Jordan and Egypt condemned Israel on Monday for launching a major military operation in the West Bank city of Jenin and its adjoining refugee camp, warning that aggressive actions could escalate the already volatile situation.

TIRANA, July 3 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Monday met 12 children and men from Kosovo who were named after him in gratitude for his role in stopping the 1998-99 Kosovo War.

Clinton, who served as president from 1993 to 2001, is regarded as a hero in Kosovo and Albania for launching NATO air strikes against Serbia's forces in 1999. The strikes halted the war and allowed nearly 1 million Albanian refugees in Kosovo to return to their homes.

'Sound of Freedom' scores 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating ahead of July 4 premiere

Sound of Freedom has received a 92 percent rating from critics.

The Sound of Freedom, which opens in theaters Tuesday, has received a 92 percent "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 100 percent rating from audiences who have seen the film ahead of opening day.

In a review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman said that "you needn’t hold extreme beliefs to experience 'Sound of Freedom' as a compelling movie that shines an authentic light on one of the crucial criminal horrors of our time, one that Hollywood has mostly shied away from."

Gleiberman wrote that modern media shows drug trafficking in excess, but "Child sex trafficking, by contrast, isn’t a subject that lends itself to 'entertainment.’"

"But as 'Sound of Freedom' informs us, it’s the fastest growing international criminal network the world has ever seen. A closing title states — accurately — that there are more people enslaved now, by sex trafficking, than there were when slavery was legal. And the nightmare lived by captured children is unspeakable, unimaginable…and all too real. Let’s be clear: This matters more than the cocaine or opioids industry," Gleiberman wrote.

The Pauline Center for Media Studies, a project of the Daughters of St. Paul, wrote that "Sound of Freedom plays like an action thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat at the same time as being a drama about Tim's first foray into rescuing trafficked kids. Caviezel's acting is spot on as he expresses Tim's horror at the reality these victims have endured and his determination to liberate them.

"Lucas Avila as Miguel is magnificent at conveying the intense emotion of a trafficking victim coupled with the innocence of a child who just wants his sister back. A troubling aspect of the film, though, is that it makes integration back into 'normal' life after being exploited look too easy."

The high ratings come as the film has surpassed $10 million in presales, with over one million tickets sold.

The film is based on the actions of Tim Ballard, who left his position at the Department of Homeland Security and started Operation Underground Railroad in 2013 to rescue children who had been trafficked around the globe, and stars Jim Caviezel as the lead.

George Soros doubts artificial intelligence can be stopped. But he believes the technology poses a grave danger to democracies and gives authoritarians powerful new surveillance capabilities.

A.I. is “particularly good at producing instruments of control that help closed societies to surveil their subjects,” the billionaire financier wrote in a recent Project Syndicate essay.

The 92-year-old wrote that the world faces a “polycrisis” with many sources, but the main ones, in order of importance, are A.I., climate changes, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The hedge-fund pioneer noted that Geoffrey Hinton, widely considered the “godfather of A.I.," resigned from Google so that he could speak freely about the risks posed by the technology. Hinton’s warning that A.I. will “surpass human intelligence” in five to 20 years and “realize that it achieves its goals better if it becomes more powerful” made a “big impression on me,” Soros wrote.

A.I. a 'mortal threat'

While Soros agrees with experts that A.I. should be regulated, he also thinks regulations “have to be globally enforceable” given the temptation to gain an advantage by evading them. But he added that “unfortunately, global regulations are unattainable” given the conflict between open and closed societies. (In the former, he says, the role of the state is to defend the freedom of the individual, while in the latter the role of the individual is to serve the interests of the rulers.)

“Nobody can predict where [artificial intelligence] will take us,” he wrote. “But we can be sure of one thing: A.I. helps closed societies and poses a mortal threat to open societies.” For that reason, he added, he’s “instinctively opposed to A.I.,” even as he doesn’t “know how it can be stopped.”

In other parts of the same unclassified file, Johnson turned down a request from the Department of Justice suggesting Johnson to allow an independent panel of lawyers and jurists to investigate Kennedy’s assassination.

It was reported Johnson even had “contempt” of the plan for independent investigators to get to the bottom of Kennedy’s assassination.

Louisiana Gov. Vetoes Bill Meant To Shield Children From Transgender Procedures

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, has vetoed a bill that was meant to protect children from transgender gender-change surgeries and other procedures like giving kids cross-sex hormones.

House Bill 648, known as the “Stop Harming Our Kids Act,” was passed by the Republican-controlled state legislature along party lines in early June.

The bill sought to prohibit hormone treatments for minors as well as puberty-blocking drugs and gender reassignment surgery, such as giving girls who identify as boys double mastectomies, which critics have decried as a form of mutilation.

“If HB 648 doesn’t become law, we will be sending a horrible message to our children,” Louisiana state Sen. Jeremy Stine, a Republican, wrote on Twitter after the bill’s passage and as questions swirled around whether it would receive a veto.

“This isn’t complicated. Our kids deserve to know that they are loved, valued, and perfect just as God created them,” the Republican lawmaker added.

Stine’s fear that the bill would get nixed before it entered into force became a reality on June 29, when the Louisiana governor said in a letter (pdf) that he had vetoed it.

Some had held out hopes that Edwards wouldn’t veto HB 648 because in the prior legislative session, he decided not to block a law banning transgender-identifying athletes from taking part in women and girls’ sports competitions.

However, Edwards’ six-page veto letter made clear his opposition to the “Stop Harming Our Kids Act,” which he called “ironic” because he claimed “that is precisely what it does.”

‘Ripe For a Veto’

Edwards’ letter was addressed to Clay Schexnayder, the Republican Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives.

In it, Edwards said the bill threatens specialists’ professional licenses, removes parental rights in healthcare decisions for children with gender dysphoria, and generally amounts to a “targeted assault” on kids suffering psychologically from a “gender crisis.”

King Charles takes part in ancient ‘Ceremony of the Keys’ ritual at Palace of Holyroodhouse for the first time as monarch ahead of his Coronation 2.0

The King today took part in the historic Ceremony of the Keys - the traditional opener to Holyrood Week for the Royal Family.

His Majesty, 74, is in Edinburgh for the traditional week of events in Scotland, which will include many firsts for the monarch, including a special ceremony of thanksgiving at St Giles' Cathedral on Wednesday, where Charles will be presented with the Honours of Scotland - the nation's crown jewels.

Today's ceremony saw the King handed the keys of the city and welcomed to his 'ancient and hereditary kingdom of Scotland'. A Guard of Honour was formed by members of Royal Company of Archers.

During the ritual, the monarch ceremoniously returns the keys, entrusting them to the elected officials of the city.

Earlier today, Charles visited Kinneil House in Bo'ness, Falkirk, to meet representatives from charities including his own, The Princes Trust, as well as Cycling Without Age Scotland and Sustainable Thinking Scotland.

AI Companies Negotiate Landmark Deals To Train Chatbots On MSM News

When the creators of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Google's Bard want to 'teach' them about the world in order to accurately answer questions, they use various news and social media sources to 'scrape' content which then 'trains' said models. This is why Twitter owner Elon Musk just began throttling accounts which consume a massive amount of content on a daily basis - as it became a free and valuable resource for engineers.

It's also why AI can be 'woke' - as it all depends on the data it's being trained on, which as we've seen, can bias the chatbot towards the political ideology of its creators (for which loopholes were quickly discovered).

Now, the Financial Times reports that the world's largest tech companies are negotiation with major media outlets to strike landmark deals for the use of news content to train AI chatbots.

These people said that publishers including News Corp, Axel Springer, The New York Times and The Guardian have each been in discussions with at least one of the tech companies.

Those involved in the discussions, which remain in the early stages, added that the deals could involve media organisations being paid a subscription-style fee for their content in order to develop the technology underpinning chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

The talks come as media groups express concern over the threat to the industry posed by the rise of AI, as well as fears over the use of their content by OpenAI and Google without deals in place. Some companies such as Stability AI and OpenAI are facing legal action from artists, photo agencies and coders, who allege contractual and copyright infringement. -FT

According to News Corp CEO Robert Thomson, the media industry's "collective IP is under threat," for which news outlets should "argue vociferously for compensation."

In short - use their content to train your AI without paying, get sued.

Current discussions have revolved around a pricing model in the $5 million to $20 million per year level, according to one industry exec.

According to Thomson, AI was "designed so the reader will never visit a journalism website, thus fatally undermining that journalism."

The negotiations, if successful, would establish a blueprint for news organizations dealing with generative AI companies worldwide.

In just one year’s time we have witnessed the overturning of Roe v. Wade and the finding that affirmative action in college admissions is unconstitutional. In addition, we have seen the Supreme Court offer a strong rebuke to excessive executive power in the tyrannical style of Barack Obama and Joe Biden with a return to the constitutionality of separation of powers. Of all the gloom and turpitude that we face, the threats against our liberty that we live under, the good news coming from the Supreme Court should hearten us all.

I don’t suspect that the likes of Jonah Goldberg, Steve Hayes, Bill Kristol, Kevin Williamson and so many other Never Trumpers are hoisting a glass to toast Donald Trump’s role in these two lifetime landmark cases, issues that have been conservative cornerstones for a half of century. If they can’t show gratitude, perhaps they will be pleased with this turn of events. But pride befalls us all, of all the deadly sins.

But love him, hate him, or be indifferent to the 45th president, his court has changed history. He is responsible for the emergence of the most conservative court in our lifetimes. And be forewarned, the Left and the Democrats are on fire in a rage that will burn long into the night, into the months and years ahead. Retribution will come, which puts the pressure on the elections next November in an entirely new light. To the Left everything is on the table, court packing, adding Senators, imposing “emergency” measures on upcoming elections, be not naïve of the measures that Democrats will take to reestablish control over the Judiciary.

Not to be a downer on the parade, however, of the recent court decisions, there is one miss, and it isn’t immaterial or irrelevant. This being the Court’s decision on Moore v. Harper. Article I, Section 4, Clause 1 in the U.S. Constitution clearly states:

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof.

The Constitution is very clear on this matter, or maybe it is just written in English too plain to understand. It doesn’t say the State Governor, the State Courts, or any other State actor. And yet the Supreme Court, with John Roberts and Bret Kavanaugh siding with the leftists, determined that it must mean something else. That the State Legislatures are not the arbiter and decider on federal elections in their States and that State Courts can intervene. This is not just unconstitutional but a recipe for disaster.

Why is this important? Of all the attacks on our freedom, the withering and destruction of our liberties, the one bulwark against this onslaught is not the next president, the next election, or some federal policy of lowering taxes or decreasing regulations. Important yes, but what can save us, sadly no.

That bulwark is the concept of Federalism, the preservation of the 10th Amendment and the entire edifice of State Sovereignty. So long as we preserve that, we have a fighting chance of saving our Republic. Minus that, we are done, and it won’t matter who gets elected president, takes the Senate or any other magical machination in the halls of D.C. And yet the court in Moore v Harper, as with so many other cases, fell back on a (mis) reading of the 14th Amendment and the “Reductions Clause” to ignore the clear intent of the Constitution.

Just how the Department of Justice came to give Hunter Biden a sweetheart plea deal, ignoring protocol and forgoing jail time, has become a question of keen interest for congressional members.

Now, a new report is adding more intrigue to the saga. According to The Daily Mail, one of the prosecutors who was intimately involved in formulating the controversial deal once worked directly for one of Hunter Biden’s business partners.

A prosecutor who signed off on the documents charging Hunter Biden with tax and gun crimes previously worked with one of the First Son’s business partners, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Delaware US Attorney David Weiss officially filed charges against the president’s son last Tuesday after a near five-year probe into his alleged tax crimes and foreign financial dealings.

Weiss’s deputy, Assistant United States Attorney Derek Hines, signed off on the charging documents alongside his boss and two other assistant US attorneys – indicating he has a central role in Hunter’s criminal prosecution.

According to Hines’s LinkedIn account, he previously worked as Special Counsel to ex-FBI director Louis Freeh at his private company, Freeh Group International Solutions, a lobbying and ‘risk management’ consultancy that teamed up with Hunter on overseas business currently under scrutiny by lawmakers.

United States Attorney for the District of Delaware David Weiss’ top lieutenant is Derek Hines, who serves as the Assistant United States Attorney in the same office. According to the report, Hines signed off on the charging Documents that ended up being such a boon for the president’s son.

That’s where the conflict of interest comes in. Hines once worked directly for Louis Freeh. Who is Freeh? He’s a former FBI director that was in business with Hunter Biden to the tune of a $3 million deal. Hines wasn’t just some random FBI employee either. He served as special counsel to Freeh, meaning that would have had a very close professional relationship.

Disturbing photos have revealed Philadelphia's drugs crisis, with homeless people shooting up on the streets of the birthplace of American independence over the Fourth of July weekend. The Kensington neighborhood, 'ground zero' for the city's drug epidemic, is seen strewn with trash and addicts injecting drugs in the middle of the day. The disaster has been fueled by the rise of the drug Xylazine, known as 'tranq' - a lethal sedative that is used to enhance the effects of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine.

World’s coldest village sets new summer temperature record

It was 32 degrees Celsius (89.6F) on Monday in Oymyakon in Russia’s Far East, local media reported

A new high temperature record has been set in the village of Oymyakon in Russia’s Far East, known internationally as theworld’s coldestpermanently inhabited settlement.Wildfireshave occurred in the region as a result of a recent heatwave.

Temperatures in the village, which is located in the remote Yakutia region or Sakha Republic, reached 32 degrees Celsius (89.6F) on Monday, according to local media, surpassing the previous record of 30.5 degrees Celsius set on the same day in 1949.

The head of the Sakha Republic, Aisen Nikolaev, declared a state of emergency in the region on Monday asmassive wildfires spreadover the weekend. On his Telegram channel, Nikolaev noted that the Oymyakon district was among the worst affected.

Oymyakon is among the coldest places in the Northern Hemisphere, having recorded a low temperature of -67.7 degrees Celsius (-89.9F) in 1933. However, an unverified record was set seven years earlier, when a low of -71.2 degrees Celsius was reported.

Despite the extreme weather conditions, Oymyakon has apermanent population of around 500 people.

Climate change poses a particularly acute threat to Yakutia, as much of its infrastructure is built on permafrost. Experts warn that thawing could lead to major social and economic ramifications in the region.

Cocaine was found on premises at the White House Sunday evening and the Secret Service is investigating the incident that caused an evacuation of the premises. A dispatch call reviewed by DailyMail.com reveals the substance was found in the White House library – and a preliminary test found that the white powder tested positive for cocaine. The discovery came two days after Joe Biden's son Hunter, 52, visited the White House on Friday, which has perked the ears of conservatives who are speculating that the president's addict son is the source of the illegal substance.

Did Incompetence Allow Pearl Harbor?

Did you know that in 1941 the commander at Pearl Harbor reversed the alert codes but didn’t tell Washington?

The controversy about “did Roosevelt know” about Pearl Harbor took it on the chin a few years ago in a book by a major who, in World War II, was instructed to get to the bottom of what happened in the surprise attack.

Henry Clausen was given a special assignment in 1945 by Chief of Staff George Marshall: re-interview all those who gave testimony to the five Congressional committees, except this time, tell them you are aware of the MAGIC code breaking operation and are “read into” the program.

Clausen responded that they wouldn’t believe him.

Marshall said they would because he was going to supply Clausen with several actual MAGIC documents—as secret as the atomic bomb itself—that he was to carry in a pouch on his person at all times.

Since the war was still going on, if Clausen was shot down anywhere over enemy held territory, rather than allow the documents to fall into enemy hands, he was to ignite the package on his chest with a trigger, thus committing suicide.

Clausen must have gulped at that one, but he carried out his assignment.

Suddenly, those who had told one story to several congressional committees—absolving Admiral Husband Kimmel and General Walter Short—could now reference secret information they could not previously even reveal to Congress. Their newtestimony told a different story of non-cooperation between the Army and the Navywho had the duty of protecting Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Most of all, it told a shocking story of incompetence by General Walter Short and his staff.

The problem came when the War Department sent the commanders at Pearl Harbor a “war” message on November 27 stating in the most stark terms that “hostile action [is] possible at any moment.”

General short had a “Standard Operating Procedure” for such cases from July that had the alerts numbered one through three, with one the highest level of alert and three the lowest.

OnNovember 5, 1941, Short reversed the alert ordermaking the highest alert level the lowest and vice versa. “One” now was the equivalent of “three.”

But it was far worse, because Short had never informed the War Department of the change, when he was asked if he was on “Alert 1" Short replied he was—only by that time “Alert 1" was the lowest level of alert, not highest.

The new “Alert 1" was an alert “with no threat from without” (i.e., from the ocean)!

Concluding his review, Clausen wrote that “Short played down his changing of the SOP in his testimony before the Army Pearl Harbor Board . . . . [and] misled the interrogator who asked him the question about the alerts.”

"Played down" indeed.

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating after a white powder was reportedly found at the White House on Sunday.

The substance was discovered by members of the Uniformed Division of the Secret Service conducting routine rounds through the building, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, told The Washington Post.

A preliminary field test indicated that the substance was cocaine, according to a dispatch from a fire crew that responded.

In audio footage, logged on a site called openmhz.com, a firefighter with the D.C. department's hazardous materials team can be heard calling in the results of a test

"We have a yellow bar saying cocaine hydrochloride," the firefighter said.

The Post reported that the dispatch, timestamped at 8:49 p.m., was from the White House on Sunday night, citing an official familiar with the Secret Service's investigation.

Guglielmi said that the substance is undergoing further testing to determine what it is, and there is "an investigation into the cause and manner" of how the substance entered the White House.

Macron proposes fines for rioting youths

France has been gripped by widespread violence following the fatal shooting of a teenager by police

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed issuing fines to youths involved in the ongoing unrest in the country, but has said that the “peak” of the rioting across France has passed.

Around 4,000 people have been arrested across the country since Friday in widespread demonstrations following the death of a 17-year-old boy of North African descent at the hands of French police last week. The country’s justice ministry has estimated that about 1,200 of those arrested are minors.

“We need to find a way of sanctioning the families financially and easily,” Macron said during a Monday meeting with police officers in Paris, according to Le Parisien. “A sort of minimum price for the first screw up.”

Speaking last week, Macron outlined his position that it is the “responsibility of the parents to keep them at home,” amid reports that children as young as 12 had been detained in protests after the killing of teenager Nahel Merzouk by police in the Paris suburbs. The French leader added that “it is not the state’s job to act in [parents’] place.”

Various French authorities across numerous municipalities had said that there has been a downturn in violence, according to Politico. Around 72 people were arrested between Monday night and early on Tuesday – a significant decrease from previous days.

Four offices of police or gendarmes were also attacked late on Monday, the Paris interior ministry said, but there were no injuries sustained by law enforcement officials. Around 45,000 police officers were mobilized across the country on Monday.

“I’ll still be very cautious over the coming days and weeks,” Macron told mayors of French areas affected by the violence in a summit at the Elysee Palace on Monday, broadcaster BFMTV reported on Tuesday. “But the peak we experienced in the first nights is over.”

Macron has also pledged to “start the painstaking, long-term work needed to understand the deeper reasons that led to these events,” according to an official at the president’s office.

However, Macron has also called for vigilance within the ranks of the police amid concerns that violence may again ramp up this month during France’s national holiday on July 13 and 14.

The police officer who fatally shot the 17-year-old boy last week remains in custody as of Tuesday. He is charged with homicide.

Despite numerous pontifications to the contrary, it was always going to go this way. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the idiot professional political consultants, those enlisted by the Sea Island billionairesto try and drag the $100 bill on a fishing string through the MAGA hood, were only going to fool the first few blocks of voters; after that, people wised up.

Theproblems are too numerousto encapsulate; however, for the sake of brevity they can be argued into three main buckets:(1) Fakery– the entire dishonest operation from the outset (triggered visibly in ’21, originating back in ’18) was based on deception, astroturf and false pretenses.(2) The candidate just isn’t that good, is inauthentic in the extreme, zero private sector understanding, and is dependent on #1. =(3) Transparently a Big Club operation==, surrounded by the most expensive deceptions the GOPe can muster.

I said last summer the DeSantis campaign would collapse upon itself as sunlight poured in. That’s exactly what has been happening. Despite their initial trust deposits,Florida Republican voters= are now a case study in ‘not going to be fooled again==’. Once you see the strings on the marionettes, you can never return to that moment in the performance when you did not see them. It doesn’t matter how good the stage presentation; the strings are visible, and continued pretending only makes it worse.

(Politico) – A top spokesperson for Ron DeSantis’ super PAC is sounding a decidedly dour note on the Florida governor’s presidential prospects, saying his campaign is facing an “uphill battle” and is trailing badly in the key nominating states.

Calling the DeSantis campaign, the “clear underdog,” he added: “In the first four states which matter tremendously, polls are a lot tighter, we are still clearly down. We’re down double digits, we have work to do.”

Michael Kives, the ex-aide to Hillary Clinton-turned-Hollywood super-agent, seemed unbothered by FTX’s $700 million lawsuit against his firm while hanging out in London with former President Bill Clinton.

In photos exclusively obtained by The Post, Kives was pictured Monday exchanging some laughs with his former boss during a stroll through the capital’s streets.

The pair were dressed casually in jeans and light jackets and trailed by a small entourage during the London walkabout — which took place on the eve of Clinton’s trip to Albania.

The former president received a medal for his role in ending the Kosovo War in the late 1990s.

Clinton, 76, was overheard talking about the war in Iraq with Kives, who served as an aide to Bill Clinton and also Hillary Clinton during her stint as a US senator.

He later became a Hollywood agent with well-known clients including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Katy Perry.

The Post reached out to Kives and Bill Clinton for comment.

The major Democratic donor is the co-founder and managing partner of investment firm K5 Global, which was sued last month by bankrupt crypto exchange FTX.

The complaint said Kives’s firm received a whopping $700 million in misappropriated assets from FTX and its disgraced founder Sam Bankman-Fried in 2022, just months before his empire collapsed.

Bankman-Fried purportedly referred to Kives as “probably, the most connected person I’ve ever met” and “a one-stop shop” for important connections in politics and Hollywood.

The complaint alleged that Bankman-Fried lavished K5 Global and its co-founders, Kives and Bryan Baum, with cash as part of his bid to gain political influence and celebrity clout.

Bankman-Fried approved investments in deals that benefitted K5 Global using FTX customer funds, though they provided no benefit to the platform or its customers, according to the complaint.

Phoenix City Council Votes Unanimously to Donate Hundreds of Firearms Valued at Roughly $200,000 to Ukraine

The City of Phoenix’s far-left City Council quietly voted last Wednesday to unanimously approve a plan to send hundreds of firearms, valued at an estimated $200,000, to Ukraine.

The Council consists of eight members, elected by their district, and the Mayor representing the city at large. Radical left Mayor Katie Gallego and Council members approved nearly 150 agenda items, including the firearms transfer agreement, in one swift motion.

Firearms that were lost or forfeited following a court order and remain in the city’s possession for 30 days or more will be given away to Biden, the Democrats, and the Globalists’ favorite in the escalating war.

According to ARS 12-945, when a firearm is unclaimed, “the agency shall sell the firearm to any business that is authorized to receive and dispose of the firearm under federal and state law and that shall sell the firearm to the public according to federal and state law.” In accordance with the statute, the proceeds from the sale are paid to the city’s general fund.

However, the new plan states that Phoenix will “transfer” these guns through a private company. It is unclear whether donating firearms to a foreign country is legal.

KJZZ reports,

Phoenix leaders have unanimously approved a plan to send firearms to police in Ukraine. It’s the first time the City Council has approved donating unclaimed firearms outside the U.S.

Arizona law requires cities to sell forfeited firearms — that includes handguns, rifles and shotguns turned into police after courts ordered the owners to forfeit them. But there is no requirement for unclaimed firearms — essentially they end up in the police department’s lost and found. After 30 days, Phoenix can sell or donate them.

The city expects to ship between 500 and 600 firearms valued at about $200,000 to the National Police of Ukraine. It’s a law enforcement agency approved by the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive them. A Phoenix spokesperson said the National Police of Ukraine previously received unclaimed firearms from the Miami Police Department.

According to a Phoenix council report, “Only 9mm, 45mm, 39mm and 12 gauge firearms will be sent.”

As noted by Arizona Daily Independent, D.T. Gruelle, the company contracted to transfer the firearms, partneres with the Ukrainian Arsenal of Liberty, which “was formed by members of the Ukrainian Parliament to procure firearms in the U.S. to equip Ukrainian citizens to better defend themselves and increase the country’s defenses against hostility.”

Arizona Daily Independent reports,

“Armed civilians are the first line of defense,” the website notes, adding that training and arming the civilian Ukrainians “is the best form of protection” from foreign invasion.

“We aim to gear and train Ukrainian noncombatants to effectively protect themselves by soliciting American citizens to donate firearms, ammunition, and support equipment,” the UAL website adds.

The Phoenix City Council could require that any contract with D.T. Gruelle contain safeguards to ensure donated guns intended for Ukraine’s police professionals do not end up owned by Ukrainian citizens or used for other purposes.

Arizona Republicans quickly chimed in, calling it “Fast and Furious Part 2” and “absolutely absurd.” They further slammed the Council for wasting city resources and providing weapons “with no accountability re: who obtains them.”

As domestic abuse survivor and former Phoenix mayoral candidate Merissa Hamilton noted, the Democrats would be furious if the guns were given or sold to endangered, law-abiding Americans.

China cancels visit by EU’s top diplomat

Beijing has not offered any explanation for the move

China has cancelled a planned visit by the EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, a spokesperson for the bloc announced on Tuesday. The diplomat’s trip was reportedly scheduled for next week.

“Unfortunately, we were informedby the Chinese counterparts that the envisaged dates next week areno longer possible and we must now look for alternatives,” spokesperson Nabila Massrali told Reuters in a written statement.

Beijing had not confirmed the visit and has provided no comment on its apparent cancellation, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stating at a regular press briefing on Tuesday that she did not have any information to share on Borrell’s potential trip.

The visit was announced by the EU’s envoy to China, Jorge Toledo, on the sidelines of the 11th World Peace Forum in Beijing on Sunday. Borrell was to travel to China next Monday, Toledo said, seeking to address all outstanding issues with Beijing, including “partnership,” “competition” and “systemic rivalry.”

“This will be the place to raise all these issues, especially the strategic issues that we have with China,” Toledo stated, adding that Borrell was scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang.

Borrell had been due to visit Beijing in April this year, shortly after EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron toured the country. However, the top diplomat tested positive for coronavirus and the trip was rescheduled.

The top EU diplomat has previously given mixed signals on ties with China, calling it a “rival” but also a partner.

He has pointed to two major “strategic security issues” with China – namely its growing alliance with Russia and neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict – and the issue of Taiwan, regarded by Beijing as an integral part of its territory.
