Picked up the new 900 on Friday and immediately drove it almost 200 miles over the weekend. It performs perfectly. The only issue is the exhaust is quiet as fuck - it sounds like a stock Corolla… All I can hear is intake… I'll fix that come fall and a real job.

2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder. 200k+ miles on the body, ~115k miles on the engine (and tranny, I think)

In order of when I did it: changed fluids, replaced parking brake cables, pieced back together the right side mirror with bondo after it snapped off in an accident (should have used fiberglass in retrospect), put on new Yokohama S Drive tires, had a mechanic replace a faulty overfill valve that was causing vapor leaks (because I could not for the life of me find the leak on my own without a smoke machine), paint over the bondo on the side mirror and some cracked parts of the rear bumper with some cheap plastidip knockoff (temporary as I plan to replace the painted over parts eventually, although cosmetics are low on my priority list)

Manga bomb my rear panel over the engine with the Alice in Wonderland manga, because the paint/clearcoat are coming off fast and also to piss off purists. Eventually I need to get around to removing the pre-cats because I honestly don't know if they're still in there or not. More expensive plans for the future include to swap the stock tranny for a 6 speed with LSD and to add on a small turbo (with the necessary supporting mods like an aftermarket clutch and better brakes, of course). Not sure if I want to bother with coilovers or bracing as its a street car/daily driver and I like the way it handles as is, but I'll know for sure after I take it autoXing. Want to get better at stick shifting before I get a short shifter. If I manage to do all of that and still have money to blow on it, I'll take care of the dents and get the paint professionally redone.

Alternatively, sell it/trade it in for either a 350z or a BMW E34+reliable DD once I finish trade school in a couple years and start making better money. I do want to keep my MR2 for basically forever if I can reasonably get away with it, though.

I think 2ZZ (Celica GTS engine) swaps are fairly common for the ZZW30. It would likely be more expensive and definitely more complicated, but you might consider it if you want to get more power while maintaining NA characteristics. Weight increase would potentially be smaller as well.

I have considered it but decided against it for a few reasons

>talked to a guy who said fixing/finding replacement parts for the 1zz is easier than it is for the 2zz

Also, for less money I will be getting significantly more power gains from a turbo than I will with a 2zz. A 2zz swap will only give me about 50-60hp increase while a turbo running small amounts of boost can easily add 100+ horsepower on the 1zz. Besides, even if I wanted NA characteristics, a K20/K24 swap costs less and gives you more power. Only reason to go 2ZZ is if you're after stupid high amounts of power (400+ horsepower) in my opinion.

Never been a "car-person" but I figure I ought to learn about all this, and hell it could be a nice hobby I suppose.

ZZW30 owner here. Nissan is actually my primary love as far as cars go but its fucking impossible to find a manual+rwd/awd sports car in my price range made by them (<$4000), at least since the 240sx got hit by the drift tax so hard. My only options for cheap to buy and maintain vehicles like that were essentially Camaros, Mustangs, Miatas or this. I still love my ZZW30 though (always wanted to own a mid-rear car) and I always said that if I was gonna get something other than Nissan it would be either a Toyota or a BMW.

Just got her last month, it's a 1983 Chevy Camaro Z28. Guy I bought it off of was the original owner, car was never winter driven (in Canada thats a big thing, because the road salt they put down in the winter to melt snow also causes car bodies to rot really fast). Guy swapped the stock 305 V8 with a 350 SBC bored out 0.020 (he included the original 305in the deal), and installed an Edelbrock Performer intake on it, a Holley DP 750 CFM carb and spacer on it, a Mallory Hei Performance distributor and coil, short pipe headers, and chrome valve covers on it, Got it at a good price ($3500 CAD, so like 3k USD), cause the posi rear end needed to be replaced. So far in the three weeks I've had the car, I've:

-Replaced the old weather beaten window weatherstripping

-Swapped out the old Auburn 3.73 rear end with a new Eaton TruTrac 3.73 posi, and swapped out all the old gears with a rebuild kit from USA Standard Gear

-replaced the old thermostat and housing with a new one, cause the old one was warped and wouldn't seal properly

-Replaced the rear sway bar bushings

-Did a flush and clean on the coolant system

-Installed new trunk shocks

-Replaced the stock radio/ speakers/antenna with modern stuff

-Installed a three-gauge cluster on it (Water temp, Oil pressure, and Amperage) and replaced the old broken sensors

-Replaced the rear calipers, because the old ones had broken boots on the brake cylinders

In the future, I'd like to find a better air filter for the carb, as the one that is on it now is just too small. Hood clearance is a huge issue for these models, so I've been looking at installing a Dual Plenum kit made by Spectre Performance to replace the stock air cleaner. Also, want to install a 32" aluminum 3-core rad to replace the stock 28" single core one to keep that big 350 cooler when driving at low speeds. In the distant future, I'll be having to look at rotors, pads, and suspension too, I want to get ceramic pads, drilled and slotted rotors, and coil-over suspension all around as money and time allow. I'm in the Canadian Army, so the only real place I have to work on the car is in the parking lot on base and at my parent's place on leave, but I have a little experience working on older cars so it shouldn't be a problem.

Clean as hell 1985 Mercury Cougar. All original seats, carpets, pretty much all interior, exterior paint and trim. But; the gas tank, fuel lines, fuel pump and gauge, vacuum lines, engine, brakes, and tires are brand new. In January second gear went out and I'm struggling to find a way to replace it without getting a brand new tranny.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rebuilding an auto can be done by the DIYer, just be aware that it's quite difficult. Can you provide more details as to what the problem is? Also, when was the last time you checked the trans fluid level?

Fun fact: The Cougar of that generation is based on Ford's Fox platform, same as the third-gen Mustang. If you have the I4 or V6 version, you could find an old 302 Windsor V8 and it would literally bolt right in.

Fluids are fine and it originally had the v8 302 LS engine but in 2016 I dropped a brand new 302 boss coyote engine into it. But in January I was out on a cruise, stopped at a stoplight and when it was my turn to go I noticed the rpms when straight to 8k but won't shift into second gear. I limped it back home and has been stuck ever since. I hope this is what you meant
