The Trump campaign issued a short statement Sunday afternoon saying Trump was safe after gun shots were fired in his vicinity. The statement did not disclose Trump’s location. (Statement by the Secret Service added to end of article)

Reports are coming with the usual caveat that initial reports are sometimes wrong or incomplete.

Update: The New York Post reports shots were fired near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, and that Trump was not a target (excerpt):

The Secret Service is responding to a shooting near Donald Trump as he left his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to law enforcement sources.

…Two people exchanged gunfire outside of Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach. The shooters were targeting each other, and the gunfire was not targeting Trump, the sources said.

Natalie Winters with Steve Bannon’s War Room reports via X twitter a much more serious incident: “Shots were just fired at Trump international golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump was there golfing. An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes and the suspect fled over a nearby wall, per a source in Florida law enforcement….Per my source, the suspect has been arrested in Martin County. White male.”

CNN’s John Miller reported on air Secret Service agents returned fire and that President Trump is thought to be the target of the gunshots fired at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida Sunday afternoon. A semi-automatic rifle, a backpack and Go-Pro camera were reported found.

Brian Stelter posted CNN video clips: Breaking from @KristenhCNN and @JohnMillerCNN: “Officials believe the shots fired at Trump International Golf Club were intended for former President Donald Trump, according to sources familiar on the matter.””

“Miller: “The Secret Service identified the direction” of the shots “and returned fire at that gunman, who fled. Witnesses were able to provide a description of an individual and a vehicle. We are told that a vehicle that is close to that description has been stopped” by police.”

He’s in custody & his black vehicle is impounded “He crossed into the wrong county. My guys were waiting for him. They had the BOLO from PBSO.,” Martin Sheriff Will Snyder tells me He said he has no other info he can disclose and they’re awaiting FBI & Secret Service to take the suspect into custody & search the vehicle.”

FBI says it's probing 'attempted assassination' on Trump after gunman 'armed with assault rifle' was shot at by Secret Service on his golf course

The FBI now says two hours after the incident that the attack 'appears to be an attempted assassination of former President Trump.'

The armed suspect was posted up outside the club around the 5th and 6th hole, which a source familiar with the incident told DailyMail.com is a 'vulnerable' area of the course.

Multiple police sources have confirmed to media that a 'high powered rifle' was recovered at the scene and that he was pointing the weapon towards the golf course on Sunday afternoon before shots were fired at 2:00 p.m. The suspect's car is also in police possession.

The area where the suspect was first spotted by his security detail was two holes ahead of where Trump was golfing at the time of gunshots, causing the individual to flee.
