The crashes occurred Saturday in and near Oshkosh as a major annual airshow, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, was amid its penultimate day.

A midair collision between a helicopter and a gyrocopter as a major airshow was underway in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, left two dead and two injured Saturday, authorities said.

Two others died earlier in the day when a single-engine plane went into nearby Lake Winnebago, Capt. Lara Vendola-Messer with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said.

The two incidents happened as the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in and convention was being held nearby.

The first crash occurred about 9 a.m. when a single-engine North American T-6 Texan went into Lake Winnebago after departing Wittman Regional Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. This was off-site for the air show.

The U.S. Coast Guard for the Great Lakes Region confirmed two were on board and that its crews had located both persons. It said the plane was reportedly maneuvering before rapidly descending from around 3,000 feet.

Multiple agencies, including Winnebago County Marine Units, the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the morning's crash site.

The mid-air collision at Wittman Regional Airport was reported about 1:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Identities of the two deceased weren't immediately available. The two injured people were stabilized at a hospital, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh organizers said in a statement.

It wasn't clear which patients came from which aircraft, described by the FAA as a Rotorway 162F helicopter and an ELA Eclipse 10 gyrocopter.

Gyrocopters look like small helicopters, but their propellers spin under natural surface pressure — without the aid of engines or electric motors.

The Experimental Aircraft Association said the copters belonged to event-goers.

Aircraft operations at the airport were temporarily halted after the afternoon collision and the afternoon air show was briefly delayed, organizers said.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, based at Wittman, wraps up its weeklong run Sunday. The annual attraction features a fair-like atmosphere adjacent to airspace used to display vintage planes, state-of-the-art aircraft, and pilot performances.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating both incidents.

This culture of corruption and cover-up in the Massachusetts State Police must be eradicated, once and for all.

Who do these jack-booted thugs think they are — the FBI?

Our local multi-millionaire highway robbers need to go back to the pizza-delivery gigs they had before they got into the rackets. And that’s what the MSP is now, organized crime, a massive racketeering enterprise of grifts, shakedowns, gun-trafficking, drug deals, drunk driving, girlfriend-beating, embezzlement, etc.

And if a trooper is busted, most of the time the only “punishment” he gets is a lifetime six-figure annual pension at age 45 or 50, tax-free if he can scam a “disability,” which most of these sticky-fingered crooks can.

C’mon down, ex-Trooper Matthew Kelley, late of the “gang unit.” I think that means he was in the gang.

Kelley’s tawdry career ended in ignominy in early May, after he suffered what the brass at first described as a “medical emergency.”

This week, almost three months after the Herald began asking the State Police to confirm what we already knew as fact, they finally copped to the fact that Kelley had been dishonorably discharged for “improper storage of contraband.”

But at first they wouldn’t even say what the contraband was. Finally they admitted, “the contraband was narcotics.”

So Kelley had a “medical emergency,” after which he was fired for “improper storage” of narcotics. Hmmmm, I wonder where exactly Trooper Kelley was improperly storing the narcotics.

The Herald knew all this almost instantly — there are still some honest troopers out there, and they know how to get in touch with us.

If these honest cops weren’t keeping us (and you) informed, I guarantee that now-ex-troopers like the Foxboro Flasher Andrew Patterson, and Dwayne “Who Stole My Glock While I Was Shacking Up in Providence?” Correia would still be on the road making $200,000-plus a year.

On Kelley, we just needed an official confirmation from the State Police. That was three months ago.

The troopers’ stonewalling on Kelley began as soon as the first inquiry was made. The “medical emergency” was grudgingly acknowledged by a hack flack, with a one-sentence addendum:

“I have nothing further to add.”

We began filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, which by law are supposed to be answered in 10 days. When the phone didn’t ring, we knew it was the State Police.

Kelley vanished from the state payroll immediately. May turned into June. We filed more FOIA’s, got more non-responses. At the end of June, we learned that Kelley had, ahem, resigned, which seemed a rather harsh punishment for a “medical emergency.”

We asked the MSP to confirm his termination. No response. We filed more FOIA’s, to no avail.

As recklessly lawless as the MSP has become, they sometimes include a formal notice of dishonorable discharge in the orders of the day. Kelley, though, got a good, thorough leaving alone.

We kept making calls, perusing court documents. We assumed that Kelley had made arrests, and that at some point even the sleazy MSP was going to have to let the perps he’d lugged know about his “medical emergency” and subsequent termination.

If you’re a real reporter — and there aren’t many left — you know what to do next. You google Kelley’s name, find out who he’s been arresting. Once you have the defendants’ names, you get the docket numbers of their cases and pull the latest filings.

It may take a while, but eventually you may hit pay dirt.

It happened last week, in an obscure discovery motion filed July 26 in Bristol Superior Court. The attorney general listed 79 different pieces of evidence in a criminal case and then at the bottom of page 4 dropped this news:

“Please also be advised that Matthew Kelley, who was dishonorably discharged from the MSP on June 28, 2021, participated in the car stop….”

So it was finally public record. But the MSP asked for still more time to confirm — as if three months since of stonewalling and foot-dragging since the “medical emergency” wasn’t enough.

We have more questions about other staties for the MSP. This fired probationary trooper Nidu Andrade — to whom exactly were his “inappropriate texts sent?” Was it someone he met on the job? Under what circumstances?

When will you release Andrade’s actual texts? We need some more comic gold from you bent grossly overpaid clowns.

Another question: What percentage of state troopers applying for “disability” are approved? (The over-under line in Vegas is 100%.)

Does the very ethical MSP use the same medical board as the rest of the state? If not, why not?

Do any state troopers (retired and/or current) have any children who are about to be tried in criminal cases in Suffolk County?

Should the academy at New Braintree add more courses for the recruits, teaching them, for example, how a GPS can be used against them in a court of law if they’re embezzling federal overtime money?

Also, shouldn’t MSP recruits be instructed in the latest trends in drug trafficking, namely, the use of pill presses to produce counterfeit prescription tablets, and how what you take to be a safe FDA-approved opioid might in fact be fentanyl, which could lead to an unforeseen medical emergency?

By the way, Gov. Charlie Baker vows to get to the bottom of this pandemic of corruption among his dear pals on the State Police.

Rest assured, the governor will leave no stone unturned, except the ones all his crooked cops are hiding under.

Former President of Massachusetts State Police Union and Former Lobbyist Convicted of RICO, Fraud, Obstruction and Tax Charges

BOSTON – The former President of the State Police Association of Massachusetts (SPAM) and the union’s former Massachusetts lobbyist were convicted by a federal jury today of racketeering, fraud, obstruction of justice and tax crimes.

Dana A. Pullman, 60, of Worcester, and Anne M. Lynch, 71, of Hull, were convicted following a 20-day jury trial of one count of racketeering conspiracy, one count of honest services wire fraud, three counts of wire fraud, one count of obstruction of justice and one count of conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service. Pullman was also convicted of two additional counts of wire fraud and two counts of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return. Lynch was convicted of an additional count of obstruction of justice and four counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of a false tax return. U.S. Senior District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock scheduled sentencing for March 8, 2023. Pullman and Lynch were arrested and charged in August 2019 and subsequently indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2019.

“Being a police officer is a noble and valued profession. It is an honor and privilege to serve as a member of law enforcement. With that honor and privilege comes immense responsibility. Regardless of whether some may think it’s unfair, as members of law enforcement, we are and should be held to a higher standard. Our fundamental responsibility is plain and simple – to protect and serve. We enforce the law, we do not break it,” said United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins. “Police union leadership is supposed to fight for the rights, benefits and protections of their members. Not their own self-interests for personal financial gain. Mr. Pullman and Ms. Lynch concocted a fraudulent scheme to game the system for their personal financial benefit, all under the guise of looking out for hard working union members. Today’s conviction affirms that. Their criminal conduct has diminished the already strained relationship and lack of trust some communities feel toward law enforcement. And when communities don’t trust law enforcement, we are all less safe.”

“Today’s verdict proves that Dana Pullman and Anne Lynch were paid to look out for the best interests of Massachusetts State Police union members, but instead were only looking out for themselves, lining their pockets with thousands of dollars in bribes and kickbacks and defrauding at least two different companies seeking to do business with the state,” said Joseph Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division. “They crossed over the thin blue line to committing felonies while the real victims in this case—hard-working troopers, taxpayers, and businesses—were short changed and shut out of the honest government services they deserve. The FBI has zero tolerance for those who exploit their official positions for personal gain and then try to obstruct our investigation into their criminal conduct.”

“Instead of honestly representing the interests of the more than 1,500 Massachusetts law enforcement professionals, these defendants cared more about enriching themselves through a series of bribes and kickbacks. Today’s guilty verdict affirms that their actions violated the trust given to them and this conduct will not go unpunished,” said Joleen D. Worms Revived After 46,000 Years Frozen in Siberian Permafrost

Scientists want to understand how the worms survived in extreme conditions for extraordinarily long periods of time.

At a time when the mighty woolly mammoth roamed the Earth, some 46,000 years ago, a minuscule pair of roundworms became encased in the Siberian permafrost.

Millennia later, the worms, thawed out of the ice, would wriggle again, and demonstrate to scientists that life could be paused — almost indefinitely.

The discovery, published this week in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS Genetics, offers new insight into how the worms, also known as nematodes, can survive in extreme conditions for extraordinarily long periods of time, in this case tens of thousands of years.

In 2018, Anastasia Shatilovich, a scientist from the Institute of Physicochemical and Biological Problems in Soil Science RAS in Russia, thawed two female worms from a fossilized burrow dug by gophers in the Arctic.

The worms, which were buried approximately 130 feet in the permafrost, were revived simply by putting them in water, according to a news release from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany.

Called Panagrolaimus kolymaensis, after the Kolyma River in Russia, where they were found, the worms were sent to Germany for further study. The creatures, which have a life span measured in days, died after reproducing several generations in the lab, researchers said.

Using radiocarbon dating, researchers determined the specimens were frozen between 45,839 and 47,769 years ago, during the late Pleistocene.

The roughly millimeter-long worms were able to resist extreme low temperatures by entering a dormant state called cryptobiosis, a process researchers at the institute have been trying to understand.

No nematodes had been known to achieve such a dormant state for thousands of years at a time, Teymuras Kurzchalia, a professor emeritus at the institute who was involved in the study, said on Saturday.

“The major take-home message or summary of this discovery is that it is, in principle, possible to stop life for more or less an indefinite time and then restart it,” Dr. Kurzchalia said.

Researchers identified key genes in the nematode that allow it to achieve the cryptobiotic state. The same genes were found in a contemporary nematode called Caenorhabditis elegans, which can also achieve cryptobiosis.

“This led us, for instance, to understand that they cannot survive without a specific sugar called trehalose,” Dr. Kurzchalia said. “Without this sugar, they just die.”

While there are no clear practical applications for a deep understanding of cryptobiosis, that should not be a reason to stop the research, Dr. Kurzchalia said.

The discovery of semiconductors, or of the double helix structure of DNA, he said, took decades to yield a practical use, but ultimately turned out to be revolutionary.

“That’s the interest of science,” he said. “You end somewhere you didn’t presume.”

Cryptobiosis could, perhaps one day, be engineered by humans, he added.

Another researcher in the study, Dr. Philipp Schiffer of the Institute for Zoology at the University of Cologne, said the more relevant application of the findings “is that in times of global warming we can learn a lot about adaptation to extreme environmental conditions from these organisms, informing conservation strategies and protecting ecosystems from collapsing.”

The Siberian permafrost has long offered the scientific community a window into the organisms of the distant past. Ancient viruses, mummified bodies and a suite of microscopic creatures have been resurrected from the ice over the years.

Amid the Covid pandemic, some have expressed concerns about unearthing ancient microorganisms, fearing that doing so could have deadly consequences for mankind.

Dr. Kurzchalia conceded that, theoretically, such a thing was possible, though he emphasized that the study of these organisms is conducted in sterile, lab-controlled settings.

A more prudent concern, in Dr. Kurzchalia’s view, is the threat of global warming significantly thawing the permafrost in Siberia. In that case, there would be no control over what is reintroduced to the world.

Though the ancient worms in the study died, that outcome was not unexpected given their life cycle, Dr. Kurzchalia said.

“Sleeping Beauty, when she came out, she didn’t live another 300 years,” he said.

About 2,000 ‘commandos’ would enter the fray in a bid to recapture the Crimean Peninsula “before Christmas,” Sunday Express claims

British instructors are training an elite Ukrainian unit that is supposed to help Kiev retake Crimea, the Sunday Express has claimed, citing sources. Ukrainian officials have been talking for months about plans to take back the Russian peninsula during its much-hyped counteroffensive, which has so far failed to live up to expectations in the West.

According to the report, more than 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers comprising “an elite commando brigade” arrived at a training camp in Devon in southwest Britain to prepare for an attack that is supposed to “recapture Crimea before Christmas.”

The brigade is expected to “form the tip of the spear” and will be supported by two other forces, the tabloid’s sources claimed. The Express also noted that the operation would involve combined strikes from air, land, and sea, with Kiev’s armored formations attempting to breach Russian defenses while being backed by long-range attacks using Western-supplied missiles.

An unnamed senior defense source told the paper that UK instructors aim to teach Kiev’s troops how to use NATO tactics to “shape the battle space” before committing forces for a decisive thrust.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky outlined Kiev’s ambition to reclaim Crimea through a major counteroffensive back in late April. However, when Ukraine launched its push against Russian lines in the early days of June, it failed to gain any ground and suffered heavy casualties, according to Moscow.

Despite apparent problems with the counteroffensive, Kirill Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence, claimed on Saturday that Kiev would take Crimea “soon,” without giving an exact timeline. Last year, he already predicted that this would happen in the spring of 2023, a projection that failed to come true.

Meanwhile, in March former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that,should Ukraine attempt to seize back Crimea, Moscow could resort to “all means of protection,” including its nuclear arsenal.

The Crimean Peninsula overwhelmingly voted to rejoin Russia in a public referendum in 2014 following a Western-backed coup in Kiev. Neither Ukraine nor Western countries have recognized its results.

Russian forces have intercepted a Ukrainian attack on the Crimean peninsulainvolving 25 drones, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said, adding that the raid caused no casualties or destruction.

In a statement early on Sunday, the ministry said Moscow had repelled “an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack with 25 aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles” on facilities in Crimea.

It said 16 Ukrainian drones were shot down by Russian air defenses while another nine were suppressed by electronic warfare, and crashed near Cape Tarkhankut in the western part of the peninsula.

Crimea, which serves as the key base for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, has come under recurring Ukrainian missile and drone attacks in recent months. On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported a similar raid involving17 drones, claiming all of them were downed. However, Sergey Aksyonov, the region’s leader, said the strike hit a local ammunition depot.

Earlier this month a Ukrainian UAV raid on the Crimean Bridge damaged a section of the roadway and claimed the lives of a Russian married couple, while injuring their teenage daughter. Moscow responded by intensifying missile strikes on Ukrainian military facilities in the port city of Odessa.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov vowed further attacks on Crimea, describing the strikes as “normal tactics to ruin the logistic lines of your enemy to stop the options to get more ammunition, to get more fuel, to get more food, etc.”

Former US president Donald Trump took aim at Joe Biden at a campaign stop in Pennsylvania on Saturday, branding his successor in the White House “the most corrupt president in American history.”

Trump reserved some stinging rhetoric for his Republican rival Ron DeSantis, too, also describing the Florida governor as a “son of a b*tch,” and said that financial donations towards his Republican rivals only serve to strengthen Biden’s efforts at re-election.

A decision by the Baltic states to prevent the movement of cargo ships carrying Russian fertilizer which are trapped in EU ports, ignores the economic interests of nations in need, President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday, characterizing the move as “irrational behavior.”

According to the head of state, some 200,000 tons of Russian fertilizer are still stuck in Baltic ports.

The move is allegedly motivated by a reluctance among EU member states to allow Moscow “to generate revenues from selling those shipments,” Putin said, highlighting thatRussian companies were prepared to give away the fertilizer for free.

“It’s just irrational behavior,” he lamented, adding that the steps taken by the Baltic states are impossible to explain, as they’ve blocked the cargoes “just because they’re Russian.”

The president said theEU countries “don’t give a fig about developing nations and the world’s poorest states,” adding that the West’s emphasis on Ukrainian grain shipments are just a “cover,” which makes the EU policy “twice as amoral.”

Putin stressed that the main beneficiaries of last year’s grain-movement deal were major traders, who’d managed to purchase Ukrainian grain at a hefty discount and then sell it at market prices “to prosperous countries.”

“How are the interests of developing countries and starving peoples related to this?” he asked, pointing out that the share of Ukrainian grain in world markets is less than 5%, while the share of grain from Russia is more than 20%.

Allowing Russian fertilizers to reach global markets was part of a landmark Black Sea safe-grain-shipment deal reached through mediation by the UN and Türkiye in July 2022, which unblocked Ukraine’s southern ports and allowed Kiev to begin exporting grain, while also granting concessions to Russia.

Earlier this month, Moscow refused to renew that deal, complaining that the West had failed to keep its promises on reconnecting its banks to the SWIFT international payment system, restarting a key ammonia pipeline, permitting imports of agricultural machinery and parts, and unblocking transportation insurance. In addition to the West failing to follow through on its end of the deal, Moscow claimed that Kiev had used the humanitarian corridors to funnel weapons into its Black Sea ports.

This week, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) began the main thrust of their counteroffensive and transferred thousands of additional troops for the attack, the New York Times reported, citing the Pentagon. According to the newspaper, these soldiers were in the reserve force and many of them were trained in the West. The site of the “main thrust” is south of Orekhov, in Zaporozhye Region. Some of the reserve formations that Kiev hadn’t pulled into battle before have already been transferred there. If Ukraine manages to break through the Russian defense, this will allow the AFU to move towards Tokmak and then to Melitopol near the Sea of Azov.

Other sources among US officials said the latest Ukrainian offensive could be a preparatory operation before the main thrust or it may provide reinforcement for the existing units.

Similar information was published a few days earlier by the German daily newspaper Bild, which stated that the second phase of the counteroffensive would begin immediately after the frontline territories are cleared of mines.

A statement by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also backs up these conclusions. Earlier, he said Ukraine may achieve success when it fully deploys all its resources.

Meanwhile, we are approaching a sort of anniversary – the AFU’s much-hyped counteroffensive has been going on for almost two months. However,everyone is fully aware that this operation isn’t going according to the original plan. This allows us to draw some conclusions.

What goals did Kiev set?

To begin with, we need to properly define some terms when speaking about Ukraine’s counteroffensive. For, as Napoleon Bonaparte said, to name something correctly is to understand it correctly. From a military point of view, it is incorrect to call this the “second wave,” “second stage,” or “second phase” of the AFU’s counteroffensive.When an offensive operation is planned and carried out, there are no “waves,” “phases,” or “stages.”

When an offensive is planned, two important things are determined: the operation’s immediate goal and its further goals. The immediate goal is usually to defeat the forces of the enemy’s first operational echelon, get to its main forces, and capture important frontiers to undermine the enemy’s capacity for strategic defense and create favorable conditions for the further course of the counteroffensive.

Capturing settlementslike Pyatikhatki, Rabotino, Urozhaynoye, Kleshcheyevka and othersis in no way an “immediate goal” of the AFU’s ongoing counteroffensive. Even the hypothetical re-capture of Artemovsk (Bakhmut) cannot be considered such. For the Ukrainian Army, the immediate goal would be at least the capture of Melitopol. Which is a major city, as opposed to a relatively small town.

So we may safely say that the AFU has not even gotten close to reaching its immediate goal in the course of the counteroffensive.

For this reason, discussing the AFU’s “further goals” is not even worthwhile. Theoretically, these could involve the defeat of the enemy’s first operational echelon, its operational (and in some cases, the nearest strategic) reserves, and the capture of key objects and areas in order to achieve the goals of the counteroffensive. For the AFU, a successful accomplishment of the counteroffensive’s further goals would mean a return to 1991 borders. But so far this remains only a dream for Ukraine’s military and political leadership. Consequently, we may say that thecounteroffensive operation has been carried out, and the set goals have not been achieved…

Ukraine’s controversial surrogacy industry booming – reports

Ukraine’s surrogacy industry is thriving despite the country’s conflict with Russia, The Guardian recently reported. However, alternate reports reveal that the industry is riddled with corruption and abuse, yet enjoys the protection of authorities in Kiev and Washington.

Ukraine has long been known as a surrogacy hotspot, with a quarter of the world’s surrogate babies born there in 2018. That percentage has likely increased since Moscow banned the practice for foreign couples last year, with Russian lawmakers citing the need to “prevent the trafficking of our children.”

The fighting in Ukraine hasn’t dulled demand, The Guardian reported on Wednesday, noting that more than 1,000 babies have been born in Ukrainian surrogacy clinics since Russia launched its military operation last year. Most of these clinics’ customers, the newspaper noted, hailed from Italy, Romania, Germany and Britain.

Some 600 of these babies were born at a clinic in Kiev operated by BioTexCom, a German-owned company that promises its wealthy clients “the joy of parenthood.”

For the Ukrainian women who rent out their wombs for BioTexCom’s customers, the process is significantly less joyous. Although these women are paid well – BioTexCom’s medical director, Igor Pechenoha, told The Guardian that surrogates receive around $22,000 for carrying a baby to term – they are often subjected to appalling living conditions during pregnancy.

One Ukrainian woman told Al Jazeera in 2018 that the German firm promised her an apartment for the duration, but forced her to share it with four other pregnant women, and to share a bed for seven months of her pregnancy. Another said that women who left their accommodation and failed to return before a curfew would be subjected to fines, as would women who criticized the company or attempted to communicate with the foreign parents.

“We were treated like cattle and mocked by the doctors,” she said.

BioTexCom’s staff know that they are taking advantage of poor Ukrainian women. Pechenoha admitted to Spanish investigative outlet La Marea in March that his company deliberately looks for women from poorer areas, as “logically, [the women] have to be from poorer places than our clients.”

“I have not met a single woman with a good economic situation who has decided to go through this process out of kindness,”Pechenoha said.

“The main concern of advocates on the ground in Ukraine is that legislators and even news organizations aren’t looking at this as a human rights violation,” Princeton University researcher Emma Lamberton told The Grayzone, which published a damning reporton the industry this week. “A government would never see human rights violations like child abuse as something to simply be regulated… instead it should be outlawed.”

Some Ukrainian lawmakers have tried to ban surrogacy. Viktoria Vahnier, a member of President Vladimir Zelensky’s ‘Servant of the People’ party introduced a bill last year that would have limited surrogacy services to Ukrainian parents, but the measure was defeated in parliament. Another Ukrainian MP, Oksana Bilozir, told Australia’s ABC News in 2018 that “business and their lobbyists”prevent lawmakers from restricting the practice.

Former Ukrainian general prosecutor Yuri Lutsenko claimed that he was handed an “untouchables list” by then-US ambassador Maria Yovanovitch when he took office in 2016.According to Lutsenko, this list named a host of powerful interests that Washington didn’t want him to investigate.

Nevertheless, Lutsenko placed BioTexCom founder Albert Tochilovsky under house arrest in 2018, as his office investigated allegations of fraud and human trafficking against the firm. Lutsenko was fired two years later, and his BioTexCom investigation has been stalled ever since, according to The Grayzone.

In a 2019 interview with Ukrainian news site Delo,Tochilovsky explained that keeping regulators away from his clinics was a key concern. “The most important thing,” he said, “is to prohibit law enforcement agencies from interfering with [our] work.”

Helicopter lost at sea during major US-Australia drill

Four airmen are missing after their MRH90 crashed into the ocean off Queensland on Friday

Four Australian airmen are missing after their helicopter went down into waters off the coast of Queensland during a joint military exercise with the US, prompting a search and rescue operation by Canberra’s military.

The crash occurred at around 10:30 pm local time on Friday, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said, noting that the MRH90 helicopter was flying a two-aircraft mission as part of the Talisman Sabre 2023 drills with the US Marines.

“Sadly, the four aircrew who were on board are yet to be found,” Marles said in a joint statement with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The Australian Defense Ministry later said “military and civilian search and rescue aircraft and watercraft” were conducting search and rescue efforts near the site of the incident, adding that the helicopter crashed in waters near Lindeman Island, located about 10 miles (15 kilometers) off the coast of Queensland.

According to the Associated Press, a rescue helicopter spotted a wreckage in the vicinity of the suspected crash site, though officials have not confirmed whether the debris came from the missing aircraft.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who are visiting Australia for talks with senior military leadership, spoke about the search efforts on Saturday.

“It’s always tough when you have accidents in training, but… the reason that we train to such high standards is so that we can be successful and we can protect lives when we are called to answer any kind of crisis,” Austin said.

Australian Brigadier Damian Hill, who directs this year’s iteration of the Talisman Sabre drills, said the exercises would be placed on hold.

Scheduled to run from July 22 through August 4, the wargames are held every two years by Washington and Canberra. This year’s exercise is set to be the largest to date, with some 30,000 troops from 13 nations taking part in a wide range of maneuvers, including amphibious landings, simulated air and ground combat, as well as naval operations.

The crash near Queensland is the second accident involving a MRH90 this year, with another plummeting into the ocean off the coast of New South Wales during a nighttime counterterrorism drill last March. All 10 crewmembers survived.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s son arrested in money laundering probe

Nicolas Petro, son of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, has been arrested as part of an investigation into money laundering and illicit enrichment, the attorney general’s office said early on Saturday.

The younger Petro, a politician in Atlantico province, had welcomed the investigation when it began in March and has previously called accusations that he took money from drug traffickers in exchange for including them in his father’s peace efforts to end civil strife.

Colombian media showed videos of both being escorted to a government plane by security agents in armored vehicles and motorcycles.

Petro said on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, that it was painful for one of his children to be jailed, but that the attorney general’s office had all guarantees to proceed according to the law.

“To my son I wish luck and strength. May these occurrences forge his character and may he reflect about his own errors,” the president said. “As I affirmed to the attorney general I will not intervene nor pressure his decisions, may the law freely guide the process.”

Colombia’s procurator said in a separate statement it will intervene in the upcoming hearings of Petro’s son and his ex-wife to ensure the legal system is respected, as well as the fundamental rights and guarantees of all parties.

Residents in San Dimas, California received a scare after suspicious packages parachuted into their neighborhood on Thursday night.

The suspicious packages garnered the attention of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad who were called to the scene.

Once on the scene, the bomb squad team was able to find a yellow and red balloon attached to two taped-up packages.

After analyzing the packages, authorities discovered the package contained vials and was being used for a school weather project.

Never-Trumper Pierre Omidyar, the billionaire founder of eBay, has showered almost $2M on groups that call for defunding the police, including the website DefundPolice.org.

But that hasn’t stopped him from investing in private security start-ups and making money off of individuals and businesses desperate to keep themselves safe.

In June 2020, in response to protests over the police killing of George Floyd, funds tied to Omidyar’s philanthropic network announced donations of $500,000 to organizations supporting the protest movement.

The Movement for Black Lives, an “abolitionist” coalition of activists seeking to eradicate public policing, was one of the recipients of Omidyar money that year. Disclosures show that the Omidyar Network provided $300,000 to the group.

The website DefundPolice.org, which provides legislative and communication tools for activists to advocate for cutting police funding, is a collaboration between Omidyar-funded groups. The sponsors of the organization include PolicyLink, which received $700,000 from Omidyar Network and Law for Black Lives, a group that received $600,000 from the Democracy Fund, another Omidyar foundation.

According to Fox News, “At the same time, Omidyar was privately investing in companies capitalizing on the growing demand for security services. Bond, a New York-based company that bills itself as the Uber for bodyguards, listed Omidyar as one of its main investors. Bond referenced ‘civil unrest’ and rising crime in its 2020 marketing materials.”

The Gateway Pundit reported on a report that focused on three billionaires, including Omidyar, with foreign roots that helped finance the 2020 Democrats Dark Money Machine.

A congressional official described the well-hidden code as a “ticking time bomb”

The US government is searching for a malicious computer code it believes Chinese hackers have been able to plant inside the networks controlling power grids, communications systems and water supply at US military bases at home and abroad, American officials have told the New York Times (NYT).

The perpetrators were “probably working for the People’s Liberation Army,” the paper’s Saturday article said. The piece didn’t explain how Washington was able to link the malware to China or to its military.

The unnamed US Army, intelligence and national security officials who talked to the NYT suggested that the code might be activated by Beijing to disrupt American military operations in case of a conflict, including the one that could occur around Taiwan.

China considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory, while the US, which supports the government in Taipei, promised to defend the self-governed island if Beijing tries to use force to bring it under control.

A source in Congress described the malware as essentially “a ticking time bomb” that could give China the ability to interrupt or slow down US military deployments or resupply operations, by disabling key utilities at American bases.

The officials also expressed concern that the impact of the code could be even broader, as the same infrastructure is often used to supply civilian homes and businesses.

The first hints of the problem emerged in May when Microsoft detected strange computer code in telecommunications systems on the Pacific island of Guam, where major American air and naval bases are located, and elsewhere in the US territory. But a malware spread in the networks has turned out to be much greater since then, with the US military and security agencies currently working to determine its full scope, the NYT said.

When addressed for comment, the acting spokesman for the US National Security Council Adam R. Hodge, assured media that “the Biden administration is working relentlessly to defend the US from any disruptions to our critical infrastructure, including by coordinating interagency efforts to protect water systems, pipelines, rail and aviation systems, among others.”

Saudi Arabia is now deigning to play peace-maker in Ukraine, having issued an invitation to several developing nations in order to woo them into Kiev and the West's corner on the conflict. This has included an invite for China, India, Brazil and South Africa to come to Jeddah in early August.

Ukrainian government representatives will reportedly also be there, but have yet to publicly confirm the plans, reported by The Wall Street Journal over the weekend. A top level White House official is also expected to represent the United States.

However, as The Associated Press cites, "Planning for the event is being overseen by Kyiv and Russia is not invited, the official said."

The summit, described as having as a vital focus the exploration of ways to achieve peace, is scheduled for Aug.5 and 6, and is to include representatives from some 30 countries total. The initial reporting stated the hosts hope to frame the basis for future peace negotiations with Russia toward Ukraine's favor.

And once again, fence-sitting China appears to be in the diplomatic crosshairs. "Western diplomats said that Saudi Arabia was picked to host the second round of talks partly in hopes of persuading China, which has maintained close ties to Moscow, to participate," wrote WSJ on Saturday.

"Riyadh and Beijing maintain close ties. Earlier this year, China helped negotiate a recent thaw between Saudi Arabia and its regional foe, Iran, months after the Saudis hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping at an Arab summit," the publication noted.

Of course, there's significant and dark irony in Saudi Arabia’s 'bone saw' prince playing host to a summit supposedly all about achieving 'peace'.

His relations with Washington and the West have been strained since 2018, but also after not cooperating with the US on energy, as months ago Riyadh defiantly cut oil production and thereby raised prices.

Rapper Young Thug’s Legal Team Requests to Dismiss Goat Sacrificing Ritual Video Evidence in Upcoming Trial

The legal team of acclaimed rapper Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, has filed a motion to prevent a video showcasing the arrest of co-defendant Shannon “SB” Stillwell from being presented in the upcoming trial.

Williams’ attorney Brian Steel has filed a motion to prevent the jury from seeing a video of Stillwell’s arrest during a religious ritual.

The motion was filed on Thursday with the Superior Court of Fulton County, aimed at keeping the video footage out of Williams’ Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) trial.

The video in question captures the arrest of Stillwell during a religious ceremony on March 17, 2022. The ritual allegedly involved the sacrifice of goats, a practice the defense team argues is irrelevant to the charges against Williams and only serves to prejudice the jury.

According to Channel 2’s Michael Seiden, who obtained a copy of the motion, attorneys argue that Stillwell’s arrest is related to a separate murder charge unrelated to Williams’ case.

Williams, along with fellow Atlanta rapper Gunna and 27 others, were indicted under Georgia’s RICO Act in May 2022.

Williams and 27 other people were indicted along with fellow Atlanta rapper Gunna in May using Georgia’s RICO Act. The 88-page indictment claims they are part of the Young Slime Life, or YSL, a subset of the Bloods street gang. Prosecutors allege those named in the indictment have engaged in violent criminal activity in the city since 2012.

Young Thug, Martinez Arnold (also known as Duke) and Deamonte Kendrick (also known as Yak Gotti) are accused of possessing and attempting to sell marijuana and cocaine in May 2022. The indictment says they were possessing multiple guns: a GLOCK 357, a FN firearm, a GLOCK 19, a Smith & Wesson M&P and a GLOCK 45 with a “converter switch and extended magazine.” The GLOCK 45 modified into a machine gun resulted in another gun possession charge.

The total list of charges against 28 accused is up to 65 counts. The reindictment accused three additional people — Deamonte Kendrick, also known as Yak Gotti; Shannon Stillwell, AKA Shannon Jackson or SB; and Quamarvious Nichols, AKA Qua — of separate gun charges.

Williams’ legal team is concerned that biases against the religious practice could taint the jury’s perception of the case. As stated in the motion, “A reasonable person can also view this as character evidence as well.”

Williams and Stillwell are part of a group of over two dozen individuals charged in a wide-ranging gang indictment involving alleged members of the Young Slime Life (YSL) gang. Only eight defendants, including Williams and Stillwell, are currently involved in the trial, while the rest are being tried separately, according to WSB-TV.

Prosecutors allege that the gang has committed numerous crimes in Atlanta, “terrorizing the city” for their own profit. The trial, which has been in the jury selection phase since January, has been closely watched due to its high-profile defendants and the significant charges at stake.

On the day that Hunter Biden was scheduled to go to court, the U.S. government conveniently decided to hold a big congressional extravaganza on UFOs, complete with sketchy “whistleblowers” who claim the government is hiding dead aliens.

Of course, many folks on the right saw this as nothing more than a coordinated distraction maneuver, similar to how they “re-arrest” President Trump every time Joe has a scandal pop up. Although, overall, the feeling from a lot of Americans was rather “meh.”

Revolver actually published a fantastic article on this very topic — Americans basically shrugged their shoulders at the entire UFO circus and went about their business as usual.

It really makes you wonder, has the CIA lost their touch? That’s what Revolver’s own Darren Beattie is wondering after he dug up a document that reveals something very interesting. It turns out that the CIA likes to use “UFOs” to distract the public. According to Darren’s tweet, the CIA used this very tactic in Guatemala, of all places.

As the evidence for at least an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden mounts, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and co-host Ben Ferguson discussed the latest bombshell - 170 suspicious activity reports (SARs) from six banks over the past few years - on their podcast with House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY).

As Townhall reports, these SARs are submitted and sent to the Treasury Department when banks "have a strong suspicion" that a crime has been committed, so as to protect the bank.

As Comer emphasized, these are submitted "very seldom."

If someone were to have two, the chairman explained, it would be hard for that person to open up a bank account.

Submitting an SAR, Comer added, also is "inviting the regulators to come in and regulate," which is the last thing banks want.

The 170 reports are thus quite significant.

To paint the scene here, Comer explained that what might trigger an SAR is "a large transaction that comes out of the blue."

Maricopa County Blames Printers for Election Chaos, But the Manufacturer Is Saying Not So Fast

The manufacturer of a large percentage of the ballot printers used in Maricopa County in November’s election took the county to task for trying to shift blame regarding the chaos that occurred on Election Day.

A 2022 General Election Internal Review, dated July 26, identifies the OKI ballot-on-demand printers malfunctioning at many of the 223 vote centers operating in the county on Election Day as the primary culprit, with other issues, including the size of the print image projected on the paper, also contributing to the Election Day problems.

In a Friday email to The Western Journal, a representative from the Maricopa County Elections Department said that 72 percent of the polling locations had OKI printers, 25 percent had Lexmark printers, and 3 percent had both types.

The county’s report stated that between 32 and 34 percent of the ballots printed on Election Day were unable to be read by the tabulators at polling locations due to various issues related to the ballot-on-demand printers, but primarily due to the thickness of the paper used.

Hours-long lines developed at many of the polling sites as tabulators could not read the ballots being printed.

Republican National Committee lawyer Mark Sonnenklar testified at 2022 Arizona GOP nominee Kari Lake’s election challenge trial in December that his team of roving attorneys on Election Day found these problems occurred in 132 locations, or about 59 percent in all.

The county put the figure at 70 locations last fall, according to The Washington Post.

Given that Republicans typically vote 3-to-1 over Democrats on Election Day and the 17,000 votes separating Lake and Democrat Katie Hobbs, Sonnenklar testified, “There’s no question in my mind that had there not been tabulator issues at 132 vote centers, this election would have ended up with Kari Lake winning.”

The county’s 2022 General Election Internal Review findings regarding the OKI printer problems mirror what former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Ruth McGregor concluded in a report she submitted to the county in April.

VoteBeat’s Jen Fifield reported McGregor had been hired by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to conduct an independent review of what happened on Election Day.

Pediatrician Fired After Raising Alarm on COVID-19 Vaccines During US Senate Event

A medical expert was terminated by one of her employers after raising concerns about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines during an event held by a U.S. senator, according to newly disclosed documents.

After Dr. Renata Moon (who will appear on “American Thought Leaders” premiering Mon. Aug. 30, 7:30 p.m. ET) testified during the December 2022 event on Capitol Hill, Washington State University officials told her that they were alerting a state medical commission because she allegedly promoted misinformation, one of the documents shows.

The Washington Medical Commission (WMC) has said that doctors who offer misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, treatments, and preventative measures “erode the public trust in the medical profession and endanger patients,” that people should lodge complaints against doctors who allegedly provide misinformation, and that it may revoke the licenses of doctors who are found to have spread misinformation.

Drs. Jeff Haney and James Record, Washington State University officials, referenced the commission in a letter to Dr. Moon dated March 3, 2023.

“The WMC has asked the public and practitioners to report possible spread of misinformation. There are components of your presentation that could be interpreted as a possible spread,” they wrote. “As such, we are ethically obligated to make a report to the WMC to investigate possible breach of this expectation.”

The university informed Dr. Moon in June 2023 that it was effectively firing her by not renewing her appointment as a clinical associate professor of medicine, according to other documents reviewed by The Epoch Times.

“At this time, the needs of the college are moving in a different direction and your participation is no longer required,” Drs. Haney and Record wrote.

More detailed reasoning was not provided.

“This is not about my personal situation with the school. This is about freedom of speech for all Americans,” Dr. Moon told The Epoch Times in an email. “We must create an ethical healthcare system that is concerned only with the well being of individual patients and not the financial interests of massive corporations. We are dealing with conflicts of interest that are larger than any of us ever imagined.”

Testimony

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) convened Dr. Moon and other experts, including Drs. Peter McCullough and Robert Malone, to talk about COVID-19 vaccines. The event was titled, “COVID-19 Vaccines: What They Are, How They Work, and Possible Causes of Injuries.”

Dr. Moon testified that she had only seen two or three cases of myocarditis, a form of heart inflammation, while practicing for more than 20 years. But after the COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out, she said, she has been seeing more cases, and heard about others from fellow doctors.

“There’s clearly been a massive increase,” Dr. Moon said.

"This is a unit which is going to produce intelligence for both of our defence forces … and I think that's important."

Mr Marles' declined to say what the joint intelligence centre would work on, and the joint communique issued after AUSMIN says only that it will look at "analysing issues of shared strategic concern in the Indo-Pacific."

But US analysts from the Defense Intelligence Agency and their Australian counterparts say they are very likely to focus sharply on China's military footprint in the region and its moves to cement security ties with countries across Asia and the Pacific.

The Defence Minister also denied the United States was making the move because it had been unsettled by the security pact signed by China and Solomon Islands last year — a move which blindsided Australian officials and undermined American confidence in Canberra's intelligence capabilities in the Pacific.

"This directly contradicts everything he said in committee hearing to me," Paul said about Fauci.

Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, announced that he formally sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department regarding Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director.

Paul cited an email from February 2020 in which Fauci wrote that scientists discussed whether COVID-19 was produced through genetic engineering at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

"This suspicion was heightened by the fact that scientists in Wuhan University are known to have been working on gain-of-function experiments to determine the molecular mechanisms associated with bat viruses adapting to human infection, and the outbreak originated in Wuhan," he wrote in the email, which was published by RealClearNews reporter Philip Wegmann on Saturday.

"This directly contradicts everything he said in committee hearing to me, denying absolutely that they funded any gain-of-function, and it’s absolutely a lie. That’s why I sent an official criminal referral to the DOJ," Paul wrote on Twitter in response to Wegmann's tweet.

During congressional questioning in May, Paul pressed Fauci on gain-of-function research in Wuhan, to which Fauci responded, "I've never lied before Congress."

Fauci also told Paul, who was a practicing ophthalmologist before being elected to Congress: "You don't know what you're talking about."

Paul has heavily criticized Fauci before, including for receiving taxpayer funded security even in retirement.

What Does It Mean To Be 'Metagender' Or 'Demiromantic'? This School District Is Teaching Kids All About It

An Oregon school district is teaching tenth-grade students a variety of gender identities such as “metagender,” as well as the difference between sexual orientation and “romantic orientation,” according to documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

In a sexual education curriculum for tenth graders, Hillsboro School District, the fourth largest district in Oregon, teaches students that sexual orientation, who you are attracted to physically, and “romantic orientation,” who one is romantically attracted to, are separate from one another and do not need to correlate, according to documents obtained by the DCNF. The curriculum, created by teachers and counselors, teaches students the definitions of “panromantic” and “demiromantic,” as different types of “romantic orientations.”

The curriculum defines “panromantic” as someone who is romantically attracted to someone regardless of gender and defines “demiromantic” as when one doesn’t feel romantic attraction “until a close bond is formed.”

The curriculum gives students three examples of how gender identity, sex assigned at birth, gender expression, sexual orientation and romantic orientation can all be different and work together. One example shows an individual named “Cece” who uses she/her pronouns, identifies as a female, has male genitalia, and is both sexually and romantically attracted to men.

Another example shows an individual named “Joey” who uses he/him pronouns, identifies as a male, has male genitalia and is not attracted to men, women or other genders either sexually or romantically. A third example in the curriculum explains an individual named “Casey” who uses they/them pronouns, is intersex, has both a masculine and feminine gender expression, and is not attracted to men, women or other genders, either sexually or romantically.

“Our CSE [Comprehensive Sexuality Education] curriculum was created by teachers and counselors, in collaboration with and adapting resources from the State of Oregon, local community organizations and curriculum publishers,” a Hillsboro School District spokesperson told the DCNF. “You can find a list of the CSE lessons and the Oregon Health Education Standards they meet on our website. Our teachers must teach the standards and are given training and support to do so; however, if they do not feel comfortable or confident in delivering CSE lessons, they can request that other trained staff members do so on their behalf.”

Students are also taught different pronouns aside from “she/her” and “he/him,” including “neutral pronouns” such as “ze/zir” and “they/them,” the curriculum shows. The sexual education curriculum teaches students that they can have gender identities that don’t align with their biological sex including, but not limited to, “metagender,” a person who identifies as neither cisgender nor transgender, and “gender fluid,” which is defined as an identity that varies over time.

Students learn different “romantic orientation” definitions including “biromantic,” which is when one person is romantically attracted to multiple genders, and “aromantic,” which is defined as someone who experiences little to no romantic attraction, the curriculum shows.

Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill allowing non-citizens to become police officers in the state, sparking outrage from some in the state.

Pritzker signed the bill, HB 3751, into law along with more than 130 other bills on Friday. The bill allows anyone legally authorized to work and carry a firearm under federal law to become a police officer or sheriff's deputy. While the bill states that it is effective Jan. 1, 2024, Pritzker's office says it is effective immediately.

The legislation passed in May with a 37-20 vote in the Senate, as two Democrats joined Republicans to vote against the bill.

House Republicans unanimously supported the bill in a vote to pass it and send it to the Senate. After the Senate amended the bill slightly to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to apply to become police officers, just 7 out of 40 Republicans opposed the updated legislation in the 118-member chamber.

The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police criticized the legislation earlier this month, according to local outlet KHQA.

"What message does this legislation send when it allows people who do not have legal status to become the enforcers of our laws?" the order asked. "This is a potential crisis of confidence in law enforcement at a time when our officers need all the public confidence they can get."

Illinois Republican state Sen. Chapin Rose voiced opposition to the bill in May when it was debated in his chamber.

"It’s just a fundamentally bad idea," he said. "I don’t care where this individual is from. Australia — they should not be able to arrest a United States citizen on United States soil."

The US Department of Defense is examining how an engineer at an Air Force base in Tennessee managed to steal $90,000 worth of radio equipment and penetrate the networks of 17 Pentagon facilities, Forbes reported on Saturday. The suspect also reportedly accessed FBI communications.

The government received a tip from a contractor at Arnold Air Force Base in Tennessee, who alleged that a 48-year-old engineer at the facility had been taking government radio technology home for his own use, Forbes reported, citing a search warrant.

When law enforcement raided the man’s home, they discovered that he had “unauthorized administrator access” to the communications infrastructure of 17 military installations, and was running Motorola radio programming software on his computer, giving him access to “the entire Arnold Air Force Base communications system,” the warrant reportedly stated.

A forensics report on items seized from the engineer’s house reportedly revealed that he had flash drives containing passwords for the Air Force’s Training and Education Command’s radio network, “local law enforcement radio programming files,” and “Motorola radio programming files” which displayed a warning that they were US government property when opened.

The report also claimed that the man had possible access to the communications of the FBI and several Tennessee state agencies, without elaborating further.

Forbes withheld the man’s name, as he had not been charged by the time the article was published. Investigators are reportedly treating the incident as a “critical compromise” of security, according to the warrant.

The incident comes three months after hundreds of Pentagon documents were leaked onto a gaming server, allegedly by a US Air National Guardsman based in Massachusetts. The documents revealed the presence of US special forces in Ukraine, the inadequacies of the Ukrainian military as it prepared for its counteroffensive against Russian forces, and the US’ spying on its allies throughout the conflict.

The alleged leaker, Jack Teixeira, was charged last month with six counts of retaining and transmitting classified information. If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each count.

Leftist billionaire George Soros poured millions of dollars into Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential bid and generously padded the campaign coffers of many Democratic Party candidates in 2016. Soros’s donations to GOP candidates, however, have mostly flown under the radar.

Soros gave $202,700 to Republican presidential candidate John Kasich, making Soros one of the Kasich campaign’s top funders, according to a Feb. 5 report by WorldNetDaily (WND).

The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks today, although the brightening Moon will make spotting shower meteors a challenge. Fortunately, the Moon sets about three hours before sunrise, providing a short but effective window for trying to catch early-morning meteors.

An hour before sunrise, the radiant is some 25° above the southwestern horizon. The Southern Delta Aquariids’ radiant lies in Aquarius, about halfway between the star 3rd-magnitude Skat and the similarly bright star Deneb Algedi in eastern Capricornus. This year, however, there’s another landmark to help you find it: Magnitude 0.5 Saturn is about 7° above (northeast of) the radiant. So, you can find Saturn in the sky and drop down a little to locate the point from which shower meteors will appear to radiate.

However, once you’ve found this point, look a little south or west of it — this is where you’re likely to spot the best meteors with the longest trains, rather than at the radiant itself. The Southern Delta Aquariids are expected to produce roughly 25 meteors per hour around the peak, so while it’s not going to be a stunning show, you can expect to catch at least a few bright shooting stars.

Ukrainians are Germany’s biggest foreign welfare recipient group – media

People from Ukraine account for almost 30% of all foreigners getting welfare payments in Germany, Bild has reported

Ukrainians residing in Germany have emerged as the biggest grouping of foreign nationals relying on government welfare payments, the tabloid Bild reported on Saturday, citing data from the German Federal Employment Agency (BA).

Out of 5.5 million welfare recipients in Germany, only about half are German citizens, the media outlet reported. As of March 2023, almost 2.6 million people getting “standard benefits” from the state were foreigners, according to BA’s Migration Monitor program.

Ukrainians constitute the largest proportion of non-German welfare recipients, amounting to about 30% of their number. Syrians form the second-largest group, accounting for another 20%. According to government data, as many as 65.6% of Ukrainians living in Germany – or 707,700 people – receive financial aid from the government.

More than half of all Syrians residing in the country, as well as 47.1% of Afghans living there, are also dependent on the German welfare system, Bild reported, adding that, among Germans themselves, 5.3% are on welfare.

People entitled to welfare payments get an average of €502 ($554) for a single person and €451 ($497) per person for a couple each week. Persons with kids get an additional €318 ($350) and €420 ($463), depending on the child’s age. The state also pays for the rent, heating and education of eligible persons.

Asylum seekers and people with the so-called “tolerated stay” status could get between €369 ($407) and €410 ($452) weekly, depending on the circumstances, plus an additional €278–€364 ($306–$401) per child if applicable. Only those who are officially granted asylum in Germany could then apply for “standard benefits.”

This rule does not affect Ukrainians, though. Under the existing regulations, they do not apply for asylum and are automatically entitled to regular welfare payments, according to Bild. Berlin allocated a total of €43.8 ($48.3 billion) for welfare payments and associated costs within this year’s budget, the media outlet reported.

The existing scheme sparked criticism from Carsten Linnemann, the general secretary of Germany’s biggest opposition party – the Christian Democratic Union. The conservative politician demanded a “fundamental” overhaul of the welfare system, which he said should be more focused on the immigrants’ “integration”into the German labor market.

“We have a shortage of skilled workers and some 2.5 million unemployed at the same time, as well as a high level of immigration into the social system,” he said, demanding the government do more to “get as many people as possible out of the social assistance [system] and into the job market.”

A recent survey conducted jointly by several German research institutions and the federal migration agency showed that only 18% of Ukrainian refugees in Germany had found a job.At the same time, 44% of them said they would like to stay in the country. The number of those willing to remain has grown by five percentage points, up from 39% in a poll conducted last summer.

Germany has accepted more than one million Ukrainians since the outbreak of the conflict a year and a half ago. The large influx of Ukrainians placed a strain on the EU’s biggest economy. In October 2022, 23 municipal leaders across the country warned that local authorities had exhausted all resources to aid new arrivals. In February 2023, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called for a more even distribution of Ukrainian refugees among EU member states.

Kiev and Washington are to enter into talks on future "specific" US security guarantees for Ukraine in early August, an aide to President Vladimir Zelensky, Andrey Yermak, told journalists on Sunday. The negotiations are expected to start as early as next week, he added.

Yermak described a set of security arrangements as a temporary measure needed until Ukraine joins NATO, which he called "the most reliable security guarantee."According to the presidential aide, the set of measures, which is to be listed in a future bilateral agreement between Kiev and Washington, would involve military and financial assistance for Ukraine as well as "sanctions and punishment for the aggressor."

The supposed treaty would include "clearly defined forms and mechanisms of support,"Yermak said, without naming any of such mechanisms. According to the head of the presidential staff, Kiev expects the guarantees to ensure Ukraine’s "ability to win" the ongoing conflict with Moscow and "contain" what he called "Russia’s aggression" in the future.

Zelesnky’s aide also said that agreements with the US and other Western nations, which are supposed to follow Washington’s example, are to be based on a joint declaration issued by Ukraine and the G7 nations in Vilnius in mid-July. Yermak claimed that more than a "dozen"other nations had already joined this declaration as well but did not name any of them.

The Ukrainian media reported, though, that the deal reached byUkraine and the G7 nations does not involve any specific support mechanisms but only some "framework"agreements.

The text of the July declaration states that the G7 nations "will each work with Ukraine to establish specific, long-term bilateral security commitments and arrangements," including security assistance with "modern military equipment", support for Ukraine’s defense industry, training for Ukrainian troops, as well as information exchange and cyber defense aid.

Under the deal, Kiev is expected to "contribute positively to the security of partners" as well as continue the reforms demanded by its Western backers.

Neither the US nor any other G7 nations have commented on the alleged future bilateral security agreements with Ukraine so far.

In mid-July, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow has nothing against security guarantees for Ukraine as long as its own security is not compromised. "There is just one restriction," he said, adding that "ensuring one nation’s security should not pose a threat to another nation’s security."

"As for Ukraine’s NATO membership, we have repeatedly stated that it creates a threat to Russia’s security," the president said, adding that it was one of the very reasons that prompted Russia to launch its military campaign in Ukraine in the first place.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Introduces Legislation To Help Protect Disabled Vets, Make VA More Transparent

Republican Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna introduced legislation Wednesday that would help protect disabled veterans and aim to make the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) more transparent.

The Daily Caller first obtained a copy of the legislation, which is titled the “Send Them Treat Them Act.” The bill would specifically require the VA to update their Disability Claim Form to include information on the value of public Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQ).

If the bill is passed, the Disability Claim Form will be required to state how veterans have the opportunity to submit the DBQ form, completed by any physician of their choice, as part of their supporting medical evidence.

The form would state how veterans can get access to this form online and offline. The bill also requires the VA to update their website. On the page titled “How to file a disability claim,” the bill requires the VA to include the same information provided on the claim form so veterans can find the information more easily.

“As a veteran myself, the lack of transparency coming from the VA has always been very concerning to me, especially when wounded veterans are trying to file disability claims. Those who have served our nation courageously should be receiving the best care possible and we shouldn’t settle for anything less. My legislation ensures that those who are wounded in the service of our country have access to the highest quality of care which they rightfully deserve,” Luna told the Caller before introducing the bill.

Alabama Republican Rep. Barry Moore is co-sponsoring the bill and it has been endorsed by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

“The VFW supports the Send Them Treat Them Act that revises laws administered by the Secretary of Veteran Affairs to clarify information about the use of Disability Benefits Questionnaire forms and instructions on veterans’ rights when using them to file disability claims. The information provided to veterans on how to file claims should be clear and complete, making it easy for veterans to receive compensation for any disability they have resulting from their service to this country. The VFW thanks Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna for introducing this important piece of legislation,” Quandrea Patterson, the Associate Director of VFW’s National Legislative Service, said in a statement.

The VA was ranked as Americans’ least favorite government agency in a survey conducted in 2018.

Boy Scout Leaders Invite LGBTQ Advocates to Jamboree Camp

The Boy Scouts of America scouting organization is inviting “LGBTQ” advocacy at its national jamboree camp in West Virginia.

The advocacy was applauded by LGBTQ advocate Mike De Socio in the Washington Post. “There is value in the type of place it is becoming: one where any kid, of any race or gender or sexual orientation, feels at home,” De Socio wrote.

De Socio has campaigned for an official welcome for gays and lesbians, as well as transsexuals — dubbed “transgenders”– into the national organization. That demand contradicted the organization’s original purpose of redirecting and subsuming young men’s energy to help guide them through their turbulent adolescent years and puberty.

The current welcome for chaotic sexual diversity is being offered to teenagers as the scouting movement shrinks. There were just 15,000 scouts at the 2023 jamboree compared to 40,000 at the 2013 event.

The decline comes despite the welcoming policies, not because of them, De Socio insisted:

The meager attendance reflects the weather-beaten state of the Boy Scouts of America. Though its doors are now open to kids of all gender identities and sexual orientations, fewer than ever are accepting the invitation. The organization lost nearly half of its membership between 2019 and 2020. This national event represents one of its first steps out of a generational nadir brought about by the pandemic, a sexual abuse scandal and an ensuing bankruptcy.

The BSA had barely resolved its struggle over membership policies — fully admitting gay men in 2015 and trans boys in 2017, and then [girls] in 2018 — before facing an avalanche of sexual abuse claims.

But the turmoil had an upside. Scouts within the ranks seized the moment to press for a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. A collective dubbed “Scouts for Black Lives” successfully pushed the organization to commit to a slate of projects, including a new diversity merit badge required for Eagle Scout rank.

The “sexual abuse scandal,” bankruptcy, and membership decline came after intense establishment pressure on the scouts. For example, the establishment media slammed scout leaders for excluding gays and lesbian scoutmasters — and slammed them for not excluding all predatory gays and lesbians from local leadership roles.

The Associated Press reported the subsequent damage in 2021:

Membership for the BSA’s flagship Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs dropped from 1.97 million in 2019 to 1.12 million in 2020, a 43% plunge, according to figures provided to The Associated Press. Court records show membership has fallen further since then, to about 762,000.

Yet the new generation of national leaders is doubling down its welcome for teenage sexual advocacy by gays and lesbians — and even by the very different, no-boundaries “queer” and transsexual advocates — in the camps for teenagers, says De Socio:

Paige Morgan is one of the volunteers at the community space for girls. The 19-year-old from Scranton, Pa., also identifies as bisexual and has been glad to see the neighboring LGBTQ community space. “I know the people that are coming through here, like trans, nonbinary youth, the queer youth, are having a great time seeing themselves represented in a space that they love so much, that is scouting,” she said.

The scouts face competition from organizations that follow the scouts’ original focus on teenagers’ character development.

For example, Trail Life‘s mission is “to guide generations of courageous young men to honor God, lead with integrity, serve others, and experience outdoor adventure.”
