A book lovers’ conference in Colorado is being ripped on social media after the event descended into a disappointing catastrophe that some dubbed “the Fyre Festival of books” — and that even left one bibliophile with a black eye.

Last month’s Readers Take Denver event was billed as a four-day reader’s paradise, filled with popular authors, signed copies of books and a community of like-minded bookworms.

Instead, the conference was spoiled by hours-long lines, a lack of security, missing pre-ordered books, according to published reports and social media posts by attendees.

“All we did was stand in line. It was total BS,” self-described “RTD survivor” Kelli Meyer told The Denver Post, calling the event the “Fyre Festival of books.”

“It was worse than Disney, and there wasn’t even a ride at the end.”

The April 18-21 event was the second iteration of the conference created by organizer Lisa Renee Jones, an author who has penned more than 100 books, the Denver Post said.

She successfully put on a smaller version of the get-together in 2023, and allegedly overpromised and underdelivered her mission to put on a bigger and better conference in 2024, critics said.

The disaster was reportedly so bad that Readers Take Denver has already canceled its plans for a 2025 event.

But Renne Jones told The Post that the allegations were “slander” that was instigated by a best-selling author with a case of diva syndrome.

The event organizer claimed “Iron Flame author Rebecca Yarros used social media as a weapon after the two butted heads about how her portion of the event schedule would shake out.

“When it comes to the events of this weekend, many have been mistreated,” Yarros wrote on Facebook the day after the event ended.

Attendees shelled out between $300 and $375 to participate in the packed conference — which boasted meet-and-greets, panels, book signings and even movie screenings — under the impression they wouldn’t have to wait in lines, The Denver Post reported.

A timed ticketing system utilizing the WhatsApp messaging service was supposed to prevent waits to see favorite authors, meaning guests would visit as many booths as they wanted.

Renee Jones admitted that there was a myriad of issues with the venue, which caused lengthy registration lines, but claimed there was no other serious backups.

“I truly believe that had we had time to set up properly, had we had all the tables that we were supposed to have, that that would have gone much smoother,” Renee Jones said.

“Do I still think that we should have done electronic registration for this year? Yes … But I was nervous because we didn’t have time to fully develop an app. And I wanted it to be perfect because I didn’t want to have a bump. Everything I did, I tried to make it great.”

But some attendees claimed the event was more than frustrating — and came down to violence.

Another TikToker added that she was also verbally assaulted up by staff members while suffering a medical emergency at the conference.

“I was having a hypoglycemic moment and was screamed at by staff to ‘get the f–k up off the floor!” she alleged. “There were so many horrific experiences between readers, vendors, authors, PAs, volunteers alike. This was not just a breakdown in communication, it is a systemic issue with this program.”

Renee Jones acknowledged the reports of violence, which she called “bumpy bumps,” but emphasized the aggression was under control, according to an email obtained by The Denver Post.

“In the case that someone has claimed a volunteer put hands on someone, I got security involved IMMEDIATELY,” Renee Jones wrote.

She also seemingly dispelled rumors of the chaos by sharing that many people brought her to tears with their praise for the event.

“All subsequent charges for payment plans have thus been suspended, and your ticket has been cancelled,” RTD said on its website.

Stephen A. Smith responded to Jonathan Papelbon’s claim that he’s “racist” and “xenophobic” during a 12-minute segment on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” blasting the former MLB closer for lying and pushing back on the allegation that he was kicked out of the Phillies clubhouse.

“What do you mean I was thrown out of a Major League Baseball clubhouse,” Smith said.

“I have been a reporter and a sports commentator for 30 years. That has never happened in any sport. I’ve never been thrown out of a locker room. I’ve never been thrown out of a clubhouse. … That is a lie. Now, I could sue your ass for lying, telling such a lie like that. But I won’t. I won’t waste my time.”

The feud dated back to when Smith — earlier in the week on ESPN’s “First Take”— criticized Angels star Mike Trout following his torn meniscus, questioning why the outfielder always seemed to be hurt and why he “can’t stay healthy playing baseball.”

Papelbon then appeared on the “Foul Territory” show on Thursday, describing Smith as a “complete joke and really shady” and more “narcissistic than Donald Trump.”

Smith then mentioned his controversial comments about Trout and explained some of the numbers — his missed games, his contract that runs through 2030, his lack of a postseason win as a reason why he should be allowed to explore playing for another team — behind them, before directly addressing Papelbon one final time in the video.

“And because I mention that, you would go on the air, Papelbon, knowing nothing about me, and you would call me a racist,” Smith said.

“I’m a black man. We have a history of experiencing racism. And a lot of times, those experiences come courtesy of people who look like you. And I would never think to call you a racist. What you said is wrong, is irresponsible, is petty, and if it was to get a reaction, it’s desperate. In contrast, the 31-year-old graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School and the late President John F. Kennedy’s only grandson, repeatedly lavished praise on President Joe Biden.

Schlossberg ends his “Joshua” clip by complaining about RFK Jr.’s love of Bitcoin and turning abruptly to the camera and yelling, “who’s going to protect my MONEY?”

A number of RFK Jr.’s siblings have denounced his candidacy repeatedly.

Six of them appeared en masse at a Philadelphia rally for Biden in April, urging people to vote for the incumbent.

Not everyone was impressed with Schlossberg’s mimicry.

The armed student who was shot dead this week before he could charge into a Wisconsin middle school pointed his pellet gun at police, prosecutors said Saturday.

According to the state Department of Justice, the unnamed student was carrying a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle outside Mount Horeb Middle School Wednesday.

“Officers directed the subject to drop the weapon, but the subject did not comply,” the department said in a release.

“The subject pointed the weapon at the officers, after which law enforcement discharged their firearms, striking the subject. Lifesaving measures were deployed but the subject died on scene.”

No one else was injured. The Mount Horeb police officers who were involved were put on administrative leave as per agency policy.

Police rushed to the middle school around 11:15 a.m. after a 911 caller spotted a suspicious figure walking toward the building with a long gun, prosecutors said.

The would-be shooter never made it inside the school, but the terrifying incident sent the young students fleeing for their lives — including some who escaped on in-line skates.

Terrified parents said that their children hid in closets, scared to take out their phones to call or text.

One middle schooler, 12-year-old Max Kelly, said his class was in the school gym practicing in-line skating when they heard gunshots.

When his teacher told the class to get out of the school they skated to a street, ditched the skates and ran to a convenience store and gas station where they hid in a bathroom.

Mount Horeb, which is about 25 miles west of the state capital Madison, is home to around 7,600 people and the central office of outerwear retailer Duluth Trading Company.

For many Americans, the words “outside agitators” evoke memories of southern segregationists complaining about northern civil rights workers organizing black Americans.

But times and issues change and those same words now have a very different connotation.

This time they are used by police and northern mayors, some of them black, to refer to professional radicals who helped start the antisemitic, pro-Hamas riots plaguing colleges across the country.

Mayor Adams early on accused “outside agitators” of radicalizing students when unruly mobs formed on campuses within the five boroughs, including New York University, City College, Fordham and Columbia.

“Outside agitators were on their grounds, training and really co-opting this movement,” Adams said about Columbia.

Police statistics confirm the outsiders’ lopsided role.

In some cases, more than half of those taken into custody by the NYPD have no affiliation with the universities where they were wreaking havoc.

NYU, for example, said 68 of the 133 people arrested there one day last month weren’t students, faculty, or staff.

At City College, 102 of the 170 who were arrested last week had no affiliation with the college, police said.

Terrorist headbands

The Post identified one of the most violent leaders of the Columbia takeover as James Carlson, a former silver-spoon kid who is now a 40-year-old professional agitator who lives in a Brooklyn home valued at $3.4 million.

Described by police as a “longtime anarchist” with a rap sheet that goes back to 2005, Carlson has no affiliation with Columbia but was arrested inside Hamilton Hall on Tuesday night where protestors broke in and barricaded themselves behind piles of furniture.

Considered a possible leader of the group, he has been charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, conspiracy and criminal trespassing.

Many of the outside radicals come ready for battle with a “uniform” of masked faces and Arab kaffiyehs used as scarves and head coverings.

They also have a steady supply of Palestinian flags, one of which flew above City College until police took it down and raised Old Glory.

Green Hamas headbands and yellow Hezbollah flags also have been spotted, evidence that some of the hooligans are proud of their allegiance to groups designated by the United States as terrorist organizations.

The fact that many of the protesters’ tactics and the tents they’ve set up on campuses also are identical suggests there is a super structure guiding the turmoil.

The Wall Street Journal reports some activist groups have been training for the campus protests since soon after Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

It identified the National Students for Justice in Palestine, which has branches on more than 300 campuses, as a chief organizer, trainer and advocate for tent camps and the takeover of buildings.

It also reportedly helped guide the students’ agenda, which everywhere includes demands for colleges to end investments in companies doing business with Israel.

Given the many crimes charged in police crackdowns, as well as the antisemitic harassment and the embrace of terrorists, the evidence of an organized conspiracy should be fodder for the Department of Justice.

So far, however, the department has been silent and there is little chance Attorney General Merrick Garland will lift a finger if it might hurt President Biden’s chance of re-election.

Although Biden demanded that Garland prosecute Donald Trump, and Garland obeyed, the last thing the White House wants is a probe of terrorist wannabes.

Democratic base

Radical-left students and Muslim Americans are a key component of the Democrats’ coalition in swing states, and they are already unhappy with Biden.

A probe could guarantee he won’t get their votes.

The political math also explains much if not all of the administration’s pressure on Israel to agree to a permanent cease-fire with Hamas.

Until he realized the domestic downsides, Biden was a wholehearted supporter of Israel.

And so Garland has said nothing about the nationwide campus chaos and Biden never mentions antisemitism without also warning about Islamophobia, as if they are two equal sides of the same coin.

As the role of outsiders grows clear, the way most college presidents handled their campuses’ protests looks even worse than it did.

Nearly all these presidents were frightened into submission by a mouse that roared in the sense that relatively few students were actually involved.

It’s bad enough that the presidents tolerated takeovers of university properties, harassment of students and nonstop noise leading to canceled classes and threats to disrupt graduations.

Many school leaders also foolishly offered concessions during negotiations even though most protests included violations of rules and criminal laws.

Israel War Update

Get the most important developments in the region, globally and locally.

Some presidents essentially capitulated, with Brown agreeing to vote on the antisemitic divest demand.

Northwestern agreed to a quota system by setting aside five scholarships for Palestinian students each year and giving Muslim groups special spaces on campus for “community building.”

Columbia, the epicenter of the outbreak, is a textbook case of a weak leader allowing her campus to be held hostage for more than two weeks as she negotiated with ringleaders.

The Ivy League school’s president, Minouche Shafik, also twice called in the NYPD to arrest resisters who occupied university property and refused to leave.

The first time was on April 18, when New York’s Finest rousted people who set up a tent camp in the middle of the campus.

Police later said just 38 of those arrested were students, CNN reported.

During the second crackdown, 80 students were arrested, along with 32 outsiders, including James Carlson.

Combined, that means just 118 students were allegedly committing violations serious enough to be arrested in the two raids.

It’s a drop in the Columbia bucket.

Across its undergraduate and graduate programs, the university enrolls nearly 37,000 students.

Coddling troublemakers

Even if the scope is limited to the undergraduate programs at Columbia and Barnard colleges, the total number of enrolled students is about 10,000.

And just 118 of them were arrested.

Of course, more students than that participated in some demonstrations and no doubt others supported the demands or just their friends.

But the small number of hardcore disruptors illustrates how badly Shafik and Columbia’s board bungled the responses.

Had they firmly enforced existing policies against disturbances from the outset, they might have been able to stop the harassment and threats before they metastasized into full-fledged disasters.

By coddling the troublemakers, administrators encouraged them and turned them into campus leaders.

The result was a lost spring semester for serious students and more turbulence for the institution, which will suffer serious reputational damage.

Civil rights probes by Congress and the Department of Education, combined with class-action lawsuits over threats to Jewish students, promise expensive problems for years.

Alumni donations already are falling.

The pattern makes it hard to see any justification for Shafik remaining as president.

If she is forced out, she will join the former presidents of Harvard and Penn who were fired after their appeasing responses to antisemitism.

Shed no tears for any of them.

The five-second clip garnered 4.8 million views within hours of being posted — and racked up plenty of replies ridiculing the duo.

“A dementia patient and a homeless drunk,” comedian Tim Young taunted.

The video was shared just one day after Hamill, 72, made a surprise visit to the White House press room wearing a pair of aviator shades he said the president had gifted him.

He claimed he just ended a visit with Biden — presumably when they pair shot the awkward clip.

The actor has been an outspoken backer of both Biden and Israel amid widespread protests and riots on college campuses opposed to the president’s support for the Jewish state’s ongoing invasion of the Gaza Strip targeting the Hamas terror organization.

Hamill used his time at the White House presser to gush about Biden’s performance — as polls show the president with a dismal average approval rating of 40.1% as he seeks re-election in November, dragged down by what polls show is broad frustration over high inflation and illegal immigration.

OMAHA, Neb. — Warren Buffett cautioned the tens of thousands of shareholders who packed an arena for his annual meeting that artificial intelligence scams could become “the growth industry of all time.”

Doubling down on his cautionary words from last year, Buffett told the throngs he recently came face to face with the downside of AI. And it looked and sounded just like him.

Someone made a fake video of Buffett, apparently convincing enough that the so-called Oracle of Omaha himself said he could imagine it tricking him into sending money overseas.

The billionaire investing guru predicted scammers will seize on the technology, and may do more harm with it than society can wring good.

“As someone who doesn’t understand a damn thing about it, it has enormous potential for good and enormous potential for harm and I just don’t know how that plays out,” he said.

EARNINGS BEFORE MUSINGS

The day started early Saturday with Berkshire Hathaway announcing a steep drop in earnings as the paper value of its investments plummeted and it pared its Apple holdings.

The company reported a $12.7 billion profit, or $8.825 per Class A share, in first the quarter, down 64% from $35.5 billion, or $24,377 per A share a year ago.

But Buffett encourages investors to pay more attention to the conglomerate’s operating earnings from the companies it actually owns. Those jumped 39% to $11.222 billion, or $7,796.47 per Class A share, led by insurance companies’ performance.

None of it that got in the way of the fun.

Throngs flooded the arena to buy up Squishmallows of Buffett and former Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, who died last fall.

The event attracts investors from all over the world and is unlike any other company meeting. Those attending for the first time are driven by an urgency to get here while the 93-year-old Buffett is still alive.

“This is one of the best events in the world to learn about investing. To learn from the gods of the industry,” said Akshay Bhansali, who spent the better part of two days traveling from India to Omaha.

A NOTABLE ABSENCE

Devotees come from all over the world to vacuum up tidbits of wisdom from Buffett, who famously dubbed the meeting ‘Woodstock for Capitalists.’

But a key ingredient was missing this year: It was the first meeting since Munger died.

The meeting opened with a video tribute highlighting some of his best known quotes, including classic lines like “If people weren’t so often wrong, we wouldn’t be so rich.”

The video also featured skits the investors made with Hollywood stars over the years, including a “Desperate Housewives” spoof where one of the women introduced Munger as her boyfriend and another in which actress Jaimie Lee Curtis swooned over him.

As the video ended, the arena erupted in a prolonged standing ovation honoring Munger, whom Buffett called “the architect of Berkshire Hathaway.”

Buffett said Munger remained curious about the world up until the end of his life at 99, hosting dinner parties, meeting with people and holding regular Zoom calls.

“Like his hero Ben Franklin, Charlie wanted to understand everything,” Buffett said.

For decades, Munger and Buffett functioned as a classic comedy duo, with Buffett offering lengthy setups to Munger’s witty one-liners. He once referred to unproven internet companies as “turds.”

Together, the pair transformed Berkshire from a floundering textile mill into a massive conglomerate made up of a variety of interests, from insurance companies such as Geico to BNSF railroad to several major utilities and an assortment of other companies.

Munger often summed up the key Berkshire’s success as “trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent.” He and Buffett also were known for sticking to businesses they understood well.

“Warren always did at least 80% of the talking. But Charlie was a great foil,” said Stansberry Research analyst Whitney Tilson, who was looking forward to his 27th consecutive meeting.

NEXT GEN LEADERS

Munger’s absence, however, created space for shareholders to get to know better the two executives who directly oversee Berkshire’s companies: Ajit Jain, who manages the insurance units; and Abel, who handles everything else and has been named Buffett’s successor.

The two shared the main stage with Buffett this year.

The first time Buffett kicked a question to Abel, he mistakenly said “Charlie?” Abel shrugged off the mistake and dove into the challenges utilities face from the increased risk of wildfires and some regulators’ reluctance to let them collect a reasonable profit.

Morningstar analyst Greggory Warren said he believes Abel spoke up more Saturday and let shareholders see some of the brilliance Berkshire executives talk about.

“Greg’s a rock star,” said Chris Bloomstran, president of Semper Augustus Investments Group. “The bench is deep. He won’t have the same humor at the meeting. But I think we all come here to get a reminder every year to be rational.”

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Buffett has made clear that Abel will be Berkshire’s next CEO, but he said Saturday that he had changed his opinion on how the company’s investment portfolio should be handled. He had previously said it would fall to two investment managers who handle small chunks of the portfolio now. On Saturday, Buffett endorsed Abel for the gig, as well as overseeing the operating businesses and any acquisitions.

“He understands businesses extremely well. and if you understand businesses, you understand common stocks,” Buffett said. Ultimately, it will be up to the board to decide, but the billionaire said he might come back and haunt them if they try to do it differently.

Overall, Buffett said Berkshire’s system of having all the noninsurance companies report to Abel and the insurers report to Jain is working well. He himself hardly gets any calls from managers anymore because they get more guidance from Abel and Jain.

“This place would work extremely well the next day if something happened to me,” Buffett said.

Nevertheless, the best applause line of the day was Buffett’s closing remark: “I not only hope that you come next year but I hope that I come next year.”

A former beauty queen who was abandoned in an airport as a newborn in 1980 will finally meet her biological mother for the first time in two weeks.

Elizabeth Hunterton, who long before she was crowned Miss Nevada was known only as baby “Jane Doe,” has been documenting the tedious journey of tracking down her biological parents on social media to learn more about herself.

While her research led her to learn the heartbreaking news her biological father died 20 years ago, she’s reconnected with family and is anxiously anticipating meeting her biological mother in just a matter of days.

“I got a lot of feelings happening,” she said in one of her latest videos on TikTok, where she boasts more than 102,000 followers. “Probably the overarching one is fear.

“I’m freaking scared. Of what? Who knows,” she added.

Hunterton, 44, was discovered at the gate of a Nevada airport by two pilots in January, 1980, when she was just 10 days old, she told People Magazine in 2021.

She was first to find out what happened to her biological father after she was connected by his brother, her uncle, through the popular ancestry website.

She called him and said he told her “‘My dear niece, this is the kind of things you hear about in the movies but you never expect it to come to a theater near you.’” Hunterton agreed.

But one of her greatest fears came true when she realized her uncle had been speaking in the past tense about her father, whom he described as “an incredible man.” He died in 2004 never knowing that he had a child of his own — which he always had wished had.

“My birth mother never told my biological father about me,” Hunterdon said.

“When he passed, he became one of my guardian angels,” she said. “I’m very much my biological father’s daughter; we look alike, we talk alike, and the first time I met my biological uncle, he just kept staring at me.”

Finding out about her biological father only took a matter of days. Tracking down her biological mother was a more trying endeavor.

After nearly giving up and believing her mother to be dead, Hunterton heard from a cousin who provided her mother’s contact information. She decided to send her a two-and-a-half page handwritten note, hoping for the best.

Hunterdon’s mother responded, and her mysterious past was unveiled for the first time.

She was born to a black father and a Japanese mother who met at the Fort Ord military base and was born at a California hospital.

Her abandonment, she learned, was not her mother’s fault.

“When I received her email, she shared that she wasn’t able to take care of me as she believed I deserved,” Hunterton told People. “Therefore, she gave me to her roommate who was supposed to take me to an adoption agency. When my birth mother was told that I was actually left at the airport instead, it took quite a toll.”

She also was elated to find out that her mother had given her “Elizabeth” as her first name, which her adoptive parents chose over “Jane Doe.”

An aspiring medical student was left brain dead last month when his friends pushed him into a Louisiana lake knowing he couldn’t swim — and then looked on while doing nothing to save the drowning man, according to a report.

Shocking video shows the group casually peering into the water moments after they shoved Christopher Gilbert off the dock at Lake D’Arbonne in Farmerville on April 14.

At least one woman can be seen slowly entering the water before abandoning the rescue mission.

It was another 10 minutes before a patron at a nearby restaurant intervened and yanked Gilbert back to land — just in the nick of time.

The 26-year-old was brain dead and the rest of his organs were starting to fail by the time he arrived at a local hospital, his mother Yolanda George told KSLA.

He spent 72 hours on a ventilator and an ECMO machine, which George described as “dialysis for the lungs.”

“I was devastated. I felt like my life had ended in that moment. My son is aspiring to be a medical doctor, my son is going to be a medical doctor. He got his masters last year in biological science. He’s preparing for medical school so for this to have happened to him … I was just devastated,” George said.

According to police, his so-called friends initially tried to pass off the near-death as “horse-play.”

They even told the lie to George in the moments after he was rescued: “A friend of his called and she was hysterical crying. She told me that Chris has fell into the lake and he had been underwater for 10 minutes or so,” the mother said.

Eventually, a white female around the same age as Gilbert admitted to pushing him into the lake.

None of the friends, however, admitted to knowing he couldn’t swim — a claim Gilbert’s family finds hard to believe.

“To add insult to injury, after pushing him, no one from the ‘friend group’ attempted to go in after him. Instead, two brave bystanders, who have no relationship to Chris, heard commotion and retrieved his body from the lake,” personal injury attorney Claudia Payne, representing George, wrote in a report obtained by the Lincoln Parish Journal.

Fortunately, Gilbert has made strides since the ruthless attack.

The family is also demanding that an arrest be made in the tragic incident, with Payne saying the friends displayed criminal intent by pushing him into the lake.

“Why would you push my son in the lake knowing he couldn’t swim?” asked George.

Mystik Dan desperately fought to hang on with two challengers coming to him in the closing strides. He did, too, after a delay of several minutes while the closest three-horse photo finish since 1947 was sorted out.

Mystik Dan, an 18-1 shot, edged Sierra Leone by a nose, with Forever Young another nose back in third on Saturday. Sierra Leone was the most expensive horse in the race at $2.3 million.

At the top of the stretch, everything changed.

Track Phantom drifted off the rail, opening a hole that Hernandez squeezed Mystik Dan through, and the bay colt suddenly found another gear. He quickly opened up a daylight advantage on the field.

“When he shot through that spot, he was able to cut the corner and I asked him to go for it,” Hernandez said. “He shot off and I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ve got a big chance to win the Kentucky Derby.’”

To Mystik Dan’s outside, Sierra Leone and Forever Young took up the chase in the middle of the track.

As Mystik Dan sped along the rail, Sierra Leone lugged in and bumped Forever Young three times in the stretch, but jockey Ryusei Sakai didn’t claim foul.

Mystik Dan got so close to the rail that Hernandez’s boot struck it.

“But I think we can buy another pair of boots,” he said.

The winner’s share of the record $5 million purse was $3.1 million, with the jockey and trainer typically earning 10% each.

“Just a brilliant, brilliant, brilliant jockey and ride,” McPeek said. “Brian is one of the most underrated jockeys, but not anymore, right?”

Sierra Leone, the second choice at 9-2 odds, and Forever Young from Japan came up just short at the wire in front of 156,710 at Churchill Downs, the largest crowd since 2018.

“You get beat a nose in the Kentucky Derby, it’s a tough one,” said Chad Brown, trainer of Sierra Leone. “But I’m so proud of the horse.”

It was just the 10th Kentucky Derby decided by a nose — the closest margin in horse racing — and the first since Grindstone edged Cavonnier to wear the garland of red roses in 1996.

The crowd waited several minutes in the heat and humidity as the result was reviewed by the stewards and declared official.

“The longest few minutes of my life,” Hernandez said, after he and Mystik Dan walked in circles while the stunning result was settled. “To see your number flash up to win the Derby, I don’t think it will sink in for a while.”

Fierceness finished 15th in the field of 20 3-year-olds. Owner Mike Repole is 0 for 8 in the derby. He had the favorite in 2011 with Uncle Mo, who was scratched the day before the race with an illness. Last year, Forte was scratched the morning of the race as the favorite with a bruised foot.

Mystik Dan ran 1 1/4 miles over a fast track in 2:03.34 and paid $39.22, $16.32 and $10.

Hernandez and trainer Kenny McPeek had teamed for a wire-to-wire win in the Kentucky Oaks for fillies on Friday with Thorpedo Anna. McPeek is the first trainer to sweep both races since Ben Jones in 1952.

McPeek’s only other victory in a Triple Crown race was also a shocker: 70-1 Sarava won the 2002 Belmont Stakes — the biggest upset in that race’s history. The colt spoiled the Triple Crown bid of War Emblem.

The winning owners are cousins Lance and Brent Gasaway and Daniel Hamby III, all from Arkansas. They bred Mystik Dan.

“We’ve done it with what I call working-class horse,” McPeek said, explaining the colt’s sire and dam weren’t big names.

Sharilyn Gasaway, Brent’s wife, said, “It is surreal for sure. We feel like we’re just ordinary people and we’ve got an amazing horse.”

Sierra Leone returned $6.54 and $4.64. Forever Young was another nose back in third and paid $5.58 to show.

A California school district axed its superintendent this week – nearly a year after students claimed she threatened to ban them from graduation festivities for failing to clap loudly enough for her daughter at a sports banquet.

The board overseeing the 35,000-student Poway Unified School District in San Diego voted unanimously to dismiss Marian Kim Phelps on Tuesday during a closed-door meeting, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff, the board’s president, read a statement saying it “has lost all confidence and trust in Dr. Phelps’ ability to continue to serve as superintendent” following an investigation into Phelps’ actions, which began Nov. 15.

Phelps felt members of the softball team at Del Norte High School, a Poway Unified campus in San Diego, didn’t applaud loudly enough for her daughter after she was named MVP during a May 30 team banquet, according players, coaches and teachers.

The so-called slight, players alleged, prompted Phelps to launch an investigation — and threaten to bar seniors from participating in graduation ceremonies.

All 3,000 city Department of Correction body-worn cameras were yanked Saturday — a day after an officer at the Rikers Island correctional facility was injured when hers ignited, The Post has learned.

The captain’s body camera caught on fire Friday, prompting unions to ask for a full safety review, officials said.

“They’re going to pull them,” Patrick Ferraiuolo, president of the Correction Captains’ Association, said. “They’re not going to be returned to staff until we’re sure they’re OK.”

Earlier reports indicated the officer was burned by the camera fire but officials later said she suffered smoke inhalation, he said.

It’s not clear what caused the camera to ignite but some of them have lithium batteries, Ferraiuolo noted.

The DOC’s more than 3,000 body-worn cameras, which are assigned to all uniformed staff, are similar to those used by the NYPD but not the same make, officials said.

Corrections Officers’ Benevolent Association President Benny Boscio sent a statement to his members telling them the city and DOC commissioner agreed to pull the cameras at his request.

In 2018, The New York Police Department removed about 3,000 body cameras from its officers after one of the devices worn by a Staten Island cop exploded into flames.

The department was in the early stages of outfitting its 23,000 officers with the cameras. They now all have them.

The NYPD yanked another 2,000 police body cameras in 2021 after one of the devices exploded and caught fire in Manhattan.

The officers both suffered minor injuries.

Authorities recovered a bloody, medieval-style spear from the scene of what was believed to be a murder-suicide in Santa Ana, California.

Police are investigating the deaths of a young woman and an older man whose bodies were found Thursday afternoon at a storage facility in the city about 35 miles south of Los Angeles.

A third man, who was found alive at the scene, later died.

Santa Ana Police said the woman called them shortly before 4:30 p.m. to report “her boyfriend stabbed her and her uncle.”

A local funeral home chain has come under fire for what the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection says are egregious practices that are exploitative of grieving families. ABC7

A Bronx-based funeral home chain accused of preying on customers for years did such shoddy work, it once presented a dead man’s body “sitting inside a plastic bag” for a viewing, the city’s consumer watchdog said.

At least 48 customers have complained about RG Ortiz Funeral Home over the past five years, including one who said their loved one smelled of decomposition and another who said their grandson’s eye “”would not stay shut, constantly opening and moving throughout the viewing,” according to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

RG Ortiz has violated city codes and owes customers an unspecified amount of restitution, the DCWP contended in papers filed against the business with the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, or OATH.

The chain is also accused of refusing to tell families where the remains of their loved ones were; improperly handling bodies; misrepresenting or concealing prices and failing to provide paid-for materials and services,

The business has eight different funeral homes in the five boroughs and primarily serves Spanish-speaking communities.

It often took much longer than RG Ortiz said it would for remains to be returned to families, the city said.

One woman was told she would get her 5-month-old baby’s cremated remains within two to three weeks, but it ended up being two to three months, according to the OATH petition.

Another customer was told he’d get his dad’s ashes within three weeks, but allegedly had to wait nine months to receive them.

One grieving family claimed the Bronx funeral home lost their sister’s remains and sued the chain in 2018.

The Post previously reported the funeral home screwed up four memorial services in a few hours, even presenting a casket with the wrong person inside.

RG Ortiz has also presented remains in “unacceptable conditions,” the city’s suit claims. ABC7

The DCWP is also seeking various civil penalties against RG Ortiz for code violations.

“Grieving the passing of a loved one can be the most challenging moment in our lives and no one should be exploited by predatory business practices during such a vulnerable time,” said Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga.

The synth-laden earworm, titled “Friendly Father,” lavishes praise on the Hermit Kingdom’s dictator, with lyrics describing Kim as “warm-hearted like your mother” and “benevolent like your father.”

An accompanying music video for the two-minute hit released last month drives home the message conveying the power-hungry tyrant as a benevolent leader.

In one scene, Kim hugs a child before kissing her on the cheek, while in another, he is mobbed by a group of giddy women. Other moments in the video capture smiling military troops and bus riders of all ages singing along to the lyrics.

On the Chinese-owned app, the song has racked up millions of views, including from many Gen-Z users who are oblivious to the song’s lyrics that shower adoration on the same man who this earlier year promised to “thoroughly annihilate” the United States and rival South Korea if provoked, the BBC reported.

Some unexpected fans described the hit’s infectious melodies as “ABBA-coded,” according to the outlet, which has helped the track reach levels of virality typically expected from a hit by the current reigning pop queen — not a Communist state’s propaganda machine.

“Taylor Swift was not expecting to get blown out of the water right after dropping her new album,” one online user said, while another joked the song “needs a Grammy.”

Agitprop like “Friendly Father” — the latest in a 50 year tradition of North Korea propaganda pop songs — are intended to be catchy and accessible in order to burrow into the minds of listeners, experts said.

Alexandra Leonzini, a Cambridge University scholar focusing on North Korean music, explained to the BBC such tracks also rarely feature any actual emotions.

The terms previously had been used solely for North Korea’s first leader, his grandfather Kim Il Sung, and may be a sign that he is looking to bolster his position as his nation’s “Supreme Leader.”

“Songs are used to telegraph the direction the state is going in… to signpost important moments and important developments in politics,” Leonzini told the BBC.

“A song is almost like the newspaper in North Korea.”

“Not only did she cheat on him, but she cheated with a little kid.”

The 24-year-old teacher was busted after the victim’s parents found texts between the pair, according to charging documents.

The boy’s father then stormed into River Crest Elementary School with printouts of the conversations, prompting an investigation.

The texts revealed intimate messages from Bergmann detailing their encounters inside of the classroom during lunch or after school — including texts telling the boy how much she enjoyed him touching her and “making out,” the charging documents state.

Police additionally found a folder with the victim’s name on it in her bag that contained handwritten notes talking about how much they kissed, they said.

It’s unclear how long the abuse had been going on, but the accused pervert told investigators she was given the boy’s phone number by his mother in December when the family invited the teacher to the Afton Alps for winter break.

That was the same month Bergmann became engaged to Hickman, her social media shows.

The sick teacher has since been placed on administrative leave and barred from contacting any district students, parents or staff, the Hudson School District told parents the same day as her arrest.

Bergmann is charged with one count of first-degree child sexual assault.

She was released on a $25,000 signature bond.

Sandy Carazas-Pinez, 34, a former NYC public school teacher, is charged with engaging in multiple sexual acts in her car with a 16-year-old boy — one of her students at a city-funded Yonkers school for kids with special needs — and producing child porn.

It is one of the most horrific cases of sexual abuse by a New York educator in recent history.

Brooklyn federal judge John Cronan revoked Carazas-Pinez’ bail after finding she repeatedly breached conditions of her home confinement.

She was arrested in July and released on bail, but forbidden to have unsupervised contact with any child under the age of 18.

The married mother of three later emailed another former student a day after he turned 18 to wish him happy birthday.

While technically not a violation, “it seems to fly in the face of the spirit of the conditions,” Cronan said in a hearing, a transcript shows. Prosecutors said it fit the teacher’s “pattern of grooming” a student for sex. Her own lawyer called the behavior “troubling.”

Calling her “a real danger to the community,” the judge warned Carazas-Pinez to comply with the rules or he’d lock her up.

Last month, he learned of multiple violations cited by pre-trial supervisors, including stops at a mall and Applebee’s restaurant while on strictly limited outings.

She obtained permission to pick up a paycheck and cash it.

Instead, she went to a restaurant and bar on Staten Island, then to a wooded area, GPS tracking showed.

She admitted using the check-cashing request “as a pretense” after a dispute in her parents’ home, where she was staying after her husband kicked her out.

“In other words, she lied,” the judge concluded.

Carazas-Pinez was sent to the federal Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on April 15.

The victim’s mother, whose name is being withheld by The Post to protect his privacy, is relieved.

“She’s a very disturbed individual, and I’m glad she no longer has access to children — especially mine,” she said.

Carazas-Pinez taught at the Biondi School, which the mentally disabled 16-year-old attended at the city DOE’s expense.

It is run by the nonprofit Rising Ground, which fired her in March 2023 after seeing the teacher with the student in her car.

Previously, Carazas-Pinez taught at PS/MS 007 in Harlem, and PS/IS 218 in The Bronx.

Workers were back in Norwalk on Saturday to finish demolishing the Connecticut bridge severely damaged by fire after a gas-filled tanker truck crashed on Interstate 95, and burst into flames.

Both sides of the highway remain closed to traffic between Exits 14 and 16, as crews removed the Fairfield Avenue span, which melted under the intense heat of the gasoline-fed fire.

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont has said that stretch of highway would remain closed until at least Monday.

The I-95 closure caused a 13-mile backup on the southbound side of the dual-laned Merritt Parkway, as drivers sought an alternate route around the crash scene.

Serious delays were also reported northbound and on surrounding roads, and backups plagued local streets in Norwalk, Westport, Darien and Stamford.

The crash happened when the tanker collided with another commercial vehicle and then a passenger car, Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling said.

“We are very grateful that nobody was seriously injured,” said Rilling, who praised state and local workers for their swift efforts to quell the fire, the Hartford Courant reported.

NBC Connecticut, citing state police, reported a Chevrolet Camaro entering I-95 south from Route 7 collided with the front of the fuel truck, which was in the right lane.

The tanker truck then veered into the center lane, striking a tractor-trailer.

The fuel truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of gas at the time of the crash, resulting in a tremendous fireball.

School was closed in Norwalk on Friday, and Lamont urged drivers to stay away from the area through the weekend, to allow crews easy access.

California is taking of heat for celebrating the completion of an high-speed rail bridge that clearly goes nowhere — part of an $100 billion boondoggle project.

Critics — including Tesla founder Elon Musk and Dogecoin creator Billy Markus — are ripping the California High Speed Rail Authority after it boasted about the completion of a “Fresno River Viaduct,” a mere sliver of the state’s long-delayed, bullet-train project attempting to link San Francisco to Los Angeles

Musk also chimed in, posting a sad, crying emoji to express his sentiments about the project, which is reportedly in danger of being scrapped.

That’s despite $11 billion in taxpayer dollars that have already being sunk into the construction already.

That figure includes the Fresno Viaduct and numerous other bridge and overpasses that have already been built for the first phase of the project — which will run from Bakersfield north of Los Angeles to Merced, which is about 80 miles from the Bay Area.

Critics were responding to an earlier post by the rail authority, touting that the Fresno River Viaduct in Madera County is one of the “first completed high-speed rail structures.”

Venture Capitalist Patrick Blumenthal insinuated the authority should pump the brakes on praising itself, posting a breakdown of the lack of progress the rail-line project has made.

“0.3 miles completed. After 15 years. After $11.2 BILLION. $36.96 billion per mile,” he wrote on X.

Higher education’s descent into madness has led me to ask a simple but important question: Who exactly is financing college instruction in what is so obviously a mass indoctrination of so many of the nation’s (allegedly) best and brightest college-aged students at our top schools?

Sorry, pure ideology pushing left-wing academic bias of the core curriculum only gets you so far in explaining the gross spectacle now unfolding daily on the nation’s campuses, the rank antisemitism, Jewish students being harassed and the creepy justification of Hamas’ butchering innocents all coming out of the mouths of people who are supposed to be our future leaders.

There must be a money incentive that first rationalized anti-Americanism and anti-Israel racism in the college classroom and radicalized so many students into believing Israel is somehow at fault for defending itself against the barbarism of Oct. 7.

Word on the Street

And for that, I turned to many of my contacts on Wall Street, executives who both know about money and graduated from the same elite schools at the center of the tumult.

They offer an interesting roadmap to the brainwashing and various funding sources of the disgrace we’re witnessing.

Yes, there is big-money funding this type of instruction — one that de-emphasizes Western Civ and extols anti-American and Jew-hating instruction by leftist and even Marxist professors — and it isn’t just Soros-related, as The Post has documented.

It comes from some frightening and surprising places, both foreign and domestic.

Let’s start with the foreign.

Norbert Gottesman is a hedge-fund manager and a graduate of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service.

He recalls his experience with anti-American and anti-Israeli indoctrination at Georgetown University, an elite college started by Jesuit priests in our nation’s Capital, no less.

Gottesman is the son of Jewish immigrants who escaped the old Soviet Union.

They sought the American dream for their son and his pathway through an elite university.

Georgetown and its foreign services school is considered among the best in the business.

It trains diplomats and business types running major trading desks and multinational companies.

Bill Clinton is a graduate; Madeleine Albright taught there.

It also has been training students to hate Israel, Gottesman told me.

“They were teaching us so much nonsense, like American imperialism caused all the territorial conflicts in the Middle East,” Gottesman said.

“I was the only Jewish student in many of my classes and felt very uncomfortable because the message was simple: The US foreign policy needs to be more pro-Arab in order to force Israel to give land back.”

Gottesman graduated in 1998, which gives you some insight into how long our top universities like Georgetown have been inculcating students with a leftist interpretation of history putting Israel at the center of academia’s perverted axis of evil.

So that got him digging into the school’s source of funding.

Gottesman points out to me that Arab countries have been major contributors to the foreign service school.

In fact, the school has a campus in Qatar, the very country where the Hamas leadership resides and plotted the deadly and vicious Oct. 7 attack that all these students are celebrating.

In January, as the world was still grappling with the brutality of the massacre, Georgetown’s Qatar campus bizarrely featured a symposium titled “Israel’s War on Palestinians: Gaza as Epicenter.”

Or maybe not so bizarrely given that tens of millions of dollars from Qatar have flowed into Georgetown since 2015, according to the US Department of Education website.

A school flack said: “We strongly condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, and hatred of any kind in our community . . . Our campus in Qatar has helped educate more than 800 students from around the world in international affairs.”

while maintaining our . . . commitment to academic freedom, religious freedom, and inclusion and non-discrimination.”

Yet it’s not just foreign money but money from US sources that continues to pour into these schools, according to my sources.

Look at the make-up of the board of trustees of our top schools — the main conduit for college fundraising — and you see a preponderance of Wall Street types.

For years, they have looked away from the radicalization at our elite colleges while they financed through endowment contributions the instruction and expansion of courses that teach a false narrative about the evils of capitalism, and the systemic racism of America and Israel.

They still are despite the recent upheaval that seems to grow by the day.

For every Robert Kraft, Marc Rowan and Bill Ackman — billionaire Ivy League grads thoroughly disgusted with what their contributions to Columbia, Penn and Harvard have financed — too many others continue to throw their money at these schools.

Attorney Marc Kasowitz has been suing universities like Columbia, Harvard and Penn for violating the civil rights of Jewish students who are the daily targets of abuse and threats.

He has seen this cowardice firsthand as he seeks support for his litigation.

“These are people worth hundreds of millions, even billions of dollars, and some won’t step up. It’s unbelievable,” Kasowitz said.

Rescue workers and residents dealing with devastating flooding in East Texas are getting a badly needed break in the weather Saturday, but another round of heavy rain looms for Sunday, prompting extended flood alerts.

With the break in the weather comes the good news that river levels peaked Friday night along the East Fork of the San Jacinto River, which has seen the worst of the flooding, but is forecast to remain well above major flood stage through much of Saturday.

NOAA’s river gauge in New Covey says the river crested just under 78 feet — nearly 20 feet above flood level and only 3.4 feet shy of the record crest set during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

High waters that reached up to the rooftops of many homes led officials to issue mandatory evacuations along the east side of the river and urged residents not to ride out the storms in their homes.

“That means elevated structures will get water … it means the water will be hitting power lines, which puts our emergency evacuation vehicles at risk because they’re not going to be able to see those power lines,” Harris County Executive Judge Lina Hidalgo said Thursday.

“Please evacuate that area as soon as possible.”

Still, dozens of people and pets needed rescue as crews in boats fanned out across the flooded streets and homes looking for neighbors who needed help evacuating.

Hidalgo said around 700 homes were flooded upriver in Polk County as well, giving a warning of what was to come Friday as that water pushed downstream into northern Harris County.

FOX Weather

River flooding was also reported along the western fork of the San Jacinto River near Kirkwood, though not as severe as along the eastern fork.

In San Jacinto County, residents along the Trinity River downstream of the Lake Livingston dam were told to evacuate earlier in the week after the dam had to radically increase its outflow as the upstream watershed collected 17-20 inches of rain within a week.

Widespread storm rainfall totals of 6-12 inches were measured across the rest of the region.

Flood Watches remain posted as more rain eyes East Texas

While Saturday will give the region a chance to wring out and allow rivers a chance to recover, more rain is in the forecast for Sunday as a storm system spreading severe weather in the Plains on Saturday continues to push east.

Flood Watches remain in effect for Houston and the flooded areas of East Texas into Sunday afternoon.

Only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday, but more widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday night into Sunday.

Additional rainfall totals of 1-3 inches are likely with some spots receiving as much as 5 inches of rain.

As a result, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has kept the region at a Level 2 out of 4 risk for flash flooding into Sunday.

The current forecast for the eastern fork of the San Jacinto river shows a slight slowing of the water’s rate of recession later this weekend, but so far still keeps river levels dropping despite the potential for added rain.

The long range forecasts are trending much drier and warmer for the region beginning Monday with mostly sunny skies and highs near 90 for the workweek ahead.

A fourth body has been discovered in a 50-foot deep well in Baja California, Mexico where an American and two Australian surfers were found dead, authorities revealed.

Meanwhile, one of the three suspects taken into custody by Mexican authorities reportedly had one of the tourists’ phones on her when she was arrested — and all three allegedly had drugs on them.

Mexican officials have not officially confirmed that the three bodies found in a well hole last week are Georgia resident Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, and Australian brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30.

But two news outlets, Border Report and FOX 5 San Diego, citing a source in the Baja California Attorney General’s office, say the dead bodies are those of the three missing surfers.

The fourth body was identified as a ranch owner who was reported missing two weeks ago, officials said.

Tension flared on ABC’s “The View” on Friday as the co-hosts discussed the anti-Israel protests on college campuses nationwide.

The co-hosts clashed with each other on multiple points concerning the demonstrations, the first being that the imagery of the chaos on campus would help former President Trump’s re-election chances, and the second being who the victims are in these protests.

Co-host Sunny Hostin sparked the debate on both topics, showing visible anger at co-host Sarah Haines for bringing up the fact that people may be distracted from the January 6 Capitol riot because of these new chaotic images; and elsewhere causing a stir by saying the student protesters are being victimized by police.

The arguments over the protests began after a discussion of an upcoming Trump donor event where the former president was looking to vet his potential vice presidential nominee.

Despite most of the ladies on the panel mocking Trump’s legal woes and his potential running mate picks, Haines burst the bubble, noting that many are being driven to attend the fundraiser because of the chaos they’re seeing on the news stemming from the campus protests.

“One of the people with this event said donors are flocking to this event due to the horror of nightly images they see on TV,” Haines said, which appeared to frustrate Hostin.

The co-host interrupted Haines, asking, “Do they not remember the visuals on January 6th? Do they not remember those visuals of chaos?”

“I think – I think, in the human – literally, humans look at the recent visions. So, nightly image right now matters more to them than January 6th,” Haines argued.

Hostin forcefully shot back, “January 6th is ingrained in my memory and it should be ingrained in every single person’s memory in the United States of America.”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin acknowledged Hostin’s point, but bolstered Haines’ argument, adding, “It should be, but while there are completely different – a lot of the imagery looks similar and it was, you know, you’re going to see Republicans seeing windows being smashed, things being defaced on college campuses and it evokes that same sense of lawlessness.”

After discussing some of the violence and destruction that has gone on during the campus demonstrations, Hostin said the anti-Israel agitators have faced violence and fear.

“There are also anti-protesters that have come in and caused violence to these encampments. Let’s not forget that part of the story,” Hostin said.

Mark Black, 50, of Arlington, Virginia, pled guilty to one count each of conspiracy to produce child pornography and coercion and enticement.

Per the DOJ: Between 2018 and 2021, Black had been a member of 2 online groups dedicated to locating prepubescent girls online and convincing the girls to livestream themselves engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

When Black's electronic devices were seized, authorities located over 172,000 images of suspected child sexual abuse, more than 1,300 of which depicted the girls identified as his victims.
