Supreme Court Turns Away COVID-19 Vaccine Appeals

U.S. Supreme Court justices on June 24 rejected appeals brought over COVID-19 vaccines by Children’s Health Defense (CHD), a nonprofit founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate running for president.

The nation’s top court rejected an appeal seeking to overturn lower court rulings that found that CHD and its members lacked standing to sue the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its emergency authorizations of COVID-19 vaccines for minors.

The justices also rebuffed another CHD appeal in a case that challenged the COVID-19 vaccine mandate imposed on students at Rutgers University, a public college in New Jersey.

The Supreme Court did not comment on either denial. It included them in a lengthy list dealing with dozens of cases.

“Disappointing that the courts are closed to FDA fraud harming millions of Americans,” Robert Barnes, an attorney representing CHD in the FDA case, told The Epoch Times in an email.

He called for Congress to pass reforms.

Julio Gomez, an attorney representing CHD in the Rutgers case, told The Epoch Times in an email that the Supreme Court’s denials marked a sad day because clarity is needed on vaccines and the Supreme Court’s 1905 decision in Jacobson v. Massachusetts, which upheld a city’s law requiring vaccination against smallpox.

Mr. Gomez pointed to a recent federal appeals court ruling that determined that Jacobson did not apply to a case filed against a vaccine mandate in California because plaintiffs had produced evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines do not prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Lawyers for Rutgers and the government did not return requests for comment.

In the FDA case, CHD and parents in Texas and Florida argued that the regulatory agency cleared COVID-19 vaccines under emergency authorization despite COVID-19 posing less risk than influenza to children and without adequate clinical testing. The FDA also wrongly promoted the vaccines, the plaintiffs alleged.

U.S. District Judge Alan Albright tossed out the lawsuit in 2023, finding that CHD and the parents did not meet the requirements for standing, or the ability to sue over the actions, under Article III of the U.S. Constitution.

While the parents said their children were at risk of being vaccinated by other people, they did not show that they faced imminent harm because of the FDA issuing emergency authorization for COVID-19 vaccines, the judge said. Imminent harm is one requirement for standing.

Allegations have emerged that senior officials from the Departments of Veterans Affairs (DVA) and Defence appropriated the intellectual property of a suicide prevention app from a veteran-owned business.

Consulting firm Deloitte was reportedly paid more than $1M by Defence to develop the mental health phone app HeadStrength, partially based on intellectual property (IP) from another company, RedSix.

The chief executive of RedSix says the theft of his IP “almost destroyed me mentally, physically and financially.” It echoes a similar theft from Swiss8 by Defence and Deloitte previously reported in the Daily Telegraph ($).

While the otherwise successful, self-funded RedSix was dumped by government officials after a ministerial endorsement and offers of financial assistance that didn’t eventuate, its competitor Innowell Pty Ltd – part-owned by PwC and co-founded by Professor Jane Burns while she chaired a DVA national advisory committee – was paid $30M to develop discredited suicide prevention software including trials involving DVA staff and clients.

‘Never Trump’ Political Strategist Caught Attempting to Rape Underage Boy

Republican political operative Joel Searby, who has dedicated the last eight years to stopping Donald Trump, has been arrested and charged with attempting to meet and molest a young boy.

Searby is a political consultant who ran Evan McMullin’s independent 2016 campaign for president in a desperate effort by “Never Trumpers” to derail Donald Trump’s campaign. Searby has also been working with the Lincoln Project’s Rick Wilson to keep Trump out of office in 2024.

According to the arrest report, Searby contacted the 15-year-old boy using the messaging app Snapchat, a popular platform for teenagers, according to the Alachua Chronicle.

Authorities reported that Searby sent explicit photographs to a young boy, described sexual encounters, and inquired if the boy “had ever had a crush on an older man.”

Searby later attempted to arrange a secret meeting with the fifteen-year-old.

After receiving reports about the messages, law enforcement officials contacted the 15-year-old. Following discussions with the boy, authorities executed a search warrant at Searby’s residence. Searby was subsequently arrested and charged with lewd/lascivious conduct, two counts of obscene communication related to luring a minor to meet him for sex, and using a two-way communications device to facilitate a felony.

Searby’s is far from the only predator exposed within the NeverTrump community.

John Weaver, founder of the Lincoln Project, previously faced allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior toward young men, as reported by the New York Times.

Twenty-one young men and boys, as young as 14-year-old, accused Weaver of sending them unsolicited sexual messages.

Weaver apologized, stating, “To the men I made uncomfortable through my messages that I viewed as consensual mutual conversations at the time: I am truly sorry. They were inappropriate, and it was because of my failings that this discomfort was brought upon you,” according to Axios.

This news emerged shortly after Michael Knaapen, the head of the Maryland Democratic Party’s LGBTQ+ Diversity Leadership Council, was caught on video in a disturbing child predator sting by the vigilante group Predator Poachers.

Knaapen had also attempted to meet secretly with an underage boy.

Tennessee’s top election office has sent letters to more than 14,000 registered voters asking them to prove their citizenship, a move that alarmed voting rights advocates as possible intimidation.

The letters, dated June 13, warned that it is illegal in Tennessee for noncitizens to vote and provided instructions on how to update voter information. The list was developed after comparing voter rolls with data from the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security, said Doug Kufner, spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office, in a statement Tuesday.

Kufner described the data from the state’s homeland security department as a “snapshot” of a person’s first interaction with that agency. Some may not have been U.S. citizens when they obtained a driver’s license or ID card but have since been naturalized and “likely did not update their records,” he said.

“Accurate voter rolls are a vital component to ensuring election integrity, and Tennessee law makes it clear that only eligible voters are allowed to participate in Tennessee elections,” Kufner said.

When I first started researching this, I could hardly believe that it was true. A company in Switzerland known as “Final Spark” has constructed a bizarre hybrid biocomputer that combines lab-grown miniature human brains with conventional electronic circuits. This approach saves an extraordinary amount of energy compared to normal computers, but there is a big problem. The lab-grown miniature human brains keep wearing out and dying, and so scientists have to keep growing new ones to replace them.

Stem cells that are derived from human skin tissue are used to create the 16 spherical brain “organoids” that the system depends upon. I realize that this sounds like something straight out of a really bad science fiction movie, but it is actually happening.

Scientists at Final Spark are calling their hybrid computer “the Neuroplatform”, and it is being reported that it only uses “a fraction of the energy required to power a traditional set up”…

Swiss tech startup FinalSpark is now selling access to biocomputers that combine up to four tiny lab-grown human brains with silicon chips.

This new bioprocessing platform, called the Neuroplatform, uses small versions of human brains to do computer work instead of silicon chips. The company says it can fit 16 of these mini-brains onto the Neuroplatform and use a fraction of the energy required to power a traditional set up.

The platform, currently adopted by nine institutions, integrates hardware, software and biology to construct a processing system that is energy-efficient and high-performing.

This “breakthrough” is being hailed as a way to save a gigantic amount of energy.

Just before Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton faced off in their second presidential debate, then-National Intelligence Director James Clapper met in the White House with a small group of advisers to President Obama to hatch a plan to put out a first-of-its-kind intelligence report warning the voting public that "the Russian government" was interfering in the election by allegedly breaching the Clinton campaign’s email system.

On Oct. 7, 2016 – just two days before the presidential debate between Trump and Clinton – Clapper issued the unprecedented intelligence advisory with Obama’s personal blessing. It seemed to lend credence to what the Clinton camp was telling the media — that Trump was working with Russian President Vladimir Putin through a secret back channel to steal the election. Sure enough, the Democratic nominee pounced on it to smear Trump at the debate.

And that wouldn’t be the only historically consequential maneuver for Clapper, whose role in skewing presidential campaigns might deserve a special place in the annals of nefarious election meddling – by, in this case, a domestic, not foreign, intelligence service.

In 2020, he was the lead signatory on the “intelligence" statement that discredited the New York Post’s October bombshell exposing emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop, which documented how Hunter’s corrupt Burisma paymasters had met with Joe Biden when he was vice president. It was released Oct. 19, just three days before Trump and Biden debated each other in Nashville. Fifty other U.S. “Intelligence Community” officials and experts signed the seven-page document, which claimed "the arrival on the U.S. political scene of emails purportedly belonging to Vice President Biden’s son Hunter, much of it related to his time serving on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”

In hindsight, Clapper's well-timed pseudo-intelligence in 2016 and 2020 helped Clinton and Biden make the case against Trump as a potentially Kremlin-compromised figure, charges that crippled his presidency and later arguably denied him reelection.

The phony laptop letter actually helped Biden seal his narrow victory since many of his voters in the close election told pollsters they would have had second thoughts about backing him had they known of the damning materials contradicting his denials he knew anything about his son’s shady foreign dealings.

In 2016, Clapper appeared to use his authority as Obama’s chief of intelligence to try to trip up Trump on behalf of Clinton.

But not everyone in the administration was on board with releasing his official statement about supposed Kremlin meddling.

Then-FBI Director James Comey had also met in the Situation Room in early October to discuss the plan. But Comey balked at accusing “Russia’s senior-most officials” of authorizing the "alleged hack" of the Clinton campaign and trying “to interfere in the U.S. election process,” as the two-page document claimed. Conspicuously, the FBI did not sign on to the intelligence.

Still, Clapper implied in his statement that this was the finding of the entire “U.S. Intelligence Community” and that it was “confident the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails.” Aside from Clapper's Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the only other agency that attached its name to the assessment was the Department of Homeland Security. Also remarkable was the paucity of underlying evidence. The joint ODNI-DHS statement based its conclusion primarily on a report by a cybersecurity contractor hired by the Clinton campaign’s law firm, who later walked back his finding in a sworn congressional deposition, allowing: “We did not have concrete evidence [Russian agents stole campaign emails].”

NASA-IBM Collaboration Develops INDUS Large Language Models for Advanced Science Research

Collaborations with private, non-federal partners through Space Act Agreements are a key component in the work done by NASA's Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team (IMPACT).

A collaboration with International Business Machines (IBM) has produced INDUS, a comprehensive suite of large language models (LLMs) tailored for the domains of Earth science, biological and physical sciences, heliophysics, planetary sciences, and astrophysics and trained using curated scientific corpora drawn from diverse data sources.

INDUS contains two types of models; encoders and sentence transformers. Encoders convert natural language text into numeric coding that can be processed by the LLM.

The INDUS encoders were trained on a corpus of 60 billion tokens encompassing astrophysics, planetary science, Earth science, heliophysics, biological, and physical sciences data.

Its custom tokenizer developed by the IMPACT-IBM collaborative team improves on generic tokenizers by recognizing scientific terms like biomarkers and phosphorylated.

Over half of the 50,000-word vocabulary contained in INDUS is unique to the specific scientific domains used for its training.

The INDUS encoder models were used to fine tune the sentence transformer models on approximately 268 million text pairs, including titles/abstracts and questions/answers.

By providing INDUS with domain-specific vocabulary, the IMPACT-IBM team achieved superior performance over open, non-domain specific LLMs on a benchmark for biomedical tasks, a scientific question-answering benchmark, and Earth science entity recognition tests.

By designing for diverse linguistic tasks and retrieval augmented generation, INDUS is able to process researcher questions, retrieve relevant documents, and generate answers to the questions.

For latency sensitive applications, the team developed smaller, faster versions of both the encoder and sentence transformer models.

Validation tests demonstrate that INDUS excels in retrieving relevant passages from the science corpora in response to a NASA-curated test set of about 400 questions.

IBM researcher Bishwaranjan Bhattacharjee commented on the overall approach:

“We achieved superior performance by not only having a custom vocabulary but also a large specialized corpus for training the encoder model and a good training strategy.

For the smaller, faster versions, we used neural architecture search to obtain a model architecture and knowledge distillation to train it with supervision of the larger model.”

An astronaut captured an elusive glimpse of red lightning from space.

NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick imaged the rare red sprite phenomenon from the International Space Station earlier in the year, which may build on earlier studies of the lightning type on the orbiting complex.

"Super lucky a few weeks ago when shooting a timelapse of a lightning storm off the coast of South Africa.

One of the frames in the timelapse had a red sprite," NASA astronaut Dominick wrote on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday (June 20).

"A rare event. My knowledge is pretty much just from Wikipedia but I want to know more," he added, adding in a second post that he would like to collaborate with "red sprite experts" for "tips on how to capture more of these."

Red sprites, also known as red lightning, occur during some extremely intense thunderstorms.

Most lightning flashes move down from the clouds to the ground, a sprite goes in the opposite direction: up, into the upper atmosphere.

These sprites are very brief, lasting only for about a millisecond, which makes them difficult to observe even with professional equipment from orbit. That said, they can be very large, sometimes spanning as large as 30 miles (48 km) across.

Lightning has been studied for many years on the ISS, including 2015 images of different phenomena (blue jets, or upside-down lightning) that European Space Agency astronaut Andreas Mogensen captured from space.

His photos made the covers of the top-tier prestigious journals Science and Nature. Mogensen also managed to capture red sprites of his own during his latest 2023-24 excursion to space.

Mogensen used a new camera during his second excursion on the ISS to "study the formation and development of these types of lightning in much more detail," Mogensen told Space.com last year.

The camera is neuromorphic, obtaining images differently than the way standard cameras do.

"Instead of taking images by collecting light through the camera shutter, the camera measures differences in light and uses that information to create an image," ESA officials wrote in a statement in September 2023.

The lightning may also be changing due to human-induced climate change, according to an April 2023 presentation on the study at the European Geophysical Union hybrid conference held in Vienna and online.

The new study, lead author Olivier Chanrion with DTU Space said at the time, provides "the opportunity to analyze and quantify their (lightning storms') impact, and to check to which extent they are associated with overshooting thunderclouds tops that inject greenhouse gases and aerosols in the stratosphere."

Collins Aerospace pulls back from NASA spacesuit contract

As NASA grapples with more spacesuit problems on the International Space Station, the company it selected to develop replacement suits says it is pulling back from that effort.

In a statement to SpaceNews June 25, a spokesperson for Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of RTX Corp., said the company and NASA had agreed to “descope” work on spacesuit development for the ISS under task orders that are part of a contract awarded two years ago. Reuters first reported that the company was seeking to drop out of the contract.

“After a thorough evaluation, Collins Aerospace and NASA mutually agreed to descope Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) task orders. Collins remains committed to supporting NASA and human spaceflight programs,” the company stated.

NASA announced in June 2022 that it selected Collins and Axiom Space for the xEVAS program, which seeks to develop spacesuits commercially that will be offered to NASA as a service.

NASA subsequently awarded a task order to Collins to work on a suit for use at the ISS, while Axiom received a task order to develop spacesuits for Artemis lunar missions.

Collins had publicly reported good progress on that suit. In February, the company said it completed tests of a prototype of the suit on parabolic aircraft flights that generated 20 seconds of microgravity at a time.

“My honest opinion is that it is a far more capable suit,” Danny Olivas, a former NASA astronaut who later became chief test astronaut at Collins, said at the time.

The company did not disclose why it sought to descope the work on the project.

Industry sources said they believed that Collins had suffered delays and cost overruns and concluded that it was no longer feasible for the company to continue work on it, particularly given the fixed-price nature of the contract.

NASA has not commented on the decision by Collins to end work on the suit and what steps, if any, it would take to find a new suit developer.

Besides Axiom and Collins, SpaceX has been independently developing its own spacesuit that will be tested on the Polaris Dawn private astronaut mission flying on a Crew Dragon. That mission is scheduled to launch as soon as mid-July.

NASA issued “crossover” task orders to both Axiom and Collins last July, allowing Axiom to start examining how it could adapt its lunar spacesuit for use on the ISS and Collins to adapt its ISS spacesuit for lunar missions.

Axiom has been focused on the Artemis suit, including a recent integrated test with NASA and SpaceX to demonstrate how the suits would integrate with the Starship lunar lander and other elements of the Artemis 3 mission.

The announcement by Collins comes after NASA experienced two consecutive scrubbed spacewalks from the ISS. NASA called off a June 13 spacewalk after astronaut Matt Dominick reported a “suit discomfort” issue shortly before the spacewalk was scheduled to begin.

NASA did not elaborate on the specific problem with the suit.

NASA astronauts Tracy C. Dyson and Mike Barratt were scheduled to perform another spacewalk June 24, carrying out the tasks scheduled for the earlier, postponed spacewalk.

However, just as the outer hatch to the airlock opened, Dyson reported a water leak when she disconnected a service and cooling umbilical line to her suit, as planned.

“There’s literally water everywhere,” Dyson reported as the water turned to ice, forming a layer on her helmet visor. Reconnecting the line stopped the leak, but NASA called off the spacewalk as a precaution.

The agency said June 25 that astronauts inspected the suit and examined procedures for future spacewalks, but did not confirm if a planned July 2 spacewalk would take place as scheduled.

The spacesuits currently used on the station, known as Extravehicular Mobility Units or EMUs, are decades old and have suffered problems as they age.

In 2022, NASA held off using the suits for routine spacewalks for several months after an astronaut reported seeing a thin layer of water on the inside of his visor at the end of a spacewalk.

NASA concluded that “integrated system performance” rather than a specific hardware flaw caused that water to form. NASA safety advisers have warned about the risks posed by the aging EMUs for some time.

“It is an undeniable fact that the 40-year-old EMUs used in ISS operations are reaching the end of their useful life,” NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel noted in a 2019 recommendation, calling for an “immediate transition” to new suits “before the risk to EVA [extravehicular activity] becomes unmanageable.”

That recommendation remained open as of the panel’s latest annual report in January.

Interactive Brokers on Wednesday disclosed a $48 million loss due to a glitch at the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month that at one point showed a 99% drop in the stock prices of some companies, including Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.

The brokerage had filed claims with the NYSE to compensate it for these losses, but the exchange denied its ask, Interactive said. Outages caused by software and hardware malfunction have become common as trading moved from floors and pits to electronic systems, but glitches can roil markets and frustrate investors. In some cases, they can also invite scrutiny from regulators and disputes with brokers. Interactive said its losses stemmed from an attempt by its clients to take advantage of the massive drop in Berkshire's stock price.

Customers rushed to snap up Berkshire's Class A shares after the price plunged to $185 from $622,000 each. They placed "buy" orders after trading in the stock was halted, expecting their trades to be fulfilled at a price near $185.

However, after resumption, the clients' trades were executed at prices as high as $741,971.39, Interactive said. Its request for busting trades that were completed at such "anomalously" high prices was rejected by the NYSE, the brokerage added. Interactive then took over a "substantial" portion of these trades. The Air Force Research Laboratory successfully flew the first of a second- generation of Autonomous Collaborative Platforms known as the XQ-67A demonstrator, built and flown in the Off-Board Sensing Station, or OBSS, program Feb. 28, 2024.

The AFRL OBSS program is the validation of a design, build and test process that has resulted in the XQ-67A.

It is the first of its kind to be built on a common chassis or genus — much like that of a motor vehicle frame — and with its first successful flight, the XQ-67A is proof that the genus approach works.

This enables a faster and more cost-effective replication of the aircraft.

This new approach also responds to the challenge of great power competition by speeding delivery of affordable, advanced capabilities to the warfighter.

AFRL provides our nation and our warfighters with advanced technologies leading to reliable, effective and integrated capabilities for use today and tomorrow.

Designed, built, ground tested and flown in just over two years, AFRL’s XQ-67A builds on the success of the XQ-58A Valkyrie and complements the Air Force Test Center’s X-62 VISTA and F-16 VENOM efforts to speed fielding of Collaborative Combat Aircraft, or CCA. AFRL flight testing actively pursues initiatives that allow AFRL to deliver science and technology at the speed of need through agile and continuous development.

The XQ-67A is remotely piloted but is capable of autonomous flight. Under AFRL’s Low Cost Attritable Aircraft Platform Sharing, or LCAAPS, program, the lab’s Aerospace Systems Directorate explored development of a chassis or “genus” as the foundational core architecture from which several “species” of aircraft can be built.

This provides an alternate acquisition approach for ACP aircraft using a product line philosophy that enables faster development, lower costs and opportunities for frequent technology refreshes.

Republican Chad Young’s congressional campaign is based on his idea of being a “patriot,” abolishing “anything big” — including multiple federal agencies — and completely eliminating taxes.

Young is the founder of the Life Skills Programs — a nonprofit for troubled youths — in his hometown of Rogers, Arkansas, with a second location in Pratt. Young has lived in Lawrence on and off for two years and is seeking the GOP nomination in a crowded 2nd District race.

Young defines a patriot as a constitutionalist who supports freedom of the people, regardless of gender, sexuality, or race.

“I think it’s very important to have different perspectives and look at how we can grow as a nation,” Young said. “We don’t know one another.”

One perspective he won’t accept is that of a “tyrant.” Young believes that “very few of the politicians we have in place are not tyrants,” citing those who would turn against the Second and Fourth amendments as examples. French President Emmanuel Macron’s allies could distance themselves from him ahead of snap elections as the leader has become a “toxic brand” due to his waning popularity, Bloomberg has reported, citing sources.

The heads of communication at the Elysee Palace have admitted they have “no polls or data to suggest candidates should publicly align themselves with Macron to retain their seats,” the outlet said on Wednesday, citing attendees at an emergency meeting of top French government officials.

Soon after Macron called snap elections earlier this month, dozens of lawmakers who initially supported the French leadernow want him to keep a “low profile” as his behavior grows increasingly “erratic,” Bloomberg claimed.

Congress had launched a review as a result of rising costs as Washington seeks to replace a key element of its nuclear triad

The US Air Force has sacked the official responsible for developing its next-generation ‘Sentinel’ intercontinental ballistic missile. The rocket is earmarked to replace the 1970s-era Minuteman III as the land-based element of Washington’s nuclear triad.

Earlier this year, Congress launched a review of the program after its costs ballooned by at least 37% to an estimated $131 billion.In its report on the Defense Department’s fiscal 2025 budget request, the House Appropriations Committee said it “was stunned to learn” of the massive increase in costs.

The lawmakers eventually agreed to earmark $3.4 billion for the program in the coming year, $340 million less than requested.

According to a statement by the US Air Force, quoted by several media outlets, Colonel Charles Clegg was ousted as director of the Sentinel Systems project on Monday “because he did not follow organizational procedures.” A spokesperson for the Air Force cited a “loss of confidence,” but denied that the dismissal had been “directly related” to the ongoing congressional review.

In January, Bloomberg reportedthat a 1982 law had mandated the scrutiny after the project overspent its budget by more than a third over the course of two years.

Now, the Pentagon and Joint Chiefs of Staff are having to justify the cost overruns and present convincing arguments to lawmakers. The lion’s share of the sum is apparently needed to upgrade existing launch sites and communications lines.

This task, estimated to last nearly ten years, will be a lengthy and complicated endeavor "involving real estate purchases, construction, deconstruction, removal and installation of equipment and nuclear certification,” the Senate Armed Services Committee said in its fiscal 2024 budget report.

Former President Donald Trump is the stronger candidate to protect democracy, a Washington Post poll found Wednesday, undercutting the Biden campaign’s leading reelection pitch.

Polling of six swing states that President Joe Biden won in 2020 shows that voters believe Trump is a greater defender of democracy than Biden, outpacing the current president by 11 points.

“Which candidate do you think would do a better job handling each of the following? Threats to democracy in the U.S.,” the Post and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University poll asked respondents:

Trump: 44 percent

Biden: 33 percent

Neither: 16 percent

Both: 7 percent

The poll sampled 3,515 registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin from April to May with a ± 2.9 percentage point margin of error.

Some Democrats are worried about Biden’s strategy of campaigning on democracy, especially after several legal challenges were thrown at Trump and a Manhattan jury convicted him in May.

Inflation, immigration, and crime are much larger concerns among voters, polls consistently show. Trump leads in those categories.

“It is unclear to many of us watching from the outside whether the president and his core team realize how dire the situation is right now, and whether they even have a plan to fix it. That is scary,” a Democrat strategist close to the Biden campaign told Axios.

Scientists closer to finding alien life after uncovering new 'telltale signs' of an inhabited planet

Alien life has yet to be found in space, but a new study has uncovered 'telltale' signs of an inhabited planet.

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) discovered that greenhouse gases, like those emitted on Earth, would mean a distant world had been terraformed - or artificially altered.

Signatures of methane, ethane, and propane, along with gases made of nitrogen and fluorine or sulfur and fluorine could indicate technology-using life forms due to the gases only forming through manufacturing.

Scientists ran simulations on a hypothetical planet, finding NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could spot the gasses as easily as it could ozone on Earth.

UCR astrobiologist and lead study author Edward Schwieterman said: 'For us, these gases are bad because we don't want to increase warming.

'But they'd be good for a civilization that perhaps wanted to forestall an impending ice age or terraform an otherwise uninhabitable planet in their system, as humans have proposed for Mars.'

The five gases proposed by the researchers are used on Earth in industrial applications such as making computer chips.

Researchers chose to simulate a planet in the TRAPPIST-1 system because it is home to seven known rocky words and is one of the most studied planetary systems.

They used the Planetary Spectrum Generator (PSG), which is a model designed to synthesize and retrieve data about a planet's atmosphere and surface.

The team simulated the five gasses on the hypothetical planet and calculated how many observations JWST would need to detect them using its Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which sees wavelengths from 5 to 12 micrometers.

MIRI features both a camera and a spectrograph, which separates incoming light by its frequency and records the resulting spectrum.

MIRI also has sensitive detectors that lets it see redshifted light of distant galaxies, newly forming stars, and faintly visible comets as well as objects in the Kuiper Belt.

The study showed that JWST was able to pic up the greenhouses gases as easily as it would identifying Earth's ozone.

And the system revealed that JWST detected the gasses with just five transits for high concentrations like 100 parts per million (ppm).

Another advantage of searching for the greenhouse proposed gases is that they are exceptionally long-lived and would persist in an Earth-like atmosphere for up to 50,000 years.

'They wouldn't need to be replenished too often for a hospitable climate to be maintained,' Schwieterman said.

Other members of the research team echoed Schwieterman's enthusiasm for the potential of finding signs of intelligent life, but also for how much closer current technology has brought us to that goal.

Daniel Angerhausen at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said: 'Our thought experiment shows how powerful our next-generation telescopes will be.

'We are the first generation in history that has the technology to systematically look for life and intelligence in our galactic neighborhood.'

Ukraine will not receive an invitation to join NATO at the bloc’s summit next month, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron has said.He added that Kiev can only expect a strong declaration of support regarding its conflict with Moscow.

In a phone call with Russian prankster duo Vovan and Lexus– one of whom posed as former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko – which was made public on Wednesday, Cameron confirmed that Ukraine should not hope to make strides on its path to become a NATO member when the military bloc’s leaders convene in Washington July 9-11.

In 2022, after the conflict with Russia escalated and four of its former regions voted to join the neighboring country, Ukraine formally applied to join the bloc.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that Ukraine will not be able to join the bloc while it is embroiled in the conflict, amid widespread concerns that the move could trigger a direct clash with Russia.

Moscow has for years sounded the alarm about NATO’s expansion towards its borders, with President Vladimir Putin citing Ukraine’s aspirations to join the bloc as one of the main reasons for the conflict. Earlier this month, Putin said Russia is ready to begin peace talks with Ukraine once it withdraws from its four former regions and commits to neutrality. Yen falls to 37-year low of 160 against U.S. dollar

The Japanese yen fell below 160 against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, its lowest point in more than 37 years as Tokyo scrambled to determine what appropriate intervention measures to take. The record fall of the yen follows Japanese and South Korean national forecasters expressing alarm on Tuesday after the depreciation of their currencies. The United States had placed Japan on its watch list of currency manipulators last week.

The yen fell to 160.39 during London trading hours at one period, its lowest point since 1986. On April 29, the yen fell to 160.24 against the U.S. dollar, leading to intervention by Japan's central bank.

"I have a serious concern about the recent rapid weakening of the yen and we are closely monitoring market trends with a high sense of urgency," Masato Kanda, Japan's vice finance minister, said on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. "We will take necessary actions against any excessive movements."

The Japanese government already spent $61.3 billion intervening in it currency markets from April 26 through May 29, selling treasuries to fund the intervention. The Bank of Japan increased interest rates for the first time in 17 years in March in hopes it would strengthen the yen but the currency continued to struggle.

The polls suggest that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak may be on track to lead his Conservative Party to its worst election defeat in its nearly 200-year history.

And to compound that possible embarrassment, when the results are read out in his own district on the night of July 4, he’ll be standing alongside a candidate who describes himself as an intergalactic space lord and leader of the Recyclons from Planet Sigma.

Count Binface, a recurring satirical character in British elections, is challenging the prime minister for the Parliament seat representing Richmond and Northallerton.

Most polls suggest that Sunak will retain his seat, as every prime minister has before him. But his national approval rating is so low that an Ipsos survey released Saturday found that Sunak was only four percentage points ahead of Binface on favorability.

Binface, in turn, was viewed more favorably than former prime minister Liz Truss.

This is a candidate whose big policy ideas include banning loud snacks in theaters, building “at least one affordable house” and, in a kind of reverse Brexit, inviting other European nations to join the United Kingdom. He also wants to represent the U.K. at Eurovision.

The main party leaders in British elections, unsurprisingly, focus on the British press; getting one-on-one interviews with the leaders is a challenge for foreign correspondents.

But Count Binface — played by 44-year-old comedian Jon Harvey — responded quickly to our interview request. And he had much to say about “Bindependence Day,” which is what he is calling the July 4 snap elections.

When pressed on his loud-snacks policy, Binface said, “What’s the point of going out and spending half your mortgage and you can’t hear anything because of the noisy snack brigade? It’s madness.”

Harvey’s first outing as a satirical candidate in a British election was in 2017. Candidates who meet age and citizenship requirements have to pay 500 pounds ($634) and submit 10 signatures from voters in the constituency they plan to contest.

So Harvey declared himself a challenger to Prime Minister Theresa May, and he assumed the role of Lord Buckethead, a character inspired by a Star Wars spoof movie who has taken part in U.K. general elections going back to 1987.

But Harvey ran into “an issue on Planet Copyright” — American filmmaker and Buckethead creator Todd Durham threatened to sue him.

“So I respawned into my true form, Count Binface.” In 2019, he ran against Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as someone else officially authorized to pose as Buckethead.

When we asked if we could speak to Harvey, straight-faced Binface countered with a warning: “Your belief in the character is starting to fall away. … If that happens, this humor will disintegrate faster than a laser blast.”

Who actually votes for a character like this? In the recent London mayoral election, Binface — running on a pledge to put a price cap on croissants — won more than 24,000 votes.

Perhaps that’s not surprising in a country that voted for “Boaty McBoatface” when asked to name a $288 million research ship, or where a census question on religious identity once got nearly 400,000 people answering that they were Jedi knights from Star Wars.

But in this particular moment, there is a genuine dissatisfaction with politics, as well as anger driven by government scandals, the fallout of Brexit, cost-of-living pressures, political turmoil and stretched public services.

A recent British Social Attitudes survey found that public trust and confidence in politics is at an all-time low.

“If you don’t know what you’re going to do, and you go into the polling booth and you see ‘Lord Buckethead’ or ‘Count Binface,’ you might think, I’ll send a message by voting for him,” said Martin Baxter, founder of Electoral Calculus, a political consulting firm.

Baxter said satirical candidates have occasionally had political significance — as when the Monster Raving Loony Party, which encourages people to “vote for insanity,” outperformed what remained of the Social Democratic Party in a special election, underscoring that that party’s days were over.

Asked what he would consider a good result on July 4, Count Binface said, “I don’t want to get dewy-eyed, or dewy-visored. If I get any votes, that’s fine. If I get zero votes, that’s fine. Ultimately, it’s the being there that counts.

This will be a capping moment for 14 Earth Years of some of the worst government leadership any major country has ever suffered.”

Multiple injuries after Russian passenger train derailment

The incident took place in the northern Republic of Komi

At least 70 people have been injured after nine cars from a passenger train went off the tracks in Komi Republic, Russian Railways said on Thursday. There have been no confirmed deaths so far.

Train 511 was carrying passengers between Vorkuta in northeastern Komi above the Artic circle, and the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, some 5,000 kilometers away.

The derailment happened around 6:12pm Moscow time, near the town of Inta, according to the railway authorities.

“Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene. Measures are being taken to assist passengers,” Russian Railways said on Telegram. “Information about the victims is being clarified. Traffic on the section has been suspended.”

Train 511 included a total of 14 carriages with 232 passengers on board, the railway operator said. According to Russian Railways, the cause of the derailment may have been recent heavy rainfall.

Russian Railways has set up a task force headed by General Director Oleg Belozerov to look into the derailment. Two recovery trains have been sent to the location.

The office of the North-Western Transport Prosecutor has launched a criminal investigation into the derailment. Meanwhile, the head of the Republic of Komi, Vladimir Uyba, has reportedly flown to the site of the incident.

A uranium mine has dumped nine million gallons of toxic water out of the shaft near Arizona's Grand Canyon since opening last year, a new study has revealed.

Pinyon Plain Mine, located 10 miles from the park, claimed its project would not contaminate the pristine landscape when it began operations in December 2023.

But a new investigation revealed Monday found high levels of uranium, arsenic and lead in an evaporation pond at the site that feeds into others - potentially contaminating local drinking water used by thousands.

Grand Canyon Trust, a non-profit dedicated to safeguarding the park, discovered lead levels were 812 times the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limit, arsenic levels were 243 times the limit and uranium levels were six times the limit.

The chemicals in the evaporation pond could potentially seep into the ground water that feeds into the park's aquifer springs, the Grand Canyon Trust claimed.

However, Pinyon Plain Mine has pumped 66 million gallons of toxic water the pond since 2016.

House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk intends to file an amicus brief Wednesday with the Supreme Court and also file a resolution in the House that would invalidate the Jan. 6 Select Committee’s report against former White House Chief Strategist Bannon, the Daily Caller has first learned.

Loudermilk states that House rules required the Jan. 6 Select Committee to consult with the “Ranking Member of the Minority” to take a deposition, which was not possible as there was no Republican Ranking Member on the Select Committee. The Jan. 6 Select Committee held Bannon in contempt for “failing to appear for a deposition” which the Select Committee could not conduct because there was no ranking member to notify, Loudermilk’s office told the Caller.
