I honestly believe that classical music is overrated. In general I prefer traditional art to modern art, but music is the one exception to this rule. Classical music is great to have as background noise and it rarely sounds bad, but it just doesn't convey the same intensity of feeling as some of the bands I listen to.

Oh I put that on once in khantube during /classical/ friday.
I don't think sonically it goes together well. There's a reason why most of the time it's either didge solo orchestra solo. But I think one might be able to manipulate the shape of the didge to have its natural harmonics fit the orchestral pitch better.
Because didge is irregularly shaped, it doesn't have nicely spaced harmonics. Well neither do brass instruments in general but they generally just have the ground harmonic out of tune (which is rarely used anyway because it's excessively hard to hit it right), with the rest being conveniently tuned for playing. A perfectly cylindrical pipe produces odd harmonics (1:3:5:etc) while a perfectly conical pipe produces natural harmonics (1:2:3:etc).
Now your average didge is quite wide along whole pipe but it's slightly narrower at the beginning, and the first harmonic is usually at an 11th or a full tone short of first odd harmonic. In order to preserve it's peculiar acoustic properties it might be an interesting idea to try push that 11th a further semitone down, to hit the natural 10th, or 2:5 ratio. One would need to carefully design the internal shape but it might be possible to get harmonic series of 2:5:8:11:etc, with steps by 3. Tuning the didge to, say, key of C, would produce notes: c:e':c, and then a half-sharp f (a natural 11th; similar to how the natural 7th you can hit on brass instruments is slightly lower than a minor 7th), then a flatter b'' flat (the 14th exactly the same as the natural 7th on brass instruments compared to the fundamental being 2), then 17th being a quarter tone higher than c, a 20th or e, and so on and so on.
As you can see, besides the weird timbres, the natural notes produced are C and E, an interval that can be matched to orchestral timbre.

It might be reasonable to have different didges tuned to different degrees; having a tonic, subdominant, and a dominant one, for example, might be a good choice, but of course this also depends on the scale the piece is written in, and usage of different chords throughout the piece.

Yeah I can agree that Baroque does lack in variety Romantic has to offer. However, I'd say that the overall standard was higher in Baroque. But I'd also say Romantic was a general raise in quality from Classical; which isn't really surprising as Romantic was started by Beethoven who studied Bach and other Baroque authors a lot, to the point where his late pieces relied on fugaic counterpointal development, albeit in early Romantic style.
What happened in Romantic period though, composers started relying too much on euphonic sounds of the instruments and the orchestra and ignored the pure structural beauty. Midicore renditions of Baroque pieces are remarkably impressive; midicore renditions of Romantic pieces tend to sound silly.

Wow you sound like a string player. Personally I think the most important thing is instrumental color. Over structure and rhythm and whatever. The fact that Romantic music can't be played midicore is a testament to its quality if anything. You need a real orchestra to make it work, they are using their tools to the limits. Thats why I love Schosty so much, he really knew how to express with color instruments.

Nah, pianist.
I guess I personally like Baroque exactly for this reason because the development of """""classical"""" music recently took a super weird turn where composers write utter trash, but it still sounds ok because of the euphonicity of instruments available. Perhaps we should adifferentiate between good music and good pieces, exactly for this reason. If a piece is good, it's gonna be damn good even if it's amateurs playing it and as long as they don't trip over notes too much, it's fine. Meanwhile, good music requires quality during performance itself.
Another thing is, having musical pieces already rely on performance techniques to colour it up, this also takes away the power of the performer. Baroque music, when performed, relied a lot on that; ornamentation and accentuation colouring were all up to the musician. Meanwhile, the current state of classical music is composer-worship. He tells you how to play that note, he tells you what ornaments to play, and you're rarely allowed to innovate. The performer is no longer an interprete, but merely a tool in the composer's hands. Therefore, I would claim, properly performed Baroque piece should also include the musical quality that Romantic period music offers in sheet score, but unlike Romantic period, that's not written down and it's down to the soloist/group/conductor to use where needed.

Take a step back and read what you just wrote. That makes no sense. Textural music isn't inherently inferior to other music, if it sounds good it is good, counterpoint and co. are just tools and not the goal. Apples to oranges.
>composers
I don't mind it when the performers interpret it the way they want to, but I usually want to hear it more or less how the composer intended it to sound for a variety of reasons.

Take a step back and do what you're telling me to do.
If you read closely, you can see that I am saying that it's not inherently worse as music because of that. Instead I'm saying that it's worse as pieces. A musical piece, I would argue, has quality that doesn't depend on by whom and how it is performed. Baroque pieces do have that, more often than do Romantic pieces.

>In general I prefer traditional art to modern art, but music is the one exception to this rule.
so you prefer modern/avant-garde music? you sound like a complete ignoramus by implying that what you refer to as "classical music" is a thing of the past.
>it just doesn't convey the same intensity of feeling
you don't know what to listen to in music. serious art music is generally more evocative, because serious composers simply know more about music and have a broader language available to them to communicate sensations.
what share of the music you listen to is music-centered (like classical) as opposed to lyrics with a musical background?
chances you are getting the emotion from lyrics, not music.
i challenge you to listen to karaoke versions of whatever genre you like, then compare the music and the emotion vis-a-vis to classical. as much as i like some popular and folk genres, classical and jazz win by far.
there's a reason why you don't find much pop used on dramatic movies.

Second one is Violin Sonata No.9. (Op. 47, written in 1803 for my nigga George Bridgetower; but when the two went drinking after the performance apparently the negro gentleman called a fair maid Beethoven fancied a hoe which led to Beethoven losing his cool and re-dedicating the piece to Rodolphe Kreutzer, which is why it's today known as the Kreutzer sonata. Kreutzer, however, didn't like the work, as he considered it grotesque, barbaric and utterly unintelligible – as did many of the critics – well, Kreutzer didn't like Beethoven's work in general.) Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Turkish pianist Fazıl Say I'd say do a great job making the sonata sound like a mess, exactly the way I think it should sound like, with pomp and bravado, definitely not subdued in any way.

Most scholars consider classical music to be music created in the western European musical tradition established during the classical or common-practice periods depending on who you ask. It's a very broad category that some broaden even more to include early medieval music from 500 AD onward.
There's also "classical" being a nicer way of saying "old". There's classical Indian music, classical Japanese music, classical Native American music. That's just saying "music created before some specific cutoff year".
As an apology for replying to such an old post here's some Chopin.

No, classical does not and has never meant "old", though often classical things are old. Classical comes from the Latin ``classicus`` which means "belonging to a class/rank" and by extension was used to mean "belonging to the [highest] rank". That is what is meant by the word "classical" when used in its broadest sense.

You can dislike certain, "sub-genres", and instruments(i'm personally not a big fan of the violin), but writing off something that genius and sublimely created as bad because it doesn't fit your modern sensibilities? You didn't even criticize it. You need to know something about a thing to criticize it.

Not all Baroque pieces are equal, or even good, but to disregard that era? Kill yourself. I'm not joking; the world would be better without you.

Of course you can: it's utter tripe composed to backlight scenes from a modern film. It displays nothing, and only exists to pull sentimental strings in the audience's collective head. This trend of shitty movie scoring can be tracked back to the silent era. Seeing as how music was integral to silent films, one might assume an extended silent period would have deeply improved the skill of the original film composers, allowing them to pass it on to their pupils in the colleges during or before the switch.

What do you guys think of Renaissance Fair Rock music? I fucking hate it. It has put a cloud over historical, authentic and secular medieval-rennaissance music, and has caused this group of historical revisionists to come into being. They think that all of the secular music in the medieval and renaissance periods was fast, loud, and rife with blaring bagpipes and ear-shattering drums, accompanied by shouted lyrics about gambling, drinking, whores, or the crusades. Basically, they think heavy metal music has a historical predecessor before hard rock music. They're somehow further from the truth than the people who think that all music from those periods were religious works or those people that think the villeins, serfs, vagabonds and peasants didn't have access to music, let alone things such as theatre.

They could at least try to be authentic though. No one wants to hear In Taberna over and over again, and Hungarian folk dances were most assuredly not loud, obnoxious affairs. I could forgive the overuse of the bagpipe if they didn't fucking abuse it by playing it so god damn loud all the time. Fucking hell, why did Corvus Corax have to get so popular? German fucks.

That view is too pessimistic in my opinion. Good movies and good soundtracks are still coming out every year. In terms of technology, we're further ahead than ever before. It's easy to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses. I think we're just close to the end of another cycle. It happened before and will happen again because people are always the same.

Our technology makes us dumber and lazier. Each new convenience creates an expectation which is a stress. We work more for less money and are generally sadder than we were 50 years ago, despite women entering the workplace and the progress of technology.. People kill themselves at higher rates than ever recorded before. Everyone is oversexed even if they're undersexed. Bastards multiply in the wombs of unwed mothers. Nearly everyone is smoking weed or doing painkillers or getting drop-dead drunk or on long-term medication, because normal non-retarded consciousness balks at this reality. Women think they're men. Men think they're women. This is not considered a mental disorder. The school system is useless shit pumping out imbeciles who are rubber-stamped through college as long as they tow the political line or are properly pigmented. Barbarian hordes are settling Europe and raping the women without punishment while the traitorous leaders flagellate themselves with their own severed cocks while sipping tea made from the blood of their own beheaded constituents. Niggers who can't use maps or recognize themselves in mirrors are held up as the standard of coolness. So many sheep slaughtered at the altar of genetic equality. Fine art has been reduced to a money-laundering scheme. A modern conversation is like this:
"OOga deadpool reference avengers reference wowimsuchanerd ooga more terrible drivel SARCASTIC REMARK ooga."
"Your house is burning. You should get out!"
"Ooga hulk iron SITCOM MACRO man bruno mars trump ooga shitty rapper fortnite oogaAARRGGHHGAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!" Nihilism reigns.
It's not just nostalgia goggles. It's real and measurable. The post-world war II experiment in egalitarianism has failed and will be replaced. 30 years at most. This process will be very painful for all.

You're being a tad melodramatic. Technology is an amazing way for people to have access to more information from around the planet. People now know hundreds of times more things than people from hundreds of years ago. Maybe you live in a bad area or just spend too much time listening to talking heads yammering on about politics. I can listen to whatever piece of music I want, whenever I want, for nothing. How is that not amazing?
>weed
Drugs and that kind of stuff are still not something the majority do. People, including academics have been doing drugs since forever. Right now weed is just a trend people will grow out of when they realize how potentially destructive it can be to a brain that hasn't fully matured. Transgenderism may be a, "hot button issue", but they're still a tiny minority. Most of them try suicide at some point. People will realize that they should be treated like any other mental patient sooner or later. The school system could use improvement, but again, the average person knows a lot more than they did before. Whatever is happening in Europe probably wont go on forever. Nigger culture is just a fad, people will get over it pretty soon. Also it has been considered cool to an extent at least since the 1920s.

>People now know hundreds of times more things than people from hundreds of years ago.
Sure people know more. They know more about Captain America, Westeros, and PubG than ever before. Those who aren't diverted into pointless avenues often don't or can't dig deep enough to get past the crust of disinformation that feeds into the corrupt zeitgeist that is consuming our culture. They become perpetuators of the delusion. What does this access to knowledge matter when it's mostly junk info and sexy, feel-good junk info at that? The confusable become lost in the manure pile, the truthseekers shovel shit for the occasional diamond, and the wise are nowhere to be found.
>Trannies
My lament is that dogma implies that these people are not mentally disordered. I know they are less than 1% of the population. Also, women are encouraged to be so masculine these days. This is unhealthy for everyone and they are unhappier than ever before.
>Nigger culture just a fad
I hope it doesn't last much longer.
>See? Even you agree that things will be changed for the better eventually.

Start simple, choose random pieces of well known composers and just listen to them. Then you decide whether you liked it or not and what you liked and disliked in particular. It's like judging food, everyone can do it. You can compare other interpretations by other conductors and orchestras of works you liked and read some bits about the composer and what the piece is about. You build your knowledge about classical music gradually and the point is to enjoy it.

I don’t listen to much classical but I’d like to start. I stumbled upon this piece of music and I’m enthralled by it and want to find more like it, what sort of classical is it? What is a requiem?

There's a lot of good instrumental music being made for anime, but it's hard to get people to even consider it. It's either no good because it wasn't made before the 20th century by important establishment-approved people, or because soundtrack music can't be real music, or because anything associated with anime has to be bad.

I liked Holst's "The Planets", Jupiter's act along with mercury was the most recognizable ones for me. Anywhere I could go from this?
