Live Updates: Maui Fires Death Toll Rises To 55 In Lahaina

Maui Fires Still ‘Very, Very Hazardous’ As Toll Rises To 55(Weather.com)

Progress is being made on extinguishing the fire that devastated the Maui city of Lahaina with it now 80% contained. Officials say the number of people killed has risen to 55, and they expect that number will grow as many are still missing. One fire official called the situation in Lahaina “very, very hazardous” and residents who didn’t lose their homes are still not allowed to return.

T​he death toll from the horrific wildfire that swept through the West Maui town of Lahaina rose to 55 overnight, with officials stressing that they were nowhere near finishing the search for additional victims.

H​ere are some of the latest developments:

-S​earch efforts were ongoing, with cadaver dogs and other help en route from California.

-Hawaii G​ov. Josh Green said the fires are the largest natural disaster the state has ever seen, and at least 1,000 buildings were destroyed.

-S​eventeen additional deaths were confirmed before Thursday's news conference, bringing the total to 53. Later, Maui County said two more deaths had been confirmed.

(​12:55 p.m. ET) SOS Fosters Needed As Animal Shelters Fill Up

The Maui Humane Society is urgently asking community members to foster dogs to make room for injured or displaced animals.

“Many animals in the shelter start to show signs of mental decline,” the organization writes. “It means they need to be removed from the stressors of the shelter (at least for a temporary period).”

Maui Humane Society is looking for people to foster animals for ideally a week. No training or payment is required and necessities such as food, medication, collars and a leash will also be provided.

(​11:50 a.m. ET) 17 Lives Saved From The Water, Coast Guard Reports

Coast Guard Station Maui boat crews rescued 17 people from the water and located 40 survivors ashore, the agency said in an update.

There are currently no reports of missing persons in the water as search and rescue operations continue. Efforts so far have covered 689 square nautical miles.

“Today, our assets remain actively engaged in the search and rescue response and our responders are operating and searching as though there may still be survivors in need of assistance,” said Capt. Aja L. Kirksey, Sector Commander of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu.

(​11:15 a.m. ET) Teen Survives Hours In Ocean Evading Flames

The 15-year-old said he stayed chest deep in the water for six to seven hours to evade approaching flames from the Maui wildfire.

“It was either that or stay on the wall or swim,” he said. “But I don’t think any of us could swim that far because the currents were so strong.”

(10:10 a.m. ET) Lahaina's Banyan Tree Charred But Standing

Concerns over Lahaina’s landmark 150-year-old tree abound as its fate remains uncertain. The tree’s once lush canopies covered nearly 30,000 square feet and was a place where events were often held.

“It suffered terrible damage and we just pray that the deep roots will bring water back into this tree,” said Hawaii Gov. Josh Green.

Trees of any species are likely to die if more than 50 percent of its bark circumference is damaged.

(​9:40 a.m. ET) Oprah Winfrey Visits Maui Evacuees

Winfrey, a part-time Maui resident, visited evacuees on Thursday at the War Memorial Gymnasium. She offered to buy the shelter supplies including cots, blankets and toiletries, Hawaii News Now reported.

According to Architectural Digest, the former talk show host owns roughly 1,000 acres of land in Maui after most recently purchasing 870 acres in early March for $6.6 million.

(​8:20 a.m. ET) 'Everybody Lost Everything'

T​here are still an unknown number of people in West Maui waiting for supplies from convoys that are having difficulty reaching some areas of the island, Hawaii News Now reported. And that's taking a toll, even in areas where homes weren't destroyed.

"​Everybody stay fighting for everything right now," said Julia Aki, who escorted a Hawaii News Now crew as part of a convoy to deliver supplies. My other half’s family lost everything. Everybody lost everything. We don’t know how for feel. How are you supposed to feel?"

B​asic necessities – food, water and gas – were desperately needed, not just in Lahaina but for thousands still in areas like Kaanapali, Kahana, Napili and Honokowai.

"People out here no more nothing," Aki said. "They no more clothes. They no more nothing. They need stuff out here — supplies, hygiene, anything. Anything can help."

T​errifying new footage showed just how fast wind spread the flames as the wildfire swept through Lahaina. In the video, which you can see here, fierce winds can be heard whipping on camera as people watched in horror.

(​6:30 a.m. ET) Residents Said They Received No Warning

H​awaii is well-known for its emergency alert system, which can warn residents of impending threats such as tsunamis, flooding and hurricanes. But Lahaina residents told the Associated Press that they received no alert to warn them that a wildfire was sweeping through their town, catching thousands off-guard by how quickly it overwhelmed homes and businesses.

O​fficials told reporters that they don't believe any alerts were triggered as the fire tore through Lahaina.

M​aui mayor Richard T. Bissen Jr. said there were evacuation orders in place for "affected areas," according to the New York Times, but it wasn't clear exactly who received that alert. He added that some people were told to shelter in place rather than evacuate in an effort to prevent from everyone getting on the city's few roads out at the same time.

D​rinking water could be impacted since fires can contaminate private wells and water systems as well as municipal water systems, according to the Associated Press. The fires might also impact corals in nearby ocean waters and contribute to landscape and soil changes.

(5​:10 a.m. ET) Deadliest Hawaiian Natural Disaster Since 1960

A​ tsunami that struck the Big Island in 1960 killed 61 people. Since the death toll in Maui is expected to rise, it's increasingly likely Tuesday's fires will become the state's deadliest natural disaster.

About as many people would die in agony later from radiation poisoning. This was the first time in human history that a nuclear device was used in warfare. In fact, it was a merciless test on the civilian population.

The United States has been carrying out research on military applications for nuclear weapons since 1939, seeking to create a formidable weapon that would enable Washington to impose its will on the entire world. Codenamed Manhattan, the project received almost $2 billion in funding.

Three nuclear bombs were developed by mid-summer 1945, cynically codenamed the Gadget, Little Boy and Fat Man. The Gadget was to be used in a test explosion, while the other two were intended to intimidate Japan and also impress the USSR as it reinforced its positions.

Almost all clocks in Hiroshima stopped ticking at 8:15 am. The city was completely wiped from the surface of the Earth with the blast from the explosion turning people into ashes.

Attempts by Western historians to justify this monstrous crime by saying that the United States wanted to force Japan to withdraw from World War II do not hold water. Japan’s military resources were largely depleted by early August 1945, and it was the USSR’s entry into war in the Far East that played a decisive role here.

Therefore, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima was nothing other than a barbarous display of force and an attempt to justify all the money that had been invested in the Manhattan Project. It never occurred to President Harry Truman or any of his successors in this office to apologise for the suffering the people of Hiroshima had to endure.

In the United States today, a growing body of evidence suggests that the federal government is deliberately concealing methods used by intelligence or law enforcement agencies to identify or investigate suspects—including methods that may be illegal. It does so by creating a different story about how agents discovered the information, and as a result, people may be imprisoned without ever knowing enough to challenge the potentially rights-violating origins of the cases against them.

Through a practice known as “parallel construction,” an official who wishes to keep an investigative activity hidden from courts and defendants—and ultimately from the public—can simply go through the motions of re-discovering evidence in some other way. For example, if the government learned of a suspected immigration-related offense by a person in Dallas, Texas, through a surveillance program it wished to keep secret, it could ask a Dallas police officer to follow the person’s car until she committed a traffic violation, then pull her over and start questioning her—and later pretend this traffic stop was how the investigation in her case started.

Due to parallel construction, defendants in criminal cases across the country may be experiencing serious infringements of their rights without their knowledge. The United States Constitution draws on lessons learned from the abuses of the British colonial era in placing firm restrictions on how the government can behave when it wants to prove someone has done something wrong. It establishes criteria for rights-respecting searches and seizures, requires the prosecution to turn over to the defense any evidence favorable to the accused, and demands that all trials and proceedings take place in accordance with “due process”—that is, fundamental fairness. However, parallel construction—when sustained through the end of proceedings—means defendants cannot learn about, and therefore cannot challenge, government actions that violate these or other rights.

In creating fictions to keep potentially questionable investigative activities out of sight, the government also avoids an important deterrent to official misconduct. When law enforcement or intelligence agencies break the law, judges typically prohibit prosecutors from introducing evidence that was obtained as a result of those illegal operations. This is one of the main incentives agents have to respect rights. Parallel construction removes this incentive by deliberately rendering those agents’ actions invisible to courts and defendants, and the resulting lack of accountability risks turning constitutional rights into little more than words on paper.

This impact is not limited to criminal defendants. If government agents can potentially create privacy-violating, discriminatory, or otherwise unlawful programs or patterns of behavior in secret and without facing any negative consequences, the rights of every member of the public are in jeopardy. Taken to its worst logical conclusion, parallel construction risks creating a country in which people and communities are perpetually vulnerable to investigations based on prejudice, vast illegal operations, or official misconduct, but have no means of learning about these problems and holding agents to account.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Thursday CONFIRMED that 8,000 to 10,000 suspected fraudulent registrations were delivered to Muskegon City Clerk prior to the 2020 election.

The far-left Detroit News reported on this latest development on Thursday after reporting by The Gateway Pundit earlier this week.

A redacted police report describes how Muskegon City Clerk Meisch encountered a woman dropping off 8,000 – 10,000 completed voter registration applications. The Gateway Pundit reported that the “registrations included the same handwriting, non-existent addresses, and incorrect phone numbers.”

An investigation found that the woman worked for GBI Strategies.

GBI Strategies was funded by dark money super PAC ‘BlackPAC,’ which paid them $11,254,919 to register voters for Joe Biden.

The Gateway Pundit reported earlier that during the investigation, the police found guns, burner phones, pre-paid cash cards and incomplete registrations at a defunct eyeglass store where GBI Strategies had set up operation.

Lansing — Authorities in Michigan referred a 2020 investigation into thousands of voter registrations submitted by a person in Muskegon to the FBI, Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office confirmed this week.

Nessel’s press secretary, Danny Wimmer, said the total number of suspected fraudulent forms delivered to the Muskegon clerk by the individual was 8,000 to 10,000 ahead of the Nov. 3, 2020, presidential election.

However, Wimmer said, the “attempted fraud” was caught before Election Day because Michigan’s election system worked and the applicants were not added to the state’s voter rolls.

“The city clerk in Muskegon detected the fraudulent material provided and alerted the proper authorities,” Wimmer said in a statement. “A thorough investigation was conducted by multiple agencies within the state and no successful fraud was perpetrated upon the state’s election process or qualified voter file.”

The unresolved probe, which first became public in October 2020, has garnered new attention among conservative-leaning websites in recent days after the Gateway Pundit highlighted police reports about investigators’ efforts. The conservative website, which has advanced false and unproven theories in the past about voter fraud influencing Democrat Joe Biden’s victory, wrote in its headline for the story, “Now we have proof.”

However, officials in Michigan contented in recent days, the incident was proof that election administrators are capable of catching and preventing wrongdoing when it is attempted.

The person who submitted the registrations to Muskegon Clerk Ann Meisch’s office was a representative of GBI Strategies, which conducts voter registration drives and is headquartered in the state of Tennessee, Wimmer said.

“Fraud was determined to have occurred at the lowest levels of the company,” Wimmer said in a statement. “The leading internal indication was that fraud was being perpetrated against GBI Strategies by its employees to fabricate work product without conducting the work expected of them and not in explicit pursuit of defrauding the election infrastructure of the state.”

GBI Strategies received about $5 million from Democratic groups and campaigns for canvassing, voter outreach and other activities during the 2019-2020 election cycle, according to federal disclosures. Biden’s presidential campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee were among those that reported expenditures to GBI Strategies over the two-year period.

Attempts by The Detroit News to reach the company were unsuccessful in recent days.

Gateway Pundit and other conservative websites have highlighted that “bags of pre-paid gift cards, guns with silencers (and) burner phones” were found during the search.

But substantiating evidence of a crime wasn’t found during the search, Wimmer said.

“Detected in this search were pay cards, pre-pay style cell phones and voter registration forms, all determined to be normal operational devices in GBI Strategies’ line of work,” Wimmer said. “Also found during the search were several firearms, which prompted a response from federal agents of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

“All detected firearms were determined by federal authorities to be legally owned and incidentally stored in the location by an employee irrelevant to the business purposes of GBI Strategies. None of the materials seized resulted in furthering evidence of voter fraud.”

Meisch didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

The City of Muskegon has about 38,000 residents, so 8,000 new voter registrations would equal about 21% of the population.

The president of Stanford, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, resigned last month after a series of investigations exposed serious problems in his research; an independent review of Tessier-Lavigne’s work found no evidence that he falsified data himself but concluded that his research failed standards “of scientific rigor and process” and that he failed to correct the record on multiple occasions.

And in June it was revealed that a scholar at Harvard Business School, Francesca Gino, was accused of having falsified research about – wait for it – honesty.

Of course, scientific misconduct does not happen only at Stanford and Harvard. Of the nearly 5,500 retractions we catalogued in 2022, and the thousands of cases we have reported on since launching our watchdog website Retraction Watch in 2010, the vast majority involve researchers at institutions without anywhere near Stanford and Harvard’s pedigrees.

The number of retractions each year reflects about a tenth of a percent of the papers published in a given year – in other words, one in 1,000. Yet the figure has grown significantly from about 40 retractions in 2000, far outpacing growth in the annual volume of papers published.

Retractions have risen sharply in recent years for two main reasons: first, sleuthing, largely by volunteers who comb academic literature for anomalies, and, second, major publishers’ (belated) recognition that their business models have made them susceptible to paper mills – scientific chop shops that sell everything from authorships to entire manuscripts to researchers who need to publish lest they perish.

These researchers are required – sometimes in stark terms – to publish papers in order to earn and keep jobs or to be promoted. The governments of some countries have even offered cash bonuses for publishing in certain journals. Any surprise, then, that some scientists cheat?

And these are not merely academic matters. Particularly when it comes to medical research, fakery hurts real people. Take the example of Joachim Boldt – the German anesthesiologist who, with 186 retractions, now sits atop the Retraction Watch leader board of scientists with the most pulled papers.

A specialist in critical care medicine, Boldt studied a blood substitute that was used in hospitals across Europe. His results, which were published between around 1990 and 2009 and widely cited, suggested that the product – used to help keep blood pressure and the delivery of oxygen to cells adequate – was saving lives. After his fraud came to light and researchers reanalyzed all of the available data while leaving Boldt’s results out, it turned out the opposite was true: the substitute was “associated with a significant increased risk of mortality and acute kidney injury”.

The truth, however, is that the number of retractions in 2022 – 5,500 – is almost definitely a vast undercount of how much misconduct and fraud exists. We estimate that at least 100,000 retractions should occur every year; some scientists and science journalists think the number should be even higher. (To be sure, not every retraction is the result of misconduct; about one in five involve cases of honest error.)

The lengths to which scientists go to fight allegations of fraud is part of the reason the rate of retraction is lower than it should be. They punish whistleblowing underlings, sometimes by blaming them for their misdeeds. They sue critics. Although they rarely prevail in court, the threat of such suits, and the cost of defending against them, exerts a chilling effect on those who would come forward. In one particularly grisly and tragic case in 2006, a Bangladeshi academic had a whistleblower murdered. The academic was hanged 17 years later.

They let foxes guard the henhouse, by limiting critics to brief letters to the editor that must be approved by the authors of the work being criticized. Other times, they delay corrections and retractions for years, or never get to them at all.

Some of Boldt’s papers were only retracted this year – more than a decade after his fraud was incontrovertible. Journals are invariably more interested in protecting their reputations and the reputations of their authors than in correcting the record. Following evidence and testimony by Retraction Watch, the British House of Commons’s science, innovation and technology select committee was concerned enough that it said in a report earlier this year that corrections and retractions should take no longer than two months.

Universities hardly have an incentive to air their dirty laundry, but in the vast majority of cases they are left to investigate their own. Indeed, that is the law of the land in the United States, where scientists and universities have done their best to steadily erode the power of the US government’s Office of Research Integrity, which oversees – but does not perform – investigations into allegations of misconduct in federally funded research. University lawyers tell those in the know to say nothing, a form of academic omertà that lets fraudsters slip through many cracks.

The Stanford case – as Theo Baker, the student journalist who broke it open, has described – epitomizes all of these factors. Despite having been flagged on a site called PubPeer starting in 2014, the problems in Tessier-Lavigne’s papers would have remained virtually unknown, and might have never been corrected at all, were it not for Baker’s investigation. One of the main reasons scientists feel pressure to cut corners or fudge data is because funding rates are so low. The US National Institutes of Health last year approved about 20% of applications for new grants. And that’s a marked increase from recent years.

Funding to detect and sanction fraud should be a reasonable fraction of the dollars being spent – instead of mere millions in a sea of tens of billions. Until publishing papers is decoupled from earning funding and employment, however, it’s difficult to imagine how much will change.
