BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium’s top migration official on Monday criticized Hungary for threatening to send a bus convoy of migrants to Brussels in retaliation against European Union policies and suggested they would be stopped at the border.

Hungary’s anti-immigrant government signaled Friday that it is serious about a plan to provide asylum-seekers free one-way travel to Brussels, a measure meant to pressure the European Commission into dropping heavy fines against the country for its restrictive asylum policies.

In June, the European Court of Justice ordered Hungary to pay a fine of 200 million euros ($216 million) for persistently breaking the bloc’s asylum rules, and an additional 1 million euros per day until it brings policies into line with EU law.

The commission, the EU’s powerful executive branch, has its headquarters in the Belgian capital.

Nicole de Moor, Belgium's migration minister, said Hungary's threat “undermines solidarity and cooperation within the Union. Belgium continues to advocate a joint, coordinated policy in which respect for European values and international obligations are central.”

In a statement, de Moor’s office said that Hungary's going ahead with the convoy "would be a flagrant violation of European and international agreements. Belgium will therefore not provide access” to any such migrant arrivals.

De Moor has asked Belgium’s EU ambassador to speak to his Hungarian counterpart about the threat. She also wants the commission to take a firm stand against it.

The statement noted that the buses would have to “unlawfully cross the territory of other member states to arrive illegally in Belgium.”

They would have to cross either France or Germany – which along with Luxembourg and the Netherlands surround Belgium – and possibly transit other EU member countries like Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia or the Czech Republic.

All are part Europe's Schengen Area, a group of 29 countries, most of them EU nations, which people can move between without facing ID checks.

However, Austria, France, Germany and Slovenia currently have checks in place due to concerns about security and migrant movements.

Fraud Grips $112.8 Billion U.S. Food Stamp Program, $61.5 Million in Stolen Benefits Replaced

Fraud in the government’s food stamp program is so pervasive that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agency that administers it, launched a special system to facilitate the replacement of the welfare benefit when recipients claim it stolen. In the two years since the Biden administration created the program, the government has doled out a hefty $61.5 million to replace pilfered food stamps—rebranded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by the Obama administration to eliminate stigma—in 127,290 cases. Keep in mind, this is in addition to the staggering $112.8 billion that Uncle Sam spends to provide 42.1 million with free groceries, according to the latest government figures.

The USDA’s SNAP Replacement of Stolen Benefits Dashboard reveals that 79% of claims were approved by the agency and that 339,269 fraudulent transactions were identified through approved stolen benefits claims. Recipients in every state in the nation have submitted claims and New York has by far the most food stamp fraud cases—50,678. Maryland is second with 33,509, followed by Illinois (16,369), Texas (11,633), Washington State (4,208), New Jersey (3,630), Arizona (3,541), North Carolina (3,434), Indiana (3,309) and New Mexico (3,027). Three states have reported over 2,000 cases and more than half a dozen have over 1,000. The federal government allows states to replace benefits stolen as far back as October 2022, according to the USDA dashboard.

“The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is aware of increased reports of Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) theft due to card skimming, cloning, and similar fraudulent methods,” the agency announced in January 2023, revealing that at the end of 2022 President Biden signed a measure that includes a provision for the replacement of stolen food stamp benefits with federal funds. The USDA cites the section of the law that requires it to issue guidance to state agencies and “promulgate regulations to protect and replace SNAP benefits stolen via card skimming, card cloning, and other similar fraudulent methods.” Other similar fraudulent methods may include, but are not limited to, scamming through deceitful phone calls or text messaging that mimics official state agency messaging and phishing. “A theft that resulted from any of these methods would be eligible for replacement,” according to the USDA.

Rather than so easily replacing the stolen benefit, perhaps the government should create a system to crack down on the rampant fraud. Besides saving American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, it seems like a more efficient way to operate. Afterall, the nation’s bloated food stamp program has long been plagued by problems that have fleeced the system out of large sums. A few years ago, the USDA disclosed that it sees over a billion dollars annually in food stamp fraud. Many of the retailers authorized by the government to accept food stamps also engage in illegal practices, the agency has found. A few years ago, nearly 200 people were arrested in Florida for operating a sophisticated ring in which 22,000 fraudulent food stamp transactions totaling $3.7 million were recorded by a task force of local and federal authorities. In 2016 the feds busted the largest food stamp fraud operation in history, a $13 million scheme run by flea market retailers in the largely black and Hispanic areas of south Florida’s Miami-Dade County known as Opa-Locka and Hialeah.

President Biden’s nonchalance about Chinese spying, hacking and election interference is a cause for national worry — and his indifference to the Chinese threat extends even to his own White House.

Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su’s catastrophic 2021 face-plant while serving as California’s labor secretary made China stronger, while making the world a more dangerous place for Americans and American ideals.

Yet Kamala Harris and her backers, including United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, say they’d like Su to stay in her post after Jan. 20, despite the Senate’s refusal to confirm her nomination for 548 days and counting. That makes her America’s longest-serving unconfirmed cabinet officer.

Su’s confirmation troubles stem from her time as California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s secretary of labor.In that job, she ignored warnings about vulnerabilities in the state’s unemployment benefits system, claiming that tougher ID verification standards would disproportionately hurt black and brown Californians.

But her squeamishness left the system vulnerable:When COVID hit, Su lost some $32 billion to fraudsters who hacked the benefits program.That staggering sum — about a third of all American unemployment insurance fraud losses during the pandemic — included a $20 billion federal loan intended to backstop California’s pandemic-stressed unemployment trust fund.

Multiple sources now say most of the lost money, about $26 billion, was captured by international crime gangs operating on behalf of foreign adversaries — and that taxpayer cash stolen by China’s Advanced Persistent Threat 41 and others is already being deployed against Americans and American interests.

“The staggering fraud committed against California’s EDD during the pandemic is alarming, but the real danger lies in what those stolen billions are now funding,” said Paul Eckloff, a retired US Secret Service special agent who now works to thwart fraud at LexisNexis Risk Solutions.

“Nation-states and transnational criminal groups are using this money to fuel illicit narcotics, human trafficking and activities that actively undermine our financial institutions and national security,” Eckloff told me.

“Even more alarming, these groups haven’t stopped — they’re continuing to target state programs across the country, promoting terror, crime, and undermining the rule of law,” he said.

If Su remains in a Harris administration, there’s likely worse news ahead: Those who benefited most from California’s unemployment insurance fraud scandal have learned “an important lesson” from Su’s rise, said an intelligence expert.

• “They’ve learned that American governments are an easy mark because you won’t get caught,” the source said.

• “What we have unfortunately seen is that more and more of these transnational crime groups [are] targeting US governments,” the expert explained, capitalizing on “antiquated tools and technology in government.”

• In Washington, Su has made things worse, using her federal authority to help California officials scrub from state documents any reference to the scandal.

• “It was a classic, bureaucratic ‘cover-your-ass’ move,” said a California state employee close to Newsom. Like others we spoke with, the source requested anonymity for fear of retribution.

• Su has stonewalled journalists’ demands for public documents and refused to respond meaningfully to two congressional investigations of California’s COVID scandal.

“My requests for information have been met with silence or evasive non-answers,” said Rep. Michelle Steel (R-Calif.). “Julie Su refuses to release vital information to the public or Congress about this taxpayer abuse.”

Nevertheless, Su’s star is rising in Kamala Harris’ Democratic Party, appearing as a featured speaker at multiple Democratic National Convention events last month.

There’s ample evidence of personal affection between Harris and Su, both products of the Bay Area’s political monoculture.

When the vice president introduced Su to a union crowd in Philadelphia last summer, Harris pointedly gave her a verbal promotion: She first introduced Su as “acting Secretary Julie Su” and then — abandoning constitutional protocol requiring the Senate to confirm cabinet members — ostentatiously corrected herself: “I’ll call her Labor Secretary. I’m not going to say the word ‘acting.’”

Following Harris’ flattering introduction, Su thanked “my sister from California,” then went on a tear, eagerly telling the crowd that “enforcement” of business regulations is “the key” to achieving the left’s social goals.

“Believe me,” she said, “you can’t achieve empowerment and equity without enforcement.”

Su bragged,“I like to say we’re in a golden age of enforcement,” “empowering workers” and “building equity into everything we do.”In other words, America’s real enemy is Americans who run businesses.

Su’s Philadelphia audience of union activists heard her words as she intended them: as a call to class war.

They cheered the coming of a Golden Age of Enforcement of Everything — everything but official misfeasance and crimes committed against the United States by foreign adversaries.

A suspect is in custody after a teen is critically hurt in a shooting at a Nebraska high school

Omaha police arrested a suspect about half an hour after a shooting Tuesday that critically injured a teenage boy at a high school in Nebraska’s largest city.

Families rushed to Omaha Northwest High School after the shooting was reported by the school resource officer during lunch at 12:23 p.m. Omaha Police Deputy Chief Sherie Thomas said officers from several departments quickly responded to the school and found the victim inside.

School shootings have become all too common across the country, with the most recent major one happening just last week in Georgia where two teachers and two students were killed in the town of Winder, and another teacher and eight more students were wounded. Dozens of school shootings have been reported in recent years, including especially deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut; Parkland, Florida; and Uvalde, Texas. The classroom killings often trigger debates about gun control but little has changed in national gun laws.

Thomas said police believe the shooting was an isolated incident between two students. The 14-year-old suspect was arrested three blocks away about 30 minutes later.

The leader of the congressional committee investigating the assassination attempt on Donald Trump says the autopsy report of shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks is stomach-churning. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., the top Republican in charge of the probe told DailyMail.com that the report and its grisly details are 'gruesome.' However, he did not provide a timetable for when the autopsy would be released publicly. Kelly, who represents Butler, Pennsylvania, where the shooting occurred, has led several investigative trips to the fairgrounds where Trump spoke to further uncover details about the tragedy that left one dead and several, including the former president, injured.

He also mentioned how it is 'really important' to remember the Crooks family when considering the autopsy, noting how they 'lost somebody' that fateful day as well.

Kelly also disclosed that the FBI told him Crooks exhibited strange behavior before the shooting.

That included 'walking around the house talking to himself' and 'flapping his arms,' Punchbowl news first reported.

'There was some indication that something was wrong,' the chairman said.

Facebook admits to scraping every Australian adult user's public photos and posts to train AI, with no opt-out option

Facebook has admitted that it scrapes the public photos, posts and other data of Australian adult users to train its AI models and provides no opt-out option, even though it allows people in the European Union to refuse consent.

Meta's global privacy director Melinda Claybaugh was pressed at an inquiry as to whether the social media giant was hoovering up the data of all Australians in order to build its generative artificial intelligence tools, and initially rejected that claim.

Labor senator Tony Sheldon asked whether Meta had used Australian posts from as far back as 2007 to feed its AI products, to which Ms Claybaugh responded "we have not done that".

But that was quickly challenged by Greens senator David Shoebridge.

Shoebridge: "The truth of the matter is that unless you have consciously set those posts to private since 2007, Meta has just decided that you will scrape all of the photos and all of the texts from every public post on Instagram or Facebook since 2007, unless there was a conscious decision to set them on private. That's the reality, isn't it?

Claybaugh: "Correct."

Ms Claybaugh added that accounts of people under 18 were not scraped, but when asked by Senator Sheldon whether public photos of his own children on his account would be scraped, Ms Claybaugh acknowledged they would.

More Inconsistencies in Official Story of the Georgia Apalachee High School Shooting

Colt Gray, 14 had not been seen in the neighborhood at his father’s home, where he reportedly lived, until the day of the shooting, according to a neighbor. A number of witnesses said that there was more than one shooter. Students and teachers reported simultaneous gunfire at opposite ends of the school. We previously reported that Colt and his father had been visited by the FBI in 2023 after he allegedly made threats on Discord about shooting up a high school. The school received a phone call warning shooting on the morning of the shooting event, but the school failed to shut down or use extra security.

A curious video features a teacher laughing as she holds the door closed to block the shooter during the event, however, a news source that the doors automatically lock when closed. The Western Journal claimed that the teacher’s inappropriate laughter was due to being nervous.

The NY Post reported that Colt Gray was abused by both of his parents, with his father allegedly yelling at him and the mother locking him and his siblings outside without food.

UPDATE: Marcee Gray, the mother of alleged US teen killer Colt Gray, reportedly called a school counsellor to warn of an “extreme emergency” after receiving a haunting text from her son.

UPDATE # 2: Colt Gray was questioned by the FBI in 2023 about school shooting threats on Discord, but he was not arrested because multiple people in Georgia, Virginia and New York had access to the email that was used.

"As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment.

The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.

The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.

With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.

This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved.

Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.

I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.

Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.

William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling.

Planned Parenthood has been found to 'illegally sell baby parts,' activist says

An Orlando-based conservative Christian group has called on Gov. Rick Scott to choke off all forms of state funding for Planned Parenthood, saying the organization has broken the law and doesn’t deserve taxpayer money.

In a letter dated Sept. 22, 2015, Florida Family Policy Council President John Stemberger thanked Scott for investigating state Planned Parenthood affiliates after videos showing officials discussing fetal tissue were released by the anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress this summer. But Stemberger wanted Scott to go further.

Stemberger said because of what the videos show, the group should not get money through the state’s Medicaid program and Title X, a federal grant program for family planning and preventive health services.

"No organization with a record of illegal activity and abuse, now found to also illegally sell baby parts and likely altering abortion practices to do so, should receive taxpayer dollars," Stemberger wrote. (GOP presidential candidate and former Gov. Jeb Bush ended direct state subsidies for the group in 2001.)
