PRC— In late September 2025, all accounts of prominent Chinese video blogger Hu Chenfeng were banned by authorities and his videos were removed, leaving only some content circulated privately by fans. Hu was known for exposing the restrictions on citizens’ education and access to information under government rule, and his remarks were deemed sensitive by officials.
Chinese netizens have nicknamed China the “Post-Qing,” suggesting that the Chinese Communist Party inherited the Qing dynasty’s governance model. Critics argue that the CCP consolidated power by absorbing remnants of Manchukuo’s military forces and allying with defeated Japan, establishing a totalitarian rule over its citizens. Detractors also claim that the party manipulated history, controlled ideology, and, in its early years, emulated the Sassoon family by cultivating opium to influence society.
Hu Chenfeng is neither the first public figure to be banned for revealing government actions, nor will he be the last. In his videos, he openly discussed the difficulties and ignorance of citizens under the current system, encouraging viewers to pay attention to the outside world and learn from countries such as the United States, with its democratic system and civil liberties.
The Chinese government has not issued any public comment on Hu’s ban. Critics say the incident highlights the severe restrictions on information access and freedom of speech in China, while also reminding the international community to continue monitoring the state of Chinese civil society.
