A vocational school in Hunan province has come under fire after students claimed their dormitory was converted from a public restroom. Videos posted online show dimly lit rooms with rows of bunk beds, damp concrete floors, and half-open squat toilets at the far end, raising public concern over student welfare.
The incident took place at Yongzhou Industrial and Trade Secondary Vocational School. One student alleged his dormitory, located in the basement beneath the school canteen, was once a communal lavatory. He described the stench in summer as “unbearable.”
In the footage, a peeling green wooden door opens into a room lined with more than 20 bunk beds. The video ends with shots of dirty squat toilets separated by crumbling tile partitions.
The school denied that the dormitory had been converted from a public toilet. However, the local education bureau acknowledged that the half-open toilet design violated regulations and ordered the school to make immediate improvements.

The controversy has fueled broader discussions on social media about conditions in China’s vocational schools, which often serve students from working-class families and receive less funding than top-tier institutions. Many netizens questioned how such facilities could have passed inspection in the first place.
