC. The Fed can, however, make an announcement between FOMC meetings if the situation seems to require urgent action. (The Board of Governors votes on the Discount Rate while the FOMC votes on the Fed Funds Rate.) The next regularly-scheduled meeting of the FOMC is set for March 15-16.

The Federal Reserve Board of Governors held an earlier closed-door meeting on January 18, also to make a review and determination of the Discount Rate. The January 18 meeting was not followed by an announcement of any increase in either the Discount Rate or Fed Funds rate. Since that time, however, inflation in the U.S. has ratcheted up and rhetoric in the press has grown that Fed Chair Jerome Powell has fallen behind the curve in keeping inflation in check.

The Goldman bankers used personal email accounts to conduct business outside company channels and employed bank accounts and shell businesses under the names of their wives and other family members to launder money looted from 1MDB, it was claimed. Leissner, the former head of Southeast Asia for Goldman, pleaded guilty in 2018 to conspiring to violate an anti-bribery law and launder money. He is slated to testify against Ng. The defense said there was a lack of incriminating evidence. Money moved around in the name of Ng's wife related to business dealings she had with Leissner's ex-wife, according to Ng lawyer Marc Agnifilo. Austin to visit defense officials in Poland, Belgium and Lithuania as potential Russian invasion of Ukraine looms

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will leave for a trip to Europe on Tuesday to speak with defense officials in Belgium, Poland and Lithuania as the potential of a Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to increase, chief Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.

In Belgium, Austin will meet with NATO leaders and defense ministers “to discuss Russia’s military buildup in and around Ukraine, continue the alliance’s progress on deterrence and defense while ensuring the alliance is prepared to face tomorrow’s challenges,” Kirby said Monday. Article 5 of the NATO treaty is known as the principle of collective defense, meaning “an attack against one ally is considered as an attack against all allies,” according to the alliance. If the article is invoked, NATO members agree to assist the attacked country.

Austin will meet with Poland’s president and defense minister while in that country, where the U.S. deployed about 4,700 troops of the 82nd Airborne Division from Fort Bragg, N.C., in the past two weeks as tensions simmered with Russia. Austin will also visit U.S. and Polish troops at Powidz Air Base “to tour the facilities and observe the culture and conditions of our rotational presence there,” Kirby said.

In Lithuania, Austin will meet Lithuania’s president, prime minister and defense minister to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to “working together to strengthen the Lithuania armed forces and continuing to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against threats and adversaries to advance shared interests and values,” Kirby said.

Austin will also meet with the Estonian and Latvian defense ministers in Lithuania, and later visit U.S. service members stationed there, Kirby said.
