MSCHF's crumb-sized bag sells for over $63,000

A microscopic handbag "smaller than a grain of salt" has been sold for $63,750 (£50,569) at auction.

A microscope is needed to view the bag's design, with the tiny object measuring 657 x 222 x 700 micrometres.

"Narrow enough to pass through the eye of a needle, this is a purse so small you'll need a microscope to see it," the art collective behind the bag said.

Art collective MSCHF, based in Brooklyn, is known for its controversial designs.

They include shoes that contain human blood, trainers with holy water in the soles, a cologne that smells like WD-40, and giant red rubber boots.

This time, the collective decided to take the trend of small handbags to the extreme.

"There are big handbags, normal handbags and small handbags, but this is the final word in bag miniaturisation," MSCHF said in a post about the bag.

The bag features luxury handbag designer Louis Vuitton branding, but has no connection to the brand.

It is made of photopolymer resin and was created using a 3D printing technology often used to make tiny mechanical models and structures.

While it was being created, some of the tiny bag samples sent to be reviewed by the brand were so small that they were lost by the MSCHF team, the Smithsonian magazine reports.

But loss of the item should be less of a worry for the new bag's owner, as a microscope with a digital display was included in the purchase.

Microscopes with digital displays can be bought from online retailers and can range in price from $60 to thousands of dollars.

The auction site did not list the price of the microscope separately from the bag. Bids for the item started at $15,000.

Speaking about the use of Louis Vuitton branding on the bag, MSCHF's chief creative officer, Kevin Wiesner, told the New York Times earlier this month that the group had not sought permission from the brand to use it. "We are big in the 'ask forgiveness, not permission' school," he said.

MSCHF settled a lawsuit with Nike in 2021 over its sale of modified trainers containing a drop of human blood. It is also appealing in a Vans trademark lawsuit.

You plant the seeds in a population and they take it from there to produce all sorts of theories and stories about “what’s really going on.” You typically can’t tell how active the wind(rumor/gossip) is unless you watch the leaves move. Apply that logic to having to listen to a lot of rumors and gossip to get an idea of what’s going on in any happenings and you see the connection.

Green, itself, is a good omen as it means there’s plenty of opportunity to survive. Deserts are void of any of the green stuff, so it’s not the place you wanna be. Droughts denote a lack of knowledge/intel(water) and a surplus of attention(sunlight) that makes hiding impossible.

Applying the propaganda angle a bit more requires one to think about a stage play. What is a “prop”? Can cardboard-cutouts of trees, bushes, and landscape backdrops be used to hide the actors behind the curtain as they change in and out of their costumes?

That’s what propaganda is in the context of greenery. It’s anything that “props” up a story and makes it more believable. Stage-setting stuff. Background-objects.

In that same sense, greenery also has a place in folk lore. Bad things always tend to happen in the woods. All sorts of rituals and occult goings-on take place in the cover of night during the spring and summer seasons where there’s plenty of foliage to hide your torches, lanterns, candles, or what-have-you. Once again, the color green is representative of “cover.” You’re free to sacrifice all the children you want as soon as all the leaves pop out to block the villagers from spotting you dancing nude under the full moon light.

You know, Bohemian Grove stuff. That sort of thing…

Christine King Farris, the last living sibling of Martin Luther King Jr. died on Thursday at the age of 95.

After her brother’s assassination in 1968, Farris worked for decades with his widow, Coretta Scott King, in order to promote and preserve his legacy.

“She may not have always been on the line of the march, but that was true with a lot of the heroes of the civil rights movement,” Marcellus Barksdale, a history professor at Morehouse College, said. “Because of the luminescence of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, Christine kind of got dimmed by that, but she was no less important.”

Farris was born on September 11, 1927 in Atlanta and was the first child of the Reverand Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Christine Williams King.

Farris went on to help her brother’s widow build the King Center and helped teach his philosophy centered around nonviolent resistance. For years she never missed celebrating her brother’s birthday at Ebenezer Baptist church, where she was a member and where her father and grandfather also preached.

In 1960 she married Isaac Newton Farris, and the couple had two children, Angela Christine Farris Watkins and Isaac Newton Farris Jr.

Farris also wrote two children’s books about her own life, My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembering Growing Up With the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr., and March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World.

The King Center posted to Twitter on Thursday that it mourned the loss of the founding member, who also served as former vice-chair and treasurer.

Martin Luther King III also tweeted mourning her loss and saying that he, his wife, and his daughter were able to spent time with her in her final days.

Two days before the second week’s show, however, Stoney was ushered into the office of producer Shirley Bernstein, who began casually discussing “great love stories.” Did Stoney know who wrote a 19th-Century poem similar to “Hero and Leander”?

He didn’t. “It was Thomas Hood,” Bernstein said. Stoney was silent, not knowing what to say.

On the night of Dec. 29, 1957, the dueling Tennesseans were again in their respective isolation booths. Emcee Ralph Story asked Doll the $4,000 question. It was the one about Thomas Hood that Bernstein had asked Stoney.

Doll was a blank.

When Story asked him the question, Stoney almost jumped out of his skin and for an instant considered shouting: “I know the answer, because Shirley Bernstein gave it to me.” But he didn’t. “The answer is Thomas Hood,” Stoney said. He had won $4,000. But his heart sank, for he was off the show.

Stoney was outraged. He learned later from Doll that Bernstein had misleadingly told her to bone up on Shakespeare. In sabotaging Doll, moreover, the show kept Stoney from advancing.

So angry was Stoney that he wrote Time magazine, revealing all. No reply. Next Stoney repeated his story in a letter to The New York Times. Nothing doing. Stoney called the Nashville Tennessean. Not interested. Lastly, he appealed to Tullahoma News publisher Simon. “No one would believe you,” Simon replied.

The man who soon made it possible for Stoney and other estranged contestants to publicize charges of deception was a standby contestant on the CBS daytime show “Dotto,” who produced unrefutable evidence that the current champion won with pre-fed answers.

Reaction was almost immediate. The show was cancelled. Then came newspaper stories detailing former “Twenty-One” champion Herbert Stempel’s charges that he was ordered to lose to the more charismatic Charles Van Doren, a Columbia University professor who went on to become a national icon and regular on NBC’s “Today” program. Although the charges were denied, the dam was bursting. Other quiz show contestants began talking, too. One who was thrilled to unburden himself when a New York Times reporter called, was Stoney Jackson.

Stoney had already applied his winnings to the Christian Bowls debt and to adding a den to the family house. By now, he felt no guilt about “The $64,000 Question,” believing he earned his victory by studying so exhaustively. Still troubled by “The $64,000 Challenge,” however, he had relieved some of his uneasiness by sending Doll a token $400 check10%, he felt, was adequateand writing the show, describing his misgivings and vowing to repay the money in installments if necessary. The response was a written rebuke saying: “Your reasons for wanting to return the money are in your head.”

When word of Stoney’s disclosures in the New York Times reached Tullahoma, its citizens drew their own conclusions about his headand they weren’t flattering. No one berated him for being sucked into a scam offering dirty moneyonly for blabbing about it. For Tullahoma’s big tattletale, there would be no further hero worship, no more opportunities to speak or be honored at social events. A heavy aura of disgrace clung to Stoney, who somehow felt required to apologize for his truthfulness. “I was ordained a minister, not a saint,” he said. Tullahoma would testify to that.

Meanwhile, the quiz shows were investigated by a New York County Grand Jury, which lacked authority to subpoena out-of-state contestants such as Stoney. But a final appearance did await him–in front of the House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, which opened its hearings on the quiz shows Oct. 6, 1959.

Stoney followed Van Doren, who stunned the packed chamber by reversing his previous denials and confessing to having won $129,000 fraudulently. Then he left as he arrived, cocooned by an entourage whose presence signified his importance.

When the hearings reconvened after lunch, Van Doren had been succeeded by an entourage of one–Stoney.

Former President Donald Trump won an election to serve on the board of a rural fire district in Oregon after receiving two write-in votes, the Salem Statesman Journal reports—though as someone who doesn’t own property in the area, it’s unlikely the ex-president will be able to take on the role.

KEY FACTS

Trump earned two write-in votes to be a board member in the Hubbard Rural Fire Protection District, a seven-mile district in western Oregon that’s home to 5,000 residents.

No candidate formally ran for the position, and election records show Trump was one of five candidates to earn two votes, out of 25 ballots cast in total during the election on May 16.

The Statesman Journal reports the ex-president then won a tiebreaker based on multiple rolls of 12-sided dice, which took place on June 23 and was first reported Tuesday by the publication.

The Marion County Clerk’s office told the Statesman Journal the fire district will now have to determine whether Trump would be eligible to hold office, which is unlikely, given that the candidate must live or own property in the district.

Since Trump doesn’t live in the district, officials will see if any of the other candidates who earned two votes would want the job, local fire chief Michael Kahrmann told KOIN 6, though Central Oregon Daily News reports Trump will be asked about taking the position.

Trump’s presidential campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The fire board will next meet on July 12, which is when it will determine who will fill the position that Trump won. If no other candidates who earned two votes are interested in the role, the board will appoint someone to fill the vacancy, the Statesman Journal reports.

SURPRISING FACT

Election records show Trump also earned two votes to serve on the board of the nearby Marion County Fire District in the county’s local election, though he was beat out by other candidates in that race. Among the other write-in candidates for that role were Smokey the Bear, Snoop Dogg, Snoopy, actor Timothee Chalamet and Mickey Mouse, who earned six votes.

KEY BACKGROUND

While he didn’t formally announce his candidacy for the fire district board, Trump is running for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024 and is so far the clear frontrunner. A FiveThirtyEight average of 2024 polls finds 51.7% of GOP voters support Trump in the primaries as of June 29, far ahead of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who’s polling second at 23.5%, despite the former president’s recent federal and state indictments. The Oregon election marks the first government role that Trump has been elected to since 2016, after President Joe Biden beat him in the 2020 presidential race. Trump protested that election was “rigged” and mounted an extensive legal effort to overturn the results—which overwhelmingly failed—and there is no evidence to support his claims of widespread election fraud.

How the Israelis Hoodwinked JFK on Going Nuclear

Newly declassified documents reveal how David Ben-Gurion’s mumbles and a trick sightseeing tour helped Israeli officials pull the wool over Washington’s eyes on the real purpose of the Dimona reactor.

In October 1961, the CIA issued a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Israel, the first since the discovery of the Dimona reactor less than a year earlier, in which the CIA’s analysts assessed broadly the rationale and character of the Israeli nuclear program. For nearly 55 years it was kept secret, until it was quietly declassified in its entirety last year. It sheds light on what the U.S. intelligence community thought about the Israeli nuclear project in the first year of the Kennedy administration, while the Dimona reactor was still under construction. The CIA judgment was straightforward and unequivocal: Israel was placing itself in a position to “produce sufficient weapons-grade plutonium for one or two crude weapons a year by 1965-66, provided separation facilities with a capacity larger than that of the pilot plant now under construction are available.” At a minimum, U.S. intelligence knew that the Dimona project was about weapons capability, not about energy, electricity, or development — as the Israelis had tried to spin the ongoing project.

The declassified NIE also sheds light, by implication, on what American decision-makers, including President John F. Kennedy, must have thought about what Israeli leaders and top Israeli government officials had told them about the Dimona project. For example, this NIE makes apparent that Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion lied to, or at least misled, Kennedy during a private conversation with him just three months earlier. It also reveals that what top Israeli officials at Dimona had told visiting U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) scientists must have been false. Simply put, the CIA knew, or at least believed, that Israel was not telling the U.S. government the truth about Dimona — that the nuclear reactor was intended to develop a weapons capability.

This NIE, as well as other related documents, many of them never seen by scholars, from the first two years of the Kennedy administration, were published on April 21 by the National Security Archive, in collaboration with the Nuclear Proliferation International History Project and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. The declassified record reveals that more than any other U.S. president, Kennedy was more personally engaged with Israel’s nuclear program and more concerned about it than any of his successors. Israel was the first case of nuclear proliferation that he had to deal with as a president. And nuclear proliferation was JFK’s “private nightmare,” as Glenn Seaborg, his Atomic Energy Commission chairman, once noted. And more than any other country, Israel was the one that impressed upon Kennedy the complexity and difficulty of the problem of nuclear proliferation.

Worried that a nuclear-armed Israel would destabilize the Middle East, Kennedy wanted to bring his concerns directly to Ben-Gurion. The two leaders met to discuss the nuclear issue at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York on May 30, 1961. The meeting was possible thanks to a reassuring report about the first American visit at Dimona, by AEC scientists, 10 days earlier. ...

Kennedy, who was otherwise close to Israel, was furious with its ostensible nuclear weapons program.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Declassified documents show President John Kennedy warned Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in 1963 that U.S. support for the young country would be “seriously jeopardized” if Israel did not allow the United States periodic inspections of Israel’s nuclear reactor.

A telegram from Kennedy dated July 4, 1963, congratulates Eshkol on assuming the prime ministership after David Ben-Gurion’s resignation and recounts talks between Kennedy and Ben-Gurion about inspections at the reactor in Dimona.

“As I wrote Mr. Ben-Gurion, this government’s commitment to and support of Israel could be seriously jeopardized if it should be thought that we were unable to obtain reliable information on a subject as vital to peace as Israel’s effort in the nuclear field,” the telegram said.

The telegram was declassified in the 1990s but was not widely available until last week when the National Security Archives, a project affiliated with George Washington University, posted it on its website.

Kennedy, who was otherwise close to Israel, was furious with its ostensible nuclear weapons program, fearing that the Soviet Union could use it as leverage to maintain its influence in the Middle East.

Eshkol, caught off guard by the tone of the telegram, took seven weeks to assent, and the twice-yearly inspections continued until 1969, when President Richard Nixon ended them.

Also revealed in the trove of documents the National Security Archives posted is the origin of Israel’s oft-repeated credo that it would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons — a deliberately ambiguous statement that left Israel room to develop the weapons but not arm them.

Shimon Peres, then the deputy defense minister — he would later lead the country as prime minister for two stints and then become president — improvised the statement when he was surprised by Kennedy during a meeting that Peres had scheduled with Kennedy’s adviser, Myer Feldman, who also functioned as the administration’s liaison to Israel and the U.S. Jewish community. Unbeknownst to Peres, Kennedy and Feldman had planned the “surprise” encounter.

According to a Hebrew-language Foreign Ministry of Israel account of the April 2, 1963, meeting, Kennedy asked Peres into the Oval Office for 30 minutes and questioned him on Israel’s nuclear capacity.

“You know that we follow very closely the discovery of any nuclear development in the region,” Kennedy said. “This could create a very dangerous situation. For this reason, we monitor your nuclear effort. What could you tell me about this?”

Peres improvised, “I can tell you most clearly that we will not introduce nuclear weapons to the region, and certainly we will not be the first.”

Stanford University students have been forced to undergo 'free speech training' after their woke dean and law grads heckled a Trump appointed judge.

Judge Kyle Duncan was ambushed by associate dean Tirien Steinbach during a discussion in March as woke students clicked their fingers in support.

The Washington Free Beacon reported earlier this week that as part of the efforts of the University to turn over a new leaf they had students take part in a freedom of speech training session.

The online training is said to have required little to no time at all, with students able to skip the modules completely.

One student told the Free Beacon: 'On the day the training was due, I went to the attestation link provided by the university, checked a box confirming I watched the videos, and that was the end of the matter. Whole process took 10 seconds.'

The Free Beacon reported that students had been given six weeks to watch five prerecorded videos, most about an hour long, then asked to sign a form attesting that they had done so.

The videos could be played on mute, and the form could be accessed without opening the training letting students tune out the modules or skip them entirely.

On March 22, Stanford Law Dean Jenny Martinez issued a memorandum responding to the incident earlier that month,

Martinez wrote: 'Enforcement of university policies against disruption of speakers is necessary to ensure the expression of a wide range of viewpoints.

'Lawyers in training must learn to confront injustice or views they don’t agree with and respond as attorneys.'

Judge Duncan had been ambushed by Steinbach who went on a six minute rant, which she had written down, condemning his life's work.

Woke students clicked their fingers in support - after progressive colleges warned handclapping can cause offense - and cried 'Yes' in agreement.

Duncan, a 51-year-old Louisiana-born lawyer, known for challenging LGBTQ+ rights, was appointed a federal judge in 2018 by then-President Trump.

Duncan stood and shook his head in amazement while Steinbach also voiced her support for free speech.

He was tasked with discussing laws related to guns, COVID mandates, guns and Twitter.

'So, you've invited me to speak here, and I've been heckled non-stop,' said Duncan.

When Duncan tried to reply to remarks made by Steinbach, students screamed: 'Let her finish!'

They remained hushed and polite while the woke dean espoused her beliefs, but offered Duncan no such courtesy.

Following the incident, the president of the school promised to 'safeguard' free speech after the protest.

Study reveals extent of Western aid to Kiev

Some of Ukraine’s backers have spent more than 2% of their GDP in aid, German research has shown

Ukraine received more than $170 billionin military, financial, and humanitarian assistance between January 2022 and February 2023, according to a fresh study published this month by a German economic research center.

The data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) coversaid provided by Ukraine’s 41 largest donors, which mostly consist of the US and its Western allies.

Washington unsurprisingly emerged as Kiev’s largest single donor, with its total aid accounting for more than 45% of all assistance provided to Ukraine over that period. Roughly 60% of that money was spent on weapons, the data shows.

TheUK’s military assistanceto Kievaccounted for 67%of London’s total aid to Ukraine over that period. Most money Warsaw and Amsterdam allocated for Ukraine was also spent on arms, the research indicated.

The EU’s support, including both the aid provided by Brussels and bilateral assistance provided by the bloc’s members, amounted to almost 40% of the total aid for Ukraine over the same period.

TheUS was also the biggest military aidprovider for Ukraine, spending atotal of $47.16 billionon arms for Kiev’s troops, leaving all other nations far behind. The UK became the second largest contributor by spending $7.1 billion on weapons for the Ukrainian forces.

According to the IfW, both theUS and the UK were not the most transparent assistance providers, when it comes to aiding Kiev. London and Washington took the 17th and 18th places out of 41 respectively in the list of most transparent donors compiled by the German research center. The first two places on this list were occupied by Switzerland and Germany respectively.

Some of Kiev’s Western backers shouldered additional costs due to the need to accommodate refugees coming from Ukraine, the IfW study showed. Poland, which spent 0.6% of its GDP on bilateral aid to Ukraine, had to spend another 2.2% on Ukrainian refugees, according to the data.

Russia blocks Wagner-linked media

The crackdown takes place a week after the failed rebellion of the private military company

Russia has blocked access to several news websites linked to businessman Evgeny Prigozhin, whose private military company Wagner Group was involved in the short-lived mutiny last week.

Public access has been “restricted” to riafan.ru and four other websites operating under the umbrella of the Patriot Media Group, according to the database run by the regulator Roskomnadzor (RKN). The group’s website has also been blacklisted.

The websites mostly focus on covering Russia’s standoff with the West and Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

News agency TASS cited employees of the affected outlets as saying that their parent company would be closed and all of its subsidiaries cease operation.

Prigozhin, who initially made his fortune as a restaurateur and catering tycoon, was listed as the head of the Patriot Media Group’s board of trustees until May.

Earlier, the RKN ordered popular Russian social media platform VK to take down web pages associated with Wagner to “prevent the spread of calls to armed rebellion.”

On June 23, Prigozhin, who accused the Defense Ministry of mishandling the operation in Ukraine, declared a “march for justice” on Moscow. His fighters halted their advance on Saturday evening and returned to their bases after a deal was struck with the authorities. The charges of leading an armed rebellion were dropped as part of the arrangement, and Wagner members were given a choice to sign contracts with the Russian military, return to civilian life, or move to Belarus.

Hungary will not allow the bloc’s money to keep pouring into Ukraine unaccounted for, Viktor Orban has said

According to the latest figures from Brussels, the EU has given Kiev €72 billion ($79 billion) in economic, military, and humanitarian aid since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine began last February. Despite this unprecedented outflow draining its coffers, the European Commission announced earlier this month that it would offer Kiev an additional €50 billion in loans and grants.

"One thing is clear, we Hungarians...will not give more money to Ukraineuntil they say where the previous around 70 billion euros worth of funds has gone," Orban told Hungarian radio, according to a Reuters report.

"And we find itutterly ridiculous and absurd, that we should contribute more money tofinance debt service costs of a loan, from which we have still not received the funds we are entitled to get,” he continued, referring to the commission’s recent announcement thatinterest costs on the bloc’s external debts would doublethis year due to inflation.

The commission is currently denying Hungary and Poland access to post-coronavirus recovery funds over ideological differences with their conservative governments. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen admitted last year that the withholding of funds is one of several “tools”that Brussels can use to force member states to “work with us.”

Hungary blocked an €18 billion financial aid package for Ukraine last year until Brussels freed up a separate batch of funding withheld from Budapest. More recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated on Monday that Hungary would extend for another month its veto on a €500 million arms package from the EU’s common weapons fund for Ukraine.

Orban and Szijjarto have both repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine. Earlier this week, Orban explained that a Ukrainian victory on the battlefield is “impossible” and that without an immediate ceasefire and an end to Western arms deliveries, Ukraine will “lose a huge amount of wealth and many lives, and unimaginable destruction will occur.”

The CEO of parent company Anheuser-Busch has refused to commit to working with Dylan Mulvaney again

Transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney lashed out at Bud Light and parent company Anheuser-Busch in a video posted to social media on Friday,accusing them of abandoning the “Days of Girlhood” TikTokerafter Mulvaney’s promo spot for the beer triggered a very expensive backlash.

Revealing why Mulvaney had waited until three months after the Bud Light promo was posted to come forward, the 26-year-old explained, “I was waiting for the brand to reach out to me, but they never did.”

“For a company to hire a trans person and then not publicly stand by them is worse than not hiring a trans person at all. Because it gives customers permission to be as transphobic and as hateful as they want,” Mulvaney said, warning Anheuser-Busch that LGBTQ people drink beer too.

The performer complained that public reaction was totally out of proportion to an Instagram video shared with Mulvaney’s 1.8 million followers. “You would have thought I was, like, on a billboard or on a TV commercial,” Mulvaney said, observing, “What transpired from that video was more bullying and transphobia than I could ever imagine.”(we don’t feel sorry you, FREAK!)

That harassment continued offline, Mulvaney added, claiming to have been followed, taunted, and threatened in real life as well as on the internet. “To turn a blind eye and act like everything’s OK – it just isn’t an option right now,” the actor stated.

The original video featured Mulvaney in a black cocktail dress, elbow-length gloves, and an Audrey Hepburn hairdofeigning ignorance about sportsand carrying a six-pack of Bud Light. A second spot showed Mulvaney in a bathtub covered in foam, brandishing a can with the influencer’s face on it.

Despite transitioning to female just over a year ago – the custom can was a gift celebrating “365 days of girlhood” – Mulvaney reportedlymade as much as $1 million last year promoting productsnormally associated with women, including sports bras and tampons, despite lacking the relevant anatomy.

US Supreme Court rules in landmark LGBTQ case

The court defended the right of a conservative designer to refuse to create websites for gay weddings

The US Supreme Court has ruled that a conservative web designer is legally entitled to refuse to create websites for same-sex weddings. The court’s liberal justices bitterly condemned what they saw as an attack on a“protected class.”

Web designer Lorie Smith is a devout Christian who runs a business creating bespoke websites for weddings. Her lawyers claim that she is “willing to work with all people, regardless of classifications such as race, creed, sexual orientation, and gender,”but when Smith placed a message on her website in 2016 explaining that she would not create content celebrating homosexual marriage, she found herself in violation of Colorado’s 2015 Anti-Discrimination Act and sued the state.

The case made its way up to theSupreme Court, whichsided with Smith in a 6-3 decisionalong ideological lines on Friday.

Writing the majority opinion, conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch stated that by insisting that Smith create pro-LGBTQ websites, Colorado authoritieswere trying to “compel speech she does not wish to provide,” which the US Constitution’s First Amendment expressly forbids.

"The opinion of the Court is, quite literally, a notice that reads: 'Some services may be denied to same-sex couples,'" Justice Sonya Sotomayor wrote in her dissent, claiming that speech is not protected when its use amounts to an “act of discrimination.”

Gorsuch gavea scathing response to Sotomayor in his opinion. “It is difficult to read the dissent and conclude that we are looking at the same case,” he wrote. “The dissent abandons what this court's cases have recognized time and time again: A commitment to speech for only some persons and some messages is no commitment at all."

In a similar case in 2018, the Supreme Court sided with Christian baker Jack Phillips – also from Colorado – who refused to bake a cake celebrating a gay wedding. While the court found that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission acted with “hostility” toward Phillips’ religious beliefs, it did not issue a ruling on whether cake decoration constitutes “speech,” as Phillips argued, or on the specific circumstances under which people may seek exemption from anti-discrimination laws.

By definitively ruling that web design constitutes “speech,” Friday’s decision could pave the way for similar rulings in the30 US states that have laws requiring businesses to serve everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Young Russian bank VP plunges to her death from Moscow apartment window: report

The young vice president of a Russian bank plunged to her death from her 11th-floor apartment window in Moscow, marking yet another mysterious fatal fall in the country, according to reports.

Kristina Baikova, the 28-year-old VP of Loko-Bank, plummeted from her window June 23 and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Baza Telegram channel.

The bank executive was with a 34-year-old male friend named Andrei at the time of her death, Baza reported.

The man said he was invited by Baikova to her Khodynsky Boulevard apartment for drinks and that she had gone out onto her balcony before she tumbled to the ground below.

Baikova is the latest Russian executive to have died after falling from a building window in what has become a suspicious trend, the Daily Mail reported.

Dan Rapoport, a well-known critic of President Vladimir Putin who was exiled from Russia, was found dead after plunging from his Washington, DC, luxury apartment building last August in what some had suggested was a suicide — claims his wife disputed.

Weeks later, Russian oil giant Lukoil chair Ravil Maganov fell from a sixth-floor window at a hospital in Moscow and died. Before his death, Lukoil had been vocal in its criticism of Putin and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to Euro Weekly News.

Then in December, the creative director of an IT company, Grigory Kochenov, plunged from his apartment balcony and fell to his death while Russian authorities searched his apartment.

The same month, a Russian sausage tycoon fell to his death from a hotel window in India just two days after his friend, also from Russia, died at the same hotel. A Russian real estate tycoon also took a fatal tumble down a flight of stairs while in the French Riviera in December.

And earlier this month, a federal judge, Artyom Bartenev, fell 12 stories from his apartment building and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homeland Security said Friday it will build 20 more miles of border wall, carrying out some of former President Donald Trump’s marquee campaign promise.

The department suggested it had no choice but to begin constructionthanks to the terms of the 2019 spending bill, which allocated money specifically for wall-building at the border.

Some $190 million remains unspent and President Biden risked running afoul of the law if he didn’t take steps to spend it on the wall by September.

Of more than 150 bills signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker Friday, one allows undocumented immigrants in Illinois to get a standard driver’s license like citizens can get.

The measure that begins Jan. 1 was an initiative of Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

Ukraine reportedly plans to use the Russian peninsula as leverage in negotiations with Moscow

Ukrainian officials aim to station long-range weapons* near Crimea in order to gain an upper hand in future peace negotiations with Russia, theWashington Postreported on Friday, citing three people familiar with the matter.

According to the Post, the Ukrainian leadership shared the plans withCIA head William Burns during his secret trip to Kievlast month, where he met with President Vladimir Zelensky.

Zelensky and his aides are reportedly devising plans to end the fighting “on terms that are acceptable to Russia and the Ukrainian people.” To achieve that, they hope to gain leverage over Moscow by retaking “substantial territory by the fall,” and, “in an ideal scenario,”station artillery and rocket systems on the border with Crimea, where the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is located. (Once again they announce their plan or spoof in advance. What kind of war is this?)

By “holding hostage” the peninsula, Kiev wants to “open negotiations” and demand that “Russia accept whatever security guarantees Ukraine can secure from the West,” the Post said.

Ukraine’s top commander, General Valery Zaluzhny, has voiced frustration over criticism of the much-hyped counteroffensive, which was launched last month, but has so far failed to push back the Russians in any significant way. According to Moscow, multiple Ukrainian assaults were repelled, while Kiev’s forces had suffered heavy losses. The troops lost Western-supplied heavy tanks and combat vehicles to minefields and artillery fire as they tried to break through fortified Russian positions.

Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine broke down in the spring of 2022. Kiev has since demanded that Russia surrender its four newly acquired regions, as well as Crimea, which Moscow stressed was non-negotiable. Russia also named Ukraine’s neutrality as one of requirements for the conflict to end.

Crimea voted to join Russia in the wake of the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev. The regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye did the same after holding referendums in September 2022. Ukraine considers these territories illegally occupied by Russia.

Berlin doesn’t wish to meddle in Russia’s domestic affairs, the chancellor has said

Germany has no intention to intervene in Russia’s internal affairs, Chancellor Olaf Scholz told journalists in Brussels on Thursday, a week following the failed armed rebellion launched by the Wagner private military company.

Berlin can only observe the events in Russia from a distance, Scholz said on the sidelines of an EU summit. He added thatGermany had nothing to do with the short-lived mutinythat took place in Russia last weekend. (Scholz is stupid he admits Germany was involved, Germany is skeered!)

“We are not a party to what is happening in Russia,” the chancellor said, addingthat “our goal is not … a regime change in Russia.”Instead, Berlin seeks to continue to help Ukraine in its fight against Moscow, he said.

On June 23, Wagner chief Evgeny Prigozhin accused the Russian Defense Ministry of launching a deadly missile strike on one of the group’s camps, vowing retaliation. The ministry denied the allegation.

Wagner troops then occupied part of the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and some of the group’s elements sought to march on Moscow. Prigozhin halted the march the next day in exchange for security guarantees as part of a deal brokered by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Scholz reaffirmed that NATO would defend its members in Eastern Europe in case of a potential escalation with Belarus. Polish President Andrzej Duda recently said it would be a “negative signal” for his country if Prigozhin and some remnants of the Wagner Group relocate to Belarus as part of the arrangement to end the mutiny.

NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. government has urged an appeals court to uphold Ghislaine Maxwell's conviction and 20-year prison sentence for helping the disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls.

In a Thursday night filing with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, federal prosecutors said none of Maxwell's legal arguments about the fairness of her trial undermined their case, or justified a dismissal or new trial.

"The government's evidence at trial established that over the course of a decade, Maxwell facilitated and participated in the sexual abuse of multiple young girls," prosecutors said.

Arthur Aidala, a lawyer for Maxwell, had no immediate comment.

Maxwell, 61, is behind bars in Tallahassee, Florida, after a Manhattan jury convicted her in December 2021 on five charges for recruiting and grooming four girls for Epstein to abuse between 1994 and 2004.

Her accusers have said she and Epstein at first made them feel welcome in their orbit, before Epstein began demanding sexualized massages. Hundreds of women have said he abused them.

In her appeal, Maxwell, daughter of late British media mogul Robert Maxwell, accused prosecutors of making her a scapegoat because Epstein was dead and "public outrage" demanded that someone else absorb the blame.

Prosecutors rejected her claims that they waited too long to bring charges, and that Epstein's 2007 non-prosecution agreement arising from alleged abuse at his Palm Beach, Florida mansion also immunized her.

They also said the trial judge had discretion to conclude that Maxwell's jury was fair and impartial, though one juror failed to disclose during pre-trial questioning that he had been sexually abused as a child.

"This case does not present the extraordinary circumstances that justify overturning a jury's verdict based on an error during voir dire," prosecutors said.

Epstein committed suicide at age 66 in August 2019 in a Manhattan jail cell, while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.

Others who were friendly with him have seen their reputations tarred or ruined, among them Britain's Prince Andrew and former JPMorgan Chase executive and Barclays chief executive Jes Staley.

JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank, which both had Epstein as a client, are paying a combined $365 million to Epstein's accusers over their work for him. The U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein had a home, is also suing JPMorgan.

Maxwell is eligible for release in July 2037, with credit for good behavior and the two years she spent in jail before being imprisoned.

Violent unrest triggered by the police shooting of a 17-year-old during a traffic stop has roiled France for three nights

Nationwide riots triggered by French police’s fatal shooting of a 17-year-oldspread to Belgiumon Thursday, unleashing chaos that resulted in 64 arrests, City of Brussels police revealed on Friday.

The arrested included 47 minors and 16 adults who have been administratively detained, police said in a statement on Friday. Another minor, who was reportedly seen beating up a police officer, was arrested and questioned but released on Friday.

Hordes of young people gathered in Brussels on Thursday night,using social media meetupsto evade the authorities’ grasp and reassembling at the next location when police got too close. As the rioters settled on the Anneessens neighborhood and nearby Midi Station as the targets of their rage, the Anneessens metro station was closed for the night and buses through the neighborhood stopped or rerouted.

Video posted to social media shows rioters setting cars and even buildings on fire and strewing trash through the streets as rudimentary barricades. Local police told the Brussels Times that ten people were arrested for throwing paving stones at cops.

Tuesday’s point-blank shooting of Franco-Algerian teenager Nahel M. during a suburban traffic stop in Nanterre has ignited three nights of riots across France.Some 667 people were arrestedin France on Thursday night as police forces quadrupled their numbers in the streets, deploying 40,000 officers including anti-terrorist and tactical units.

The unrest reportedly began as peaceful protests before turning violent at the hands of teens armed with fireworks, Molotov cocktails, and other improvised weapons. While the police officer who shot the 17-year-old has been charged with homicide, this announcement did not make a dent in the violence.

Many parts of France have already been in the grip of protest for months as residents denounced Macron’s pension reforms. France’s majorunions have vowed not to back down until Macron capitulates.

A longtime Texas pastor pleaded guilty Tuesday to downloading — sometimes at his church — more than 100,000 files of ”BDSM” and bestiality-themed child pornography.

David Lloyd Walther, 57, admitted that he “knowingly searched for, downloaded, distributed and possessed child sexual abuse material, including child pornography,” the Western District of Texas’ US Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

Walther was serving his 18th year as the pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Round Rock, a city 20 miles north of Austin, when he was nabbed in October for stockpiling thousands of perverted material using BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.

Walther — who immediately admitted to the crime upon his arrest — downloaded the evil content from the church as well as his own home in Georgetown.

Investigators uncovered two large computer hard drives that contained “more than 100,000 images and more than 5,000 videos of child sexual abuse material” during a search of the clergyman’s home, prosecutors said.

The disturbing files were stored in crudely labeled folders on the computers, according to an arrest affidavit.

Walther had one titled “BDSM” that contained images of prepubescent children tied up with ropes and mouth restraints, forcing them into sexually suggestive poses and acts.

Another, called “Zoo,” contained a bestiality video involving a dog and a female toddler “likely less than three years old.”

He also downloaded several videos through BitTorrent showing young girls being sexually abused by adult men, as well as the children being forced to abuse one another.

Upon his arrest, Walther waived his Miranda rights and admitted he had a “pornography addiction and would often go through cycles of downloading and viewing pornography depicting both adults and minors” and that “when he viewed the child pornography, the children depicted were between 8 and 17 years old, either posing sexually or engaged in sex acts with adults or other children,” the documents state.

The pastor also admitted he had a habit of “purging” the illicit files when he felt guilty, knowing that what he had done was wrong.

He apologized and confessed several times to downloading the depraved material, but claimed he didn’t know he had been distributing the videos through BitTorrent.

Walther’s former church has since cut ties with the pervert and eradicated any sign of him from its social media channels.

Deacon David Clawson told the Fort Worth-Star Telegram last year that church leaders “regret anything” that happened under Walther’s guidance.

“The church will continue to move forward as God has led,” Clawson said.

Walther now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000

ESPN has sent Jalen Rose to the unemployment line, along with NBA game analyst Jeff Van Gundy as the cable sports network begins another round to trim millions from its operating budget. Rose, 50, was the first high-profile layoff of this latest round of layoffs on Friday, according to the New York Post. Anew law giving illegal migrants the authority to drive in Rhode Island officially goes into effect Saturday.

The change comes a year after legislation in both chambers of the General Assembly was passed.

Late last June, Gov. Dan McKee swiftly signed House Bill 7939 and companion legislation Senate Bill 2006, into law, starting the countdown clock to the law’s enactment to the midpoint of this calendar year.

The new law means undocumented motorists will have the opportunity to obtain what state officials are referring to as “driving privilege cards” from the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles in lieu of the standard driver’s licenses that are issued.

When he signed the bill into law last year at a ceremony, McKee said the changes within it are “an important issue for our economy, equality, and public safety.”

“By granting every Rhode Islander of driving age the opportunity to safely and legally drive a vehicle, we are allowing them to further their education and career – which, in turn, benefits the entire state,” McKee said in a release.

In the statement, McKee cited years-long efforts from lawmakers and advocates across the state.

Open Society Foundations, the nonprofit founded by billionaire George Soros, plans to cut at least 40% of its staff in the coming months.

The charity, which earlier this month confirmed Soros, 92, was handing control to his son Alex, said Friday its board approved “significant changes” to its operating model. That includes “a substantial reduction in headcount of no less than 40% globally,” according to a spokesperson.

Soros has donated more than $32 billion to the nonprofit, which had more than 500 employees as of the end of 2021 and gives money to humanitarian and democratic causes ranging from criminal justice reform to climate change initiatives. It currently controls the majority of assets managed by his $25 billion family office.

Here's the downright crazy part where they try to legally justify this stuff under emergency executive powers to overcome any "resistance" to the mandate.

Update: one of the memo's authors is a NIH investigator (retired) who appeared to know several top officials on a first name basis. The same individual has co-authored scientific papers with FDA commissioner Hahn.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis met Friday with imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s wife Stella, who said the pope’s gesture in receiving her was evidence of his “ongoing show of support for our family’s plight” and concern over her husband’s suffering.

In an interview with The Associated Press after the audience, Stella Assange recalled that Francis had sent a letter to her husband in March 2021, during a particularly difficult period.

“He has provided great solace and comfort and we are extremely appreciative for his reaching out to our family in this way,” she told AP. “He understands that Julian is suffering and is concerned.”

Assange has spent four years in Britain’s Belmarsh Prison fighting extradition to the U.S., where he faces up to a 175-year sentence on espionage charges for publishing classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks.

Before that, Assange had taken asylum for seven years in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault allegations.

Sweden dropped the sex crimes investigations in November 2019 because so much time had elapsed, but British judges have kept Assange in prison pending the outcome of the long-running extradition case.

The Vatican didn’t release any details of the private audience, other than to confirm that it happened. The Argentine Jesuit pope has long expressed solidarity with prisoners, frequently visiting detainees on his foreign visits and prioritizing prison ministry when he was archbishop in Buenos Aires.

She called the audience “overwhelming” and noted that she brought along her mother, brother and the couple’s two young sons, Gabriel and Max, who were conceived during Julian Assange’s time in the embassy.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A San Antonio contractor has been charged in connection with his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

According to a federal complaint filed in the District of Columbia, Brandon Lee Bradshaw faces the following charges:

Entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds

Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds

Disorderly conduct in a capitol building

Parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building

The complaint contains various photographs from security cameras located inside and outside of the Capitol that show Bradshaw participating in the January 6, 2021 riot.

The photos show Bradshaw wearing a “God Guns Trump” cap and a T-shirt that said, “Patriotism Is Not A Crime.”

One of the photos shows Bradshaw standing near a line of police with a red bullhorn in his hand on the west side of the Capitol building.

Other photos show Bradshaw grabbing a police officer’s baton, entering the Capitol through a broken window near the Senate Wing door, inside the Senate Wing with other rioters and law enforcement forcing him out of the building. The complaint said Bradshaw was among the last rioters to leave the Senate Wing before it was secured. He is also seen interacting with law enforcement officers outside the building.

On July 28, 2021, Bradshaw was interviewed by the FBI at its field office in San Antonio. During the interview, Bradshaw confirmed that he was in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, to attend former President Donald Trump’s rally. When Bradshaw was asked if he was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, he said, “I wish to plead the 5th on that question.”

Bradshaw is scheduled to appear before a federal judge in San Antonio on Friday morning. His bond has been set at $15,000.

KSAT interviewed Bradshaw as part of an unrelated story on boarding home violations last fall.

Bradshaw’s arrest was first reported by the San Antonio Express-News.

A former business partner of Hunter and James Biden, who worked directly with them on a 2017 China energy deal, was never asked to testify to a Delaware grand jury investigating Hunter Biden, two sources familiar with the discussions tell CBS News.

Tony Bobulinski, the former business partner, was open to testifying, and his attorney reached out to the office of Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss. Weiss did not return their calls, the sources said. Weiss' decision not to bring Bobulinski is the latest indication that prosecutors investigating Hunter Biden may have avoided investigating allegations about his father, President Joe Biden.

In October 2020, Bobulinski was invited by the Trump campaign to attend a presidential debate after he released business records about his dealings with Hunter and James Biden. At a press conference before the debate, he claimed to have met with Joe Biden in May 2017, as part of discussions over a potential business deal with a Chinese energy firm, CEFC.

"I've heard Joe Biden say that he's never discussed business with Hunter. That is false. I have firsthand knowledge about this because I directly dealt with the Biden family, including Joe Biden," Bobulinski said at the press conference. Contacted this week by CBS News, Bobulinski said he stands behind those statements.

Bobulinski's claims have garnered new interest among GOP congressional investigators after IRS whistleblowers gave closed-door testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee. In those transcripts, released last week, the whistleblower alleges the president's son received preferential treatment that allegedly stymied federal investigators. The whistleblower, Gary Shapley, testified that investigative leads that might have led to Joe Biden were not pursued in the late summer and fall of 2020. At the time, Donald Trump was president and the attorney general was Bill Barr.

Shapley alleges that in August 2020, an iCloud search warrant recovered a July 2017 WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to Chinese businessman Henry Zhao about an outstanding payment.

Shapley testified that prosecutors "denied" investigators' efforts to learn more about the message.

"I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight," Hunter Biden allegedly wrote. "And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father."

Asked about Shapley's testimony, Ian Sams, a White House spokesperson said, "As we have said many times before, the President was not in business with his son."

"As we have also said many times before, the Justice Department makes decisions in its criminal investigations independently, and in this case, the White House has not been involved," Sams said. "As the President has said, he loves his son and is proud of him accepting responsibility for his actions and is proud of what he is doing to rebuild his life."

Hunter Biden's legal team did not reply to a request for comment.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. State Department has approved potential defense sales to Taiwan worth an estimated $440.2 million, according to two separate statements Thursday.

The approval comes amid tension between the U.S. and China over human rights, military activities and economic practices. The principal contractors are Alliant Techsystems Operations LLC in Minnesota and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems in Illinois.

“The proposed sale will contribute to the sustainment of the recipient’s CM34 Armored Vehicles, enhancing its ability to meet current and future threats,” the release read.

The other potential sale, worth $108 million, is for “a Cooperative Logistics Supply Support Arrangement (CLSSA) Foreign Military Sales Order II (FMSO II) to support the purchase of spare and repair parts for wheeled vehicles, weapons, and other related elements of program support,” the agency noted.

The sales serve “U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient’s continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability,” a State Department spokesperson said. They also help “improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.”

The U.S. has pumped billions of dollars in security assistance into Taiwan in recent years in the hopes of deterring a military assault from China.

Three Galaxies in Draco

This tantalizing trio of galaxies sometimes called the Draco Group, is located in the northern constellation of (you guessed it) Draco, the Dragon. From left to right are face-on spiral NGC 5985, elliptical galaxy NGC 5982, and edge-on spiral NGC 5981, all found within this single telescopic field of view that spans a little more than the width of the full moon. While the group is far too small to be a galaxy cluster, and has not been catalogued as a compact galaxy group, the three galaxies all do lie roughly 100 million light-years from planet Earth. Not as well known as other tight groupings of galaxies, the contrast in visual appearance still makes this triplet an attractive subject for astroimagers. On close examination with spectrographs, the bright core of striking spiral NGC 5985 shows prominent emission in specific wavelengths of light, prompting astronomers to classify it as a Seyfert, a type of active galaxy. This impressively deep exposure hints at a faint dim halo along with sharp-edged shells surrounding elliptical NGC 5982, evidence of past galactic mergers. It also reveals many even more distant background galaxies.

“WHO is afraid of the water?”

The question, from a former special agent with the US Department of Homeland Security, is directed at a group of children being held against their will in a rusted home hidden in the hills of Petion-Ville, in the republic of Haiti.

The undercover human trafficking operative produces an iPhone, and shows the children an image of a luxury yacht, moored nearby in the Caribbean.

There’s a moment of awkward laughter, before, gradually, a few tiny arms shoot up in the air.

“Wi, wi,” they say in Creole, explaining that they’re scared.

With us are a dozen children, who’ve been released by their captors from locked rooms at the back of the property. They are aged between eight and 14 years old.

They are sex slaves.

Child trafficking victims who’ve spent their formative years servicing the carnal desires of men, often foreigners, who are three, four, five or six times their age.

Their madam tells me that many of their customers are western humanitarian workers who’ve come here to help rebuild Haiti after the recent run of natural disasters.

“Every day, every day, every day,’’ she says, after being asked if the kids have experience with westerners.

One of the little girls tightens her ponytail and checks her lipstick in the reflection of the madam’s sunglasses. Her T-shirt logo reads, ‘Viv lavi a mande’, or, ‘Live life to the fullest’. She sneaks a look over her shoulder at a member of the Haitian cartel who is doing a terrible job of concealing a machete.

The children are told that we are a planning an underage sex party for a group of wealthy Americans and Australians.

The undercover agents I am with explain to the traffickers that the party will take place on their yacht, which has been sailed over from Miami and is now anchored off a beach resort on a spectacular stretch of Haiti’s northeast coast.
