But I think that the mechanism described in that post only works for very specific chemicals, as (as I understand it) the gas is generated by mixing the two chemicals. I do not see how this would transfer to generic poisons.
Also, does anyone know how to bring it to gas form? The bacteria themselves are anaerobe, meaning that they die when in contact with air. The poison created by the bacteria is a protein, and is not very tolerant to heat, but survives exposure to air (afaik). You need some kind of medium to carry the proteins, but I do not know how you could get them to cling on to air or something.
In the book, it is suggested to either spray it with water as fog, or as powder. I assume that the protein is relatively heavy when compared with air, so it should not fly well, and sink to the ground.

If you're going with the former, I recommend simple things. Carry rolls of quarters (something I did in high school) they make your fist heavier. Carry spare latex gloves and a knive. Carry a slingshot.

I would use the extract of several different plants for different purposes.
One thing I have done some experimental work on, but would not recommend for legal reasons is a combination of water-based saltpeter, chicken feathers, and possibly a combination of giant hogweed extract with the bark of the toothache tree.
Doing this will create a noxious gas which evidently will be capable of incapacitating people by suffocation, but anyone who is unlucky enough to get away from it will be coated with a grease/oil that'll cause chemical burns once exposed to any form of UV radiation. The toothache tree bark is in there because it has the benefit of numbing pain receptors and making the target unaware of their predicament until long after their ordeal has started.
All though I have yet to personally test what I'm about to write down, I would have to imagine that you could catch some Colorado River Toads, and use their secretions, which contain 5-Meo-DMT, and are usually at their most active when rendered in flame and turned to smoke.
If you are not getting what I'm saying: You have a recipe to not only incapacitate a large group of targets in an enclosed space, but you also have the ability to put them through a hellish DMT induced trip which will likely cause them to vomit, audio/visual hallucinate, and this is on top of burns they would receive from the hogweed extract.
Another possibility is using fugu[pufferfish] poisons, which are currently already used by intelligence agencies around the world, as it tends too induce heart attacks within roughly five minutes of digestion. As far as my memory goes, their is no antivenom for pufferfish poison.

You know knives are no joke right? The reason britain's knife crime is so high is probably because they don't take it as seriously. You could use a hammer, a knife, even a heavy rock if someone didn't see you coming and easily kill someone with minimum effort, though you're likely to leave some form of evidence behind. Walking up to someone and just stabbing them 3 times rapidly in the intestines isn't easy to counter.
IMO explosives though, for the style points and the fact they've already been banned for being effective at crime. Bit hard to get into but if you can manage remote detonations and high enough power to destroy its own evidence, there's nothing they can do to protect themselves.

Nobody gets out of that, it's a guaranteed victory against every NPC enemy.
3. Molotov/Grenade + Vehicle
You drive by, throw away and drive away.
It's easy, the action is over quickly, close to no risk attached since you'll be over the mountains until someone reacts and it's guaranteed you'll inflict a lot of harm even if the monsters or NPCs survive.
If you pick as vehicle something like a bike or rollerskates, then even if paladins arrive you can easily lose anyone in alleyways where they can't reach.
4. Crossbow with a range of 100 meters or more + poison + a high location for further range increase.
You cover the tips or the entire arrow in the poison, then shoot away from places where after the shot, nobody will even know where it came from. And at the unlikely scenario that a paladin still noticed, you have ample time to get away from far more than 100 meters distance.
5. Hammer or Pickaxe.
The infamous minecraft weapon is true to its reputation. Nothing cracks open a skull as well as a pickaxe does. A hammer can be used in a similar fashion.
The hammer has the advantage that you can conceal and carry easily anywhere. The pickaxe that it's a silent, surefire, quick and moderately clean victory.
Pickaxe requires target to be lured to you, while hammer is suited to be brought to them.
Asphyxiation through smoke or gas could be potentially lethal but just as likely be ruined, cause commotion and alarm the NPCs.
Once NPCs are alarmed, it's far more difficult to get at them.
