A stunning fall for ex-Honduran president wanted in US

The arrest of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández and the images that followed — a leader shackled and paraded before the cameras like a common criminal — were a stunning reversal for a man who for years seemed impervious to growing allegations of corruption.

While president from 2014 until last month, he had the support of U.S. officials waging the war on drugs and some diplomats who did not see a better option. But less than three weeks out of office, his utility exhausted, the U.S. government moved for his extradition and the chance to make him an example in a region wracked by corruption.

Hernández arrived at the Supreme Court of Justice Wednesday morning for his initial court appearance. About 150 supporters from his National Party awaited him, chanting “You’re not alone!” He was arrested Tuesday at the request of the U.S. government on charges of drug trafficking, using weapons for drug trafficking and conspiracy to use weapons in drug trafficking.

U.S. prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have accused Hernández in recent years of funding his political rise with profits from drug traffickers in exchange for protecting their shipments.

For years, images were Hernández’s crutch. Accusations of ties to drug traffickers would stream from a New York City courtroom and Hernández would soon pop up in the United States or at an event with U.S. Embassy officials in Honduras, reinforcing the idea that he had U.S. government support and it was just bitter drug traffickers telling stories to seek revenge for his efforts against them.

G-7 foreign ministers to hold emergency meeting Saturday.

Group of Seven foreign ministers are set to hold an emergency meeting Saturday to discuss the tensions surrounding Ukraine, as the West remains skeptical of Russia's claims of drawing down troops from along its border. This will follow a meeting Wednesday of NATO defense ministers about the bloc's response to the crisis, including potentially deploying troops in Eastern Europe. "So far, we have not seen any de-escalation on the ground," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters Wednesday before the meeting. "On the contrary, it appears that Russia continues the military buildup." "The intelligence we are sharing is actually confirmed also with open sources, with satellite imagery from commercial satellites," he told reporters.

"There's what Russia says. And then there's what Russia does. And we haven't seen any pullback of its forces," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told MSNBC. "We continue to see critical units moving toward the border, not away from the border." "We confirmed that we will continue diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and remain in contact," Kishida told reporters.

The two leaders agreed that an invasion would "shake the foundations of international order, and have severe consequences," according to London's readout of the call.

It was reported Tuesday that the website of Ukraine's defense ministry was taken down by a cyberattack. Banks in the country were hacked as well.

"We have been in touch with the Ukrainians, our allies and partners, working with them to deter and respond to malicious cyberactivity," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

"There's a range of means that we could respond, both seen and unseen, to a cyberattack or any other attack," Psaki said. "Our view remains that the crippling package of sanctions is an effective deterrent."

20Y Auction Sees Record Direct Bidders As Yield Rises To Highest On Record

After a trio of surprisingly strong auctions last week, moments ago the Treasury concluded the week's only coupon auction when it sold $19 billion in 20Y paper in yet another solid auction.

The auction, the 22nd 20Y sale since the tenor was introduced back in May 2020, stopped at a high yield of 2.396%, the highest on 20Y auction record, and on the screws with the When Issued which was also trading at 2.396% ahead of the auction.

The bid to cover of 2.44 was slightly below January's 2.48 but was above the six-auction average of 2.41%, but was the lowest since November's 2.34.

The internals were also somewhat soggy with Indirects taking down 62.9%, below January's 66.2% below the six-auction average of 63.8% and the lowest since November of 2021. And with Directs taking down 21.0%, or the highest on record, Dealers were left holding just 16.1%, the second lowest on record, and below the recent average of 17.8%. Overall, the auction priced in line with expectations, and despite some weakness in the bid to cover and Indirect takedown, the record Direct bid will likely compensate for this weakness.

More notably, the 20s30s yield curve continued to trade inverted, after first dipping into negative territory back in October. There is no risk of this particular part of the yield curve disinverting any time soon.

The U.S. Marine Corps F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) jets jointly operated with an F-117 Nighthawk from Tonopah Test Range.

On Feb. 8, 2022, the news started circulating online about at least one F-117 Nighthawk working the pattern at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) Miramar, California. The sighting immediately brought to mind the somewhat surprising deployment two F-117s did in 2020 to Miramar as well as the one to Fresno last year.

While the activities carried out from the base just outside San Diego in 2020 have never been publicly acknowledged and little is known other than the aircraft landed at MCAS Miramar in the afternoon on Oct. 20, 2020, and departed two days later, on Oct. 22, returning directly to Tonopah Test Range after a mission offshore in the W291 range off Southern California, the deployment to Fresno got at least an official confirmation. As we reported back then, at the end of Sept. 2021, two F-117s, flying as KNIGHT01, arrived at Fresno Yosemite International Airport to carry out dissimilar air combat training with the local-based California Air National Guard F-15C/D Eagles. Several shots and clips, taken by aviation photographers showed the iconic “Wobblin Goblin” at work over central California and the 144th FW posted a video of the Nighthawk operating at Fresno on their FB page too. But, some interesting details were provided, along with the first official images of Nighthawk aircraft flying again after being retired in 2008, by a USAF’s public release. Fortunately, local photographers were outside MCAS Miramar for the 2022 deployment, getting some really cool shots of the F-117 deployed there last week. “It was a very similar pattern to when the Nighthawks visited Fresno. I was also there for that one,” told us our friend and local photographer @point_mugu_skies. “This Nighthawk arrived Monday afternoon…..did a quick morning flight on Tuesday and then nothing the rest of the day (maybe a night flight) then a flight at 11:30am roughly on Wednesday, then an early flight on Thursday at 7:45am or so. He left back to Tonopah on Friday around 11AM”.

The interesting thing is that the aircraft this time integrated with the F-35Bs of the Marine fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 225 “Vikings” of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 13, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, U.S. Marine Corps, deployed to MCAS Miramar from MCAS Yuma.

“Wednesday and Thursday it returned to base in a flight of 3….two different F-35s each day. Same squadron. Wind direction reversed runways on Thursday which is how I got that unique angle. My son and I were the only spotters there on Thursday so we were the only ones that got that shot.”

FOMC Minutes: "Faster" is the Word

In light of elevated inflation pressures and the strong labor market, participants continued to judge that the Committee's net asset purchases should be concluded soon. Most participants preferred to continue to reduce the Committee's net asset purchases according to the schedule announced in December, bringing them to an end in early March. A couple of participants stated that they favored ending the Committee's net asset purchases sooner to send an even stronger signal that the Committee was committed to bringing down inflation.

Participants discussed the implications of the economic outlook for the likely timing and pace for removing policy accommodation. Compared with conditions in 2015 when the Committee last began a process of removing monetary policy accommodation, participants viewed that there was a much stronger outlook for growth in economic activity, substantially higher inflation, and a notably tighter labor market. Consequently, most participants suggested that a faster pace of increases in the target range for the federal funds rate than in the post-2015 period would likely be warranted, should the economy evolve generally in line with the Committee's expectation.

Even so, participants emphasized that the appropriate path of policy would depend on economic and financial developments and their implications for the outlook and the risks around the outlook, and they will be updating their assessments of the appropriate setting for the policy stance at each meeting. Participants noted that the removal of policy accommodation in current circumstances depended on the timing and pace of both increases in the target range of the federal funds rate and the reduction in the size of the Federal Reserve's balance sheet. In this context, a number of participants commented that conditions would likely warrant beginning to reduce the size of the balance sheet sometime later this year.

In their discussion of the outlook for monetary policy, many participants noted the influence on financial conditions of the Committee's recent communications and viewed these communications as helpful in shifting private-sector expectations regarding the policy outlook into better alignment with the Committee's assessment of appropriate policy. Participants continued to stress that maintaining flexibility to implement appropriate policy adjustments on the basis of risk-management considerations should be a guiding principle in conducting policy in the current highly uncertain environment.

Most participants noted that, if inflation does not move down as they expect-*it's not going to and again...talk to he bond market faggits, it would be appropriate for the Committee to remove policy accommodation at a faster pace than they currently anticipate. Some participants commented on the risk that financial conditions might tighten unduly in response to a rapid removal of policy accommodation. A few participants remarked that this risk could be mitigated through clear and effective communication of the Committee's assessments of the economic outlook, the risks around the outlook, and the appropriate path for monetary policy.

Hillary Clinton finally breaks silence, calls John Durham claims ‘fake scandal’

If anyone knows scandals, it’s Hillary Clinton.

The former first lady, senator, secretary of state and two-time Democratic presidential candidate finally responded Wednesday to last week’s court filing by special counsel John Durham alleging that her 2016 presidential campaign paid for computer research to link then-candidate Donald Trump to Russia.

"Trump & Fox are desperately spinning up a fake scandal to distract from his real ones,” Clinton said on Twitter. “So it’s a day that ends in Y. The more his misdeeds are exposed, the more they lie.

“For those interested in reality, here’s a good debunking of their latest nonsense,” she concluded the post, attaching a link to a Vanity Fair article titled: “You’ll never believe it but Hillary Clinton did not, in fact, spy on Trump’s White House.”

Clinton broke her silence one day after she ignored questions from The Post about Durham’s claims after she and her daughter, Chelsea, were at a Queens restaurant.

Durham filed court papers Friday in which he alleged that a Clinton campaign lawyer enlisted a tech executive to help “mine” internet data from locations including Trump Tower and the White House “to establish ‘an inference’ and ‘narrative’ tying then-candidate Trump to Russia."

The documents filed by Durham, who was appointed special counsel by then-Attorney General William Barr in May 2019, have ignited a firestorm of criticism against the Clinton campaign and led to calls for a closer look at the FBI’s handling of the Russia probe, which was code-named “Crossfire Hurricane.”

Trump himself, who described the accusations as “bigger than Watergate,” called on the Justice Department Tuesday to declassify and release all of the remaining documents related to the claims that his campaign colluded with Russia.

“They have the declassification order. And they should declassify, absolutely, especially in the light of what has just happened and what has just been revealed,” the 45th president told Fox News.

Two Republican senators — Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Chuck Grassley of Iowa — also asked the Justice Department Tuesday to declassify all outstanding Russia probe records. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), the House minority leader, vowed on the same day to pursue Durham’s findings if Republicans gain control of the House after this fall’s midterm elections.

“Special Counsel John Durham’s continued investigation into the Russia hoax is essential to getting to the truth and protecting our democracy,” McCarthy said in a statement to The Post.

“Democrats and legacy media may want to sweep this alarming report under the rug, but if House Republicans earn the majority, we will use our oversight tools to determine whether federal funds were used, whether federal office-holders abused their power, and investigate other disturbing elements of this spying scheme to ensure nothing like it ever happens again,” he added.

​Durham alleged in his filing Friday that Michael Sussmann, a Clinton campaign lawyer, “assembled and conveyed” spurious claims about the Trump Organization and Moscow-based Alfa-Bank “to the FBI on behalf of at least two specific clients, including … the Clinton campaign.”

Sussmann has been charged with lying to a federal agent, and pleaded not guilty in September.

According to Durham, Sussmann told then-FBI general counsel James Baker in September 2016 that he was not working on behalf of the Clinton campaign when he handed over documents purportedly detailing a supposed link between the Trump Organization and Alfa-Bank.

​Sussmann then approached a second agency, believed to be the CIA, in February 2017 to hand over an “updated set of allegations” about the bank.

The defense team on Monday accused Durham of injecting “prejudicial — and false — allegations that are irrelevant to his Motion and to the charged offense.” Sussmann’s lawyers added that the special counsel’s claims were “plainly intended to politicize this case, inflame media coverage, and taint the jury pool” and also took issue with the inference that digital surveillance by the Clinton team continued after Trump was inaugurated in 2017.

FDA Executive Officer Says US Government Plans to Push Annual COVID-19 Shots

An executive officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a newly released video that President Joe Biden’s administration plans to push annual COVID-19 vaccine shots.

Christopher Cole, executive officer of the medical countermeasures initiative at the FDA, made the comments to the journalism group Project Veritas.

“Biden wants to inoculate as many people as possible,” Cole told an undercover reporter with the group. “You’ll have to get an annual shot. I mean, it hasn’t been formally announced yet because they don’t want to rile everyone up,” he said.

Right now, all Americans 5 and older are advised to get a two-dose primary regimen of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. All Americans 12 or older are also advised to get at least one booster dose five months after their second shot.

Cole said that drug, food, and vaccine companies “pay us hundreds of millions of dollars a year to hire and keep the reviewers to approve their products.”

He also said that annual shots would become “a recurring fountain of revenue” for the vaccine makers, referring to them as Big Pharma.

“It might not be that much initially, but it’ll be recurring—if they can get every person requiring an annual vaccine, that is a recurring return of money going into their company,” he added.

Cole didn’t respond to requests for comment, including an email, a LinkedIn message, and a voicemail at his office.

An FDA spokesperson told The Epoch Times in an email, “The person purportedly in the video does not work on vaccine matters and does not represent the views of the FDA.” The spokesperson didn’t respond to a followup question.

Cole later told Project Veritas that he is a manager in an office of the FDA that does not work on vaccines but that does help “oversee the approval of the COVID vaccines for emergency approval.”

Cole said his comments about having to get a COVID-19 vaccine annually was a comparison to how many Americans get a flu shot every year.

He also confirmed that he believes the FDA will ultimately grant emergency authorization for at least one vaccine for toddlers—the FDA delayed its decision on that front on Feb. 11—and that he is not in communication with the president, but “from what he’s said, he probably wants to inoculate more people than not.”

Cole said he was on a date when he made the remarks.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment and White House press secretary Jen Psaki didn’t address the matter during a briefing on Wednesday.

Biden and his administration have pushed virtually every American to get vaccinated, asserting its the best protection against COVID-19. They’ve also downplayed natural immunity, or protection enjoyed by people who recover from COVID-19, drawing criticism from some experts.

Dr. Robert Malone, who helped create the technology the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are built on, described the Project Veritas video as a “smoking gun.”

“What we have is an agency that has been completely distorted by the huge amounts of capital that await all their employees once they leave their agency,” he said on Steve Bannon’s show. “They have a strong incentive to behave in these ways, to do whatever’s necessary to comport with the interests of Big Pharma, and now you’ve got a smoking gun, thanks to Project Veritas.”

‘Religious right’ remark angers critics

Changes that would open up Canada’s legally-sanctioned euthanasia system have been approved by a two-to-one margin by MPs in the House of Commons,

but some MPs who voted against the changes say the government unfairly maligned religious Canadians during debate over the contentious issue.

Comments made by some members of the minority Liberal government, and specifically by Justice Minister David Lametti, angered some Conservative MPs

who feel the Liberal government tried to tar opponents of the changes as being members of a “religious right” cabal within the Official Opposition.

At one point in the House of Commons on Dec. 9 during debate on Bill C-7, which eases a number of restrictions in Canada’s existing medical assistance in dying (MAiD) regulations,

Lametti said, “Conservatives have made it clear they are not interested in improving the bill, they want to stop it,”

adding “the leader of the Official Opposition (Erin O’Toole) does not seem to have the power in his own caucus to rein in the religious right elements in his caucus,

elements that are always against this bill.”

Lametti has been critical of the Conservatives for prolonging debate on Bill C-7, despite there being a Dec. 18 Quebec court-imposed deadline to make changes to MAiD

after the requirement that a person’s death already be “reasonably foreseeable” before they qualify for MAiD was deemed to be too rigid and unconstitutional.

After Lametti spoke in the House, Conservative MP Garnett Genuis, who was participating in the debate virtually, immediately slammed Lametti’s comments.

“Madame Speaker, I think you’ll find the bigotry the minister is expressing towards people of faith is unparliamentary and he should be asked to withdraw it,” Genuis said.

Although no action was taken by the Speaker after Genuis made that comment,Lametti said in the House that “I am a person of faith.”

“I practise my faith and it is something that is always in me,” said Lametti, who is Catholic.

Conservative MP Nelly Shin also took issue with the minister’s statement about “religious right elements.”

“I’ve heard a lot through the debate of my party, my caucus being accused of filibustering and trying to delay,” Shin said.

“I feel that is a little heartbreaking because this is an issue that does have to do with life and death.

“Rather than attack the motives of other members on this topic that we would continue in our debate and understand this is a very complicated issue

and that we can have discussions … but avoid comments like the minister made about the religious right which I find very offensive,” Shin said.

The Catholic Church in Canada has been opposed to legal euthanasia since its inception in 2016 and has been vocal in its opposition to Bill C-7.

The legislation passed 213-106 and is being reviewed in the Senate.

When Canadian Catholic News contacted Lametti’s office for clarification on his “religious right” comment in the House,

his spokesperson Rachel Rappaport said his comments were related solely to what the government viewed as delaying tactics in the House by the Conservatives.

“As a Catholic and a person of faith himself, Lametti has acknowledged the multitude of views that members of different faith communities have shared about these difficult issues,”

a statement from Lametti’s office said.

“As with any issue that comes before Parliament, we know that not everyone will agree on the path forward,” the statement continued,

adding “the Minister’s comment was aimed squarely at politicians who had decided to prevent this important issue from coming to a vote,

knowing full well the risks that doing so could have on the most vulnerable and on those who are suffering.”

Canadian Court Delays Case for Fashion Designer Nygard as Justice Minister Mulls U.S. Extradition

- A court in Toronto on Wednesday delayed proceedings on sexual assault and forcible confinement charges for Canadian fashion designer Peter Nygard,

asCanada's justice minister decides whether to extradite him to the United States to face separate charges there.

Canadian police arrested Nygard, 80, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in December, 2020, at the U.S. government's request under the countries' extradition treaty.

He consented to extradition in October to face U.S. charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti has not yet ruled on whether to extradite Nygard, or whether to do so before or after he faces the Canadian charges.

Nygard has denied all allegations.

Nygard's lawyer, Brian Greenspan, appeared virtually in court and said that he was awaiting the minister's decision, which he expects in late March.

Nygard will next appear in Toronto court on March 30.

A spokesperson for Lametti could not be immediately reached.

Nygard, who did not appear in court on Wednesday, remains in jail, after a judge denied him bail in January.

Born in Finland, Nygard grew up in Manitoba, eventually running his namesake clothing companies and becoming one of Canada's wealthiest people.

U.S. authorities accuse Nygard of using his businesses to lure women and girls in the United States, Canada and the Bahamas since 1995

to sexually gratify himself and his associates.
