IN CASE 8CHAN IS DOWN: http://txti.es/monarchy FOR NEWS ABOUT WHERE TO REGROUP

 No.1077

Should monarchs maintain or put themselves more into a religious role?

Historically, the Emperor of Japan being linked with Shintoism.

The reigning monarch of England still maintains heavy connections with the Anglican church.

The Grand Duke of Luxembourg renounced some of his functions for essentially religious beliefs regarding euthanasia.

Is the separation of church and state anathema to monarchism?

I believe he has to sign every law in Luxembourg for it to become 'law' and since in this case it went against his religion (since it passed in parliament) he asked for it to go through without his approval.

The monarch should be pious, but also separated from the Church. He should have a humble attitude towards his religion, so that the Church as a moral authority can check on him if he acts in the manner of a tyrant.

>Is the separation of church and state anathema to monarchism?

Yes. The "Chosen by God" idea is a fairly integral one, since most people are incapable of accepting a higher authority simply for practical concerns in the long run.

I also believe that the monarch needs to be above any priest though. Otherwise, it is not the monarchs who rule, but the priests.

I've always preferred the analogy of the State being the father of the nation and the Church being the mother. The Church should not hold power over the Monarch of course, but the Monarch should be a devout follower of tradition.

When a monrach defies century-old tradition, the door is opened for dissent. The best example of this is Henry VIII and the Church of England splitting off from the Roman Catholic Church. Henry VIII hated Protestantism and despised Luther as a heretic, but various political twists and turns (nameably Charles V's control of Rome preventing Henry VIII annulment with Charles V's aunt Catherine of Aragon) led Henry VIII down the foolish path of breaking from the Church. This opened the door for the Protestantism he hated. Puritanism reared its head in England and began its holy crusade against Monarchy. The first instance of a king being killer by his own people (Charles I of England) came about due to this chain of events (let it be noted that this was also in large part the fault of the foolishness of England to create and keep Parliament who held the power to tax even though the King did not).

I've never heard this analogy before…so does that mean the U.S. is a polygamous bastard?

>foolishness of England to create and keep Parliament

About the only decent function of the Parliament was to make sure that succession wars didn't get too crazy.

Nope.

Was the Thirty Years War the beginning of the end for Western Civilization?

Not quite. The French Revolution was. After the Thirty Years War, it was still possible to turn the ship around and create a free and pious society, but with the invention of the ideals of equality and public government, this stopped. We've been fighting the resulting totalitarian tendencies ever since, with less than stellar success.

Trying to. Of course, it isn't easy. I'm trying to get into habits that other people get trained with since childhood, and honestly, the city environment isn't good for me.

The fact that the Anglican Church is no longer even in communion with Rome says enough. The Church is above the monarch, and I believe that those who defend the church from monarchs who would change it to their own tastes should be protected by the church for it.
