I will never forget a day in the late 2000's. I used to think of 4chan as a "fun," "edgy" place. "Rebellious." "Barrier-breaking."
One day I logged in and saw a spate of posts about some sort of effort to post messages on a particular comments section and peoples' general ecstatic laughter at doing so. I was confused and curious and decided to see what all the fuss was about. It turned out they were raiding the family website of a couple with a disabled daughter, filling the comments section with an overwhelming flood of hate to punish this couple for having this disabled and facially disfigured child instead of getting an abortion (which thee had not done for religious reasons.) This was before 4chan figured out it was conservative, mind– back then it only knew it was nihilistic and very, very bitter. "Kill it with fire," the comments read. "How could you bring this monster into the world. Disgusting."
I realized with a momentary cavitation bubble in my heart that internet culture was none of the things I thought it was. "Edgy, rebellious, barrier-breaking, irreverent." It was evil. My generation had simply reinvented, or rediscovered, pure and real evil. The consequences of this would be bigger and take longer to play out than any of us was prepared to imagine then. The internet is an inhibiting substitute for social fabric in a human society as lead is for calcium in a neural synapse, and the result is a surge in pure unmitigated evil. I still have no idea how or whether we're going to get out of this.

Yeah the good old days. See the thing is, anonymous used to be an amalgam of different views, bound by humor and free speech absolutism in a world that didn't matter. There was a great divide that began around HB Gary/ Occupy and concluded with Gamergate. The lefties, who were the most vicious of the troll posters, left and started their own thing elsewhere. They still use the same tactics today that they used back then. The harassment, doxxing to get people fired, the endless hate for anyone outside of what they have been told is "cool". They were largely drawn to the chans for the high profile hacktivism, and not the culture. When the hackers all got popped, they left because it wasn't cool anymore. They were followers then and they are followers now.
