Share your experiences with this awesome community. How did you become interested in programming? Why did you decide to learn programming? Where has this knowledge brought you in life?

I started wanting to mod Minecraft, but I couldn't make any sense of it beyond adding new craftable decorative blocks. Not too long after I somehow ended up learning Javascript, and started making browser games and tools for myself. X years later I was growing tired of Javascript and the limitations of browser applications, so I started learning C, which I use the most now. Technically my first experience with development was using one of those point and click game maker programs and making shitty games with it when I was way too young, but that doesn't count as programming.

I haven't really made anything significant enough to mention but I make websites in my job and write all the javascript (and html/css of course) for them myself.

I found a map editor in the game files of UT2004 and later found a code editor inside, which I learned how to use out of interest. UnrealScript is not a good language, but because many things were open-coded, it exposed me to a lot of data structures. Having graphical feedback in a game you love is also very helpful.

In school I then learned Java, taught myself C and read some SICP and tried to make some simple games. Java was awful and at some point I learned enough about C to absolutely despise it. The unix hater on /tech/ may be annoying, but he is right about almost everything. I finally went to Common Lisp and Ada because almost every time I was thinking about a cool "new and revolutionary" feature, it turned out that one of these two had it.

Nowadays I mostly write things to make my life easier or patch shitty software I'm annoyed with. Where has programming brought me in life? I'm not really sure. Understanding the ways in which everything is horribly broken is very depressing, but at least I have a fallback profession if other things in life don't work out. Indirectly, programming brought me back to mathematics because I decided on a whim to study that for cryptography and type theory, which is far more benefit than it has ever brought me directly. I can't say if I recommend learning it.

My dad worked with computers and as a faggy 12 year old i learned python 2. I got bored of it eventually and realised that you could get free c++ compilers. downloaded g++ and did that for a bit. Then I learned java because my dad told me that's how i get a job. I did it for a bit, didn't like it either because everyone else didn't or because of the no freedom. I learnt haskell after that because everyone said it was all the rage.

I started out in 3rd grade when my maths teacher taught HTML in class. It was pretty cool so I asked if I could stay after school and learn some more. After I learned the basics from that markup language I moved to python which I absolutely loved. In high school I got around to learning C and R, both out of interest but R was more for an internship I had lined up in the summer. Now I am off to college and I'll be taking a Fortran programming course

What's the matter? I was born in 2002. The website was index.php and some shit no one wants to see.

I liked math but I thought computers were gay, etc...

Then I started learning about Discrete Mathematics. If you know what it is, then you know how it's the link between mathematics and computing and I didn't stop.

I was contacted by some dude that had the idea of creating a social media. I made it for him because I wanted to know how to code. I never took any money for it whatsoever, and I own none of it. Tavr.me is the final product. I don't work on it anymore because the owner and I had some disagreements.
